Fur Story: Book I: The Rise - Part III
Things get serious as Jack and Rufus meet up with a stranger.
Part III
"Are you guys going to get in, or what?" He's a lot more calm in person. He's a dark grey wolf with a piece missing from his left ear, a big piece. "C'mon, I don't have all night."
"I've only been in a car once." Says Jack, getting in the back seat. "It was a cop car, too."
I stare at the wolf behind the wheel for a few more seconds as he stares at me, blood dripping from his ear. I reluctantly get in and put my seat belt on. This seems like a terrible idea. At this point, what do I have to lose?
"So, I was told that you were the guys to call when fur attacks go on." He feels at the spot where the tip of his ear used to be, keeping his eyes on the road. "Well, do I have some information for you."
"And who are you?" I ask him.
"I'm Prox. "He says matter-of-factly, never looking away from the road.
"I've never seen you before, Prox." I say to him, looking back at Jack who is looking back and forth from one window to the next. "Are you from around here?"
"Nah, Haven't been here very long, either. Talk about a warm welcome from the regulars." He points to his ear. "Been in this town for about a week. I go out, tryin' to make some friends, ya know? Maybe even something more than friends, if you know what I mean." He snickers and coughs a bit. "Well, I'm out on the town, trying to find the hot-spots. And as I'm leaving 'Rev-fur-lations' I see this fur getting his ass beat in an alley."
"Did you see who was doing it?" I ask, he's got my attention.
"Yeah, it was some cat, a lion I think; huge. Just wailn' on the guy." Prox seems a little shaken up again, glancing from the mirror to the street.
"Holy shit, Rufus! Do you think it's..." Jack butts in.
"Yeah." I cut him off. "Jean's huge-lion boyfriend"
"Even if it was him, it could have been anything." Jack tries to make sense of it. "Maybe he's a bouncer or something, the guy got out of control, and he took it out back. We don't need to be jumping to conclusions, it could be coincidence."
"Can I finish my story?" Prox seems frustrated. We both shut up and I motion him to continue. "So this lion is wailin' this guy, there's pretty much nothin' left of his face. I'm trying to see what's going on and the lion turns around and looks right at me, his paws drippin' in blood. I figure I gotta get outta there. I turn to run off and there's a human police guy standin' right there, smiling from ear to ear."
"How did you get away." Jack is on the edge of his seat listening. I can't lie, I want to know how he got away as well. "Did you shoot someone? Did you shoot the cop and steal his car, and now you're on the run?" Blurting out everything he thinks it's helping the situation.
"Jack, seriously. Quiet."
"It was some rookie cop." Prox continues when he's not being interrupted. "He wasn't after me, he was after the lion. But with me standing there, I may as well have been with him. He pulls out his gun and shoots right at me. I duck, but not fast enough. Still got me in the ear." He likes to point at his ear every chance he gets.
"So, the bullet goes right through my ear and his the lion in the arm. He wasn't very happy about that. So, he rushed toward the cop, shoving me out of the way into the wall and hits him once. He just fell, and the lion hit him one more time while he was on the ground. I could hear his skull crack as I was runnin' away."
"What did the lion do after that?" Jack asks, getting some seriousness back. "Where did you go?"
"I got in the cop's car and sped off. Had your number from some friends, called you, and drove to the park. I didn't want to be left alone for very long, I don't know who I can trust around here."
"And where did you get our number?" Jack asks suspiciously. "And, can I ask where the hell we're going?" I feel the same way. I have no idea what's going on, nor do I know where we're going, we've just been driving.
"I'm just driving, I don't really know." He says, calmly.
"You seem to be a pretty decent driver. Personally, I've never even been behind the wheel of a car and I'm a lot older than you." I say to him, I think he sees where I'm going with it.
"It's not too hard. One pedal goes, the other stops. This wheel turns. I guess I'm a natural." He's panting a little heavier than he was a few moments ago.
"Hey, how did you manage the keys to the car from that cop?" Jack is following my lead, Prox looks nervous. "I mean, you said you just ran off and took the car, how did you get the keys?"
"Well, I..." Prox pulls the car over. "He left them in the ignition, why are you two on my case?" He doesn't look nervous anymore, just pissed off. "What are you guys getting at, seriously?"
"It just seems like we've been driving for a while, into the middle of nowhere and your story just doesn't make any sense." I can see one of Jack's paws moving under his jacket. "I think we should just turn around and take this back to town, to figure out what's going on."
"Hey, when did this turn on me? I came to you guys for help." Prox is getting defensive, but I'm with Jack, all of this just doesn't add up.
"You never really asked us for help, you just told us to get us in the car and drove. Now I don't know where we are, who you are, or what you plan on doing." I visibly put my paw under my jacket, and he notices.
"Alright..." He quickly pulls out a gun, and we follow quickly after. "I didn't want it to come to this. You two have been snooping in some shit that doesn't involve you. It's bigger than a couple of small town nothings."
Jack creeps his gun to the side of Prox's head. I keep mine pointed at his chest. He can't get both of us before we get him.
"Sir, I don't think you know who you're dealing with." Jack presses his gun even harder against Prox's head, I can see it turning red.
"Give me your gun, Prox. No more furs need to get hurt. This is senseless. If you're in trouble, we can help you" I put my hand out, hoping he'd give me his gun. I was wrong.
