A New Life, Chapter 4

Brande lay on his his back against a pile of soft furs, staring up at the roof of the tent. Tairn had escorted him to the edge of the encampment to a rather small, recently-pitched tent and told him to get some rest before retiring back to his own tent. Upon entering, Brande had found a small bowl of strange fruits resting on a table near one of the three corners and a small bedding of soft furs stacked upon one another. He didn't bother with the food; he felt to sick to eat anything. Instead, he had stripped off his shirt and plopped onto the bedding with an exhausted sigh. The bull closed his weary eyes, feeling the strands of fur from the pelts warming his back.

Lying there, he was unable to keep thoughts of what the old minotaur had told him. How could she think such things about him? He was nothing, a weak soul waiting for the sweet embrace of death to take it away. He couldn't help but feel hopeful, however. What if things were truly going to change for the minotaur? Would he even be accepted here? He remembered Tairn's remark about his appearance from before.

Brande let out a long sigh before sitting up. It was obvious to him that he wasn't going to find any sleep tonight. He got back up to his hooves and pushed through the flap of the tent out into the cool night air. The fur on his chest glistened slightly from the moonlight as he stretched his muscles. Looking from side to side, he noticed that everyone that was still away before had all gone back to their tents. Smiling slightly, he walked away from the cluster of tents, not really caring as to where he was going. He just needed some air and time to think.

The ground was covered in thick, tall grass that reached up past his ankles. It wasn't too difficult to find his way around due to the illumination of the moon. Brande took a deep breath. The air felt... Fresh. Unlike the stale air from Earth. He closed his eyes for a moment, taking in the suculant air into his lung. Smiling, he continued onwards.

Brande found himself climbing a steep hill and when he reached the top, his eyes stood agape and his mouth ajar. The land broke off from a rocky cliff and from there, he could see for what he felt like miles. The area below was speckled with trees and a large oasis lay in the midst of it all. It was spectacular... Brande stood there for what seemed like ages before he managed to tear his eyes away. It was like... He had seen this all before. His mind flashed back to the visions. He had stood with arms open and tears running down his furred cheeks but it was all swept away from him before. But this... Was real.

"Well, what do we have here?" a deep, crackling voice called from behind Brande. Jumping slightly, he turned around and was met with a dark face nearly a foot away from his snout. It was covered in pitch black fur with a small tint of purple. The face was stretched into a grinning muzzle that almost resembled a wolf's. Its form was slightly hunched over with dark fur covering its muscular body. It, or he as he could now see was naked save for a small loincloth wrapped around his waist. Brande also couldn't help but notice the long claws petruding from both of its paws.

The beast chuckled softly. "I think this little Taurhe wants to play..." He reached out a paw and groped the front of Brande's pants, causing him to let out a small yelp. Brande shoved the beast away roughly, causing him to stagger backwards slightly. He snarled and snapped his jaws at Brande. "I see how this is going to be."

The beast lept towards him, knocking him to the ground with the creature right on top of him. Brande let out a loud "oof!" as he felt the air get knocked out of him. He felt something sliding along his chest. He looked down and saw the grinning beast looking up at him as he slid a claw along his chest. Brande growled and struck his fist upwards, connecting with the beast's muzzle. He stumbled backwards off Brande, giving him enough time to get back up to his hooves and to raise his fists in anticipation. The wolf creature simply looked up at him and grinned. Brande soon felt a pair of arms wrap around him, pinning his arms back.

The beast in front of him got back and walked back over to the struggling bull. Grinning wildly, he trailed his paw along his chest down to his chest slowly before reaching back and striking Brande straight in the stomach. He renched over and coughed violently, tasting blood. Slightly dazed, he struggled to pull away from his captor's grip, but was unable to. The beast in front of him grasped Brandes chin and brought him to eye level.

"Now, we're going to have to get these off, aren't we?" Brande tried to pull away again as he gripped the sides of his jeans. Brande roared loudly and stomped his hoof backwards into the attacker behind him, hearing a loud crunch. The attacker let out a howl and fell back, allowing Brande to tackle the beast in front of him. Pure rage filled Brande's veins as he drove his fist into the beast's face. He snarled and clawed Brande's chest. Brande continued punching the beast's face until he was pciked up from behind and thrown to the side. He looked up and noticed the other attacker had drawn a knife and was walking towards him.

Brande felt energy surge through his veins. It was like adrenaline, but... Different. It built up in his chest and he felt like he was going to explode if he didn't let it free. Extending his arms out wards with his palms facing upwards at the beast, the energy surged through his hands, igniting them with a blast of blue fire that flew towards the beast's chest, causing him to fly into the air. Brande turned towards the other attacker that was making his way back to his feet and engulfed him in flames. The wolf creature screamed in agony and flailed its way off the side of the cliff.

Brande sat there in the grass, panting as the fire that flickered on his outstretched hands died down. Turning his palms towards his face, the stared at the unseared fingers. Was that... Magic? He got himself up slowly, still shocked at what had just occurred. He looked around, checking if any more creatures wanted to try and sneak up on him before heading back towards his tent.

By the time he got back, he noticed the sun already starting to rise along the horizon. He ducked back into his tent and laid down on the furs, completely drained. He let out a long sigh before closing his eyes and falling into deep sleep.
