A memory of a hard won lesson.

I still remember how I felt that day. A wonderous, joyous, glee. Then a terrible, crushing heartbreak. But let's start from the beginning. Giren Avalbruk; a young Dunmer noble, who attended the Imperial Academy alongside myself. He had been showing interest in me for quite some time at that point, giving me sly signals. A wink here, a smile there. All until one day he asked to meet me on the bridge leading into the city. That evening, just as the sun began to dip below the horizon, I snuck out and made my way to our meeting spot. When I saw him, he was all dressed up in expensive finery. I too wore the best outfit that I managed to scrounge together. We stood looking out over the lake for a while, the bright orange of the sky reflecting on it's surface. An awkward silence hung between us that he soon broke by turning to me and placing a hand on my cheek. Under the dying light of day, we leaned in for our first kiss. I closed my eyes....only to have them immediately shoot back open in surprise as he clamped down on my muzzle and began to laugh. Soon several other voices joined in, chiding me for my foolish naivety. For how could one such as I, a lower class, a lower *being*...ever wish to be with my *better*? They cornered me against the side, taunts and threats thrown at my face before Giren took hold of my collar and shoved me backwards, nearly over the railing. I cried out and begged him to stop, but then whether he slipped or truly intended to drop me, I plummeted down into the dark waters below. I sank like a stone to the lake floor where I stared up at the two full moons shining down into the depths. I laid there for what felt like hours, more than once wishing that I could actually drown and thankful that the lake washed the tears that were surely flowing from my eyes. Eventually, I crawled out of the lake and back home -my clothes and more- ruined. I had learned a lesson that day. One not easily forgotten.
