Meet the Black Stars; Wintro's Story
#6 of Meet the Black Stars
[Milky Way Galaxy; Inner Worlds, United Nation Special Forces VALOR Military, Carrier-Destroyer Titan Class cruiser (On Route to Saturn Station). Briefing Room, Year 3,588 A.D, July 18th, 3:51PM]
A black armoured military officer stood at the central podium in the large briefing room that was built around the small stage. The human adjusted his black officer hat over his helmet before he folded his hands together on the podium as the four aliens he had recruited earlier sat in the closet row in the otherwise empty room. "Black Stars, today you will be assigned your squad leader to lead you on future operations." The human announced.
"It's about time." A platypus-like alien spoke out who was in his green military fatigues.
"Yes, Mr. Flat Tail, what is it?"
The brown furred alien stretched out his legs before he answered, "Any reason you didn't bother to assign us our squad lead at the very start?"
"Captain Highcastle...had just finished his a medical examination both physically, and mentally." The officer answered before he nodded for the squad to open the brown folders that contained all the information on their team leader. "Mr. Highcastle fought in the war against the Forces of Khaos, the initial war against the Draconian Kingdom and the Great Infinite War twenty years ago. He was also the prime candidate to be the next Justicar, the ever living war hero of VALOR."
The short pink furred kangaroo-esque alien raised her small hand up to show that she had a question. The officer unfolded his gloved hands and gestured towards her for the young alien to speak up. "If he was the first in line to be the Justicar then what happened? Arjun Fiaz was always the hero I grew up to know." Althea spoke out.
"You're correct Ms. Harth but it was later found a special gene was required to use the Justicar power armour, one High castle did not possess allowing for Arjun to take his place." He answered. The alien that sat beside Althea had a smug around her scaly face; the velociraptor-like alien had an unlit cigarette in her teeth as her right claw played with the lighter by turning it off and on that set the short pink creature on edge. "If I was him I would be pissed off that some runt had replaced me." Var'Setta commented.
"Captain Highcastle has...expressed his dislike for the current Justicar but he has continued to serve in the VALOR military on the frontlines of every major offensive including the final assault on Dark Spire which was the head quarters of a very extremist cult that worshipped a deity known as the Void God. Although the Justicar was reported to have defeated the Void God it was High castle that still had to destroy Dark Spire..."
[[Twenty Years ago...] The Shadow Core; Dark Spire. West Tower, Year 3,568 A.D, November 27th, 7:51AM]
Wintro Highcastle's heads up display flickered and flashed as he heard the screams and agony of countless marine teams that were being horribly ripped apart by the unholy creations that the cultists were known for creating.
"All first company squads check in!" ordered Wintro over the communication channel.
"Raven squad is proceeding towards our target." reported a sergeant that was incredibly tired.
"Fire Team Charlie is in bad shape, we got three down and one wounded, we're not going to last much longer like this!"
"Bravo Team here...we lost contact with Cobra squad, were on route to their last position to retrieve the nuke and complete their mission, over."
Wintro looked around his surroundings, the only light source was a red strobe light that briefly illuminated the rusted grate floors and the blood caked walls that looked like it could only exist in some kind of psychotic nightmare. "We don't have time for delays marines we are outnumbered and outgunned so complete your objectives. We must destroy Dark Spire." Wintro ordered who was quickly answered by several acknowledgements to his order.
The human captain shouldered his rifle before he continued down the flashing gore filled hall way, checking any dark corners the hell spawned monsters could jump out of and slash out his throat. He checked his ammo counter that was shown in the bottom portion of his helmet's HUD, "Two clips for my rifle, one clip for my sidearm...at least swords don't need reloading." Wintro muttered to himself when he saw his dual-katana icon was reporting to be at full integrity and ready to be used.
Wintro turned a corner sharply to find several VALOR marines completely dismembered and strewn across the entire hallway in a bloody mess of flesh and armour. His suit picked up the flat lined life signs of the marines when suddenly his HUD began to flash warning signs of enemy targets coming from behind.
The captain turned around to see several lizard folk and human children in their torn clothing. Their eyes were soulless and their hands were bloodied and scarred. The warped creature at the front of the mob was a human boy that could not have been more than sixteen years old screeched in a way that was not possibly for any normal creature to sound, the ear popping war cry sent the others into a blood frenzy causing the whole gang to start rushing towards the lone human.
The captain's rifle began to flash as he held down the trigger feeling the heavy recoil against his shoulder as his helmet locked onto target after target as each of the rampaging undead children were gun downed one by one. As Wintro finished off one lizard folk child that looked like to be a mere hatchling, one of the many human undead kids leaped from the pack onto the captain's chest where it began screeching wildly like a mad animal.
Wintro grabbed the warped child by the neck and saw by looking into its anger filled eyes that the cult had taken any form of humanity from this otherwise innocent boy, the undead child still hissed and growled before the captain ended the child's suffering by snapping its neck with the same grip he held it by.
"Bravo team here, we found Cobra squad...I think I'm going to be sick."
Wintro checked the ammo counter and reloaded his last full magazine into his assault rifle before he answered the mentally fatigue sergeant. "Do you have the nuke?"
"Yea...yeah it's here, proceeding to the objective marker now, over"
Captain High castle took a deep breath to centre him self so he could continue down the halls of Dark Spire trying to drone out the freighting screams of the ghoulish nightmares that roamed the corridors. His boots clinked against the rusted grate flooring that echoed through the hallway that only stopped when Wintro had to check every corner he came across.
"Fire Team Charlie here, Captain how far are you away from us? We need to get out of here and something large is coming up on the radar..."
Wintro quickly turned another corner checking any dark spots that a creature could be lurking in with his rifle. "Just stay there, I'm almost at your position."
"Better hurry captain, it's getting clos-"The marine answered when his voice was quickly caught off by a terrible crash and a flurry of gun shots. "The hell is that! Open fire! Open fire!"
"Marines report!" Wintro ordered.
A terrible inhuman roar was the first to answer the captain over the communication channel before the sergeant could form any words, "We need fire support now! Jesus Christ, what the hell is that thing!?"
Wintro knew time was of the essence so he quickly placed his two handed rifle onto his power pack that locked in place from the powerful magnets and quickly sprinted down the hallway muttering under his breath that the incompetence of others would be the death of him.
Highcastle turned around the final corner where he found the squad was battling against a hellish monstrosity. The few remaining marines took cover behind the only large riot shield the front marine carried with him but unfortunately it was not enough to stop the relentless fire power that the patchwork like monster put out. The gunner class cult monster was hunched over from a very large chain gun that was attached to its backside along from having its entire forearms replace with huge machine guns. Its entire backside was covered in wrapped linen bandages and its front was fortified in heavy metal plating.
The gunner cult monsters fore arm machine guns turned a bright red from the overheating of the amount of rounds it had just fired so rapidly that turned the rest of the VALOR marines into bloody chunks. With a low pitched growl the massive undead lifted its arms into the air to cool off as Wintro immediately sprinted over the remains of Fire Team Charlie.
Captain Highcastle leaped into the air as the cult monster sprayed countless rounds at the nimble marine but all were quickly evaded when he landed behind the undead and held the trigger down to expend half of his clip into the monster's unprotected backside. The cult monster sluggishly turned around with its left arm to try and knock the captain to the ground but was quickly ducked by the human marine, Wintro rolled to the right to avoid another brutal attack as the cult monster smashed his previous location with both of its massive forearms.
Wintro held his rifle tightly as he bludgeoned the side of the head of the cult monster causing the massive undead to fumble. He took the moment of opportunity to slide over the cult monster's wounded backside where the captain quickly expended the rest of his ammunition into the undead that finally caused the tumour covered monstrosity to finally fall over and die.
"Bravo team here, we planted our nuke, proceeding to the extraction point...time to get the fuck out of here." The sergeant reported.
Wintro walked over to the unrecognizable remains of the marines and scavenged their corpses for spare clips that hopefully weren't also ripped apart, "Raven squad, how's it looking on your end?" he asked.
"We have planted our nuke and are almost at the extraction point; we will hold the zone until all squads arrive here."
Wintro placed several undamaged clips into his pockets on his belt before attaching his rifle back on his backside, "I'll be there shortly marines. Remember, no heroics."
"Copy that, Bravo team out"
"Raven squad is on the move, over"
Captain Highcastle entered a service lift that would take him to the top of the central tower in Dark Spire. The small open topped elevator was fast to accelerate to take the marine captain up to the very top of the cult's head quarters where he could retrieve the information he needed for his mission.
Wintro pulled his side arm from his holster on his thigh and treaded lightly into the top floor the lift had stopped at. With both of his hands gripped around the handgun the captain peered into the next room where he saw that a very large draconian was talking to three holographic projections.
"The Void God has a plan for the young Justicar, yes he does!" The giant half lizard folk reassured to the three superiors in front of him.
Captain Highcastle kept close to the shadows of the service elevator and only peered in when he heard the voice of the massive green scaled humanoid reptile. The marine did his best to get a good look at whatever the Draconian was talking too but if he leaned any farther in it would have compromised his location.
"The Shadow Prophet did not have our forces prepare for countless generations for this moment for us to wait on the side lines!" the middle hologram shouted.
"Yes, yes! But oh great ones the Void God had gave specific orders for the Justicar to reach him and our own forces here are more than capable of handling the heretic's army." The half lizard folk answered whose blood stained lab coat was far too small for his torso.
"Now Khraven..." The left most hologram spoke as she turned to face the middle one, "...Malero here has always been one of the Shadow Prophet's most aspiring children, it is with him that he has been able to create our God's most fearsome servants and taught so many followers the way of necromancy."
Wintro quickly hid behind the half opened door when the giant half lizard folk turned around as if the mad doctor had smelled something.
"What is it child?" The left most hologram asked.
"Nothing... It was nothing of interest." Malero answered before turning back. "Now oh great ones of the Dark Council, please inform the great Shadow Prophet that everything is going according to plan. I still have to give the Justicar a proper greeting with my newest...experiment." The mad doctor proceeded to let out a deranged laugh.
"Just remember Malero, the Shadow Prophet does not stomach failure!" Khraven threatened before all three of the holograms faded away.
Wintro watched Malero stretch out his very large wings before the draconian walked off with his head twitching and muttering insane gibberish under his breath, "Dark council eh?" Wintro whispered to himself before he slowly walked into the room before he quickly bolted to the large hellish computer. The captain opened a small device that was located on his right wrist guard where he began typing in commands to download as much information from the cult's main computer as possible.
"Captain! Where in the bloody hell are you!? We are taking heavy fire at the extraction point!" the sergeant of Raven squad yelled out before the background carnage easily overpowered his voice.
"Just hold your position marines, do not let these zealots gain an inch of ground!" Wintro barked.
"Copy that, its going to be a cold day in hell before we let these freaks take the LZ, over." the stern sergeant answered.

A flurry of shots sent a cultist flying backwards from the force of the impact that ripped off most of the being's upper body. The blue and white marines of VALOR contrasted the ravenous aliens that wore elaborate purple robes and hoods that masked expressions who had most of their bodies replaced with cybernetic enhancements that disfigured their faces and gave their once normal clear voices a very mechanical and soulless tone.
"This is for what you mechanical bastards did to my family!" one bold marine yelled from cover as he took out a live grenade and threw it at the feet of a gunner cult monster who was too dumb to realize what it was. The grenade detonated sending the massive undead in all directions at once, but with the use of powerful dark magic one of the nearby cultists struck the remains of the gunner with his staff allowing for the entire beast to regenerate completely.
Wintro entered the battlefield from a service lift. The few remaining marine teams from his regiment were quickly losing ground to the unrelenting horde of cultists and their horrific creations that made no effort to take cover as they rushed the position of the entrenched VALOR forces. Highcastle watched a VALOR marine took aim with a rather large rocket launcher before a plasma bolt from a cultist's arm grafted rifle struck the marine in the chest knocking the wind out of him. Marines were being pushed behind cover from the overwhelming fire power of the three cult monster gunners that were pinning down the entire VALOR force with their powerful array of high powered rounds and rockets.
The docking ramp of one of the larger VALOR drop ships opened up from the middle of its belly allowing for a powerful four legged mech to slowly crawl onto the battlefield. The automated machine was about twice as large as a marine and represented the colors of VALOR on its protective heavy plating. The mech immediately started to target the gunners with its own impressive arsenal. One by one the gunners fell to the lone mech that walked over the makeshift barricade its allies had set up, by the time the walker had to reload its weapons the cult force was already in full retreat and Wintro just made it down to the ground level.
"Thank god you made it, sir!" The nearest squad leader said thankfully as he walked towards the captain, "Command has ordered a full evacuation now that we are going to blow this place to hell and back."
Wintro nodded as he walked with the sergeant who wore the standard blue and white power armour that all VALOR marines wore. "The sooner we leave this place the better, I had enough of these zealots to last me eight lifetimes."
The middle drop ship exploded in a bright orange fire ball that threatened to consume the entire hanger bay. Wintro was knocked flat on his back from the force of the blast and saw his HUD was trying to get him to look at the source of the attack. The captain couldn't understand anything the marines around him were yelling about in his dazed state, he saw powerful energy blasts that tore apart the drop ships that were all lined up perfectly only leaving a single one intact. He got up as he struggled to keep his rifle in both hands and turned around.
Captain Highcastle found himself looking up at an enormous alien walker; the massive machine easily reached the very top of the large hanger bay and dwarfed the marines substantially. The humanoid shaped walker had huge lanky arms that reached to the floor with massive claws that seemed like its thin arms couldn't lift such huge hands, a massive shoulder cannon was mounted on its left side of where a head should have been and on its chest was a glowing red sphere that must worked as the walker's sight. Its legs were much like its arms, long and thin with huge elephant looking feet that could crush a tank easily. Wintro knew what this machine was; it was an Infinite drone.
The Infinite drone fired a continuous barrage of laser fire from its wrist mounted cannons that sent marines flying in all directions with no where to take cover against such a powerful target. "Marines we have trained for targets such as this!" Wintro shouted as he watched the drone march into the middle of the hangar bay with its lanky squid like legs. "Its armour plating is rated for star ship hulls which means only heavy ordnance will bring it down!"
The drone shook when a cluster of grenades impacted its left leg and when a salvo of rockets from several marines hit the same joint. The machine shrugged the blow like nothing and began to charge up its primary shoulder cannon that intensified with dark matter energy. Highcastle pointed his right wrist at the drone's cannon and fired a tiny powerful cable that stuck to the massive gun allowing for the captain to zoom into the air and land on top of the moving drone. The shoulder cannon crackled with dark energy as the anti-matter cannon would soon discharge an unstable black hole to swallow up everything but itself in the hanger bay; Wintro pulled the pin from his last grenade and shoved the live explosive down the barrel of the cannon.
Using the same wrist hook as he had before Wintro flew down to the last remaining drop ship when the drone's cannon exploded rendering it useless. "Take it down, take it down!" yelled one of the squad leaders as his team fired another salvo of rockets into its legs causing the already disoriented walker to fumble. "Reload!" he ordered soon after. The drone tried to shield its central glowing optic when the lanky walker tripped over on itself letting the massive machine to fall backwards. The shockwave from the impact knocked over the few surviving marines but they had a far easier time of getting back to their feet than the lanky drone that could not even get a footing.
"Quickly, everyone into the drop ship!" ordered Wintro but marines had already started to rush past him when he had given the command. The captain stood on the loading ramp with one hand on his rifle's grip as the sleek drop ship began to take off just as the drone flipped over on its front and slowly lifted itself back up onto its huge feet. The walker began firing its powerful wrist cannons at the retreating drop ship in a flurry of green plasma bolts that streaked radiation behind each round. Even though the drop ship was soon clear of the cult's fortress the drone still fired off in the distance.

Draco flexed his hand in his newly upgraded power armour that was simply not a repainted version on the standard marine armour all grunts wore. The new Black Star battle armour was certainly more bulky than what he was trained to wear originally but despite its heavy look he felt even faster and stronger than ever before, he even felt like running entire laps around the giant of a star ship. With both of his heavily armoured hands on his freighting looking helmet that must have been designed to inspire fear into his enemies. Draco carried the yellow and black helmet under his left arm as he watched the rest of the members of the Black Star team suit up as well.
The pink and harmless looking creature known as Althea made a tiny cough before she lifted her helmet onto her shoulders with both hands. She wagged her previously large tail across the floor that was slimmed down from the tight fitting mesh underlay that also covered her overweight body. The Macrial toyed with the handgun she held in her tight grip around the stock, and as she looked at the gun puzzled wondering why it was jammed the squad's marksmen walked over who with a disappointed look on her face snatched the pistol from Althea's timid hands. The raptor like creature had her large sniper rifle attached to her backside along with her helmet clipped to her left thigh. Var'Setta smacked Althea's jammed handgun so hard it caused the stocky creature to jump from being startled. The red scaled raptor rolled her eyes and tossed the pistol back too her casually that she had to catch with both hands.
Draco turned to the much more imposing heavy gunner of the squad who wielded and equally large high powered chain gun. The solemn beast wore the heaviest power armour out of the entire team that made him into a walking tank with his heavy plated claws made so he was not only lethal at range but also devastating in close quarters with the razor sharp tips.
The entire squad turned their attention to the automatic door that quickly opened to reveal both Charles Wareman who wore his tradition black VALOR marine body armour with his just as dark trench coat along with the similar color officer's cap that covered the top of his helmet and part of his red color eye glass piece. He kept his right hand was on his dress sword that was clipped to his waist as he walked into the armoury in strides. Along side the human was the Black Star's captain himself who was already in full power armour with his helmet under his right arm. Captain Highcastle had a rough beard that he scratched at mildly that matched the same brown color hair that was shaved in the standard cut all VALOR marines had. His heavy gaze fell onto the squad he was assigned to lead and already began taking mental notes on each of the marines that stood at attention.
Wintro Highcastle joined Charles' side and took a heavy sigh, "You must be joking, what in the hells am I even looking at?" the captain asked rhetorically.
Charles coughed to clear his throat, "I can assure you Mr. Highcastle that this is the best possible squad we can put together."
"Charles, I would go into the royal hatchery on Drakos and personally crush an egg right in front of the Queen Matriarch herself if you asked me. So I trust you and the High General that this is the best VALOR has to offer but I mean you except me to lead; a private, a civilian, a pirate, and some kind of Tool Age beast..."
Garok snorted when he heard the human's snide comment and let out a loud growl that caused the captain to turn and face the massive grey furred shaman, "I have ripped the spines of out more draconian filth than you had birthdays pink one." He smirked giving him an open ended threat.
"Is that so?" Wintro Highcastle asked as he looked the Canerras High Shaman up and down.
"I'm only here as an ambassador for my people and for your clan to assist my own against the Draconians when the time comes. So watch your tone against me or I'll happily have yours added to my collection." Garok Earth blood answered without breaking eye contact.
Wintro nodded with a confident smile on his face knowing that the muscle bound, humanoid badger-like creature would do just fine. The captain took his place by Charles Wareman's side so he could see the entire team in one view.
"Black Stars, I only have one rule; you follow my orders to the letter or you will die. I know you will die because I will shoot you myself. I will not be able to save all of you, some of you will die... but if we all work together we will succeed." The captain said out in a loud clear voice.
Captain Highcastle watched as his squad nodded in unison before he turned to Officer Charles who finished adjusting his officer's cap over his helmet with both hands.
"I'll inform the President that the Black Stars are at full combat strength." Charles Wareman nodded before saluting the team and walking off.
Captain Wintro Highcastle looked back to the Black Star squad and sighed. He had picked the wrong day to give up smoking.
