Story by Grathra Nosra on SoFurry

Part of the first chapter of a story I started a long time ago but never got around to finishing. I would love to start working on it again as it still runs through my mind. Just haven't had the time to work on it.

This is unfinished work. This chapter is only half finished.

This is the story of Grathra's past. This story takes place one year before the main storyline. Grathra is currently 22, Drake is 24 and Ryan is 21. This story takes place on Mount Siberra, home of the Nosran.

Within the Nosran Palace Lord Lycan and Elder Rona prepare for a visit from the Elvin emissary from the Elbon Forest that resides within the land of Cornith.

"How are the preparations for the Elvin emissary coming along?" asked Lord Lycan.

"They are nearly complete my lord," replied Rona.

"That is good to hear. I want everything ready for the emissary's arrival. By the way where are Drake and Grathra?" he asked the elder.

"I believe they are at the royal training grounds sparring again, my lord." she replied.

Lord Lycan let out a brief sigh while slumping down in his throne.

"Sparring again, they should be here helping with the preparations." said Lord Lycan.

Rona laughed, "Now I remember a certain king that did the same way back when he was their age, sparring all day with the soldiers to better his fighting skills."

Lord Lycan's faced turned red as he blushed from the truth that Rona stated. He got up from his throne and headed for the training grounds.

Meanwhile at the royal training grounds we find Grathra and Drake preparing to begin their daily sparring practice. Meanwhile Ryan watches the match from the side of the sparring ring.

"Grath, give it your all!" shouted Ryan

Grathra turned toward his friend and smiled at Ryan as a gesture of thanks.

"You ready bro? I'm going all out this time. I won't let you beat me so easily this time." Grathra said to his older brother.

"Hump, you won't even scratch me." Drake replied, "Now let's get this match started."

"Let's do this then." replied Grathra.

"You bettered be ready, because here I come." Drake said as he charged toward his brother and throws the first punch.

Grathra easily dodges then counters with his own move and goes for a kick. Quickly recovering Drake manages to block the kick.

"Ha! Not bad baby brother, but you left yourself open." Drake pointed out as he grabbed Grathra's leg and swung him around and threw him across to the opposite side of the ring. Grathra quick recovers seconds before hitting the ground, landing on his feet as the force of the throw still sent him sliding backwards.

"That's the way Grath!" cried out Ryan.

"Ha, nice throw, but you'll have to do better than that." Grathra snickered.

Grathra charges back toward his brother preparing to strike his brother when...

"Sorry brother, but I'm ending our little match right now." Drake muttered to himself.

Almost upon his brother Grathra prepares to attack. Suddenly their father drops into the ring between the two and stops the match.

"Father!" gasped Grathra and Drake.

"Lord Lycan!" gasped Ryan has he kneeled down on one knee.

Lord Lycan stared angrily at his oldest son.

"Drake! I have told you not to use that technique against your brother. Besides it is too dangerous to be using such a move in a confined place such as this. I'm glad I got here when I did, otherwise you could have seriously hurt or even killed your own brother with that technique." he said angrily.

He then turned his attention to his youngest son and smiled.

"Grathra, you have really improved. Your training seems to be paying of quite well." Lord Lycan said.

"Ha-ha" laughed Grathra "You noticed. I've been doing a lot of training with Ryan for the past few weeks and I thought those sessions were starting to pay off."

"Well, I can tell that they have. You keep it up and you may one day be captain of the royal guard or possible the one I choose to be my successor." Lord Lycan said to his youngest son. "Anyways, Drake I need to speak with you in private. Grathra, why don't you run along and take a break."

"Yes father." Drake replied

"Ah...okay, sure." Grathra replied to his father. "Come on Ryan, let's get out of here!"

"Yeah, let's go." Ryan replied energetically.

After Grathra and Ryanleave the training arena Lord Lycan begins to discuss things with his eldest son.

"The Elders came to a decision a few days ago. They have chosen you to become the new Captain of the royal guard." He said to his son.

"Why did it take them so long to come to a decision?" he asked his father. "We have been with on for twelve years."

"They were waiting for you to come of age. Besides it was your mother's wish that you would one day take her place as Captain. Also seeing as how your brother will be my successor..."

"WHAT!?" Drake responded in frustration. "Why does he get to be the Lord of the Lycan Clan?"

"That is how the Elders see it. The strongest child of noble birth is named the successor and will become Head of the Lycan Clan."

"Then that rightfully makes me next in line to the throne." Drake retorted.

"True my son, but..."

"But nothing! If they are considering the power you and they sealed away, then yeah, he is stronger. Also he doesn't even know he has that power sealed within him. Besides do you really think that he would be able to control it if the seal was released or broken? Until that time comes, I am the stronger of the two of us." Drake said angrily toward his father.

"I am sorry Drake, but the seal breaking will never happen and he will learn about his power and will eventually learn to control it. So starting tomorrow you will be Captain of the royal guard. That's final. Now come on. The Harvest Festival is in two days and we need to prepare for it and finish preparing for the Elvin emissary's arrival."

Lord Lycan turns and walks toward the exit of the ring with Drake snarling angrily behind him.

By this time Grathra and Ryan are out walking through where the villagers are continuing to prepare for the Harvest Festival.

"It's hard to believe that it is already time for the Harvest Festival already. Oh I can't wait for all the fun things to do." said Ryan

"Yeah..." Grathra replied.

Ryan stops walking and Grathra stops with Ryan just behind him.

"Alright, what's wrong?" asked Ryan. "I can tell when something is bothering you. Come on, out with it."

"Huh, oh well it was that technique that Drake was going to use. I wonder what it was. Although father seemed pretty upset that he was going to use it against me."

Reaching around from behind, Ryan gentle grabs and hugs Grathra tight and gives him a kiss on the cheek.

"Look let's just forget all about that for now. I doubt your brother would really use any kind of ability on you that could seriously hurt or even kill you. I bet he was trying to use it as a scare tactic." Ryan said comfortingly.

Breaking out of Ryan's hug and grabbing Ryan's hand Grathra says "Yeah, you're right. I should just forget about it. Let's go and see if anyone needs help preparing for the festival."

(From this point on all encounters with Grathra and Ryan, Grathra will be shortened to Grath.)

Later that night after helping the villagers prepare for the festival Grath and Ryan return to the palace courtyard and lie cuddled together staring at the stars in the clear night sky.

"Sigh, the night sky is so lovely here in the mountains." said Ryan "I wonder if the night sky looks this lovely in other parts of the world."

"I bet it does." Grath replied cuddling Ryan some more.

"Hey, what does your father and Drake think of this whole thing? You know our relationship." asked Ryan

"Well, I did tell him, it was not something he was expecting, but he said he had his suspicions and Drake; well he said that he already knew." Grath replied.

"So does he have anything against it though? Seeing that you are of noble birth and I'm not a Nosran." Ryan asked.

"Well I think the only problem he has with it is that it means there won't be any heir to the throne from me." Besides the whole you are not a Nosran thing, who cares what they think of it. Love knows no boundaries" Grath replied.

"Hehe, well there is still Drake for an heir." laughed Ryan.

"Yeah, though I doubt he will find a mate anytime soon. He is so picky when it comes to the ladies from what father says." laughed Grath.

"Well it's getting late Grath. I guess I should head home." Ryan said while getting up.

"Not before my goodnight kiss, you don't" Grath said as he grabbed and kissed Ryan goodnight.

"Alright." Ryan replied kissing him back.

Grath stood and watched enamored as he watch Ryan walk off and exit the palace courtyard. Once Ryan was gone he took one deeper look into the night sky and then turned to make his way to his chambers. Unbeknownst to Grathra, Drake had been watching from a palace window snarling and seething with hatred for his brother.

The next morning inside the throne room, Lord Lycan and Drake stood before some of the royal guards.

"Soldiers of the royal guard, I would like to present to you your new captain my son, Drake Lycan."

The soldiers with the throne room cheer in admiration.

"Thank you father, I gladly accept this position. I will do my best as Captain just as my mother did before me"

During the excitement and commotion Lord Lycan sees out the corner of his eye, Grathra walking out of the throne room. "He's alright" he thought. "He's probably just upset that he wasn't the one chosen to be captain." But later during the ceremony Grathra had not returned. Now worried about his son, Lord Lycan excused himself from the celebration to find his son. After some searching throughout the palace he finally found Grathra. Though it was the last place he would have ever thought of. He found Grathra standing at his mother's grave. Quietly he approached his son.

"Hey father" Grathra said softly.

Taken back that his son had realized he was already there he quickly put thoughts together.

"So this is where you went to." he said

Oh way to go he thought, that was a smart way to start a conversation.

"Yeah" Grathra replied "Today marks twelve years to the day mom died."

"Yeah, it does, doesn't it? Are you still feeling that it is your fault that she is gone. I have told you before that it is not..." Lord Lycan said trying to comfort his son.

Bursting into tears Grathra interrupts his father's sentence.

"Yes it is my fault!" Grathra interrupted. "She died protecting me and I couldn't do anything to help her. I just sat there frozen in fear. She knew there were too many, even after receiving a mortal wound, she continued to fight.

Even more tears began rolling down Grathra's cheeks. Holding back his own tears Lord Lycan tried to comfort his son.

"Yes she continued to fight. That is our way. We continue to protect those we care about, right down to our last breath. Her love for you, as her child, is what allowed her to fight beyond even her physical limits. She fought with everything she had; I just wish I could have just gotten to you two sooner."

Grathra still crying and sniffling looks up from his mother's gravestone.

"Come" gestured his father, "Let's head back"

"Alright" agreed Grathra.

"One more question though. What was the last thing you remember of that event?" Lord Lycan asked his son.

"Well I remember watching those beasts run off and mom collapsing to the ground. I also remember stumbling over to her and trying to make sure she was okay, but I knew without even having to check, that she was no longer with me. After that everything's a blank. The next memory I have is waking up inside the temple in your arms." Grathra replied.

"I see." his father said. "Well, I've filled you in about the blank parts. That is when I found you and your mother."

"Yeah, but I just can't help think that there is something more." Grath replied.

"Oh well, I'm sure those memories are there. They are just locked away somewhere. Now let's go, today is a joyous occasion. Also I think you have a visitor upstairs waiting for you in the throne room." Lord Lycan said to his son.

Shocked at his father words...

"Wait, you mean you are okay with it and you..." Grath stuttered

"Yes, I sent for him. He should be waiting for you in the throne room about now." Replied Lord Lycan

A big grin came across Grathra's face.

"Oh, thank you father!" Grathra said excitedly giving his father a big hug.

"Ha-ha, okay you bettered run along now. It would be rude to keep him waiting." Lord Lycan gestured.

Quickly running off, Grathra left his father in the burial chamber.

"That was quite the loving gesture, my lord." Rona said.

"And how long have you been there Rona?" Lord Lycan questioned the elder.

Elder Rona walks out from around the corner.

"Well I originally came to pay my respects to my daughter, but I didn't want to disturb you two." the elder replied.

Elder Rona walks over to her daughter's headstone and kneels down saying a small prayer.

"So do you think he is ready to begin the training?" she asked.

"Yes I do believe he is ready, although it is not going to be easy on either one of them." He replied.

"Then I shall make preparations for the first stage of his training." Rona said.

Taking his leave, Lord Lycan makes his way back to the throne room. Grathra already reaching the throne room discovers that his father was right and Ryan is waiting for him. A even bigger grin comes across Grathra's face as he hurries to meet his boyfriend.

"Grath, I was sitting at home then I am summoned to the palace. What's going on?" Ryan asked.

"Oh this is just the celebration of Drake becoming Captain of the Royal Guard. Besides, my father summoned you here for me." Grath replied. "Anyways let's get out of here."

"Sure" Ryan answered smiling.

Grabbing Ryan's hand Grathra and Ryan head out to throne room toward the courtyard. The two continue through the courtyard and out of the palace gates.

"So where are we going today?" Ryan asked.

"Well this was so sudden I put no thought into what to do. Oh I know, there is somewhere I have wanted to show you." Grath replied.

"Alright, let's go then. " Ryan said

Grathra leads Ryan out to a waterfall that overlooks the valley below.

"Oh wow" gasped Ryan looking down into the valley. "You can see everything and it's such a lovely view."

"Yeah it's great. I use to come here a lot and just think and stare off into the distance." Grath said.
