Prologue to my new Pokemon story, enjoy.

*Prologue *

_Calm, dark, and silent. That was how it always was in Eterna Forest. Home to several species of bug Pokemon, and other various small mammal Pokemon, trainers rarely visited. The forest always seemed to have a shadowy atmosphere. During the day when sunlight poured through the open canopy in the trees scores of Pokemon can be seen scurrying about, gathering food, greeting one another in a friendly matter, and just paying no attention to the rest of the world. Trainers only ever ventured through this forest to seek out Pokemon for their growing team, or as a pathway to the next City; continuing their journey.

Deep within the forest resided a looming cave. It was scarce to human eyes, making it the perfect home for any Pokemon who prefer the kiss of darkness.

A young Rattata scurried out in front of the entrance of the cave, standing up on it's hind legs and sniffing wildly. It turned it's small fuzzy head sharply towards the open maw of the cave, smelling something strong. It's face contorted to horror as a giant red head flashed out of the darkness, giving way to a mouth with rows of teeth sharp enough to break steel. The Rattata turned to flee in a desperate attempt to save itself from the harm it was about to receive. The mighty red jaws clamped shut on it's tail, making the young Rattata squeal in pain. It wriggled itself enough to hang onto the Pokemon's snout just long enough to get in a bite from it's sharp front teeth. The Pokemon roared furiously, throwing it's head up in an outrage. The Rattata was sent sailing through the air, landing in a bush of Cheri berries.

The red Pokemon snorted, gazing angrily in the direction the Rattata was thrown. Annoyed, it turned and once more disappeared deep within the belly of the cave.

A small distance from the cave was a different Pokemon. As green as the flora and fauna around it, with sharp yellow eyes. A great leaf grew from the top of it's head, with blades on it's elbows and tail. Bending down, it picked a small twig up off the ground, brushing it off briefly before biting the end gently in it's mouth, letting the end stick out. It leaned it's head back, gazing up at the burning sun. Looking forward once again, it continued on through the shrubs and trees in the surroundings.

The red Pokemon emerged once again from it's dark home, seeking out water to replenish it's thirst. The closest source of water was a shallow pond atop of the hill that stood over the cave. Only way of getting to the pond was by flying over, or climbing the soft earthy ledge. With it's sharp claws, they dug deep into the soil, providing the Pokemon with built-in hooks as if for climbing mountains. Making it's way to the top, the red Pokemon froze in place suddenly. Eyes staring dead ahead at something of alert interest.

Standing face to face, with just a small patch of water between them, the red Pokemon, and green Pokemon stared each other down for several minutes. Sizing each other up, the red Pokemon began to growl and stood tall with claws ready for a fight if it came to that. The green Pokemon smirked and stepped slowly around the pond towards the red Pokemon. The closer the green Pokemon got, the more the red one hissed and threatened to charge. Not backing down, the red Pokemon found itself utterly stupefied by the calm nature of the other approaching.

The red Pokemon shook it's head violently and roared, "CHARMELEON!" as loud as it could, sending a choke of flames bursting from it's open mouth. Now enraged, the green Pokemon stopped and replied in kind, "GROVYLE!".

The Charmeleon was stunned that this new-comer still didn't stop after the warning it just sent. Seeing no other option, the Charmeleon launched an attack, sending a jet of flame directly towards the Grovyle. As it expected, the Grovyle knew the Charmeleon would attack, and quickly dodged the attempt with a mighty jump and side roll. Fed up and out of control, the Charmeleon unleashed a powerful Dragon Rage attack at the Grovyle, getting a direct hit. The Grovyle was thrown violently into the pond, narrowly missing slamming it's head on a rock buried just beneath the soil on the edge. Dizzy and on the verge of tears, the Grovyle looked back at the Charmeleon, it having a deadly expression on it's fire-red face, snorting in succession of it's landed attack.

As the Charmeleon turned to leave, the Grovyle pulled itself onto the shore of the pond closest to the red Pokemon. Getting to it's feet, knees shaking, it let out a heart-wrenching cry of agony before falling to it's knees. The Charmeleon turned it's head back stunned, mouth open in astonishment. It stared for a moment, then looked away as it pondered what it should do next. The Grovyle said to the Charmeleon that she was the most beautiful Pokemon he had ever seen. She couldn't help but stare at him. Never in her life has any other Pokemon showed any interest in her, or even made an attempt to notice her. Immediately she thought to the attack she just hit him with, severely injuring the downed Grovyle. Looking up, the Charmeleon growled low with a hint of a snarl as she turned her head away. She asked, "how could we even be? We're different types, it would never work!"

The Grovyle stood once again, getting his strength back gradually. He looked at her with focused eyes trembling from gazing at the one Pokemon he yearned to be with. Feeling a wave of confidence growing in his gut, he muttered back to her in a soft tone, almost soothing.

"With love, it will always work, no matter if we are different types; or as it also is...different species."

She sighed, crossing her arms while considering the possibilities. He never looked away from her, the sight of her sent millions of tiny butterflies racing endlessly throughout his body. Her eyes turned soft suddenly and she began to cry. The Grovyle's soft smile turned to a concerned frown as he got closer to her, reaching a hand out to offer his support. She snapped her jaws before he could put his hand on her arm. The Grovyle kept his distance, keeping his eyes on her saddened face, cooing gentle growls to help her. He asked why she was so upset, trying not to say anything that would result in another attack.

She looked at him, sniffling and said, "I've only dreamed of another Pokemon one day coming into my life, to perhaps some day become..."

She broke off as tears started to flow down her soft red cheeks, dripping quietly off her chin onto the grassy earth below. Feeling overwhelmed, she threw her clawed paws over her face to hide her crying eyes, turning away from the now very concerned Grovyle. Thinking for a moment, the Grovyle gently patted her on the back.

"I hope I can make you feel better, but I could tell you a story I have that to this day still has me sad and often I lose sleep over it." He said.

She peered at him through a gap between two of her claws. He felt his heart melt as one of her ocean-blue eyes gazed at him. Confirming she would listen, he continued.

"A month ago, while I was still a Treecko, this young trainer found me eating berries just at the outskirts of this forest. He used one of his own Pokemon against me, in an attempt to capture and make me his own as well. I loved the forest dearly, I was born here, raised here, and it's such a quiet place, almost like a heaven on earth. I managed to defeat his Pokemon, all three of them. The reason this memory haunts me, is not because of how the trainer wanted to take me away from this place," he gestured at the forest around them, "it's from the look on his Pokemons' faces as I turned to run off into the bushes. I, in lack of a better word, destroyed his Pokemon whom he called his friends. Tortured by my strength and unbearable speed." The Grovyle rested his head in his arms, breathing in short puffs to suppress rising emotions.

The Charmeleon had her paws resting at her sides as she listened, with an expression of deep compassion on her face.

"I'm very sorry that your actions backfired upon your feelings and emotions of how Pokemon should be." She growled gently.

He ignored her words, too transfixed on the sadness now building in his chest. Feeling foolish, the Charmeleon turned to give him some space. She felt a warm hand grasp her arm, pulling her back around. He gazed into her deep eyes, feeling all his being shudder as he beheld her stunning beauty.

"Groven, my name...is Groven." He managed to say through weak lips.

"I'm Juju, spent most of my waking days in the cave just below this hill." She gestured towards it with a hand.

He gazed at her astonished, "how, and why...a Pokemon as amazing as yourself shouldn't be alone in a dark cave, you should be out showing off to the world!"

She blushed, her cheeks turning a warm shade of pink. Groven stepped in closer to her, telling her not to worry, before giving her a kiss on the cheek. Juju nearly jumped from the contact of his lips on her skin.

Kneeling down, he looked up at her glowing figure, "I promise, oh sweet Juju, I will protect you with every breath in my body, and show you the light at the end of that dark cave." Juju's mouth fell open, completely awe-struck by his words. She couldn't deny it, for her body was also surging with incredible energy. Somehow, they knew that the two of them were meant to be with one another until the end of Pokemon, and beyond.

She let out a sobbing cry of happiness, throwing her arms around Groven's neck in a tight hug. He spun her around in a circle before setting her back down, still in her generous hold. Her eyes filled with tears, she looked as far into his eyes as she thought was possible, "you are my miracle."

Groven felt his eyes water not only at her words, but at the loving expression in her eyes. It was as if she won a battle that seemed impossible to win.

Rubbing her back, he hugged her as close as their bodies would allow and said, "I'll never let anything happen to you." _
