Spartan Remus Part One
#1 of Spartan Remus
A story that I was inspired to write after playing Halo Reach and thought I might try uploading it here
Part One
In the year 2543 in the midst of the Humanity-Covenant war, there were planets still yet to be found within the universe. Whole galaxy's that was untouched nor discovered by neither the humans or the covenant. A planet known in the years after the war in which the humans named after an ancient god called Remus. This planet had not been found or even been heard of in the earlier years of the world. But in the year 2543 a helsion class cruiser. Beaten and battered from a previous battle with the covenant had just managed to escape the fight with enough power to jump a few galaxies away. Leaving light speed and entering an unknown area of space. The ship had a large name on the side of it "Courage and Honor." With the radio and slip drive now broken the remaining crew had no other choice but to land and hope for a passing UNSC vessel. The planet was dense with many forests, a vast water supply and many edible animals and plants. What the crew wasn't expecting to find was a large population of various creatures that looked like animals on earth but stood on two legs like a human. The beasts were wielding odd weapons that were the style of the covenants but only as advanced as a human weapon. They would speak back and forth among each other in their own tongue. The soldiers also talked among themselves wondering if they should treat the creatures as hostiles. But finding a species that wasn't on the covenants side was a very rare thing to come by. A Large wolf would step up from the creatures, wearing symbols on his chest that seemed to signify that he was their leader. He would walk to one of the Marines and place a paw on his gun curious about what it was. A female wearing an officer's uniform and multiple ribbons on her uniform spoke up. "I would have never thought that we could stumble upon such a thing like this." She made her way to the leader of the creatures. Putting her hands to her sides as if to show no harm, "We...are ...friends...we come in peace." The leader would twitch his ear and curve an eyebrow at the officer. Letting out a low grumble laughing at the female, "You must not understand that we are not such a primal species." The officer was in awe as the creature would talk in English, "You can speak my language." "Of course I can we are a smart species we can think things through pretty quickly." He grabbed the female's hand, "I am Chief Abel." He grinned, the officer shaking the chief's hand. "I am Petty Officer Cortez, and these are my fellow marines, I hope that you will greet us with open arms onto your planet." The large wolf looking creature would motion his people towards the marines, "You all look tired, battered, beaten and everything else." "My people will gladly welcome you we will prepare a feast! But first things first there is a hot bathing house just down this small dirt path in the city please use as you please." That's how relations started between my kind and the humans; I was seven at the time that everything had happened. We supplied resources for them to build their ship back to what was needed, they would soon be able to contact their military. They explained how there was so many resources here and the kind people that could help us if an alliance could be forged. And it was the humans gave us everything that they knew knowledge wise. They gave us guns, housing, ships all that we could ask for. The most important thing they would give us is a warning on the covenant. A vast alien race that felt it was their mission to wipe humanity from the face of the universe for religious reasons. In return for all of this, our alliance stated that we would give the humans open access to all the resources on our planet. Seeing a new and willing species they wanted the change to learn how we worked and how our bodies would react to different things compared to humans. Only higher level officers knew about the project in which the Petty spoke of. Any young child or teen warrior was to be sent to various planets and be subject to chemical tests. I was one of the children chosen for the project, being the chief's son I had to show my trust in the humans. I was a symbol for my kind, being such a young prodigy on my home planet. I never thought though, that I would never be able to see my planet again. To feel the warm breeze see my parents proud looks as I came home an accomplished hero. They took me many systems away from my family, to a planet called Harmony. That is where they put me with many other kids. I was the only one of my kind in that camp everyone else was a human. They treated me just as though I was one of those covenant freaks. I was secluded and lonely, I so badly wanted to break out of that place so bad. But thinking back to my people and what I represented kept me from leaving. The days would start to melt together, so many things happening. It seemed like the days started to go by in seconds. Morning training regiments, then afternoon classes and tactical observations. Then the addition of being pulled onto a cold metal table with people in white coats surrounding me, sticking needles into my skin and filling my blood stream full of this odd liquid. By my seventeenth birthday I had been deployed to the military giant planet Reach. They had a need for special medics such as me. There were many other Spartans there such as myself, living on base. They didn't allow us to leave ONI wanted to keep us under constant surveillance. I was a special case however. Being a medic I could work outside as a doctor for Civilians in the city of New Alexandria. A vast open , and tall open city that was a paragon of the human spirit and ingenuity. I was flown in from a UNSC frigate by a pelican straight down to the city. My armor clanking as we hit the various atmosphere barriers. To most people it would be like a ricochet of a bullet along various walls that were close together. But having fought the covenant on various planets for the past ten years, one's mind tends to forget the smaller things like that, feels like nothing more than a nudge from a fellow marine. I let out a long sigh seeing out the front of the cockpit the landing pad just in front of us. The pilot didn't pay much attention to me, I was used to it most humans kept their gun close to me when they were close to me. "If I was covenant you know I would have shot you down by now but I'm not I'm a Spartan and a higher ranking officer to you Pilot." The pelican came to a screeching halt as its wheels hit the landing pad. "Next time salute your commanding officer even if he's just a medic." Taking my helmet off the seat next to me as well as my pack, I stepped off the pelican and made my way into the ONI building. Just before entering the building, I set my bag down and put my helmet on. Still in my Spartan armor, I moved in. I didn't like people to know that I wasn't exactly a human. It wasn't that I was ashamed of being what the humans called a Lupus. It was just better for a relationship with whoever I was going into combat with or training to know that I wasn't something that they could see as a threat. The doors were a bit too short for me, being a Spartan I was quite a bit taller than the average human. Spartans and doors didn't get a long too well; we all had to duck below them to get through. AS I stepped in I gathered the attention of everyone in the room. Hearing them all whisper various things like, "Look it's a Spartan on of the UNSC Elite fighters." Not that I didn't like the popularity but there was always that occasional cold stare. My HUD would beep, telling me the amount of people in the room. It had a motion tracker on it that helped when trying to make sure no one snuck up on you. A receptionist sat at the desk in front of me shaking as if I was about to pull my gun and kill her. "Excuse me miss could you tell me where the colonels office is I need to speak to him." "It's on the top f-floor just use the elevator" she pointed off to the side of the room towards the elevator. "Thanks a million miss" I made my way to the elevator and pressed the button to go up. Once the elevator hit the ground level the doors swung open and a few marines came in and stammered before me. The shocked look on people's faces always bugged me a little bit just made it seem like I was more of a freak. The quickly moved and got out of the way , stepping into the elevator it creaked a little bit due to my weight. I practically took up the entire elevator with my size. The elevator his the top floor with a loud bang, my armor clinking under the weight. The door sliding open I made my way out into a large hallway another receptionist sitting at a desk. Without hesitation I entered into the commanding officers headquarters. He was standing in front of a large map laying out the landscape of the surrounding area. I clanked my boots together standing at attention before the Colonel. "Reporting for duty sir!" he quickly turned to face me. "Ah Petty Officer Torch, at ease please have a seat there's something I wish to speak with you about." "Sir, I don't think these chairs could handle my weight they would break immediately." The Colonel let out a deep laugh, "Well then I'll just explain the situation now." "It seems that my higher ups have heard f your work with vaccines, fighting and helping out the population of humans around many systems." He pulled a small black box out of out and placing it on the table. "Go ahead open it up, there's something in there for you." I reached for the box, opening it up to find a new shining set of rank metals. "Congratulations Commander to your new rank" he would grin widely and lean back in his chair. "I've put together a squad of marines, that will remain under your command until higher ups think you're ready for your own group of Spartans." I smiled to myself, staring down at the shining metals. "Thank you sir this really does mean a lot to me." I stood and saluted the Colonel, before leaving the room heading back down to the lobby. As soon as I stepped out of the elevator, a group of marines were standing around. I looked at them seeing a patch on their shoulder. It was a sign for water, over a large crescent moon. I had heard of marines with this marking they had been among the squads that survived harvest. New members had joined the ranks of the squad due to deaths during the war against the covenant. I noticed something out of the ordinary; a long slender tail came from one of the back of the Marines. Without even realizing it I walked up behind that marine towering over them. The marine would quickly turn around showing a cat like face. I stared at the marine with a shocked expression on my face. After all these years of being gone it was someone that was finally like me. Although they were more like a cat, "Stand at attention Marines I am your commanding officer." They all saluted me, "we've been assigned to check out an outpost a few clicks east seems something went wrong with the systems there and their medic passed away from an electrical shock leaving the area with no medical personnel, the soldiers their also need leave." I kept my helmet on, if the marines knew my face they might ridicule me. I still didn't know how they felt towards this cat girl. There was a large vehicle waiting for us outside, they were called Sabers. They were like warthogs but on a larger, like a cross between a scorpion and a warthog. That was able to carry large amounts of troops with fire power of a scorpion. The marines climbed into the back where their seats were. I walked up to the driver side seeing a marine inside. "Marine, be careful as you drive there's vital vaccine's in the back and the material that's in the cargo is fragile." The marine would nod and start up the engines, making my way back I sat on the edge of trailer. My weapon would click onto my back as mechanisms held it in place. Most of the marines in my squad had never seen a Spartan before. Most of them were staring me down and reaching out to touch my armor. They placed their hands on the burns and scratches that had been placed on my arm from the years of fighting the covenant. The large city landscape would soon get further and further away as we made our way out onto the farm lands. There were a few houses along the way but there didn't seem to be anyone around. Clicking a button on my helmet to bring up my HUD, the motion tracker wasn't showing any sign of movement outside of the Saber. The Saber suddenly came to a screeching halt launching a few of the marines off their seats. I jumped out of the back and headed to the front, banging on the driver's door. "What's the holdup marine?" he put his hand up pointing in front of him. Turning my head I was shocked. Hundreds of bodies lay dead in a bloody pile in front of a concrete wall. Who would do such a thing to innocent people? Stepping up to the dead bodies, no one in the village was thought of differently. Women, children, and men laid in the pile with shots to their heads and body. Oddly enough there was also scorch spots along the ground. There must have been a fight here, with the use of some explosive. Talking through the coms I spoke to the marines. "Marines, it looks like we have genocide on our hands, let's give these people a proper burial." I didn't believe that insurrectionist would do something like this if they were civilians but I have been known to be wrong. I brought up my arm to enter some data onto my pad. Headquarters would want to know about this, trying to get a hold of the Colonel however was impossible his line was busy. No one was picking up on the radio; the relay must have been down. "Marines, command isn't responding we'll be alone for the time being." I could see the look on the marines faces. Seeing such a massacre like this could scar someone for life. I hadn't had the chance to look over who exactly I was commanding. I could see their tags on their inner armor, "Sardon and Williams stay here clean up these bodies the rest of you follow me we're going to see if there's any survivors." Three other marines would follow me, a younger female, an older looking soldier who had a lieutenant rank on his tags, and the cat girl. "Make sure to check your corners we don't want something surprising us." We made our way through the largest building, bodies laid along the ground rubble and paper everywhere. Keeping the battle rifle close to me ready to fire at any moment when needed, putting a signal for halt I aimed down my scope. Having a special infa-red scope there was something down at the end of the hall to the right. "Move quietly" keeping crouched I moved forward with the marines. Snapping around the corner with my gun up high, I was baffled when I came around the corner. A small child with scraps on his cheek and dirt all over him incased in a bullet proof room. "I don't believe it" stepping forward I set my gun down. "Hey there little guy, can you hear me?" the little boy would nod hugging his knee's a little scared at the sight of me. "We're here to get you out of here ok? But you're going to have to be a big boy and help me out ok?" "See the button right here by the door I'm going to need you to push it." The little boy reached up just barely being able to press it, a small door only accessible by crawling opened up. "Come on out I'm not going to hurt you" the boy crawled out running to my side and hugging my leg. I couldn't help but smile a little, the female marine backed up a little. "Sir there's something out there I can hear "before she could finish something with a light blue color came flying towards us. My eyes widened, "Plasma grenade!"
