#1 of Dragon Legends: The Tale of Orphius

(Hey guys and gals. I was doing a system cleanup of my files when I stubbled upon this old story of mine, So I thought I may as well upload it. Any way here is the story I hope you enjoy.)

"Come my friends gather round, warm yourself by the fire and listen to my tales of the mighty dragons" announced the village chief. "I'm going to tell you the tale of the greatest dragon that ever lived. This dragon's name was Orphius."

"Orphius was one of the few dragons that fought alongside the humans and not against them, whether it was for: peace between dragons and humans; or for the destruction of the Wyvern and the Hydra's, which were plagues to both dragon and human kind, is unknown. But enough of my ranting I'll wager you all want to hear the story."

Chapter 1

"What a weird dream" Orphius whispered to himself as he looked around the cavern to make sure he hadn't awoken his mother and father. He was mesmerised by the colours on the cavern walls from a small fire in the centre of the room reflecting off the scales of his mother and father. Soon after he awoke he fell back asleep.

"What's going on" exclaimed Orphius as he slowly opened his eyes to hear a loud roar. He looked around the cavern to find his mother and father was missing. There was another roar and he decided to go to see what the commotion was about. As he got closer to the main cavern he heard a scream of pain. He ran towards the opening of the main cavern and almost rolled across the ground as he stopped to see a Wyvern holding a dragon by the neck in its mouth.

"Mother" screamed Orphius as he finally identified the green dragoness. Blood streaming down her neck from where the Wyvern was biting. His mother gasped for air then stabbed her tail sabre into the Wyvern's chest. The Wyvern let go of the green dragoness and staggered back from the injury. The Wyvern soon got ready to attack again, but saw Orphius out of the corner of his eyes and an evil grin soon accompanied it with blood dripping from his fangs.

He began to move towards Orphius a small chuckle escaping his mouth. "Maybe I should kill your son first" exclaimed the Wyvern soon followed by an evil laugh. "Orphius get out of here" screamed his mother, but fear had taken grip of Orphius and no matter how much he wanted to move he couldn't.

Soon the Wyvern was standing right over Orphius preparing to attack him and just as the Wyvern began his attack, a powerful ball of fire impacted with the right side of the Wyvern's chest, knocking the Wyvern off balance soon followed by a loud thud and a bloodcurdling roar. The Wyvern got back to his feet and lunged at the green dragoness. The Wyvern struck the green dragoness in the neck with a poison talon. The dragoness launched a huge ball of flames hitting the Wyvern in the neck and with a disgruntled growl the Wyvern moved towards the entrance to the cave. "Your time will come young dragon. Your time will come" roared the Wyvern and flew off to the hills faraway.

A few minute's passed before Orphius had finally gained control of his fear. He ran over to his mother as fast as he could. As he got closer he saw the injuries his mother had sustained and her breathing was faint. "Why couldn't I move, why couldn't I help you" cried Orphius tears trickling down the sides of his face.

"So long as you're safe my son nothing else matters to me more than your safety" whispered his mother faintly.

"I should have been able to help you but I couldn't. Why! Why couldn't I move? Why!" screamed Orphius more at his own inability to help his mother than at the Wyvern which had done this to his mother and the small trickle of tears turned into a torrent.

No more than a minute had passed when his father finally flew into the cave. His body covered in gashes, scratches, scorch marks and puncture wounds. The crimson dragon walked over next to his son and sat on his haunches looking at the limp body of his mate hearing her faint breathing. He too began to blame himself "Why wasn't I here?" but soon anger began to build up in his body and he released a roar.

"The wyverns have made their final mistake in attacking my mate and almost my son. Wyverns you will all pay!" roared the crimson dragon soon brought to his senses by a faint cough. "You must not let anger get the better of you" whispered the green dragoness. "My son you must not beat yourself up over not being able to help me" the green dragoness whispered in pain, her breathing becoming fainter and laboured. "My son I'm sorry, I will not be able to see you grow older, I'm sorry." whispered the green dragoness as she took her final breath and soon became forever silent. "Mother!!!" screamed Orphius as loud as he could.

"Son, like your mother said, don't beat yourself up for not being able to help, your mother knew what she was doing and knew what the costs might be. She loved you to the ends of the earth and it was that which made up her mind" spoke his father in a comforting tone. "Why couldn't I move, I could hear her telling me to move and I wanted to move, but why couldn't I?" asked Orphius a look of confusion on his face as he looked to crimson dragon for answers.

"The reason is probably the most common one, FEAR! Fear can prevent us from doing what we would normally do when we are in danger. In your case my son, probably the state of your mother, being one you would have never seen before, must have caused your muscles to tighten and the daunting size of the Wyvern most likely played with your mind enough to cause you to become scared, then fear must have taken hold of you" explained the crimson dragon. Orphius looked back at his father with a puzzled expression.

"My son I'm sorry for not being able to answer your question any better, but we must move the Wyvern's which attacked us ran away they know where we are and will be back with reinforcements. I think we should move south towards the Forest of Dremaron, we will stay there for the night and hopefully we will be safe there for tonight" exclaimed the crimson dragon soon seeing the hesitation on his son's face. "Son please, I know you don't want to leave her here, but we have no time to stand around here, we need to move" exclaimed the crimson dragon, soon feeling hurt at the words he just spoke. "Come on son let's go" exclaimed the crimson dragon, putting his wing around his son.

Orphius looked back only twice at the limp body of his dead mother. "No, there is still one Wyvern out here! Son head south once I draw this Wyvern away" whispered the crimson dragon. Orphius nodded to his father. "Okay, I will head south as soon as I've lost him" spoke the crimson dragon and took flight. Ten minutes after his father lead the Wyvern away from the cave, Orphius took flight and headed south. It was nightfall when he reached the forest.
