Chapter 1

Save yourself, I'll hold them back

The tree trunk exploded as a laser bolt connected with it instead of the dark figure that it was intended for. The shooter, a Draculoid, ran through the snowy forest trying to catch up with its prey. It cursed as it looked around, the white laser pistol it carried leveled with its shoulder. The forest was dense and had ankle deep piles of snow on either side of what may have been spring rain runoff trail; but instead was a trail of sorts in full winter. Thick pine trees and spruce were as far as the eye could see the deep scent of pine and cold was almost intoxicating as it hit the Drac's nose, throwing off his sense of smell.

A twig snapped somewhere from above. The Drac spun and looked up but was too slow to avoid being tackled to the ground. The laser pistol was knocked from the Drac's hand and lost somewhere in a snow bank. As the two wrestled on the ground, the Drac's prey rolled sharply to the left, bringing the Drac's knee in contact with a jagged rock. The Drac yelled out in pain as the dark figure jumped up, delivering a swift kick to the Drac's ribs before running off into the forest.

The Drac lay on the ground for a moment holding its knee and ribs before getting up with a growl and chasing down the figure again, limping from its injury. Catching sight of its target again, the Drac fired. It narrowly missed its target as the dark figure evaded the blast by running behind a tree. Three more quick blasts missed the figure as it darted behind some rocks. The figure pulled a black laser pistol from its holster, cocking the gun. The person removed a pair of dark goggles to reveal the deep emerald feminine eyes of a Vixen.

She took a few deep breaths and turned slightly looking over the rocks at the Draculoid that was chasing her. It didn't see her as she raised the gun and aimed at its head. She took a breath, held it a moment, then exhaled before squeezing the trigger. The laser bolt hit the Drac as it turned round and saw her.

"Too slow." She said smugly.

The Drac had caught the laser bolt in the chest to the right of its heart, it fell to the ground, and a second gun the Vixen hadn't seen falling from the Drac's hand. The Vixen walked slowly over to the gun. Picking it up, she aimed both at the Drac who was wheezing and coughing.

"You can either die slowly and painfully, or quickly. Which is it? This offer only stands once." She cocked both guns. The Drac coughed.

"Kill me" it said and the Vixen pulled the trigger without hesitating a moment.

The fading sunlight glinted off the snow and made the sky orange round the edges as the last rays highlighted the paw fur of a female polar bear. She stood in the door of a multicolored Bronco, a pair of binoculars in her paws.

"Where the hell is she?" said the polar bear as she scanned the tree line. Nearby, a dark haired snow leopard female paced, her thin spotted tail flicking back and forth.

"I don't know, but I'm starting to get worried." The leopardess said to the Polar Bear. They both sighed, sending tendrils of smoky breath into the chill evening air.

"Its getting dark, we're gonna have to go. You know we can't stay out here at night," Said the Polar Bear, scanning the trees again, "Wait! I see her, shit! Get the kit." The she bear dropped the binoculars and took off in a dead run toward the figure coming out of the forest. The leopardess ran after her with what looked like an old lunch bag. The closer they got the more detail they were able to make out. She was covered in blood.

"Sun! What the hell happened?" yelled the Leopardess as she got closer. The vixen held up a gloved paw.

"It's not my blood, damned Drac." The vixen said as she took off a woolen hat letting her long, dark hair fall, she looked up showing her red fur matted with the Drac's blood. She wiped a paw across her muzzle and looked at it. It was hard to believe how much blood there had been.

"Hopefully they will find that one and leave us alone for a while." Sunshine said. As she stripped off the black poncho she wore over her clothes. Then she looked at the Polar Bear.

"Angel, were you two followed?" Sunshine said balling up the poncho and throwing it as she started to walk toward the bronco. Angel and the leopardess followed behind Sunshine.

"No, we weren't followed." Said the Leopardess as she looked over the fox.

"I'm fine! Look, the ass couldn't shoot for shit. He hit I don't know how many trees and probably a feral or two out there. I took one shot and I had him dead to rights. He asked for it," she shrugged "C'mon, we have to go we can't stay out here much longer."

"I'll drive," Said Angel as the three made their way back to the bronco. The snow was almost thigh deep so it was more of a trudge then a walk.

"Give me the keys Nova." She said holding her paw out for the keys. Sunshine crawled into the back of the bronco as Nova the leopardess and Angel the Polar Bear got behind the driver seat.

"Let's kick it." Angel said as she started the SUV and the drove off to their hideout as the snow started to fall again.

As the multi colored SUV drove down the road the CB radio started to broadcast static and a voice.

"That's probably Motor trying to figure out if were alive or not." Nova picked up the mic "Hey Motor, were 15 minutes out we're still alive and we'll be home soon." She laughed and clicked off the mic.

"Hydrogen Nova, Sunshine Blasta, Demolition Angel; this is Motor Mount. I need you to pick up the dry cleaning, we have guests coming later. Pick up the flowers. Motor Mount signing off" the males voice sounded choked as he stopped speaking. The channel wasn't completely cut off as they began to hear rustling and noise. Almost as if a struggle had broken out. Then a new male's voice came over the speaker.

"You are charged with sedition and terrorism. Your sentence is death, do you have any last words." The male said this last part as more of a statement then a question.

"Save yourself, I'll hold them back." Motor said spitting what could only be blood before the sound of a laser pistol went off and the CB went dead.

"Motor over, say again!" Nova shouted into the mic. Angel put a paw over her mouth and blinked back tears. A gun cocked in the back seat, Angel looked in the rear view mirror. Sun nodded and Angel turned the wheel sharply and made a very impromptu u-turn.

"What no! Stop we have to go back for Motor! We can't leave him!" Nova shouted looking back at Sunshine, her icy blue eyes filled with tears.

"You heard what he said Nova," Sun sighed and blinked back tears "you know what that meant. Angel, stop by the depot. We need supplies before we get the hell outta here." Nova turned back around and looked at Angel who had silent tears running down her furred cheeks.

Sun looked around making sure they weren't followed she crawled over the seat to the back of the bronco and checking what little supplies they had.

"We're gonna have to clear out the whole depot. We've got almost nothing here, and besides that, we're going to have to trade for stuff too." Sun climbed back over the seat. Nova sobbed silently and watched the road as she gripped the mic hoping that Motor would come back on and tell them everything was alright.

After 10 miles the mic started to make a buzzing static sound and Angel turned it off as the got to the depot. Sunshine crawled in the back and opened up the back hatch.

"Okay Angel, keep it running. Nova, I'll cover you. Let's do this quickly before we all freeze our tails off or any more Drac's show up. The Gods know they will be looking for us by now" Sun said as she looked at her sisters. Before Angel stopped the bronco, Nova jumped out with Sun right on her tail.

"What do we need?" Nova asked as she threw open the door.

"All of it. We're going south... we can't stay up here anymore." Sun said as Nova handed her box after box as Sun placed it with the rest of the supplies in the depot in the back of the bronco. It only took them a few moments to pack up everything they needed. As soon as they were in Angel pushed the pedal to the floor and they took off southward.

"You know that we winter animal's won't fair too well in that desert heat." Angel said as she pulled onto a highway that lead south.

"And we just get up and go" Sun said as she watched the desolate road go by a single tear fell from her emerald eyes for Motor.
