Journey to Another World 6 Ch. 5
A ghostly wailing sound was what awoke me in the night as I quickly shot up and began to look around the room. The room was totally dark as we'd gone to bed some time in the night and the clock showed that all of us had been asleep for only two hour at most. I scanned the room for a while longer, trying to figure out where the sound had come from, so you could imagine the shock/surprise when Mismagius suddenly appeared right in front of my face, almost out of thin air.
"Holy ghost...it's a ghost!" I yelled out as I scared nearly out of my pants, but was knocked back to my senses as I fell out of the bed backwards and hit my head on the floor.
"_ Donovin...keep it down. You will wake the...snore _." Rena was about to finish but just fell back asleep in mid sentence.
After I'd rubbed my head and got my bearings, did I realize that my legs were still draped over the bed as well as over Rena, while my back was on the floor. Pulling my legs off the bed, I got so that I was sitting normally on the floor and looked around. It was about then that Mismagius came floating down in front of me to give me a wide grin as she then pulled down at the sides of her mouth so that it made a silly face.
I let out a little laugh at the face then leaned my back against the bed. "Alright Samantha, I'm awake." I said as popped my neck a few times then looked up to her. "So what is it? It's got to be pretty important if your willing to wake me in the middle of the night." She nodded then pointed to something over my shoulder. I followed her cloak/arm and looked over my shoulder to see that she was pointing towards something at the window. I gave her a nod, got up, and walked carefully around the room (To make sure that I didn't step on anyone) to the window to look out as she went through the glass and pointed towards something in the distance.
At first I couldn't really see anything that was out there as my eyes were adjusting to the darkness, but after a few moments I was able to see that she was pointing towards the Lost Tower. I did a double take between her and the tower and when I finally looked back at her I could see a look of longing and pleading in her eyes. I took a long sigh and nodded to her. "We are so close to the tower that you want to go there and see if your son is alright." She nodded to that and placed both ends of her cloak together in a pleading notion and made a pouting face.
"Alright, alright. No need to make that kind of face. I'll take you out there so that you can check and see if he's still there." I said with her as she let out a happy wail and smiled as she flew over and gave me a kiss to my cheek. I shivered a bit as she kissed me, as the kiss was so cold that it was like being kissed by an ice statue.
It only took me a few minutes to get my things together, but I decided to let everyone else sleep. 'I shouldn't need anything. After all, we are just going on over there to check up on her son. As well as the fact that everyone's should be asleep at this hour.' I thought as I left the Pokemon Center with Samantha floating level at my right shoulder.
The outside of the Pokemon center was very quiet and the only light that was showing outside was from either the street lamps, stars, and/or a few night owls from windows up in some businesses or apartments. Though the whole place was quiet, my heart wasn't. It was like one of those times that you might feel like something would just jump out at you to try and scare ya. Though the fact that we were heading towards a tower that was fully infested/infected with ghosts may be adding to that fear. That's when I stopped and looked over at Samantha as she stopped and slowly turned to look over at me with a confused look on her face. I took a slow/long breath as I gave her a nod and the two of us continued onward towards the Lost Tower.
I didn't know what it was about graveyards, but...they always gave me the shivers. All those decomposing bodies, hollow skulls, and everything else just below the surface did something to me that...hell, I didn't know...creeps me out. Maybe it was the fate of everyone that lived to end up as nothing more than a pile of bones and rotting flesh that made my stomach lurch for a second. Then something else caught in my mind, 'What is a ghost Pokemon then?'
I looked up at my guide and thought about her. 'What was a Ghost Pokemon anyways? Was it a person in it's previous life or a Pokemon that'd passed onto the other side? Or more to the fact, were they born or created?' I thought about those questions for a while and stopped abruptly as part of my face disappeared into Samantha. I was taken aback a bit as an overwhelming cold covered my face, but when I looked up I noticed what I was in and quickly backed away. "Whops. Sorry about that Sam. Didn't notice you stop so suddenly there."
She turned around so that she was looked over her left shoulder at me, her hat tipped slightly up so that she could look under it, and she gave me a smile. I didn't know what it was about that smile, but for some reason it was a motherly/warming smile. It was like one of those ones that you know that everything was going to be alright. "Thanks Samantha. I'm alright." I said as I stood next to her and looked up to realize that we'd arrived at the Lost Tower a lot quicker than I'd realized. "Do you want me to accompany you inside?" She gave me a bit of a concerned look, but after a while she nodded. With that settled the two of us entered into the tower and started looking around for her son.
Just as I expected, the first floor was hardly much more than a massive graveyard, as the place was covered in a maze of tombstones. Out of curiosity I decided to look down at one that was right inside of the entrance and tried to read what it said. Much of the writing was worn away, but I was able to tell that the grave did belong to a Venusar named Victor, though the rest of the writing seemed to have been worn away due to age. It was not really that much of a surprise considering that we were on the first level and many people would be more likely to bury their friends/family somewhere close to the ground level to visit them easier without going up the levels and dealing with the ghosts that were likely to be further up the levels of the Lost Tower.
Turning to look over at Samantha, I could see that a look of glee on her face. It seemed that the atmosphere around here suited her quite well or that it was just simply the fact that she was glad to be home. "Well then, I guess we should start looking around for that kid of yours Sam." She turned to look over her shoulder at me and gave me a nod. "Any sign of him on this level?" I asked in hope as I really didn't want to travel through this place, especially at night.
She turned back to face further into the room and gave out a slight wail that sent shivers down my spine. After waiting a while, to which their was no reply, she turned to shake her head to me. My shoulders slumped a bit at that and I shook my head. "I guess their's no helping it then. Lets go ahead and head up a level and see if he's there."
After navigating the maze of tombstones, we made it to the stairs to the next upper level and I sighed in relief. 'If I recall the series right. Ghost Pokemon just love to play pranks on unsuspecting people in the TV series. Though we got through this level without incident, that doesn't mean that we're out of the graveyard yet. They're probably just debating with themselves as-to when the best time would be to scare the **** out of me.' I thought as I took the first step to the next level and looked around at all the graves on the first level.
The next level was a bit more lively as their was a definite chill to the air, but unlike the first level, their were actually people actually on this level. A few of which looked like legitimate people here to pay their respects to those of the dearly departed, while others that were dressed in Goth like cloths. It was pretty easy to guess which were the mourners and the other that were trainers. 'I doubt that their will be any pranks from ghost Pokemon on this level either.' I thought as I looked up to Samantha and saw her looking about the room.
Only one of the kids in the room challenged us to a battle (Which wasn't that much of a challenge as the kid was to scared of ghosts and thinking that I was one, he never gave a command to his Pokemon to attack or defend from Samantha's attacks), as the only other kid in the room/floor was blocked by a set of tombstones. I wondered why he wouldn't just come around the tombstone and challenge me, until I noticed that right in front of him was an item that seemed to have been 'Conveniently Discarded' for someone to come by and pick up. 'He probably put that there just to entice someone to come by, pick it up, then he can legitimately challenge that person to a battle.'
Upon going up to the next level the temperature seemed to drop a little more and a fog seemed to be hanging about the room. Another thing that was different about this room was that this one didn't have a single trainer/human being in it. That thought creped me out a bit, but not even nearly as much as the haunting like laugh that seemed to coming from somewhere within the fog. 'It's probably a...ghost type just...just trying to scare me.' I thought to myself as I tried to put on a brave face but I knew that I was in trouble.
I stopped in my tracks as a low groaning/moaning sound could be heard from somewhere. 'It is a time like this that something starts pulling itself out of the grave or...' I gave a yell as something shot out of the ground and grabbed my left ankle that'd strayed to far/close to one of the graves beside me. With barely any thought I quickly wrenched my foot away with a soccer like kick and tore my leg away from whatever was holding it.
When I looked down I could see that their was a boney/rotting hand grabbing onto my ankle. Much of the meat on the hand looked too rotten and the skin was pealing back to reveal decaying muscle underneath, the pinky and the middle finger were missing but the thing was still tightly wrapped around my ankle. As I tried to reach down and remove the hand I fell down onto my backside and that's when everything else went wrong. Many more groans and grunts were heard and I knew that it was only a short time before more arms/body/ and other very body parts started pulling themselves out of the ground and attack me.
"Damn it all!" I yelled out as I quickly looked up and around for Samantha. She seemed to be interested in something far off or to where the next set of stairs were. "SAMANTHA...HELP!" I yelled out to her which quickly got her to turn and look down at me. Her head shot up and her eyes went a little wide, but she didn't stay like that long as she quickly lifted her head to the ceiling and let out a long wail.
The groans and grunts slowly started to fade away and the ground stopped shaking. After a few moments, all was quiet I could see that the fog in the room was quickly dissipating. Once the fog was nearly gone I could see that their were several Haunter and Gangars laughing and making silly faces towards/at me. Obviously they'd found it funny to play this little prank on me and were sill getting a kick out of the look of fright on my face. Samantha turned to the group of ghost types who were finally coming off their laughing fit.
A quick conversation and the laughter finally stopped and the other ghosts faded out, along with the decomposing hand that puffed into a Haunters hand that sank back into the ground. The hand gave me the bird before it too followed suit with the other ghosts and vanished. 'That nearly gave me a heart attack.' A horrible thought quickly flashed through my head as I quickly tugged open my britches and sighed with relief that I didn't need to make a hasty retreat to the Pokemon center for a new set of drawers. After recomposing myself, I stood back up and started to look around for Samantha.
Samantha was looking around the room, giving off a wail or two in hopes, but their came no reply or sign of her son. I saw her head sink a bit and she looked a bit down trodden. "Cheer up Samantha. There's still a few more levels that we haven't checked yet." I said in a bit of a cheery tone, which she gave me a bit of a defeated/forced/empty smile.
*That would be nice if it were true, but my call can be heard throughout the whole tower.* She said in her own language with a bit of a defeated tone. *There is no way that he would ignore my call for a third time if he were to still be here.* She looked over her shoulder at me and I could see a tear slowly roll down her cheek.
'Ghost types can cry?' I thought but then the tear finally struck home. "You don't think that he's here, do you." I asked rhetorically to which she nodded and more tears slowly started to fall down her face as she slowly floated down to sit upon one of the tombstones. I didn't know what to say at a time such as this. 'It was probably true that her son was gone since he would've come running when she called.'
I was about to sit down next to her and try and console her when one of the Goth kid/trainers came on over and stood before us. "Is that your Mismagius there?" He asked as I looked up at him and scowled at him as I hadn't realized that their were other people on this level and this kid did nothing to help me when I needed it. I'd seen many kids like him back home and this one matched their look almost perfectly. His hair (Which was as black as midnight) was plastered over one of his eyes on his ashen face, his eyes were nearly as white as his face but around them he had some kind of design that looked similar to the all seeing eye of RA, he had a polished silver Haunter necklace draped over his neck that hung down to the middle of his black shirt, his pants were really baggy and had chains coming and going throughout different holes in his pants, a large belt that looked to have spikes coming out of every part of it, and finally leather wrist guards that had two inch doubled up spikes that looked like they'd hurt a lot if they made contact with anyone/thing.
After I'd assessed the young man I gave him a slight nod and knelt down to try and console her. "Sort of. I'm..."
"THEN LETS BATTLE!" He yelled out to which I slightly jumped at, not expecting for this kid to break character so easily. I looked over at him with an agitated look and I could see that he was indeed serious. "Your Mismagius against my Pokemon that I'd just caught earlier today. One on one." He finished with a bit of a smile as he pulled off a Pokeball and enlarged it in front of my face, as if to say that he could just defeat or intimidate me with an enlarged Pokeball.
"No." I said simply as I turned back to Samantha and lifted her hat that was covering over her face, which she seemed to use to try and hide the fact that she was crying. "I've got more important things to worry about right now, than a battle."
"W...what?" He stammered as he stood upright and looked down at me with a disbelieving look on his face. "You can not turn down a Pokemon battle. Especially when you have been challenged and you currently have a, healthy Pokemon by your side. The rules state..."
I quickly turned, grabbed the kid by the scruff of his shirt with both hands, and lifted him a little off his feet. "What! The rules state what?! I have to battle you just because you challenge me?!" I asked him in a very harsh tone as I gave him a shake. "Your nothing but a wana-be punk who thinks he can do whatever he wants just because he thinks he dressed up really cool. Now," I tossed him onto his butt and sneered down to him. "Why don't you just go home, put on some more makeup you little girl, and think about who you really should challenge to a battle." I turned back to Samantha. "Besides which, you don't even act Goth at all, you poser."
This seemed to be the last straw for the kid as he quickly leapt to his feet and yelled at me. "NOBODY CALLS ME A POSER AND GETS AWAY WITH IT!" I heard the sound of a Pokeball being straining against a clenched fist and turned to look at him standing several feet away. "Haunter come out and show this jerk who is the better trainer." He then tossed the ball out, and just as it reached half way between us in it's arch the top half of it popped open and back to release it's white light that solidified into the Haunter.
Like many Haunters, this one wasn't any different. It's main body was in the shape of an inverted purple triangle, large slanted triangle eyes that looked to be slanted towards each other with small beady eyes, two disconnected hands that closely resembled human ones that'd had all their meat taken out and turned into long sharp claws, and finally a mouth that stretched all the way across it's body that housed that usually long/wicked/paralyzing tongue of it's kind. The Haunter started to laugh menacingly as it used it's disconnected hands to pull it's mouth into weird/disbelieving forms to try and intimidate us.
'This kid is actually series about challenging me to a battle.' I thought as I turned back and looked at Samantha who was now crying into the corners of her cloak as she used them to try and hide her eyes. 'And as a normal sword fighter I can't do a thing to defend myself or attack a ghost. So...' "I'm sorry to have to ask you to do this Samantha, as I know that your really not up to a battle right now, but I'm going to need your help in battling this kid and his Haunter. Do you think you could help me?"
After a moment or two more, she stopped crying and looked up at me with tears at the corners of her eyes. She wiped at the tears once or twice more until she finally gave me a slow nod and floated up/off the tombstone. "Thanks Samantha," I said as I turned back to the boy and gave him a scowl. "And once we're done here, we'll continue to..." It was then that I noticed that Samantha hadn't come up to float by my side like she normally did when we were about to battle against someone.
I didn't know what was going on so I turned and looked over my shoulder to see what was going on. The look that I saw upon her face was one of total shock and disbelief. Her eyes were open all the way, her mouth was in that of a shape of an overly large upturned oval and she seemed to be pointing towards the Haunter with her cloak. It was like she was seeing someone that'd been... "Oh man. You've got to be kidding me."
TO BE CONTINUED....RIGHT NOW =P
Turning back to look at her I just shook my head. "Of all the Ironic situations." I pinched the bridge of my nose then looked back up at her after I wiped my face from my forehead down. "That's your son, isn't it Samantha." I asked rhetorically to which she nodded. Taking a long sigh I looked over at the boy and he seemed to be taken aback by everything as he had this stupid/confused look upon his face. "What are we going to do here?" I asked the kid.
"Huh?"
"The battle..." I simply stated. "Samantha here has been looking all over for her son and you've caught him."
"Wait a minute." He then pointed to Samantha then back to his Haunter. "Are you saying that your Mismagius is my Haunters..."
"Mother," I interrupted him. "That's right. I really don't think that a son is going to go up against it's mother. Especially when the two have been waiting this long to be reunited after being so drastically separated a while ago." I laughed a bit as both Samantha and Haunter slowly floated over to one another, stared at each other with an arms length between them, then fiercely embrace each other which looked like it would've popped a balloon if there was one between them. After they'd shared a hard hug between them, they separated and quickly jumped into conversation between them.
This only seemed to infuriate the boy as he stomped the ground with his black spike bottomed boots. "No...no...NO!" He yelled as he pulled out a Pokeball and pointed it towards his Pokemon. "I called you out here to battle that other trainer and that's what your going to do. Haunter use..."
It didn't take a rocket scientist to see that that Haunter wasn't going to do anything that that kid wanted, especially with that deadly look that it shot back to that kid, then gave him a smile as it pulled down the bottom of it's left eyelid and stuck out it's tongue at him. "I'd recommend that you not try that again." I said as the Haunted nodded to the boy and then went back into conversation with Samantha.
I walked on over and stood beside the boy. "Now we've got to decide on what to do from here." I said as I placed a hand on his shoulder and gave it a bit of a pat. "Seeing that neither one of our Pokemon are going to battle."
He gave me an enraged look as he looked up at my towering height over him. With little warning, he smacked my hand away, then pushed me away from him. "Like the heck I will decide on anything other than mopping the floor with you after you insulted me like that." He then pulled out two other Pokeballs and showed them to me. "If my Haunter isn't going to battle you, then I'll send out my other Pokemon and have them battle you."
I was a bit taken aback by this and took a few steps back from him. 'Now I'm wishing that I'd decided to take Kit, Rena, or even Jenavee with me.' I thought as I could see that the boy was indeed serious about sending out another Pokemon. "Now hold up a second. You just told me that you were only going to use one Pokemon to battle me." He smirked at me. "Your telling me that you had no intention of letting me walk away after a battle?"
"That is right," He said with a bit of a nasty smirk. "After all, this look that you so thoroughly insulted, does not pay for itself you know."
