The wispy moonlight shown in through a window, down into the apartment room, and directly onto the inhabitant's bed. A young ferret recklessly tossed-and-turned in his sleep troubled by terrible, heart-wrenching dreams. Tryst Kalis, the owner of the room jolted awake, breathing heavily. He listed a paw gently up to his unclothed chest. He could feel his heart hammer and race aggressively.
How many more night will I wake up like this. How much longer will I be troubled by Cooper's disappearance? Tryst rested his head in both paws as his long, lithe legs dropped over the side of the bed, dragging the cover with them, exposing his naked body. Slowly he raised his head up towards the one window. The moon lay high in the sky, shiningly perfectly onto the city below. Just once would this beautiful city be safe for once. Tryst mentally prayed, as he would do every day wishing for an opportunity to look through his missing friend's case.
The ring-tailed lemur, haunting his dreams on a nearly day-to-day basis, vanished from Broken Branch roughly a year back. That day forth, Tryst scoured any newspapers and online articles containing anything to involve a ring-tail. In the ferret's mind he would rather find about his friend being arrested than to discover Copper had truly passed away, which most people already believed. As much as he was unlikely to admit it, Tryst cared a great deal about Cooper; maybe enough to call it love. The reason for this constantly troubled the ferret. No matter what Cooper always seemed to end up in jail. Being a cop and the more positive one, Tryst would find ways to bail his friend out of the slammers. Cooper of course never really learned from any of these trips to jail and would end up back inside one within less than a month.
The ferret's mind came back to focus as a glass jar shattered out in the hall. Instinct quickly took control and the cop pulled his handgun out of his dresser drawer. Hoping out of his bed he took a quick glance down at the street before turning his attention towards the door to his apartment. Loud stumbling steps magnified as whoever neared his door. Tryst opened his closet door and hid behind it, his gun ready at hand.
The door to the room burst open, followed by two heavy sets of paws. The two stumbled drunkardly around the room bumping into the ferret's things. "Jeff, I ... I don't think this... this is our room," A young male hiccupped loudly from the other side of the door.
Relief flooded over Tryst. Lowering his gun to his hip, the ferret peered around the door looking over the two intruders. In the main of his room stood a young male lion, about six feet tall, and a slightly older badger, standing a few inches below his companion. Releasing a soft sigh, Tryst made his presence know walking out from behind the door. "Do you two guys need help finding your room?"
The two men, upon seeing the naked ferret's sheath and hanging balls, bursted out into hysterical laughter. The lion was laughing so hard that he almost fell over, only kept up by his friend's body.
Rolling his eyes at the drunkard's actions, the ferret turned around to grab a pair of shorts from his dresser. Just as he pulled the shorts out, he heard two gun shots and his window shattering. Tryst's body went rigged with shock and fear. Slowly he turned around to see the two other males on the ground. Witnessing them, the cop dashed over to them. Kneeling down, Tryst checked both for pulses, but as he searched the badger for a pulse, he discovered a folded-up diece of paper with his name spelt out in large, legible letters. Finally feeling a steady pulse, Tryst picked up the note and walked over to the phone.
As he dialed up the hospital, the ferret unfolded and read the note silently to himself.
Dear Tryst,
_ It has been such a long time since we have seen each other. I'm sorry for never saying good-bye to you, but I had done something terrible a year ago. The rapist's death you were investigating a week before I disappeared was actually of my doing. My sister had called telling me she was raped and knew the man who had done it. I couldn't control my rage and anger at the time; leading me to taking his life. Since then, knowing I can't live a normal life yet, not with the possibility of getting caught; I've made a living of killing rapists and murders. I know you don't want to hear this, but you should know this darker side of me. I do hope for a day we can meet under pleasant conditions. - Love, Cooper St. Able_
The cop hardly read through half of the paper when the call finally came through. "There as been a shooting. My name is Officer Tryst Kalis of the Broken Branch police department. Two drunkards, who had mistaken my room for theirs, where shoot from across the street. Both are stable and there is not too much blood. Please sent an ambulance right away to apartment seventeen on Vines Cir."
Hours had passed before other members of the police arrived. Both of the boys had been wheeled away within an hour of the call and had been currently reported as critical condition. Tryst sat on his bed, his heart heavy with pain and shock while the two officer questioned him.
"Tryst, we need you to tell us everything you know. If this was meant for you, we have to do something," Officer Brehm questioned again placing a paw onto the ferret's unclothed leg.
The naked cop pushed the girl's paw off his leg while shaking his head. "I've told you. I haven't the slightest knowledge to what happened. Never once have I seen those two guys."
"Okay, Kalis. Sleep well and feel better."
The ferret watched and waited patience for the other officers to leave his room. With Brehm and the other three officers gone, Tryst pulled out the note and read it over again. Resting on his bed, his eyes darted over it, while tears slowly flowed from his eye.
