THE GUARDIANS SHADOW
CH 13
For the next three days, the two of us spent roaming around the base. Since I/we'd taken out that giant spider Dokugumon, other wild Digimon realized that there was a Hunter in the area and quickly fled to either hide or go underground till the threat had passed. So as you can imagine that left little for me to occupy my time, except to get angrier and angrier at the fact that we were stuck there for the duration.
"You've got to be ****ing kidding me. The repairs are done but there are no pilots with the guts to fly them!" I yelled as I held up the same traffic control person by his white buttoned up long sleeve shirt so that he was a little off the ground as well as press a knife to his jewels to show that I meant business. "If you would've told me that sooner, I would have taken my bike up there and avoided this whole mess."
The man couldn't even get in a word as his shirt had been button on the top and was now cutting off his windpipe. Slowly but surely his face started to turn to a deeper shade of red, then purple, but before it turned that all shade of blue signifying that the person was dangerously close to loosing oxygen to the brain, I let him go. The man let out a strange sound, like that of a bag of air that just sucked in a bunch of air. After a few moments the man began to cough then gave me a fearful look.
"P...please," Cough, cough. "I didn't...k...know."
My face scrunched up with anger and I pulled back my fist, to see the man quickly raise up his arms in a defensive manner over his face, but that's where I stopped. I let out a yell, then irritated growl, finally I just huffed as I turned around and let my shoulders droop. "I shouldn't be taking out my anger on someone as insignificant as you. I should take it out on those Digimon that have those spineless wimps that you call pilots." Slowly lowering my fist I banged it against a wall, to hopefully vent at least some of my anger without doing something that I'd regret.
I needed to find someway of getting off this base and back towards the base in Washington, and the only means that were open to me right now was my slightly busted up bike. 'I may have no choice in the matter.' I thought as my anger slowly started to dissipate at the thoughts of how I was going to beat up the first pilot that was unlucky enough to cross my path.
After a while I stepped off the last step of the towers staircase to see Renamon leaning up against the wall next to the door with her arms crossed across her chest. She had her head lowered and her legs were slowly tapping to that silent tune that she liked against the wall while her tail kept in time as it swished behind her. "Any luck."
I simply shook my head as I sat down on the last step and looked over the empty airfield. "The plains and all are repaired, but the pilots are to afraid to take them up, let alone take us back to the base in Washington." I looked down at my watch and saw that it was still pretty early and that I'd probably be getting hungry in an hour or two. "Our next option would be to ride back to the base on my bike and hope that it hold together long enough to make the several day trip." I said to her as I looked up and saw her shiver.
It was obvious to me that she didn't like the idea any more than I did as the wind-chill would make the trip very uncomfortable for me without my jacket and her in all that fur of hers, though that would have been the next easiest solution. "Another idea would be to take some other means of transportation and ship my bike to the base. Though that in itself is a problem as things tend to get lost in transit and I really love that bike."
"Is there a third option?" She asked as she pushed herself off the wall and turned to face me.
"Not really." I said as I looked up at her and shook my head. "There is a third option for me, as I can just call up the Hunters and have them get me a transport, though the thought of what they would do to us if they knew that I was a Digimon tamer would not be preferable, to either you or myself."
"I guess the only option would be for us to ride on up to...Washington, on your bike." She said Washington as if she had no idea what or where that was. "Though I loath the idea as it will really mess up my fur with all the wind and those bugs flying into my fur as well."
A brief image of a set of monkeys picking bugs out of their friends backs briefly popped into my head, that quickly changed to those of a set of Renamon doing the same thing. I couldn't help but let out a small chuckle that quickly turned into a sigh. "I have to agree with that thought. I wish that there was another way, but we'll have to deal with what may come on our way back up to Washington."
The two of us just stared at each other for a while until Renamon jumped and her eyes went wide. "Oh, that reminds me. While you were up there a man came by and handed me an envelope to deliver to you." She reached into her glove on her arm and pulled out a manila envelope that was addressed to me. "I don't know what's inside but something about the contents makes my fur stand on end a bit."
Taking the envelope from her I saw that it was indeed addressed to me. "That's strange. Nobody should know that I'm here, I wonder who..." I turned the thing over and saw that it was from the base up in Washington and addressed from the general. "Now isn't this strange. It's from the general back at the base in Washington. I wonder what he could want." Taking out a small knife from within my boot, I slit open the top of the package where it had been sealed with that sticky stuff on the back of envelopes. Holding it up, I upturned the envelope and two things fell out.
The first was a letter of about two pages long, the second was a deck of Digimon playing cards. I set the cards to the side and opened the letter. After a few minutes of reading the letter I was a little shocked at what it said. "It says here that my tranquilizer darts that I keep as my trophies that I use to take down Digimon have turned themselves into these cards." I said as I picked up the cards then set them back down. "It goes on to say that the Digimon in that area have begun to emerge from their hiding places and are causing a ruckus around the base. He want's us to return to the base as soon as possible." I looked up at Renamon to see that she had her eyes on the deck and didn't even flinch as I told her about the Digimon up in Washington.
Eventually she looked over at me and gave me a long look. "Sorry about that. I was just a little distracted. What did you say?"
I simply shook my head. "It doesn't really matter. The only thing that's really important is the last two sentences. It says that the general wants us back up in Washington ASAP. Digimon up there are coming out to play and the general doesn't have the proper means, personnel, or weapons to deal with them."
Renamon gave me a smirk then punched her right fist into her open left paw. "Wonderful. I've been very eager to get in some more fighting experience and this time there shall be plenty for the two of us." To which I couldn't help but smile and nod as I too shared her enthusiasm for a new hunt.
A few hours later found us on the road north to hopefully pass into the next state before nightfall. I'd received a new leather jacket from one of the pedestrians that owned a leather shop that had been caught up in the Dokugumons web that we destroyed. It was one of those dusters that, when standing, reached nearly all the way down to your boots, but was high enough to stay off the ground. Though this new jacket was very nice and would definitely protect me from some of the more...interesting Digimon, I still had to break it in as well as put some protective layers into it so that it would last through more than one hunt.
I was brought back to reality when Renamon tapped me on my shoulder and brought her head a little closer on my right shoulder, as to whisper or say something into my ear. "Something's up ahead. I think it's a Digimon."
I really couldn't understand what she was saying. No Digimon would be stupid enough to try and cross a busy highway during this time of day. It would be like a dear caught in the beams of a cars headlights. 'Is she just playing with me, or should I take caution?' I thought as I looked at her through the corner of my eye then back to the road. Her facial features told me that something was indeed there, as she had an intense interest in the road up ahead. So not knowing what to expect, I reached into my coat and cocked the pistol in it's holster at my side that I had in there.
As the miles passed I began to become suspicious that this thing knew of us and was trying to avoid us. The only thing that really threw me was the fact that it was staying on the road, at least that was what Renamon kept on telling me. 'Why hasn't it tried to go hide off in the woods like they normally do when something like a car comes down the road?' I thought then kicked my bike into the next gear and really took off in pursuit of this renegade/strange Digimon.
It was about half an hour before I started to see something strange upon the horizon. At first I thought it was just another happy couple riding another motorcycle like mine, with the guy driving and the girl hanging onto him by hugging him around his middle. Though as I got closer I noticed that something was off about the guy driving the bike. He was a lot bigger than the average person and his helmet looked really freaky. The guys helmet looked like it was an imitation of some kind of bird as it came down in front of his face in a point while the back of it flared out. The rest of him looked like your typical biker gang outfit, black leather jacket with some kind of fluff around the neckline, spiked boot tips, and some kind of straps that hung from the back of the jacket. At first glace that is what he appeared to be, though that seemed more and more unlikely as I approach him.
Though the girl on the back didn't take much to see that she had a pretty similar taste, though for her it worked a lot better. She was wearing a skin tight suit that looked like she'd just come from some racing event, that very nicely hugged each and every one of her curves. On the back was the name of some racing agency that ran from her upper right to the lower left of her back, and was in some kind of white reflective tape. On the top of the shoulders were some kind of hard plastic or rubber that matched the ones on her wrists and shins. Those most likely were for protection in case she were to fall off a bike or such. There were many other pads here or there, but that only seemed to add to the attraction of her form.
I was hoping to get a better look at her figure or her front but she was hugging the back of the driver so tight with her head leaning over his right shoulder, so there was no way for me to see any more of her...naughty bits. (Though the view of her backside with that getup threw pleasant shivers up my spine as I just wanted to reach out and give her nice posterior a good squeeze.)
I was almost even with the two when Renamon decided that I'd needed a dose of reality as she sunk her claws into my sides. I was turning my head to the right to yell at her when I got a better look at the man's helmet. There was a third cut in the helmet that was right between the two regular eye holes, and it had an eye in it. It was at that moment that everything came into reality as I noticed even more about the rider and it's passenger. The driver's face was a pasty white color and his eyes were the deepest green that I'd ever seen, he had a tail that stuck out from his lower back that wrapped around the girl like a belt, and his fingers ended in what were no doubt claws. I looked the girl up and down once more and finally found what I knew was the tell sign. Attached to her left hip was a dark ringed D-Ark that flapped in the wind. These two were a Beelzemon with it's female tamer.
Ever so slowly I let got of my bikes right handlebar and reached into my jacket. Just as I had pulled the gun out of my jacket did I notice that the Beelzemon had the same idea and had grabbed the one that I hadn't seen from his left leg, though just like me, he hadn't pulled it all the way out of it's holster. I looked up from his boot to his face and could see that his left eye was looking intently at me. I didn't know what or who would react first, so I decided on a small test and slowly started to put away my gun, which the Beelzemon mirrored.
We both played with each other for a bit, as we would slowly draw out our guns a little to which the other would mirror, then we both gave each other a knowing smirk then laugh. It would seem that the Beelzemon was a seasoned veteran of many a fight, and knew to respect his opponent. It was a moment or two later that the girl clinging around his waist finally noticed us doing our little intimidation and said something into the Beelzemon's ear. His eyes quickly went wide and he pulled out the gun from his leg.
Reacting on impulse, I quickly braked and heard him yell out the name of his signature attack. "DOUBLE IMPACT" He yelled out as the gun quickly fired both rounds from the double barreled gun. I watched as both barrels of the gun released their rounds almost as if time had nearly come to a complete stop, then watched as the shots passed almost directly in front of my face. I could literally feel the air that was displaced by the speed of the rounds as they moved past me. Instinct quickly kicked in as my Hunter side quickly took over and prepared for battle against this new opponent.
Pulling the bike into a sideways skid at an angle so that it wouldn't catch and throw us both off, I pulled out my gun and took aim at the Beelzemon. The only reason that I didn't fire off a round was that the angle was off and if I fired, I'd hit the girl. This handicap was taken full advantage of by the Dark Digimon, as he aimed the gun over his shoulder and fired off a few more rounds. Those these rounds weren't as large as his Double Impact rounds, though they were none-the-less deadly if they hit.
Not giving him the chance and/or satisfaction of that shot, I quickly sped off the road and into the woods that ran along side the road. 'So much for fighting this guy on the level,' I thought as I started to dodge some trees. 'He knows that I wont shoot a human and is taking advantage of that.'
"What are you doing hunter? We must fight back!" Renamon yelled in my ears as the bark of a tree a few feet to my left exploded and splinters showered over us.
"Renamon...Teleport." I said as I dodge around an overly large tree and felt the bike's weight shift as she did just that. 'He might be good with a gun, but lets see how he deals with two on one.' I thought as I started looking around for a good place to jump off the bike, stash it away, and fire back. The Beelzemon didn't give me that chance as he continued to fire off nearly precise shots that kept me away from areas that I could retaliate.
"This is to easy. Run run little Hunter, this big bad Beelzemon is hot on your tail and I'm just itching to add a notch onto my belt, saying that I've killed a Hunter." I heard him yell over the sound of our engines.
'Damn him, he mocking me.' I took a quick glance out of the corner of my eye at the distance between us over my shoulder and my eyes went wide. 'He's practically right on top of me!' I mentally screamed as I quickly focused back at the path in front of me then made a daring swerve to try and shake him. Though that did little good as he shot the tree's bark right next to my head and made me correct my angle and drive strait again.
"Not so fast Hunter. You can't just go disappearing into the woods before we've had a chance to play!" He said again in his mocking tone.
'Damn it, where is she. She should be backing me up.' My eyes darted from tree to tree on either side of my face, trying in desperate hopes to catch at least some glint of her shiny black fur darting between the trees.
