I sat in the back seat of the car with my spotted arms crossed.
"I'm not going!" I shouted. I knew it was inevitable that I'd have to go. I must have had some comfort in the small chance that they would turn around and drive back home. Elementary sucked, junior high sucked, why would high school be much different.
Me and my family had hopped city after city, always leaving after a month or so because of me. As if you didn't guess, I got beat up a lot. When I first started school, I was picked on for being the only dalmatian in the school. So, I figured my species was the problem, but entering junior high, I find out a dalmatian is top dog in the school. Cruel irony. Maybe it's a string of bad luck, maybe it's my personality, I could never figure it out. So, after I changed schools a few more times, I tried to hide behind a mask. Pretend to fit into the other furs groups, I never could pull it off, cause they just mocked me and I got beat up again.
My dad started to get angry, "We paid for the school, you're going, and that's that!"
I gave up quicker than I thought I would. I sighed knowing what would happen when I walked in the doors. I brushed my paw across my black golf shirt and my dark blue jeans.
"Alright, fine." I said automatically, and just got out of the car like I had over 2 dozen times before we move here. I hadn't even bothered asking where we had moved either, I knew dad could get a job somewhere else, if mom asked enough times. She always did.
I dreaded the routine of the first day at school though, I was smart enough to pass classes no matter how many times we moved a year, I had only lost a single year in the confusion. So there I am, a dalmatian weakling being dropped off by his parents, and just an added bonus, I'm a freshman too.
"Well, school looks cool at least. Not that it really matters." I said to myself and sighed again.
I kind of felt bad too. This didn't look like one of the cheap schools I've been accustomed too. My parents must of forked over extra dough they didn't have. They won't even get their deposit back, so why should they of done it. I know they love me, but they didn't think this through. The school was called Ocean Avenue High. It had this in big gold letters over the top of the crimson double doors of the school. On both sides of the gold letters had water streaming out and collecting in the small stream ways mounted to the side of the school. I though about how much of a waste it was to make that, when someone practically ran over me, knocking me to the ground. I fell on my back pretty hard, but I barely noticed since I was so used to pain by now, I practically learned to ignore and adapt to it. We moved anyway after I told them I was fine, every time.
So, I'm lying on my back on the concrete leading up to the stairs, and I'm thinking: "Why I should bother getting up?" I was ready to just die right there, the only reason I hadn't, ya know, ended it all, was because of my parents. I hadn't the heart to give up on life because of them, they would die for me, they couldn't bare to know anything even happened to me, let alone that. Right now though, all I thought about was all the furs who have made my life a living hell, and thought, screw it I'll just die here, I wont move, I'll just sink into the ground and nobody at this place would give a shit.
Then I heard something that just left me dumbfounded. "Oh shit man, are you alright?"
Someone asked if I was okay? Nobody had done that but my parents, not teachers, and never ever even a chance from another student. I opened my eyes and looked up, and of all furs to be nice to me a cat was looking back at me with a worried expression on his face. He looked like cat at first anyway, his face does. He must be half fox. He had fox ears, had black fur from elbows to paws white underbelly and a evening blue fur coat. His face was white around his short muzzle and cheeks, and he had brilliant blue eyes, he had a blue fox tail with a black tip swishing behind him. He wore a black jacket and a wife-beater shirt, with some grey jeans. I actually thought he looked pretty cool, like he would be one of the popular furs that would beat the hell out of me cause they felt like it. What shook me more than his appearance was that he was being nice to me. I'd waited years for this, I can't say the wrong thing.
"Did you hear me man?" I thought shit say something, anything! A sharp pain in my ear prevented my from doing that. Then I felt my ear and a piece of it was missing, blood dripping onto my paw. Shit it hurt like hell. I started whimpering in pain and then he noticed it.
"Damn, I'm sorry, follow me, I'll lead you to the nurse." I reluctantly followed him, still not sure whether anyone would do that for me. I started to relax a bit after we got through the main entrance of the school. It turned out that that waterway outside the school ran throughout the building, down the railways of stairs was a flow of clear water, emptying in the drain placed at the bottom of the stairway, of course the nurses office wouldn't be up there. We took a left down the hall passing too many furs to count all gawking at my bleeding ear. I heard comments like, damn that must hurt, ewe nasty, and he's bleeding all over my clean floor! I think one of the cheerleaders threw up. I smiled a little at that, they were always really bitchy whatever school I was in. But, I was also worried that too much of my ear was gone, to even be considered an ear.
We got to the nurse's office, typical office, medicine cabinet, counters, sink, a screen for more severe patients, and patient bed which I usually was. The nurse was a rather short raccoon, she went straight to work when she seen what was wrong.
"Come over here and lay back." she commanded. I obeyed and lay back still holding my ear to try and stop the bleeding.
"Let me see the ear son." she said quickly. With shacking paw I let go of what was left of my ear, and she just grimaced.
"It's as bad as it feels isn't it?"
"Let me put it this way, anyone else on the planet would be rolling and howling right now. I'm getting you a sedative, the pain must be unbearable." She rummaged through the cabinets and found a needle washed in and filled in with some kind of fluid. I hate needles so I started whimpering again.
"All that pain in the ear and you feel more pain looking at a needle? You are something else kid!"
"Just use it, please!" She told me to lay on the gurney, so I did, then she stuck it in and I yelped quietly. Then she wrapped up my ear so it looked whole again. It still hurt.
"How's that feel?" she asked.
"Better, (sigh), all things considered."
"Do you need to head home for rest? It's all right if you do, as long as you let me know how this happened." The fox, or whatever he is, started to look really guilty and spoke up.
"Uh, that's kind of my fault." he said interrupting quietly.
"I know all the students that have attended this school Shadow, so I know this fellow is new. How could he have done something so bad that you would to this to him!" she scoffed at him.
"No no, that's not it at all!" he said putting his hands up defensively.
"As I said," she had a wicked smile creep across her face, "I know every student to attend this school. you take better care of what you're doing from now on. I've got my hands full around here as it is."
"Sure thing nurse Lilia." he said and smiled back. Then he returned his attention back to me, and started to help me up off the gurney.
"Hi again, look I'm real sorry about your ear, please i didn't mean it!" he pleaded scratching behind his head.
"That's okay, I guess, what caught on my ear anyway?" He took his bag off and showed me a bunch of key-chains hanging off his backpack. The one that was covered in blood still, was ironically a four leaf clover. Modified obviously. But still, you could tell what it was. It was like a clover ribbon each leaf looping back onto itself. Each leaf of the clover was sharp and pointed, and it was just a solid piece of bent up metal. I thought it looked like a spiky ball of death to be honest. But that was probably cause it practically ripped my damn ear off.
"It's my lucky charm, the women I bought it from said "It will lead you to new adventures." She was a real whack job but she begged me to take it, I grew to like it afterwards anyway. I never got what she really meant, and now I met you. I guess meeting someone can be an adventure in itself. Anyway, my name's Shadow Prowler." Shadow put out a paw to shake.
I was confused, all my life nobody was nice to me but my folks. I guess if he didn't want to be my friend, he wouldn't of bothered to stay with me while the nurse tended my wound. I normally don't give my hopes up, but this really sounded sincere. So I got up the courage to shake back and answer, "Jake Firenze." I smiled. I wasn't getting beat up, laughed at, or hurt in any way. It really seemed too good to be true.
"So, what's your first class?" He asked me. That's when I realized I had no idea. Getting my ear caught before the door, I had no time to pick up a time table from the office.
"Crud, I don't know, where's the office?" He gestured down the hall.
"Go this way make a right, and it'll be right by where we came in."
"Alright, thanks Shadow." I smiled at him again. Then the bell for class rang.
"I'll see you around Jake, gotta get to class." He turned and started to run up the stairs.
"Wait," I called. I could ask him to be my friend right? He was cool, he stayed with me while I got fixed up. "What class do you have next?" That's what I said instead, and of course I regret it, I wanted to invite him over right then and there.
"Social" he shouted back. Then he waved and he was gone. I absently waved back and turned to go to the office. I sighed, I only thought of my potential friend the whole way to the office. Do we have same interests? What if I ask him to hang and he says no? Just question after question, and I didn't really know the range of responses I could get, from good to bad. He could be my best friend, or torment me and stab me in the back.
I reached the office and approached the front desk, told them of all what happened with my ear and why I was late. They gave me a sheet with my classes on and told me to hustle to class. They even told me to get better. Maybe it was a long string of bad luck that was the cause of everything. All I hoped is that the luck lasted long enough to get a new friend, an only friend. Then I glanced at the time table sheet. Social wasn't my first class, it was MATH. Damn that's a bad sign. I always had nasty math teachers. Nasty mean, not nasty ugly... actually, maybe it was both.
I seen the room numbers of classrooms going across the doors and eventually figured out the order they were going. 192.. 194 ... 196 ... 198...
"Argh!" Why didn't I think of that? "It's on the second floor dumb ass." I said then cursed at myself.
When I finally got there, I was about 12 minutes late. I tried to open the door and it was locked. Sigh
I knocked on the door and waited to be let in. This was going to be bad. One of the other furs in the class let me in, a girl cheetah, she was pretty cute actually, but I had no real time to think about it.
"Hello son, are you in this class?" a short snow owl at the front said. He could barely reach the white board, I had a hard time keeping a straight face for a second, then I composed myself and told him I was. His mood instantly change to that of anger.
"Then why are you late? It's very rude to show up late to class young man!" he said rather harshly. I winced and was about to answer, but then a random fur in the classroom chimed in.
"That's the guy, Mr. Winters that's the guy we were telling you about, someone ripped his ear clean off." a doberman at the far side of the room said
"Yeah leave him be, that must hurt." another fur, a bat it looked like.
"Really, I'm terribly sorry, you must have been with the nurse. Take the empty seat in the back next to Tennial and Claudia." Sweet, no stupid intro to embarrass myself, no real scolding from the teacher, and the teacher didn't even seem that bad. My life was going right.
I walked over to my new seat next to Tennial, a bat. He gave me a toothy smile that kind of creeped me out. He must of noticed cause his ears when back and he looked down. Crap, I didn't mean to cause that! I was scared to say anything do to something bad happening again, but that look was just killer. I saw pain in those eyes that I've felt before, even if craps happened to me before, I couldn't just let it happen to someone else. I said
"Sorry, you just scared me, my name's Jake." His ears perked up and he said his was Tennial. Of course it wasn't long before the teacher told us to be quiet, but I was beaming. He even asked me to hang out tomorrow. I have never been so happy in my entire life. I lost my ear, yeah that's pretty bad, I still don't know how much. But these guys are being freaking awesome friends and I just met em! I guess I should of introduced myself to the cheetah Claudia sitting on the other side of me, but I chickened out. She was too cute, I couldn't bare to screw it up. I was just gonna lay back and enjoy good things happening for once.
My parents always told me that everything in life happens by chance. It's what you do with the luck that makes you the person you want to be. So, I think all that bad luck has harboured all this good karma for me. That missing ear, that one instance of the morning, one of the worst moments of my depressed state of mind in life, had been completely forgotten. I was free of the curse I had on myself, and things could only do up from here. What are the chances that a four leaf clover ripping my ear would be the thing to turn it around. Never used to believe in luck, but I guess I do now.
Well, whatever happens after today, all that can be said is that it'll be the luck of the draw.
Well that's the first chapter of Ocean Ave. If you like it please comment, (makes me feel good)
