Chapter 21
Adriana was worried where Varshgar might be. He did not returned and she had doubts that the wolf will do well. She decieded to search him. But she got lost in the woods.
After Varshgar had received his most important belongings from Adriana and Darios, he immediately went outside to continue his training. It had been several hours now, and dawn was slowly breaking. The rest of the day flew by as quickly as it had begun. Darios was again busy with his books, learning more and more about the ancient history of the country. This turned out to be more and more difficult as he came across more and more texts written in an old language that was no longer used. Therefore, he had to start learning more and more of this language. Adriana, on the other hand, was worried about Varshgar. Even though he was getting more and more into shape, she knew that the fights that would be waiting for him would be hard enough. She did not want him to come to harm. She had expressed this often enough. But she knew exactly that this alone would not help. Sighing, she stood in front of the window and looked outside.
"Slowly I should get him back..." she thought to herself and looked over her shoulder to Darios. But he was so busy that he didn't notice Adriana leaving the house. She stepped out into the balmy warmth of the evening and let the gentle wind blow through her hair. Adriana directed her gaze upward toward the treetops, since Varshgar liked to stay there.
"Where are you Varshgar?" she asked herself silently.
Then she turned her gaze back to the ground and continued searching on her level. But far and wide she could not see him. Slowly she became restless and walked a little further into the forest. She ran a few more meters and tentatively called out to him:
>>Varshgar? Where are you?<<
"What am I doing here?" she thought hard. The forest began to become denser and denser and the light of the sun became more and more pale with every step she took. Hardly that it still had the power to illuminate the whole forest.
"I should probably start going back..." thought Adriana, more scared than before. But her feet carried her a little further as she still needed to know where Varshgar was and if he was alright. Little by little, the light of the sun was swallowed by the increasingly dense undergrowth on the ground. Adriana could hardly see something. It became so gloomy around her that she stopped.
>>Varshgar...?<< she now called out fearfully.
>>Where are you...?<< she asked into the forest but she didn't get an answer to her question.
She held both hands in front of her face and weighed her options.
"I could go back. That would be the best thing. Or I could keep looking... No. It's just going back." she thought to herself and turned around. She ran a few steps when there was a crack behind her.
"What was that?" she wheeled around abruptly in her mind.
>>Is someone there?<< she asked timidly but no one answered her. Slowly, she took a few steps backward, and again it cracked. But this time the noise came from the front. Exactly from the direction in which she tried to see.
"What is it?" she wondered excitedly. While Adriana had gone outside to look for Varshgar, he was on his way back to the hut. He had spent the rest of the day scouting the hills north of the hut and making a map of the area. The work had gone well, but slowly the weakening light of the sun made his work difficult. It was now time, at least for today, to finish the work and return to the hut. Varshgar was already inwardly looking forward to the delicacies Adriana might have conjured up again. Unconsciously, he had begun to rub his belly in anticipation of what would await him. When he had crossed the last hilltop, he could already slowly guess the hut. For someone who didn't know where the hut was, it would have been impossible to find it. But thanks to his impeccable sense of direction, it was no problem to grasp the small, fine details.
In his mind he went through what was on the schedule for tomorrow.
"Tomorrow I have to continue drawing. But I also want to get through some training sessions. Also, I should take a look at the cabin. I think I've discovered some minor damage there that should be repaired."
Still in thought, he walked on and came closer and closer to the hut. When he finally reached it, he went to the small shed that stood right next to it. From him, he fetched some logs that they could use for the night. When he stepped out of the shed and looked at the hut, it seemed somewhat different from usual. Varshgar looked at her for a moment more and considered.
"Something is wrong today." he thought to himself and pulled the door shut behind him.
In his mind, he went through every detail that was different, but so far everything was the same.
"Is my gut playing tricks on me?" he asked himself as he walked around the cabin to the front door. He put his right paw on the handle and at that moment it hit him.
"The smell! It's the smell!"
Varshgar noticed that usually, at this time, it smelled delicious food that Adriana had made for them. But today this smell was not there. He quickly opened the door and went inside. He looked around and saw that the stove was empty. The pot was still on the small counter. Nothing was to be seen.
>>Adriana? Darios?!<< he shouted, startled, and threw the wood on the floor. Finally, Darios, sleepy, came out from behind his books. He had to straighten up and think clearly before he could process what was going on.
>>Darios!<< shouted Varshgar who now saw him crawling out from behind his books.
>>Darios! Have you seen Adriana?<< he asked excitedly. Darios had just straightened up and came in when he noticed it too.
>>No. You're right. She is not here.<< he said confusedly.
>>Where were you?<< Varshgar asked him.
>>I must have dozed off over the old language. Sorry.<<
Varshgar shook his head.
>>You don't have to apologize. But where could she have gone?<< Varshgar asked him excitedly.
>>I don't know. She was still there when I was still with me.<<
Darios looked around the hut. He now blamed himself for spending more time with his books than with his sister.
"I should have noticed...crap!" he thought to himself.
But Varshgar went out of the hut.
>>It's dawn. The sun will set soon.<< he said.
Varshgar stretched his nose into the wind and tried to pick up their trail. He sniffed and, shortly after, had found a faint scent.
>>Darios!<< he shouted and promptly came out of the hut. Varshgar looked back at his friend and then told him:
>>I have a scent. But it's weak. Darios, I have to go. I'll bring her back.<<
Darios nodded and then told him:
>>Here, take this with you. Some torches you might need. And this.<< He put another small bundle into Varshgar's hand.
>>You might be able to use it, I thought.<< he continued, smiling.
>>Take care of yourself, friend.<< Darios added in closing. Varshgar, grateful, accepted everything he gave him and jumped up the tree. From there he followed the trail. To his surprise, it led him to the west.
"Adriana. Where did you go?" he asked himself with a worried expression.
