Inner Dilemma | Part 7
#7 of Inner Dilemma
I finally got released from the hospital. Dr. Feldman gave me some Penicillin and some other pills that I had never heard of before. Before I left the room, one of the nurses redressed my cut with the stitches on my chest. It looked weird to me. It seemed like I was one of those dolls in "Chuckie." I wanted to check up on Mike to see how he was doing, but he couldn't have any visitors at that time. The nurse wheeled me out in a wheelchair because it was "hospital policy."
I got out of the last sliding doors when I realized that I had no way to get back to campus. That was when an old looking light blue sedan pulled up and its driver came out of the driver's side. It was the otter. I couldn't remember his name. It's something like Mr. Graham, no, that can't be right.
The otter walked up to me and helped me out of the chair. "I'll take you back."
I got into the passenger seat as the otter walked around to the driver's side and hoped in. He turned the ignition key and started up the car. The fans were on full blast and I felt like a leaf blower just blasted me.
"Sorry about that" the otter said with a hint of nervousness as he turned them down. It was then that I noticed that he has a brace on his wrist and he was still pretty bruised up under the fur. The otter put the car into drive and we rolled out of the parking lot.
"I'm Kyle by the way," the otter said as soon as they were on the road, "Kyle Grey."
"Allen Sampson" I answered.
"It's nice to finally meet you" Kyle said as he turned onto another street. I looked over at him while he drove. He had dark tan fur on the top of his head going down his back and a lighter tan under his muzzle. He had blue eyes and a fairly long tail that came to a point as it came off of the side of the seat.
We just sat there and the awkward silence was killing me. I had had enough silence in the hospital so I decided to strike up the conversation. "So Kyle, where are you from?"
"Here in this town. I've lived here for years," he answered.
That was a surprise to me. "Years huh. Didn't you want to get away from home? Personally, I wanted to get far away so that I felt that I had my own life."
Kyle smiled a bit, "Yeah I did too at first, but it's not bad. I know all of the best places around here and I never see my parents around except when I go to my house on the weekends."
"Every weekend?" I answered raising my eyebrow at him.
"Yeah, it seems weird, but my brother can't stand it when I'm not around and I miss him too during the week. Do you have a brother?"
I laughed to myself as I thought about Max. "Yeah, his names Max and he's about two years younger than me. From what my parents say, he loves being the big man in the house, besides my dad."
Kyle's eyes shot open, "That reminds me, my parents wanted me to ask you if you wanted to come over to my house tonight and have dinner with us. They really want to meat you because...well you know why."
"Sure, I'd love to."
"Good, because my mom said that I couldn't let 'no' be an answer," Kyle said as we went across an intersection. "Crap! I forgot to turn. Hold on."
I was about to ask what he should hold onto when Kyle jerked the wheel to the left and we turned suddenly. I hit the window with my side. Luckily I had my seatbelt on. Next thing I know, we're going to other way. And Kyle seemed like nothing happened. Even though this put some stress on my stitches, it was exhilarating and it made be laugh to myself. It was the first time I've laughed in a while.
A couple of minutes later, we turned into a suburban neighborhood. There were a bunch of two-story houses. They weren't fancy, but they still looked nice. We turned into a driveway and I got out of the car. Kyle and only got about halfway to the front door when it burst open and out flooded a smaller otter that I could only assume was Kyle's brother.
"Kyle!" he shouted as he nearly tackled Kyle.
"Hey there Cole," Kyle said as he hugged his brother. Once they let go of each other, Kyle said to Cole, "Cole, this is Allen."
Cole seemed a little shy at first so I took the initiative to stick out my paw and said, "It's nice to meet you."
Cole returned the handshake and seemed to loosen up a bit. Just then I heard someone say, "Kyle, is that you?"
All of us turned and saw Kyle's parents standing in the doorway. Kyle walked up to them and gave them each a hug as I stood behind him. His mother was a little shorter than me with similarly colored fur and hazel eyes and his father stood at like six feet, five or six inches with a lighter colored fur and brown eyes. Kyle's mother turned to me and beamed at me. "You must be Allen. It's so good to finally meet you. I'm Kyle's mother by the way," she shook my paw, "and this is Kyle's father," she motioned to the tall otter.
"Stanley Grey," he said giving my paw a very firm handshake. It kind of surprised me at first, but he didn't notice. "I'm glad you could come this evening. Now let's not continue standing out here, it's time to eat!" he said the last part with much enthusiasm.
We all made our way into the door. As I walked in, I observed the inside of the house, as would anyone else waling into someone's house for the first time. The place had a nice cozy feeling to it. There wasn't anything fancy around, but it looked nice. We made our way into the kitchen where the dining table was already set for dinner. We took our seats just as Mr. Grey came with plate of grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, green peas, gravy, and steamed vegetables. It all looked amazing. After eating hospital food, I was anxious to dig in, and dig in we did. Kyle and I talked about how classes were going, I told them about my family, they talked about what they did and I found out that Mr. Grey was doctor for the university's health center and for the football team. No one mentioned what happened in the alleyway even though it was on everybody's mind. No one wanted to burst that bubble during the meal. Once we finished eating, my stomach was about to explode. The entire meal was delicious. All I wanted to do was vegetate and digest without moving.
"Alright you kids, run along, we'll clean this up," Mrs. Grey said as she started collecting plates and putting them in the sink. Kyle and I stood up and Kyle led the way to the basement. Down there had a couple of couches, a fairly large television, and a foosball table. We each plopped down on the couch. Kyle flipped on the television and started to channel surf. We settled on watching some SportsCenter.
After we watched it with no particular interest, Kyle turned the television down and turned toward me and said, "I can take you back to your dorm room whenever you want to go, but if you want, you could spend the night over here."
I thought about this for a moment, I was having a nice time over here, and there was nothing back at the university that I really wanted to do. "Sure, I'll stay the night here."
Kyle smiled at this, "Great!"
Just then, Kyle got up and ran up the stairs. I had no idea what was going on, but I assumed he was going to get something. I was right when I saw him coming down the stairs with some drinks, a six-pack to be exact. He tossed me one and I caught it in my paw.
"Don't worry," Kyle said, "My parents have already gone to bed."
We sat there drinking for a bit when Kyle said, "So, after all that has happened, I want to get to know you and you get to know me."
I turned to him, "Alright."
Kyle continued, "It's a little embarrassing, but I don't have many friends. I know people and sometimes hang out with them, but I haven't had a true friend that I could open up to and hang out with regularly in a long time."
I put my arm around his shoulder; "Of course I'll be your friend. Why wouldn't I? I find it hard to believe that an otter like you would have trouble with friends."
"Well," he said in a more nervous tone, "I have trouble keeping friends when they find out more about me."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
He stayed silent for moment as though he was unsure of what to say next. I leaned in closer and said, "I promise to still be your friend."
The right side of his mouth moved up a little to show a slight smile. He looked down and said, "I lose a lot of friends because I tell them that I'm gay."
I kept my arm around him and I have his shoulder as squeeze with my paw. He looked up at me nervously. I was smiling at him, "There's something that I should tell you too."
"Don't tell me you're..."
I nodded, "Yeah, I'm gay too."
Kyle let out a small laugh. "I can honestly say that this has never happened to me. I have been freaking out in my head about this."
"Does your family know," I asked.
"Yeah they know and they couldn't be more supportive. And yours?"
"They know," I answered, "I told them during Parent's Weekend. I only started coming out to certain people a couple of weeks ago. I told Mike by accident, and John," I paused for a moment as the though of John came up in my head, "I-I told him at the hospital."
I felt a paw hold onto mine. I looked up to see Kyle looking me in the eye. "You had a thing for John didn't you?" He asked. Wow! I meeting him for the first time, and he already can tell what I'm thinking.
"Yeah, I told him about it." I answered, "He said he didn't mind me being gay, but he isn't gay. I know that it was wishful thinking to think that he was also gay and I assumed that he wasn't, but I hoped that maybe, just maybe, he would have feelings for me. Now that I think of it, my feelings for John were more infatuation than anything else."
Kyle squeezed my paw a little more in an understanding manner. We sat there for a little when Kyle spoke up, "I know that it's a little uncomfortable to talk about, but I want to thank you for-for saving my life in the alley." Kyle started to tear up, "I hate to think what Cole would do if you had not show up. I'm sorry that you and Mike ended up in the hospital, I feel especially sorry for Mike. I know it's not my fault, but I still feel guilty. I feel guilty that I'm out of the hospital and Mike is still in critical condition."
My heart broke for Kyle. Here he was with a case of survivor's guilt, not that anyone died, but he felt terrible for Mike, someone that he doesn't know. It was my turn to give his paw a little squeeze. I said, "Don't you think for a second that this is your fault. I know where you are coming from because I felt that same guilt. As bad as this whole situation has been, there has been some good that came from it. I got to meet you and I know that you are a wonderful otter. We can be thankful for these hardships, because it brings us together and reminds us of what's important to us. I for one realized that Mike is important, John is important, my family is important, you are important to me."
Kyle looked into my eyes and we simultaneously leaned into each other and our muzzles touched. It was my first kiss, OUR first kiss. I didn't know what to do, but I just closed my eyes and let my instincts take over. Our lips parted a little and I drove my tongue into Kyle's muzzle and started exploring the insides. Kyle returned the favor and explored my muzzle. I wrapped my arms around him as our tongues continued to wrestle with each other. I didn't want the kiss to end and it seemed that Kyle didn't want it to end either. After what seemed like hours of kissing, our lips finally parted. My eyes slowly opened as I saw Kyle's do the same.
"Wow" was all I could say.
"I've never kissed anyone like that before," Kyle said as released his hold around me.
I responded, "I haven't kissed anyone before, besides my parents." Kyle raised an eyebrow at me, and I smiled a bit, "it's embarrassing, but it's true."
"Well, I'm honored that I could be your first. It's actually really cute." Kyle looked at the clock, "Well, I was going to see if you wanted to sleep on the couch, but after what just happened, do you want to sleep in my bed with me?"
"I'd love to." I said with a smile.
We went up the stairs and Kyle put the drinks that we didn't consume away. We then headed up the next set of stairs and into Kyle's room. It was a little messy, but mine was the same way. Kyle had posters on the wall of different bands and movies. The bed was similar to the beds at hotels, so it had room for both of them. Kyle started stripping off his shirt and worked on his pants. I took off my shirt as well, and nervously worked on my pants as well.
"Don't worry," Kyle said as though he were reading my mind, "I sleep in my boxers, you can too if you want."
With the reassurance, I finished stripping down to my boxers and got into the bed. Kyle came on shortly afterwards. We lied down facing each other and then we moved into another kiss. Our arms wrapped around each other. Once our lips parted, Kyle gave me a smile as said, "Goodnight Allen."
"Goodnight Kyle" I answered as Kyle turned around and inched back towards me and then I wrapped my arms around his chest as we spooned. I added, "I love you."
Kyle turned his head to look at me, "I love you too."
Kyle fell asleep before I did. As I lied there with my new boyfriend in my arms, I felt, for the first time, like I was truly happy with myself. I was the luckiest wolf in the world. I didn't have anything to hide or to worry about at that moment. All that mattered was Kyle. After all of the crap that has happened, something great came out at the other end. His breathing became rhythmic and it relaxed me as I closed my eyes and fell asleep.
