The Apple of My Eye Ch.1
#1 of The Apple of My Eye
Okay, so I finally finished the first chapter of this. The main reason it took so long is cause I pretty much rewrote the whole thing, while keeping the story the same. The fact that I'm pretty lazy probably had something to do with it as well.
A beaten up old pickup truck barreled down the city streets, its driver's face a mix of depression and anger. This man's name was Adam Turner. He was 23 years old with a medium build, and was quite muscular. His hair was cut short, as he preferred it, with a dark brown color to it.
His life had been rough up to this point, and showed no signs of getting any easier. He was originally from a small farm in Georgia, where he lived until the age of 10 and acquired his southern accent, but when his parents both passed away he moved to New York City to live with his uncle for 5 years. He and his uncle got along well. They were never very close, though, so Adam wasn't terribly depressed when his uncle was murdered. The incident did put him in an orphanage, however. He was never adopted, mostly due to his older age, and lived there until he turned 18, whereupon he was given a small sum of money to help him start his adult life.
He had managed to get an apartment, along with a couple of jobs in order for him to pay his bills. He had even found what he thought to be his perfect girl a couple years after leaving the orphanage, until today that is.
On the dashboard of the truck was Adam's phone, still open to the text message he had received just a few minutes ago from his dream girl, Charlotte: "Hey, please stop by my place as soon as you can. There's something I need to tell you in person." The brakes quietly squealed as the truck slowly came to a stop at a red light.
Adam dropped his head onto the steering wheel. Just when I thought everything was goin' my way, Adam thought to himself, life just sneaks up and stabs me in the back. He looked up as the light turned green and the truck proceeded on its way. First, my rent gets raised cause of that one little party. Then I get laid off, stupid economy. It probably doesn't help that I've gotten addicted to WoW. And now, the girl of my dreams up and dumped me.
Adam pulled into the parking lot of a four story apartment building and shut off his vehicle. He opened the door and jumped out, starting towards the front door. As he walked in he waved and said, "Hey, Abby"
"Oh, hey Adam. You don't look so good. Everything OK?" replied a blonde haired girl with a worried tone. Abby was one of Adam's few acquaintances.
"Yeah I'm doin' fine. If you need me I'll be in my room WoWin' it up." Adam said back.
"OK, I'll be right next door if you want to hang out or something."
"Maybe in a little while, for now I just wanna be alone." Adam started up the stairs to apartment B7. When he reached it, he put his key in the lock, turned the doorknob, and opened it.
He was greeted by a familiar sight, a small three room apartment with the main room acting as both a living room and a kitchen, a bathroom that could only be used comfortably with the door open, and a bedroom hardly big enough for a bed and a person, yet Adam had somehow fit a bookshelf in there as well. He sighed as he closed the door and walked into the bedroom.
"Geronimo" he said quietly to himself as he flopped onto the bed. Once he had made himself comfortable, he grabbed his laptop from its usual resting place on the shelf. He opened up World of Warcraft and typed in his password. Hmmmm, Adam thought, should I use my main or work on one of my alts? Oh wait, I've got a raid today. Adam double clicked on the character at the top of the list and equipped his headset. The raid went off without a hitch. Sweet, I finally beat the Lich King. Now I just hafta get Cataclysm so I can kill Deathwing. He spent the next thirty minutes grinding for gold in Northrend. He glanced at the clock. Dang, I better get off... Ten more minutes. At length, Adam got up and went through his routines for the evening.
After a dinner of frozen pizza, Adam spent the rest of the evening on his laptop, surfing the web. It was about 11:45 when Adam realized it was getting late and decided to go to bed.
Adam awoke, though for what reason he was uncertain. He glanced at the clock. 2:43. Adam noticed a strange glow coming from underneath his bedroom door. He got out of bed to investigate. As he opened the door, he wasn't sure what he was looking at. In the middle of his living room was a floating white orb, emitting the same glow that had shone underneath the door. At first Adam thought he was hallucinating, and tried to turn around to go back to bed. His body, however was not listening to his mind. In his gut, Adam felt a strange urge to walk towards the orb, to touch it, hold it. Adam's body started towards the orb while his mind wrestled for control. Before he knew it, both of Adam's hands were on the orb. He saw the room around him turn white, before everything went black and he passed out.
When Adam came to, his head was pounding, his ears were ringing, and he was on his back. He could feel a slight breeze, and the feeling of grass against his back confirmed that he was outdoors. He slowly opened his eyes, finding his vision to be quite blurred. He could see a large mass of blue, which he figured to be the sky, and blobs of white within it. At the top of his vision was a blob of orange, yellow, and brown. It seemed to move its mouth as though to speak to him, but Adam couldn't understand what it said. He shook his head and blinked a few times, allowing him to hear and see clearly. He could now see that the orange blob was actually a pony with blonde hair, green eyes, and a brown cowboy hat.
"You alright, sugarcube?" she said to him.
"Uh, yeah...I think so," Adam replied as he shakily climbed to his feet, not sure what to make of the talking, brightly colored animal. Though as soon as he was upright, he lost his balance and fell face first back onto the ground. He placed a hand on the ground next to his head to push himself back up, though he noticed that it was not a hand, but rather a brown hoof.
"AAAH! What the heck happened to me?!" Adam yelled, pushing himself upward and sitting back on his haunches. He sat there staring at the four hooves that had replaced his hands and feet.
"What are you talkin' about? I don't see anything wrong with ya, unless you mean your Cutie Mark's missin'." the orange pony said, pointing to Adam's flank.
"My what? Cutie Mark?" Adam asked, glancing at his rear, which he noticed nothing spectacular about. As he looked back he also noticed a pair of feathered wings attached to his back and that his hair had turned a royal blue. When he looked at the orange pony's flank, though, he saw the image of three red apples.
"What kinda pony are ya, anyways? First ya try stand up on your back hooves like one of those hee-yoo-mans that Lyra's always goin' on about, and now you're telling me you've never heard of Cutie Marks before?" the orange pony said with a suspicious tone in her voice.
Adam attempted to explain himself, "Okay, you're prob'ly not going to believe me, but what I'm about to say is the truth. I'm not from around here, I don't think I'm even in the right world. And I am a human, or at least I was. The last thing I remember was seeing this weird orb in my living room. Then I passed out, and woke up here."
"Hmmm," hummed the orange pony, eying him suspiciously, "Well then, where are you from?"
"Well, let's see. I'm from planet Earth. I live in New York City, New York, in the United States of America. Any of that ring a bell?"
The orange pony just stared at Adam, "I didn't understand a single thing you just said."
"Well, I guess that means I am in some other world. Oh, where are my manners, my name's Adam"
"Oh, well my name's Applejack, but feel free to call me AJ. Is Adam short for something?"
"Not really, I mean my full name is Adam Turner, but where I'm from people hardly ever call each other by their full names."
"That's an interesting name."
"Really? Where I'm from it's one of the boringest names ya can git. But I suppose I'm not at home right now. And I guess you still don't believe me about that."
"Actually, I believe your story."
"Really?"
"Yup, I could tell you were tellin' the truth just by lookin' in your eyes. I am the Element of Honesty, after all."
"Element of Honesty? What are you talkin' about?"
"I'll explain some other time. For now, I think I awtta take you to my friend Twilight, she's awfully smart, so she might know somethin' about this orb you saw." said Applejack, offering her hoof to help Adam stand. He grasped her hoof as best he could and stood up on all fours, fearing that trying to stand upright would cause him to fall again. He had some trouble walking to begin with, but he quickly got used to it.
While they walked, Applejack explained to Adam just what a Cutie Mark was and had decided that in order to help him fit in, he would go by "AdamsApple" instead of his human name. Adam originally opposed the idea, but Applejack persuaded him to go with it, at least for now. Applejack also explained the various pony races.
"...and lastly, there are the Alicorns, which have both a magic horn and wings." Applejack finished as they approached a large tree with a door with a large picture of a candle on it and a sign with the image of a book, leading Adam to believe that it was a library. "Welp, we're here," announced Applejack.
"Wait, she lives in a library?"
"Yup, she's a bit of a bookworm, so when she came to Ponyville, Princess Celestia arranged to have her stay in the library." As they walked in the door, Applejack said, "Hey Twi, I got somepony I want ya to meet."
Applejack and Adam both turned to look at a lavender pony with a dark purple mane and tail with light purple and pink highlights seated at a desk, surrounded by stacks of books. She turned around and greeted the two of them, "Oh, hello Applejack and mister..."
"The name's AdamsApple, but just call me Adam, " Adam said.
She responded, "Oh, it's nice to meet you. My name is Twilight Sparkle." She walked over to Adam and extended her hoof.
"Same here," Adam said as he shook hooves with Twilight.
From the top of the stairs came the voice of a child, "Hey Twilight, who's at the door?"
"Oh, there you are, Spike. I'd like you to meet Adam," Twilight responded to the purple and green baby dragon. Adam just stood there staring at Spike with his mouth agape. He couldn't believe what he was seeing.
"Is that a real dragon?" Adam asked.
"What's the matter? Never seen a dragon before?" Spike asked back as he approached Adam.
"No, actually. Where I come from, dragons don't even exist except in fairytales and fantasy stories," Adam answered, getting over the initial shock of seeing a dragon for the first time. "Are dragons common here?" He asked, turning towards Twilight.
"They're not especially common, no. But it's not unheard of to see one from time to time."
"Wow, I wish I had a pet dragon. What do-"
"Hey," Spike interrupted, "I'm not a pet. I'm Twilight's assistant here at the library."
"Oh, sorry. I didn't mean anything by it I swear," Adam said, attempting to apologize.
"Don't sweat it, you seem like a nice guy."
Applejack butted into the conversation, "Um, Spike? Could we have some privacy? There's somethin' that we need to talk about. Alone."
"Oh, if you're going back upstairs, could you please take these books to my room?" Twilight said as she levitated a stack of books into Spike's arms.
"Sure thing," Spike said from behind the books, obviously straining under their weight.
Once the baby dragon had waddled up the stairs, Applejack began, "Alright Twi, what you're about to hear may be hard to believe, but I trust Adam that he's tellin' us the truth."
Adam, picking up the hint, began explaining, "Okay...I'm not from this world. I'm not even sure how I got here. In my world, I'm not a pony. I'm a creature known as a human. The last thing I remember is seeing this weird glowing white orb in my living room. Then I passed out and woke up here as a pony."
Twilight stared at Adam, dumbfounded.
"Uh, Twi?" Applejack questioned, waving her hoof in front of Twilight's face.
"I'm sorry. It's just you're right, this is hard to believe," Twilight said, snapping out of her trance. She levitated a large book off a shelf and set it down on the desk, where she began flipping through the pages, "I'll need a few days to do what research I can."
"Sooo...you believe me?"
"Well, normally I would have thought you were insane. But if Applejack says you're telling the truth, then yes, I believe you."
"Well if he's stuck here for now, I suppose I oughta introduce him to the rest of the gang. Come on, Adam." Applejack said as she walked out the door.
"Alright, I'm right behind ya," Adam replied, following along.
Applejack led him to a building that appeared to be built partially out of sweets and candy.
Applejack said, "This here is Sugarcube Corner. It's one of the most popular places in Ponyville, and the best sweet shop around." As they walked in the front door, after being greeted by the sound of a bell hung above it, Applejack looked around the small store.
"There they are," she said as she spotted her friends. Adam looked in the same direction she was and saw three ponies sitting around a table. One was a bubblegum pink earth pony with poofy hair just a shade darker than her coat. Another was a cyan pegasus with a vibrant rainbow flowing down her mane and tail. The last was a white unicorn with deep purple hair in a fashionable mane-do.
"Howdy girls," said Applejack as they approached the table.
The white unicorn spoke with an air of sophistication, "Applejack, there you are. Twilight said she couldn't make it due to her studies, but you really should have warned us if you were going to be late."
Applejack replied, "Sorry, but I couldn't much help it on account of meetin' Adam here."
"So, you found yourself a coltfriend, huh AJ," the cyan pegasus said mockingly.
"Heck naw, why I just met him this mornin'" Applejack replied, a bit annoyed at her friend. "Anyway," she said turning to Adam, back to her cheerful tone, "This is Pinkie Pie..." Applejack was interrupted by Pinkie, who gave a large gasp and suddenly dashed behind the counter of the bakery and into the kitchen.
"Uh, what was that?" asked Adam, confused.
The white unicorn said, "Don't mind her, that's just Pinkie being Pinkie. I am Rarity, local fashionista and owner and proprietor of the Carousel Boutique. It's a pleasure to meet you." Adam attempted to speak, but was cut off by the cyan pegasus.
"And I'm Rainbow Dash, best flyer in Equestria and number one weather pegasus in Ponyville."
"It's nice to meet all of you," Adam said with a smile. He noticed Applejack searching for something.
AJ Asked, "Say, where's Fluttershy?"
"Being a crybaby, as always," said Rainbow Dash.
Rarity was the next to speak, "Oh, I feel just terrible about what happened. She had gone to retrieve the box of cupcakes we had ordered, but on her way back to the table, she tripped and the whole box fell out onto the floor. She was probably afraid we would be mad with her, and as sensitive as she is, she ran out the door before we could say anything."
Applejack sighed. "I better go talk to her."
"I'll come with ya." Adam said as he followed Applejack out the door.
Adam followed Applejack to a small cottage just on the edge of a forest. He could see lots of small woodland creatures roaming around the premises. Applejack walked up to the door and gave it a knock, "Fluttershy? You in there?" she said to the door. A quiet voice spoke from inside,
"Please go away."
Applejack said, "Come on now, its me, Applejack."
"Please just leave me alone" said the quiet voice, this time a little louder.
"Let me try," Adam offered. Applejack stepped away from the door while Adam walked up to it. "Fluttershy, please open the door. We're not mad at you." After Adam had said this, the door began to open. "See, was that so OOF!" Adam fell on his haunches, dazed and confused after being hit in the head with a vase.
"Oh, I'm so sorry!" said a butter yellow pegasus with long pink hair, pushing Adam inside. Applejack attempted to follow them inside but the door slammed shut before she could get in. She groaned in frustration.
"Again, I'm really sorry." said Fluttershy, rummaging through a drawer in search of a bandage, "And so is Angel. Angel, say you're sorry." The small white rabbit to whom she was speaking simply turned away from Adam in contempt. Fluttershy walked back to Adam, bandage in hoof, and applied it right above his eye. Adam hadn't even noticed that the vase had broken and cut him.
"Thank you,"Adam said, blushing slightly. The way Fluttershy had acted reminded Adam of his mother. "What happened?"
"Well I was about to let you and Applejack in, but then Angel threw the vase, and when I brought you inside he shut the door again."
"Well that's not very nice" Adam said, glaring at the rabbit. "Listen," Adam continued, "I heard about what happened at Sugarcube Corner. Your friends aren't mad at you. In fact, they feel awful about what happened." Fluttershy responded,
"Oh, I know, but I'm still afraid to go back and talk to them."
"Well nobod-, I mean nopony said you had to right away, I'm sure they'll understand. In the meantime, would you mind if I stuck around for a few minutes? I've been walking all around ever since I got here and I'm kinda tired."
"Of course, I never turn away a weary soul." After Fluttershy said this, there was a small thumping noise. They both looked to see that it had come from Angel thumping his foot on Flutershy's hind leg. "Oh, right, lunch time." She said. She walked over to a large brown sack, lowered her head into it, and pulled out a carrot with her teeth. "There you go Angel," she said handing it to the rabbit. Angel took it and bounced out the open back door to Fluttershy's backyard. "Would you like to help me feed the other animals?" She asked Adam.
"Sure, I've always loved animals," Adam responded. As they walked outside, Adam could see Applejack waiting in front of the house. He walked over to the fence and whispered, "Psst, AJ" She walked over upon noticing Adam, "I talked to Fluttershy and she knows you're not mad at her, she's just not ready to go back and face everypony just yet. You can head on back to Sugarcube Corner, I'm gonna stay here a while."
Applejack responded, "Alright, when you're done visitin', we've got an extra room at Sweet Apple Acres that you can use for now." She began walking away as Adam went back to Fluttershy, who hadn't even noticed he had left. Fluttershy turned to Adam, dropping a sack in front of him.
"Here's a bag of bird seed, could you please fly up and fill up all the bird feeders?"
"I don't know, I've never really flown before," Adam said hesitantly.
"What do you mean never flown before?"
"Well...," Adam was trying to think of a believable cover story, "Both of my parents were earth ponies, and were a bit anti-pegasus, so I've never gotten to use my wings a lot."
"Oh, that's terrible. I could teach you if you want."
"Really? That'd be great!" Flutershy spent the next few hours teaching Adam how to fly. He soon got the hang of it, but not without bumping his head a few times. Once Adam was confident in his flying capabilities, he helped Fluttershy with her chores and make up for lost time. As they were finishing up, Adam noticed some approaching storm clouds.
"I guess we got done just in time, looks like there's a storm comin'."
"A storm? That's odd. There wasn't any storm in the weather schedule."
"Well, we should get inside anyway," Adam said as they both landed in front of the door. Adam let Fluttershy enter first, before closing the door behind him. The sound of rain falling soon started.
"I don't guess I'll be able to go to Sweet Apple Acres till this storm clears up." As Adam said this, his stomach gave an audible growl. He looked at the clock. "Dang. 8:30 already? Feels like I just got here."
"I've got some food in the kitchen, if you would like some," Fluttershy said, starting towards it.
"Sure, I'm so hungry I could eat a horse." Adam replied, thinking nothing of what he had just said.
"A what?" Fluttershy popped her head from behind the doorway with a "Say what?" look on her face.
"I-I mean a house. A-a house. Heh heh." Nice save, he said to himself sarcastically. Fluttershy, satisfied with his answer, went back to work in the kitchen. Adam took in his surroundings.
The inside of Fluttershy's cottage was pretty much what one would expect. Plain wood walls, floors, and ceilings. A sofa against the wall with a coffee table in front of it. The rafters appeared to have been made so that the small creatures that Fluttershy cared for could climb on them so as not to get in the way. There were also a few birdcages and pictures hanging about. Most of them were paintings of nature and other such things.
Adam then began to reflect on what had happened today. He had woken up in a new body, in a new world. He had met somepony that had trusted him almost immediately. That never would have happened back home. Not only that, but for the first time in a long while, Adam felt happy. Most of the things he did for fun were just to distract himself from the world around him. He had nothing against his homeworld, he just preferred to not think about it. Nothing had made him truly glad for the past 4 years of his life. Yet here he was, in some far off place, feeling happy about simply being here. It was almost as if the very ground exuded happiness, which was then absorbed by all the living things in this world. He was shaken from his thoughts when lightning struck outside. The thunder was not far behind, causing some of the pictures to rattle in their frames.
"Oh my, that sounds really close. Its a good thing I had that lightning rod put up recently." Fluttershy said, standing next to the coffee table, on which were two sandwiches positioned on plates.
"Finally, some grub," said Adam as he eyed the food hungrily. Another lightning strike followed by thunder. He walked over and took a bite out of one of them as Fluttershy ate hers. Adam wasn't sure what was on it, it had an earthy flavor, but was slightly sweet at the same time.
"Say, what's on here?" He asked once he swallowed his first bite.
"Um...grass and daisy on wheat. Do you not like it? I'm sorry." Fluttershy responded.
"Like it? I love it!" he said as he hungrily took another bite of his sandwich. The rest of their meal was spent in relative silence, rain pounding on the roof and thunder sounding every now and then. Once Adam had finished, he let out a yawn. He realized that he was quite tired from today's events.
"So, where am I sleepin'? It doesn't look like this storm is gonna clear up anytime soon and I can't go anywhere until it does."
"Oh, um...I don't have any extra beds, but you can use the sofa...If that's alright with you."
"That'll work just fine. Thank you," Adam walked over to the window and looked out. He had always enjoyed watching lightning. He simply stared out the window, admiring the bright flashes of light against the night sky, followed by the booming thunder. Fluttershy walked up next to him and joined in admiring the beauty of the storm. Adam's focus came to rest on a large tree that was only a few yards away from the cottage. It appeared to be a fully grown pine tree, just like the ones that grew around his childhood home. Out of nowhere, a lightning bolt hit the tree. The resulting thunder was so loud, it caused Adam and Fluttershy to both close their eyes in pain. Once the ringing had subsided, Adam heard a loud cracking noise. He whipped his head around to the window, where he saw the tree getting larger. No, not larger, CLOSER!
Adam turned and tackled Fluttershy, yelling "HIT THE DECK!" Adam laid on his stomach with Fluttershy to his left. They both had their front hooves over their heads. After what seemed like an eternity, he heard the tree smash into the cottage, causing it to start falling apart. He kept his head down and his eyes closed as the falling bits of house made a commotion almost as loud as the thunder that had sounded not long ago. Once the chaos had ended, he opened his eyes. The rafters had fallen in just the right place, creating somewhat of a bubble under the rubble. There wasn't enough room to stand, but he managed to lift his head.
"Fluttershy, are you all right?" Fluttershy whimpered in response.
Adam turned his head to look at her, "Fluttershy?" Fluttershy still had her hooves on her head and she sounded like she was crying. Oh, crap, thought Adam, she's crying. What do I do? Um...
"Hey now, why are you crying? You're not hurt, are ya?" Adam said as he extended his left wing, laying it across Fluttershy's shoulders, much the same way a human would with their arm.
"No...I'm not...hurt," she said between sobs, putting her hooves on the floor, "but...now...we're trapped...under here."
"Well, don't worry, I'm sure we'll be out of here before too long."
"R-really?" Fluttershy said, looking at Adam.
Adam looked into her large, pleading eyes. It was the saddest and cutest thing Adam had ever seen in his life. It reminded Adam of an abandoned puppy out in the rain, looking up at a person to take him home, to take care of him, to love him.
"Without a doubt. As soon as your friends notice we're missing, they'll come looking for us. And I promise that I won't leave you here alone. It's not like I could go if I wanted to."
Fluttershy leaned against Adam and laid her head against his neck. She whispered, "Thank you."
"No need to thank me," said Adam, enjoying the warmth coming from Fluttershy's body. Adam looked at the debris around them. "It doesn't look like there's a way for us to get out right now. We should probably just try to sleep and conserve our energy."
"That's alright, as long as you're here with me, I'll be okay."
"Really? You trust me that much?"
"Yes, I do. I don't know why, but even though I just met you today, I don't feel so shy around you. I feel...safe when you're with me," she said as she drifted off to sleep.
"Wow." That was all Adam could think to say. He just sat and stared at the mare laying on him. Even though he was still getting used to everyone around him being ponies, he thought she looked beautiful. Not even Charlotte could compare. He closed his eyes and laid his head on hers. Before long, they had both fallen asleep.
