Grounded: Ch. 3
Um, this is part 2? Still not quite chronological yet. Tell me what you think.
.....
"Psst."
Holly sat up quickly, the remnants of a dream quickly fading from behind her eyelids. Psst? What sort of a way was that to wake someone up? "Varr...? Is that you?"
"Pssssstttt," replied the unknown voice persistently.
Holly rolled her eyes, then looked around. Seeing nothing but palm trees and sand, she stood up, shaking a few loose grains of the stuff from her hair and her wings.
"Come on, Varr... really?"
"PSSSSTTTT!!!!!"
Holly looked around. As far as dumb pranks went - and this was surely a dumb prank; what else could it be? - it was not one of the better ones she had seen. Or heard, as the case may be. She sighed and rolled her eyes again.
"Come on out, Varr."
She walked over to the tree that the voice seemed to be coming from, and saw a black feather. Funny, she thought. I could've sworn his wings were grey last night. Ah, well. Must have been the light. Now - here's an opportunity. She grinned. His back was to her. He was obviously watching their little makeshift camp, waiting for her to come back into view so he could scare her. This was perfect.
She sneaked closer to the tree, scaling it with her back to it, making absolutely no sound as she moved in a rough circle, closer, closer...
She grabbed his wingtip.
"HEY!" An extremely startled bird jumped from behind the tree. "Wot you think you're doin'? Scarin' an honest bird such as m'self..."
Holly stared. "Oh, I'm sorry, um, I thought, I thought you were someone else-"
"Too right! Now, who the hell is 'Varr' anyway?"
"He's, um, well, um... well..."
"Your vocabulary astounds me. You could be a great author, you know. So articulate!" He preened, ruffling his feathers at her mockingly.
Holly reddened. She wasn't used to being made fun of, certainly not by a bird, and never by a bird she had never even met before. "What do you want from me? What- why- who are you?"
"And so full of questions! Per'aps a philosopher as well?"
Holly groaned. "Fine. Don't answer, then."
She turned her back on the bird, looking for Varr. Where on earth could he have gone, anyway? It wasn't as if he had anywhere to be...
"If you're lookin' for your boyfriend, I saw 'im getting water an' such a few meters... that-a-way." The unwelcome bird pointed a feather in the general direction of inland, making a sweeping motion so Holly couldn't tell exactly which way 'that-a-way' was. She rolled her eyes.
"He is not my boyfriend." Yet, she added to herself. He isn't yet, but I really, really want him to be.
The bird hopped awkwardly to her side. "Suit yourself, mate. But, between you and me, I'd say that he might as well be, eh?" He poked her conspiratorially. "After you two made it last night, I should think that - HEY!"
Holly shoved him to the side unceremoniously and began walking inland. "Stupid bird..." she muttered under her breath.
"I heard that."
"I don't care."
The bird dusted and preened itself until it felt suitably clean, then flapped its wings once or twice and quickly covered the three meters' distance Holly had covered walking. It alighted on her shoulder, prompting a yelp and a groan from the unfortunate Angel.
"What do you want?" She gave the bird the nastiest look she could possibly convince her face to display.
"Well," the bird began, "for starters, you could tell me what you and you're, erm, not-boyfriend are doing on my beach."
Holly sighed. "If you can eavesdrop on other people's business, surely you could have figured that one out yourself."
The bird smirked. "Hardly. All I know is, I'm alone, storm hits, I fly to my perch, tuck my head under my wing, get some shut-eye, and next morning, wham! Here's two pretty little angels having sex on my beach. I feel like I have a right to know, don't you?"
Holly glared at him. "You don't know me."
"And you don't know me. Would it make you fly away faster if I told you my name? It's Rupert. There you go. Now, go on! Go fly away..."
