Chapter 22

Freedom

The next day Snow was all a glow running about the enclosure acting like a pup rolling about. Grey woke up blinking his eyes twisting an ear listening and laughed to himself rolling to his paws. He sat watching her and for the first time in many moons, smiling knowing that very soon his fellow cage mate would be free, and it warmed his soul. She was filed with life and vibrancy, something that he had not lost but hid away since being captured. He dug his claws into the ground and ran at her from the side catching her off guard taking her as she had taken a liking to doing onto him lately.

She saw him coming and for a moment played dumb letting him approach then skidded short so he would miss her . Snow then spun back around grasping Grey's tail in her jaws. "Hmmmm and what do you think you are up to Grey, trying to pounce me again are you?" He yipped stopping and turned looking to her with a low brow growling for a moment feeling a bit humiliated. "Well I guess there Is no taking you by surprise now Is there Snow?" She released his tail and sat with her head tilted to the side then twisted an ear hearing the cage gate open. Sarah walked in and both wolves padded side by side to her.

Sarah lowered herself and nuzzled Grey kissing his neck, he returned the gesture by licking her cheek. She growled playfully then spoke, "good morning my love did you two have fun last night?" The two wolves looked to one another and nodded then looked back to Sarah. "Well then there is but one thing left to do and that is to free you Snow. Today there will be a delivery I will get him to open the transfer cage and that's when you will have your chance. He won't be able to get cell phone reception up here and you will have time to run at least a few miles before anyone else will know what has happened." She nodded and stood padding to Sarah lowering her head in respect then raised her muzzle to her nose to nose with her blue eyes locked to Sarah's green orbs. "Thank you for all you have done for me Sarah, I am now a real wolf thanks to Grey teaching me, and I thank you for removing that tracking thing so that I may be free.

Sarah opened her arms and hugged Snow pulling the lupine to her and both shed tears in the moment. She released her then Snow turned to Grey padding to him slowly wagging her fluffy white tail. "And to you I owe all I know, before I was as you called me.....a dog. You showed me how to hunt, how to live in the wild and so much more. But above all you gave me your seed so that I may begin my own family and there is not another wolf's blood I want running through their veins. I owe you a debt Grey that I may never be able to repay but I will try in the future. You should not be locked in this place you know it and so does your mate. We only did the best we could with the situation brought upon us....but in a way I am glad it happened." For the split second Grey was taken back stripped of all that he was by her words. The proud grey wolf stood tall listening to her but his body language gave him away showing his softer side not normally seen by anyone.

Grey cleared his throat and spoke to Snow "My dear I too am happy I had the opportunity to meet you and am glad that even if I never get out of this place, in a way I shall live on. You are now a true wolf that can survive on your own." He kissed her on the nose and turned his head hiding a tear from them both watching it fall to the ground as part of him wanted to leave and be wild once again. But in his heart he knew where his place was, by Sarah's side no matter if that meant having to spend the rest of his days inside a cage of any sort.

The moment was broken by the familiar sound of the truck coming up to the camp. All three had become familiar with the broken down truck that made it's delivery once a week on the same day and ironically almost at the same time. A cloud of dust was seen as it rounded the turn and ground to a halt idling in it's typical rough way burbling as the driver climbed out from the cab. Sarah greeted him and the talked for a moment about the delivery gate not working. "Sorry but for some reason the latch on the gate is not working so you will need to bring it through the main door into the enclosure." His face went white for awhile knowing he would be in with the wolves and shook his head. "I ain't going in there with them damn wolves, maybe you do but that's your own neck not mine." "Trust me they won't hurt you they know you anyways you know they talk right?" The rather simple minded man pondered over her words for a minute then nodded. "Well alright but if they attack me you better call them off you got it?" Sarah nodded and the man began unloading the truck getting out the hand truck to bring the boxes in.

Sarah led him into the door turning her head looking to the two wolves speaking through mind to hold on waiting for him to become comfortable and make a few trips. Grey nodded to her and they did so mock pacing towards the back of the enclosure to make it look natural. On one trip the man stopped inside looking to Grey removing his hat and scratching his sweaty brow. "Well you say these darn dogs talk so lets hear it cause I got a Labrador at home that does nothing but piss on the carpet and I wanna make the sucker stop." Sarah laughed and looked to Grey calling him over to which both wolves approached making the man step back towards the door. "Don't worry they are harmless tame wolves they just look scary...... isn't that right Grey?"

This comment angered him even though he knew it was not her true words only those to fool the driver. He kept his composure resisting the want to growl and spoke to the man. "Yes Sarah is right we are tame wolves you need not fear us. As far as your dog goes I don't know bring it here I will show it who's boss." The driver's eyes went wide and he stammered back almost passing out as the wolf spoke to him through mind. "What the hell he is in my head how does he do that?" Sarah motioned her hand to Snow to come over and she slowly approached Sarah's side stopping tilting her head looking to the man. "Are you ok, maybe you need to sit down for a second." Again the man scrambled back as Snow spoke to him and he looked to Sarah with an even wilder wide eyed look. "Ok that's it what kinda joke you all trying to play on me here?" "There is no joke sir they are speaking to you and chose to talk to you. All animals can they just choose not to at least for the time being." She reached a hand down scratching behind Snow's ear giving her a playful tug making Snow growl and mouth back at her fingers.

The man stood brushing off his overalls and grabbed his hand truck to finish his job. "Well you keep them damn talking dogs away from me you got it?" He turned away from them and opened the door to go out. At that moment Sarah looked down to Snow who was already staring up at her with her blue eyes ready muscles tensed for the signal to which Sarah nodded and spoke. "I will miss you Snow." She said nothing in return only digging her claws to the ground and leaping to the door barking. The man nearly came out of his skin dropping the hand truck and ran out the gate leaving it open followed closely by Snow who once outside stopped turning looking to Grey. "Come on Grey now is you chance to leave this hell and be a real wolf once again."

Grey's mind turned thinking of the past, being a true wild wolf and alpha of his pack. For a split second he tensed ready to run then trotted to Sarah's side with the door still wide open licking her hand lovingly. "This is where I belong I have chosen my mate and where I want to be Snow. Run start your own pack make your own way please then your training will come full circle." Snow sighed not understanding in her simple way but nodded then turned and ran into the trees as the streak of white wolf disappeared Grey looked up to Sarah. "That was the hardest decision I have ever had to make even more so than when I was brought into this place. I did it because I love you Sarah.......this truly is where I want to be." She knelt down kissing him on the muzzle while the man was looking towards the white wolf running away. "I love you too Grey but if you wanted to go I would have understood. But I am honored your chose me as your mate as odd of a couple as we may be.

She stood and walked outside the gate running to the driver yelling. "What the hell are you doing get on the phone call the center get a search truck out her asap!!!!!" He grabbed his cell phone but as Sarah knew he had no reception and jumped into his truck to run down the hill where he could call in. "Told you them damn dogs were no good didn't I?" In a cloud of smoke he drove away down the hill and suddenly all was quiet once again......at least for awhile.
