Around the Bend Part V
#5 of Around the Bend
Chapter Four:
Unexpected Company
The sound of the bullet being fired was excruciatingly loud, the bang resonating around the forest of buildings. Time seemed to slow down as the projectile made it's way across a quarter mile of urban city, right into the temple of the intended target. The goliath of a tiger fell without a sound, the bullet cutting his life short without him knowing what had happened. Mere moments later all hell broke loose. His personal guard took quick action, the closest going to check on their employer as the others surrounded him, guns drawn and pointed in every which way. The furs closest started running in all directions, knocking each other down as they fought to gain ground thinking they would be next. Any one not in the direct vicinity stopped dead in their tracks to watch the horrific event unfold.
The otter immediately began to dismantle the rifle he had used and placed the pieces back in the case he brought it in. A shadow passed over him as he stood up, strapping the briefcase to his back and pulling out a small box of matches from his pants pocket. He lit one and threw it under the chair he was sitting on, right into a tiny can of napalm. The chair burst into a small superheated bonfire, almost instantaneously disintegrating. The otter started running to the edge of the building, only having seconds to flee before someone would surely notice him. He reached the ledge and launched himself off the side of the building. He was airborne for just a few moments before feeling powerful scaled paws wrapping themselves around his waist and carrying him through the skies. He looked up at his savior as a beep came over his earpiece.
"God damn your heavy." the voice was from the dragon.
"Shut up and keep flying. You know I 'ate heights." the otter replied. The dragon laughed and flew higher so they couldn't be seen.
Almost an hour later they arrived at their destination. It was an older house outside of town, large and beautiful. The dragon flew around the back and dropped the otter before landing. The otter hit the ground hard, rolling for a few feet before coming to an abrupt halt. He slowly stood, coughing and holding his head.
"Wot the 'ell, man? You couldn' jus' let me down soft like?" the otter yelled, stretching his back and riffling tough his pockets to pull out a cigarette. The dragon stretched and yawned, shaking his head.
"Nope. That was way to entertaining." the dragon replied, flexing his wings to relax them before folding them up and walking towards the back door of the house. Right before he walked though the doorway he turned around and looked at his partner. "Jace." The otter turned his head to glare at the dragon. "Nice shot. You did good." Then he disappeared. Jace just stared in the same direction, knowing full and well why the dragon said that. He took a hit from his cigarette before proceeding in the direction of a small shed not far off. He tossed the last of his tobacco when he reached the entrance and stormed through the front door.

Otter bolted upright, covered in sweat and breathing irregularly. He drug a paw down his face and looked around. A few minutes passed before he tossed the covers off of him and sat up, holding his head in his paws. Devin stirred slightly before emerging from the covers and looked at the otter with half dead eyes. He woke up instantly when he heard quiet sobbing coming from his roommate. He threw the covers off of himself and sat up quickly, wrapping an arm over Otter's shoulder.
"Hey, hey. What's wrong?" he asked, worried. Otter wiped his eyes with the back of his paw and looked up at Devin.
"N-nothing. Don' worry abou' it." the otter replied, trying to smile. The front didn't work for long because another tear dripped down Otter's cheek before he buried his face into Devin's chest, crying. Devin just held the crying boy, running a paw over the otter's hair and swaying softly. It wasn't long before Otter had fallen back asleep. Devin laid back down, still holding Otter, and followed suite.

"Now I'll only be up with Zahna for a few days. Week tops." Michelle stated, tossing a small brown box into her suitcase. Devin and Otter were standing at her doorway, covered in paint from their paintball match they had just gotten back from. Devin tried wiping some paint from his fur but ended up smearing it.
"I think we can handle it, mom. Me an' Otter ain't gonna burn the place down or nothin'." He said, wiping the paint from his fingers on Otter. Otter swatted his paw at the skunk and nodded in agreement. Michelle sat on her suitcase to close it.
"Just keep the place clean, will you?" She pleaded as she grabbed her coat. "And try to keep the noise down. We don't wanna freak out the neighbors with all your sex sounds." She started to roll her suitcase to the front door. Otter looked at Devin, embarrassed.
"Are we really that loud?" He asked. Devin dismissed the question with a paw and followed Michelle to the door. She had already stepped outside before turning around.
"And one more thing-..." She started.
"Don't care. Bye!" Devin said as he shut the door before the squirrel could start talking again. He locked the door and threw himself on the couch. Otter stared at the door as Michelle started yelling profanities.
"Why don' she just unlock the door?" He asked, looking over to Devin. The skunk reached in his pocket and brought out Michelle's house keys. Otter smirked and laughed. "You're horrible." He said as he laid on Devin's lap.
"Shut it. I was just tired of hearing her bitch." Devin replied, playfully flicking Otter's nose. Otter smiled and wiggled to get comfortable. He closed his eyes and thought about taking a nap, but something bothered him.
"Are we really loud?"

Devin emerged from their bathroom, wet and clothed only by a towel. Otter stepped into the doorway, also wet but using his towel to dry his hair.
"Okay..." Devin said as he made his way into the kitchen. "We might have to work on being a bit quieter." Otter blushed and pulled his hair back into his normal ponytail. Devin stopped in front of the coffee maker and begun to make himself a cup. Otter was close behind, moving to the fridge to find something to munch on. Otter stood back up, with a chunk of cheese in is maw, and leaned against the counter, slowly chewing on his snack. Devin glanced over his shoulder, noticing the otter just staring in his direction. "Something wrong?" Otter shook his head and smiled sheepishly.
"Jus' staring at that brilliant tail of yours." He said, walking over to wrap his arms around the skunk's waist. Devin turned around, rolling is eyes and laughing softly.
"Good gods boy, didn't you get enough of it?" Devin said, bringing his tail around to tease at Otter's side. Otter started rocking is hips lightly.
"Nope. Though I know I'll get more after we eat." Otter let go of Devin and started towards their room. Devin blinked and tilted his head, pausing a moment before looking at Otter.
"After we eat?" Devin made his way to his room. "Hell, we can do it while we're eating. If you're into that." He peeked in to see Otter getting dressed.
"We can't; we'll be in public." Otter said matter-of-factually. He slipped a shirt on and opened their closet to find a pair of jeans. "Now get dressed and think of wot you want to eat. We're going out."
"Going out? Like for food?" Devin asked, walking into the room and sitting on his bed.
" 'Course. Unless you don't want to" Otter turned his back to Devin and moved his tail out of the way. "Do these jeans make my arse look big?" Devin nodded. Otter smiled and walked to the doorway. "Genius. Now get dressed, we leave in fifteen."
Minutes later the two furs walked out of the front door on their way to dinner. Devin had suggested going into town to this small diner he frequented when he worked at a small art store nearby. The two decided to walk, the restaurant not being but a few blocks away. They walked down the road, Otter holding onto Devin's arm and chatting about nothing. By the time they reached the diner it had grown dark and the streets were alive with lights and furs, though the diner itself was relatively empty. The two walked in and were immediately greeted by an energetic young bunny girl. She was shorter than Otter by only a few inches and well formed, having a noticeable bust and a curvy figure. She had waist length onyx black hair, held back in a neat braid and wore the diner's uniform.
"Devin! It's been a while! How are you? This a friend of yours? Boyfriend!? Oh my you two are so cute!" the girl spoke at a speed unlike anything Otter had ever heard. It took all of his mental energy to comprehend everything she said. Devin smiled and waved a paw to silence her.
"Good to see you too, Jessica. This is my roommate, Otter. We're not together." Devin spoke in a way almost like how you would talk to a young cub.
"Awwww! But you two are so cute!" Jessica whined, her face looking convincingly sad. And as fast as she became sad, she was springy again. "Nice to meet you Mister Otter! What a strange name. Is it just a pet name? Did Devin give it to you? Oh! I knew it! You two ARE dating!" She was bouncing and smiling like that's all she knew how to do. Otter was becoming impatient, but didn't want to seem rude in front of Devin, so he just smiled and waved.
"No ma'am, that's jus' my name. And like Devin said, we're jus' friends." Otter said, sliding his paws into his pockets. Jessica giggled and bounced around even more.
"Oh my god! You sound foreign! Where are you from? You're french, aren't you?" the bunny girl was becoming ecstatic. Devin stepped up and poked the bunny's nose. Immediately she calmed down, muscles loosened, her stance becoming passive, still and looked at Devin with a blank expression.
"Jessica, dear, we're really hungry. Think we can sit down and order?" he asked, moving his paw away from the girl and stepping next to Otter again. Jessica nodded and started to make her way to an open table. Devin and Otter followed a few feet back.
" How... How did you do that?' Otter asked, completely perplexed at what just happened. They sat down as Devin explained.
"Calm her down? Her parents couldn't handle her amount of energy, so they hired someone to hypnotize her. Oh, drink, um.. coffee. Black." He paused long enough for Otter to order before continuing. "You just touch her nose like that and bam; she's like a zombie for a few minutes."
"That's so wrong. But strangely entertaining." Jessica came back a few moments later with Devin's coffee and a small glass of alcohol for Otter. But by now the zombiefication had worn off. She bounded up smiling and wiggling around like nothing had happened, nearly scaring Otter into a heart attack. He squeaked and nearly fell out of his seat. Jessica giggled and handed Devin his coffee.
"Here ya go Devin! The usual!" She turned to look at Otter before setting his drink down, her expression only serving to scare the otter more. "And here you go, Monsieur." She almost sounded seductive as she poked Otter's nose before blasting away to meet a new pair of unsuspecting customers who had just entered. Devin started to laugh uproariously.
"Oh man! You shoulda seen your face!" the skunk managed to gasp out between fits of laughter.
"Wot? Wot's so funny abou' my face?" Otter asked angrily. "That was really frightening! She 'as way too much energy for me." Devin managed to control his laughter enough to respond.
"Too much energy?" he chuckled, holding his sides from the pain.
"Yeah! I swear she shocked me when she poked my nose. Way too much energy." Otter picked up his cup to take a sip, hoping it would calm him down.
"Only 'cuz she wants to do you." Devin said, smiling and holding up a menu. Otter nearly spit his drink out and began to cough. "Oh come on, you saw how she looked at you! And that poke? She totally wants in your pants."
"Is this... *Cough* Wot I get for taking you out?" Otter mumbled and wiped his mouth with a napkin. "Fine. I see 'ow it is."
"Oh stop it. You know I' just messing with you." Devin murred and lifted a foot paw to rub the inside of Otter's thigh. "Tell ya what, I'll drop my clothes let you play with my tail all night, alright?" Otter just blushed and smiled softly.
After finishing their meals and paying the bill, the two furs tried to make it outside. Unfortunately Jessica noticed this and seemed to just materialize in front of them. Otter's heart sank and even Devin seemed a bit unnerved by how fast she could move.
"You guys leaving? Aww... Well okay! Hope to see you again soon Devin!" Again, her gaze focused on Otter and she stepped next him. "And I hope to see you even sooner." She put a paw in his back pocket and gave his bottom a quick squeeze before running to the other side of the diner where a customer was calling for help. Otter looked over to Devin, the otter's face slightly pale.
"Was I just... Raped?" Otter stuttered out. Devin walked out the door smiling and shaking his head.
By the time the two made it back to campus, it was almost midnight and it had started to rain. They ran inside their dorm building as quickly as they could and slid into the elevator. Otter held close to Devin to warm up, squeezing the skunks arm slightly and smiling up at him. When they got to their room Otter bounced ahead to unlock their door, already having his keys out, but stopped suddenly. Devin blinked and nudged the Otter.
"You gonna unlock it or-" Devin started, but was cut off by Otter hushing him. Devin snorted, annoyed, but stepped back when Otter reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small makeshift weapon. Otter lightly pushed their door open with ease since the door had been unlocked and left cracked open. Devin's ears twitched when he heard a small crash. "S-someone's in there..." Devin whispered, almost to himself. Otter nodded and began to creep inside, signaling Devin to stay put. Otter's head twisted towards the kitchen when he heard some shuffling coming from that direction. He positioned himself by the doorway and waited. Within moments there was a disgruntled yell and a loud sound of breaking glass, soon followed by footsteps. Otter shifted his feet slightly, waiting for the robber to appear. As soon as the figure walked trough the doorway into the living room, Otter pounced, hurling himself at the intruder and throwing him to the ground. The robber yelled and flailed around when he felt something sharp pierce his shoulder. Otter growled and went to stab the robber again, but was knocked off balance when a fist connected with the side of his head. Otter stumbled back as the intruder stood up,disoriented and in serious pain. The figure reached back and screamed as he pulled out the object that was impeded in his flesh. He threw it to the side and started to make his way out the front door when he heard his attacker getting up. The intruder panicked, his legs bursting into a head long dash out the door. He stumbled slightly, but regained his composure quickly and ran down the hallway towards the elevator with Otter close behind. Devin couldn't do anything but watch the two run down the hall, frozen to the spot when he saw blood splattered on the floor, until he saw the doors of the elevator opening and a girl standing inside.
"H-... Hey! Stop him!" Devin yelled, waving his arms and pointing at the running furs. The girl looked up just on time to see a figure in black leap at her. Without thinking she stepped to the side and threw her fist into the figure's stomach, creating enough force to knock him back into the hallway. For a moment Otter thought he was about to catch this robber, but right as he and the girl got close enough to grab him, the robber sprinted to the side and threw himself out the window. Glass went everywhere as they watched the intruder fall out of site. Otter ran over to the broken window, glass crunching underneath his foot paws as he looked down. He blinked and rubbed his shoulder; no sign of the robber was seen.
