Chapter 5 - Understanding

Red's POV -

I awoke to the sound of voices, two people having a conversation and it sounded like they were right in front of me. I opened my eyes slowly, looking to see Chris sitting in front of me, his back facing me. Damon was sitting at the same tree he was when he fell asleep. I couldn't really make out what they were saying because they were keeping quiet, probably to let me sleep. I rolled on my side and purposely bumped into Chris, who stopped talking and looked down at me as I pretended to still be asleep. I felt a hand on my shoulder, rubbing softly as it moved to my cheek, repeating the same action. He was so nice and caring, but I couldn't figure out why he insisted on touching me in such a manner. I know he agreed to stop his advances until I figured out who I was and got my memories back, but didn't this count as an advance. I suppose not since he thought I was asleep. I breathed deeply and snuggled closer, actually sort of in need of his warmth. I opened my eyes and looked up at him, he had that non stop gentle smile of his, his bright blue eyes so calming and yet so mesmerizing.

"Good morning, sleep well?" He said as his hand left my cheek instantly.

"Great." I replied with a sleepy smile.

He chuckled and gave a glance at Damon, who was watching us with a grin on his face. I ignored the black Anthro and focused on Chris, who for some reason I wanted to just curl up on and fall back asleep, and honestly, I don't think he'd mind. I sat up fully and rubbed my eyes, giving a second stare at my red scaled, sharp clawed hands before regarding Damon.

"Have fun sleeping on a tree? I bet you're as happy as a baby monkey to be free."

Damon grinned widely and laughed.

"Your damn right, this forest sure as hell beats that damn room any day. Chris and I were just going over what we

were gonna do today. We thought it would be best to stick to last night's plan, find a place to stay."

I gave him a long look before opening my mouth again.

"You sound like you're a part of the group, you intend on staying? I thought you'd want to run off and go back where you used to live?"

He laughed and pointed his clawed finger at me casually.

"I'm in the same boat as you kid, I can't go back home looking like this, I'd be shot, or even worse, taken back to that damn facility. I think I'll just stick with you for awhile until I think of a game plan."

I gave a small nod and looked down at the ground, feeling the cold grass rubbing against my feet as I moved them back and forth slightly. I heard a zipping sound and looked up to see Damon holding an entire outfit to me.

"Here, Blue Eyes got dressed, so should you, it's freezing out here."

I took the clothes hesitantly. It wasn't just a shirt and pants. It was socks and a pair of large 14 shoes that were white and black. He probably got it from that bag he grabbed at the facility, they probably only allowed certain successful Anthros who were obedient to wear full clothing, or even shoes for that matter. I was worried as I got dressed that the shoes would tear from my clawed toes, but my claws only just rubbed against the tip of the shoe, which meant it wouldn't do any harm. I had a pair of skinny faded jeans (which showed off my ass) and an extra large blue shirt that hugged my muscled chest. Although it was an extra large, it looked to be a small. I looked over to see that Chris was dressed in baggy jeans and a white t shirt that really hugged his body.

When I finished dressing and putting on the shoes I did a short walk, noticing how the fabric of the jeans rubbed against my thighs and ass. I turned and looked at my shoes before walking again, trying to get used to the feel of them. I noticed Chris was staring with a smile on his face. I gave him a look and he chuckled.

"You look nice. Your scale color gives the clothes a very nice touch."

I smiled and looked away, feeling my face heat up a bit.

"Thanks..."

He grinned and laughed as I followed him. We started searching for a place to stay, although we had no idea where we were going, we still tried. Damon helped as well, splitting up from us to cover more ground as we searched. By the time I was tired of walking it had been over 6 hours of non stop walking and climbing over hills or sliding down them. I groaned loudly and sat down on the ground, finally being able to rest as Chris sat beside me, his head in his hands.

"We've searched all day practically. It'll be dark in an hour or two, maybe three. Maybe we should just try again tomorrow, although I doubt it will do us any good, we've searched this whole freakin' forest!"

I gave a small nod and swallowed, my throat felt dry and scratchy. I looked around, wondering where Damon was at, probably resting just like me and Chris I thought. I took a glance over at him, he was leaning back against a tree, lazily staring at me with his eyes half closed, and he looked kind of dazed.

"Chris...you alright, you look dazed?"

He opened his eyes fully instantly and gave me a confused look.

"Huh, I'm sorry what? I was thinking."

I gave a small nod and continued with what I originally was going to say.

"Chris...what do you think of Damon? Do you trust him I mean, I'm just saying, I'm just being cautious is all."

He gave me a small smile, his eyes showing emotion that I doubt words could ever describe. I didn't understand why he looked at me that way. In fact I didn't think I ever would.

"Well, honestly no. I mean yeah he's nice and all, but he's new to the group and it doesn't hurt to be cautious, I'm just looking out for you Red, that's all."

I nodded and continued.

"Do you think it's safe to bring him along, I mean shouldn't we at least take away his handgun?"

Chris gave a sharp shake of his head and replied quickly.

"No, we need him to like us, not be annoyed or angry with us. In order to gain his trust we have to trust him. I'm willing to let him follow us where we go, but if anything happens, I won't hesitate to take him down, but like I said, if were nice to him, he won't pull anything. Hopefully..."

I nodded and looked over my shoulder as I noticed the sound of grass being stepped on.

"Hey guys, come here! I found something!"

I stood and turned, seeing Damon standing a couple dozen yards away, breathing heavily. Chris stood next to me and we followed Damon, his trail hard to keep up with as he moved so quickly. When he stopped we looked up to where he was pointing only to gasp in amazement at what we saw. Over a small slope was a large field, and in the middle of the field was a large house that was two stories, and from this distance it looked to be in good shape. I laughed out loud as I looked at Chris, who was staring ta me with a grin on his face. We rushed over the slope and to the front of the house, stopping as Damon checked it before entering as he announced it was empty.

The foyer was amazing, the floors were hardwood and the walls were a creamy color, giving it a pretty look. The place was spotless and the furniture looked to be almost new and even the electricity and plumbing worked! On the window of the front door was a note saying that all furniture was to be packed and sold by the people who first sold the house, which probably was some company. It explained why the furniture was here and everything looked to be new. The people of the house must have moved only a short while ago for the house to be in the condition it was in. I looked into the kitchen to see Damon going through the cabinets, and from where I was standing, there was food in them. Apparently the people had to have only moved out a day or so before we arrived.

I heard footsteps on the stairs and looked to see Chris descending them with a grin as he walked over to me.

"This place is great! There is water, electricity, plumbing, everything! There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms, not even mentioning the lounging room! This furniture must have been expensive. These people must have been rich! I mean this house has everything we need! It's perfect!"

I grinned and nodded. Overjoyed we finally didn't have to sleep in the forest, and happy we had a place to stay where nobody would come and find us. Chris turned and walked into the kitchen and started talking to Damon. I followed but stopped as my head suddenly began hurting and a sharp pain went through me, making me fall to the ground. Everything went white, all I could see was white, but then images began to appear.

The same guy...his smile...so comforting...

A woman...holding a plate of freshly baked cookies...she was beautiful...

The guy again...his black hair...his smile...laughing...hugging...touching...

A bedroom...him above me...softness below me...his body exposed...

House...white walls...beautiful front yard...tan porch...

A town...general stores and homes...

Him again, his hand with mine...my skin normal...him laughing, his face coming closer...a tingly feeling on my lips...

I gave a sharp gasp as my vision returned. I was staring at Chris, his blue eyes wide and filled with worry.

"...Red, Red, wake up. Come on wake up, wake up Red!"

I gulped air as if I was drowning as I focused on his eyes, on the feeling of his hands as he held me, the slight pain of his claws as he gripped me tightly. I looked over to see Damon, his face calm as he leaned against the wall casually, staring at me. I slowly leaned up and coughed, feeling Chris's worried gaze fixed on me.

"I'm ok..." I coughed out.

He gave a small nod but still stared at me, and then he looked up at Damon and growled.

"Help me get him to the couch!"

Damon nodded and practically hoisted me up while Chris guided me along until they layed me on the soft couch, placing a pillow beneath my head. Chris sat down on the floor next to me, his hand resting on my forearm as he continued to stare at me with those worried eyes of his.

"Are you sure your alright, you just suddenly collapsed, you hit the floor hard."

I gave a small nod and rubbed the side of my face, it did kind of hurt I guess, but it wasn't anything to mention.

"I'm perfectly fine, don't worry. But I guess I could use an ice pack, my head is killing me."

Chris gave a quick nod before rushing into the kitchen, disappearing from view, leaving me alone with Damon.

"So...you have them often?" He said while staring at me without blinking.

I gave him a weird look and replied.

"What?"

"I said...do you have them often? Flashes of your past life...before you were turned into a hybrid. I get them too, although mine don't make me collapse, what all did you see, it must have been intense on you."

I looked down and gripped my shirt tightly, trying to get past my head hurting to get the details clearly.

"I remember seeing flashes...like pictures. There was a guy...he kept appearing in a lot of them...and he was smiling...and we were...holding hands...and I think he....I think he even kissed me....and I think he even kissed me...And there was this woman who had cookies....she looks so friendly....I think I was sitting somewhere....oh and this house...it was white with a tan porch....then that guy appeared again...but he was....on top of me...naked...I was on....this bed....I seen this town....it had stores and stuff...it was like I was in the middle of the road....or walking down the sidewalk..."

He gave a chuckle and nodded, walking over to sit in one of the recliners as he continued to stare at me.

"Yep, those are definitely memories...kid you gotta be careful, sometimes they will come suddenly...sometimes they won't stop...you think they'll never end. And the bad thing is, is that the shock it gives on your nervous system and your body, it can kill you...I have them too, all though they've only been small flashes at a time...but I haven't seen anybody have any flashes as intense as yours..."

I stared at him but gasped as the thought occurred to me.

"But if I have them, then why does Chris act so clueless...he has to know what's happening to me...right?"

He looked towards the kitchen the back at me, a sigh escaping him.

"Well kid, he may not even have them...I mean yeah he must have had at least some to be able to remember his name, but they were probably only just small flickers...I doubt he can piece it together yet. And honestly, I think it's best to not worry him...he's really protective of you after all, but don't worry, you'll be fine. Just stick close to us and you won't go through them alone. If you are alone and that happens, you may not be able to stop the flashes like Chris was able too when he kept shaking you and calling your name."

I nodded and slid down on the couch, laying down completely while I waited for the ice pack. A few seconds later

Chris walked back in and handed me the cold bag. I put it to my head and sighed, feeling its coldness helping already. Chris smiled and placed a hand on my shoulder, comforting me as I relaxed into the couch, and soon everything became distant as I silently fell asleep as I thought of the flashes I had, and when I might have them next.
