Part 1

That following Monday brought Shun back to Renoir Hall for her first class. The crowd of students around her did not exist. She marched down the walkway at a brisk pace, white dress flowing around her shins, blowing past everybody else and leaving them in the dust. She bounded up the steps and through the front door. There was no table, staff, or coffee. Most importantly, there was no Ken. That didn’t perturb her one bit. She buzzed through physics class while sipping on a cup of piping hot coffee, a habit she had recently picked up on. This time, however, it wasn’t to keep Ken out of her mind. Quite the contrary. Every soft slurp of joe made sure his visage stayed branded in her consciousness.

The class ended and she blew through her remaining two classes. She didn’t see him anywhere. Out of options, she made a beeline for the security office after class. It was in a small building on the very edge of the campus. There was a parking lot for SUV’s and golf carts, each one with the school logo emblazoned on their facades. She walked right on through the front door and found a waiting room with a row of chairs on the wall. The wall in front of her had an opening where an anthro sea monster was sitting. They looked up from their desk and saw Shun stomp right up to them.

“Can I help you?” they asked, mildly alarmed by her sudden entry.

“Yes, you can,” she said. “Is Ken working today?”

The guard blinked. “You mean… The guard Ken?”

Shun nodded. “The very same. I want- um, need to talk to him.”

The guard didn’t hesitate. They walked into the back hall to fetch Ken. A few moments later he appeared through the door leading into the waiting room. He was dressed back in his simple green polo shirt, sporting a walkie talkie on his hip. His green eyes went wide at the sight of Shun. “Oh hey! Shun, What… What are you doing here?”

Her heart pounded away in her chest. Her tail flicked behind her maniacally. “Hey, Ken. I had a question to ask you.”

That alarmed him greatly. He turned and looked at the front desk. Fortunately his Lovecraftian coworker was gone, having assumed it was a personal affair. “OK. What is it?”

She ripped off the band aid. “Are you free sometime soon? This weekend maybe?”

The color drained from his face. He dropped his jaw to say something, but nothing came out. He double checked the front desk. Still empty. When he turned his face back to her it was wrought with panic. “Why are you asking me that?”

I think you know. “I wanted to spend time with you.” That was too direct. She corrected herself without missing a beat. “I wanted to apologize for putting you through all that trouble this weekend. Make it up for you.”

“Well… God, Shun, I…” He chuckled nervously. “I appreciate the gesture but I really don’t think that’s necessary.” He paused. “Or appropriate.”

“It doesn’t have to be like that. Not at all. Like I said. I just want to make it up to you.” She folded her hands in front of her legs. The tip of her tail wisped around her ankles innocently.

“Well you can make it up to me by just staying out of trouble! I was just doing my job!” He checked the front desk again, terrified that someone might be listening from behind the wall. “You don’t have to do anything.”

“Well…” Come on, ancestors, don’t let me down now. “I want to do something at least. Maybe make your life easier. I don’t know.” She looked up from the floor at him. “I still feel like I owe you for the coffee.”

His panic waned. It was like the incident with refilling the coffee was a sore spot for him as it was for her. If not sore, certainly sweet. For the last time he checked the front desk, this time peeking his head all the way through the wall. Confident nobody was there, he turned to her for the last time. “OK. Coffee. That’s it. We can meet at a coffee shop.” He held his finger up. “One cup. And then it’s done. Debt paid. Understand?”

As always the furry worm behind her betrayed her excitement. “Yes sir!”

He cringed. “Don’t… call me that. I’m Ken, remember?”

She closed her mouth into a wrinkly grin. “Yes. Sorry, Ken.”

He took a deep breath. “OK. I’m off on Friday.”

“Perfect!” she chirped, loudly enough for him to plant his finger over his lips. “I don’t have any classes then.”

“OK. Noon, then. The coffee shop on MacArthur. Got it?”

She bowed her head.

“OK. See you then.”

“Yup,” she said, beaming like a rainbow. “See you then.”

Friday could not have come more slowly, but when it finally did Shun was in hyperdrive. She took the bus to MacArthur street half an hour earlier than she was supposed to. She sat on one of the outside tables, all but bouncing in her seat as she waited for him to pop out of one of the many cars that were parking on the curb. At last she saw him zoom by, not in a security van but in a comically small smart car that he parallel parked right in front of her. She flashed him a toothy smile and waved. He smiled back, if less enthusiastically, and waved too. He got out of his undersized car, wearing a button up jacket and jeans. She stood up to greet him, fighting the urge to leap into his chest for a hug and thanking him for showing up.

Act natural. “Glad you made it.”

“Yeah, of course.” His eyes scanned the surrounding street for any familiar faces. “Wouldn’t flake out on you like that.”

“No, I didn’t think you would.”

The two wandered into the coffee shop. Fortunately it was not that busy, harboring just a handful of patrons and workers, none of whom Shun or Ken recognized. Shun strode up to the cashier, Ken trudging behind her slowly. She ordered an americano while Ken asked for a large cup of drip coffee. It came out to less than ten dollars, a fee Shun happily paid in full. After just a few minutes’ wait they both had their drinks in hand.

For Ken that was it. “Well, thank you for that. I think you made up for all of your trouble.” He raised his cardboard cup to her and made for the exit.

“You’re not going, are you?”

He stopped. “Yeah, I am, actually. I said just one cup and then the debt was paid, remember?”

“Well, yeah, but…” She looked over at a table next to the window. “At least sit down and drink it with me.”

Ken noticed that the cashier was watching them. He leaned his head back and blew out his lips. “Alright. Let’s have a seat.”

If it wasn’t for the steaming coffee in her hand she would’ve skipped her way to the table. “OK!”

They sat next to the window, not Ken’s first choice given the chance of being recognized. He tried to distract himself with his drink, as the cute girl in front of him had gotten so good at doing. He watched her guzzle her americano greedily. He snickered. “Sure got into the habit that quick, huh?”

She giggled. “You were right. I’m hooked.”

“I see that.” He sipped his coffee gingerly, a tad concerned by the level of fervor with which she drained hers.

“So, how long have you been a guardsman at school?”

“Well…” He looked around the shop and out the window. Not a single soul or monster cared about what was going on at their table. “Not long. In my second year here. Passed my certification just before then.”

“Neat. You said you went to college? Was it here?”

He laughed. “Oh God, no. I’m not that level of smart or rich. I went to Gaeroi Institute.”

“Oh. You said you dropped out.”

He sighed. “Yeah. Things just… Didn’t work out as they planned.”

“Yeah, I know how you feel.” Can I, though? Everything’s been handed to me on a platter my whole life, even this. She sipped her americano more gingerly now.

“What are you studying? What are you gonna do when you leave here?”

“Oh, well. Nothing in particular right now. Business, I guess. My dad was an investor. Made some pretty good investments, kind of helped me get here.” It was her first time confessing to someone about her luck.

“I see. You must be smart.”

She shrugged uncomfortably. “Not really. I mean, I’m not dumb, but you know… You said it yourself. I’m a luck deity. It helps a lot. It’s kind of all I have to get me the things I need in life, whether it’s school or-” meeting you “-other things.”

He looked sullen. “Sorry. I didn’t mean anything by it.”

She shook her head. “I know you didn’t. It’s just the way it is.” She drank her coffee. “I never have to really try to earn things. They just happen to me.”

He was silent for a moment. “Well, you sure earned bringing me here.”

She blinked. “What?”

“I mean this.” He gestured to the table. “You marched right into the security office and asked me on a date. That took some guts.”

She blushed hard upon the mention of the word “date.” “Well… I… I didn’t force…” She gulped. It seemed like the coffee steam was lighting up her face. “I prayed to my ancestors while I was doing that.”

“And I bet they helped in some way, but they didn’t force you in there, and trust me, they didn’t force me to agree either. That was something else.”

Her head tilted. “Like what?”

His friendly smile vanished at once. He had said too much. “Well…” He went back to checking to see if anyone was listening. No one was, but he still wasn’t comfortable enough. “It’s complicated.”

“Oh. You don’t have to tell me, then.”

For some reason he disagreed. “Do you wanna meet again sometime?”

That hit Shun like a truck. “What?”

“Do you want to do this again? Doesn’t have to be here. Any place. I’ll buy next time. No problem. If you want we can… We can meet at my place.”

Shun’s eyes were saucers. She was frozen in her chair, totally aghast. It was her turn to look around and check to see if anyone was listening. Finally she leaned forward in her chair and whispered. “I would love that.”

A relieved smile lightened his face. “Awesome. Thanks.”

She smiled too. “No problem.”

They met at the coffee shop once more after that, then a small bistro on the further side of town, then a few places neither of them really kept track of once they started really getting into the swing of things. All trepidation had been vanquished between the two of them. Conversations were no longer hushed. On one occasion they dared to hold hands on their way to a diner. Granted, this was waaaaay outside of campus, but was a huge step for them regardless.

It was an opportunity for Shun to act cheeky about it. “So, you want to make some money?”

“What?” Ken asked as they made their way down the busy sidewalk. He was on her left side, holding her clawed hand.

She swung their locked hands up. “You’re holding my left hand, leaving my right open.” She held up her right arm and hung her wrist limply. “When my right hand is free, whoever I’m with has good fortune in money. When my left is free, it’s fortune in customers. Maybe if you hold my left hand we’ll make new friends.”

“Oh… I didn’t know that. Um…” He looked down at their interlocked fingers. “Is this OK?”

She gave him a squeeze. “I think it’s perfect. I think I have enough people in my life, especially if I have you. Besides, I could make you the richest man in the world. Doesn’t that sound nice?”

It was Ken’s turn to be coy. “Maybe, but all that money would just be gold coins for a cat, would it not? I think there are some folk who need it more than I do. Giving it to me would be like pearls to a swine.”

Shun’s smile faded into a ruddy blush. He had recited a common proverb her family lived by, one that shunned frivolous allotment of their luck. It was emblazoned on their family crest, a gold coin motif to be held in either hand, depending on the owner’s priorities. Apparently he had done his homework. She wondered how long he had known.

It was Shun who recalled his proposition to have a date as his place. She brought it up on a whim while the two of them had lunch later that day. There was a brief moment of doubt for him. He knew the consequences of being caught. They would be far more severe than just being seen having lunch with her. It took some deliberation, but he finally came up with an answer. He said “Sure, let’s do it.”

He picked her up at noon at a location outside of campus. It was close to nighttime when fewer people would see the two of them together. They would have to have their date within the span of just a few hours before he would have to bring her back to the dorm. The more fanciful part of her waited for him to ask if she wanted to spend the night, but he never did, although she sensed a very large part of him wanted to ask her. Was such a thing a good idea? Probably not, but that didn’t stop her from looking for signs that he would ask.

His home was a short one story house about 20 minutes away from the campus. “Traffic’s alright now,” he said as they pulled into his driveway. “But in the morning it can be a real pain in the ass. Sometimes I leave before the sun’s even up to beat it.” It sounded like pointless banter for the purpose of avoiding silence. Shun couldn’t help but feel an elevated tension stretched inside of him. Something similar toiled inside of her as well.

They got out of his car and walked into his house. The place was clean, if very small. Shun figured that she was used to living and visiting sprawling abodes afforded by great wealth and status. This was much different, but oddly refreshing. It felt more intimate this way.

“It’s not much, but it’s home,” he said. “Those dorms they’ve got you living in are a helluva lot more accommodating. Then again you're paying way more for that than I am for this.”

She walked into his living room. There wasn’t much decorating it besides a couch, a TV, and a bookshelf with some family pictures on it. One of them was Ken with someone whom Shun assumed was his mother or grandma. “Oh no, this is fine.” Her eyes tracked up to the ceiling fan above. “I like it here.”

“Heh, thanks. So uh… Can I get you something to drink?”

She looked over her shoulder at him. “Think you can boil us up some coffee?”

“Oh, OK. Yeah, I can-”

She wheezed. “I’m kidding.”

“Oh, yeah. Hehe…”

“Just a water, please.”

“Gotcha.” He hustled to the kitchen and filled a glass with some ice and water from the fridge door. He grabbed a soda from inside and came back to give the water to her. “Here you go.”

“Thanks.” She took a sip, half-expecting to feel the singe of coffee on her lip, she was so used to it. Instead she got cool, crisp liquid, a much needed divergence. She looked around the living room. There weren’t many places to sit other than the small-looking couch. With nowhere else to go, she stood in front of it, flipped her dress out behind her, and took a seat on the soft cushion.

Ken sat next to her. The couch was only two cushions wide, forcing them into close proximity. Their knees hovered next to each other. Shun could feel the weight of his body sinking into the couch. “You wanna… watch TV?” he asked.

“Sure!”

“Yeah! OK!” He sounded like some lingering fear of his had been assuaged. He fished the remote out from the crack of the sofa, dangerously hovering the back of his wrist next to her thigh, something they were both deeply conscious of. He turned on the TV. A sports channel was on. “You like sports?”

“Not really.”

“Yeah, me neither. You’d watch it if it was beer pong, right?” he joked.

She shrugged. “Probably.”

“R-right.”

He flipped the channel and asked if this was what she wanted to watch. The answer was either a shrug or a flat out “no”. They spent the next few minutes repeating that ritual, both of them praying that something of great interest would come on. Shun felt bad for making things feel so awkward. There was really nothing to watch, and all she wanted to do was talk with him. If only the couch didn’t make facing him so difficult.

“You can turn it off,” she said finally. “I just wanna talk.”

“Yeah, you’re right.” He lowered the volume and let it play in case she changed her mind. “Sorry.”

“No no no! Don’t be. It’s not your fault nothing’s on.”

“Nah, I guess you’re right.” He tucked the remote back into its nook. “To be honest, it’s been a while since I’ve had a girl over, if that isn’t obvious enough.”

“Well, if it’s any consolation I sure haven’t been over to a boy’s place in a while either. I’m glad it’s yours.”

He laughed. “Likewise.”

“You know, there’s been something I’ve wanted to ask you.”

“Go for it.”

“The first date we went on, at the coffee shop, you said me praying to my ancestors didn’t force you to agree to getting coffee with me. You said something else did.” She tilted her head. “What was it?”

His expression turned flat. “Oh yeah, that.” He drank some of his soda. “Well, I wasn’t forced by anything, but I had been thinking a lot about something at that point. I still am.”

“What is it?”

He sighed. “That first day when I helped you with the coffee. It’s been on my mind a lot.”

Shun’s ears stood upright at attention. “Really?”

“Yeah. I know it sounds stupid, but-”

“No, no, it doesn’t. I… I was thinking a lot about you after that too.”

His eyebrows lifted. “Yeah?”

“Yeah. I know it really wasn’t a lot that you did, but for me it was kind of huge.” She looked down at the glass of water she held in her lap. Droplets of condensation fell down to its base, wetting some of her dress. “I was super nervous that day, like you wouldn’t believe. I felt so out of place and small. I told you about how I pretty much lucked into this place. That’s what was bugging me so badly at the time. Just standing in line for some coffee, something I didn’t even drink by the way, felt so wrong. When the dispenser turned out empty and I was standing in front of it like an idiot, I felt so alone.” She scoffed and touched her fingers to a lock of hair. “Then you came up. You scared me at first. I thought I was in trouble, like my worst fear was happening in front of me. But it wasn’t. You were just trying to help.” She looked up from her glass and saw him hanging on her every word. “I know how silly it sounds, but in a way, you kind of saved me.”

She braced for a scoff, or a snicker, or any kind of snide remark. He did no such thing. His expression did not change. He instead fixed his gaze into the black hole in the top of his soda can. “Yeah, I felt the same way, kind of.”

Whatever she expected him to say, it wasn’t that.

“I saw you walk in looking like you were nervous,” he continued. “I didn’t think much of you at first. It wasn’t until you tried to get Mr. Naka’s attention that I noticed you again. You looked…” He sighed and rubbed his temples with his fingers. “I know this sounds bad, but you looked kind of scared.” This time he did scoff. “I don’t know why. You weren’t in trouble, clearly. It was just an empty thing of coffee. I told myself, ‘Don’t worry about her. She’s got it.’ But then Naka wouldn’t pay any attention to you. You just stood there, looking lost. More of me was screaming to get up and help, but also that it wasn’t worth my time. I don’t know why. It was like helping you was somehow both a huge deal and literally nothing at all. I guess the latter makes more sense, but… I don’t know.”

He rested his mouth in his palm with his elbow propped up on his knee. It took him a while to start talking again. “You were in my mind a lot after that. Couldn’t stop thinking about you. I would’ve done it for anyone else, but doing it for you was somehow special, and the reason that is, I think…” His eyes tracked over to her. Her breath was caught in her lungs, waiting for him to finish. “It was because you were so pretty.”

His confession was a mirror of her own, one that did not surprise or offend her. But the climax of it fell on her like a meteor, robbing her of whatever breath she still held on to. Mustering the rest of what she needed to say was a colossal effort, one that seemed impossible under the weight of his eyes staring into her soul. But she didn’t need effort. Luck was on her side.

“And I think the reason I was thinking about you so much was because… because you were so handsome.”

Just the faintest movement of his mien. “Really?”

She answered him by closing the gap between them in a single scoot. She pulled her face up to his, puckered her lips, and kissed his scratchy cheek. “Really.”

For a moment they stared into each other’s eyes, marveling for what had to be the millionth time their splendid irides. It stopped once their eyes closed for a mouth-to-mouth kiss. Both of them came into it. Shun pressed her diminutive frame into him, mushing her breast into his muscular shoulder. His lips were rough with facial hair. Hers were soft like clouds. His hands, wiry with muscle and sinew, grabbed hold of her trunk and lifted her into his lap. She swaddled herself in his embrace while coiling her arms around his neck. She laid her torso flat against his. Her cattail performed gymnastics through the air. She felt the manly scrape of his jeans and jacket. The tightness of his hug was at the perfect degree of firmness. Throbbing beneath her was a solid log of manhood, bulging upwards and demanding release.

She would give it to him in time, but for now they kissed. The sound of their lips smacking echoed through the living room. Her dress whispered against the upwards drift of his hand to her upper back. She clawed at his chest, loving how solid it felt, refusing to give way beneath even her most ardent presses. One of his hands ventured south. Her muscles tensed all the way up to the moment he palmed her buttock. She jerked, then went lax. A thankful murr cooed into his mouth. She got a deeper, more masculine one in return.

The jut of his penis became impossible to ignore. It intensified what had already been an exigent ache within her loins. Now she felt herself grinding on him, inadvertently teasing the both of them. He frowned and huffed through his nose. The first whimper eked through her nose. Only after an entire minute of more ardent kissing and grinding did he force her face off of his.

They both gasped and sighed. A shudder rolled through her, melting her in his lap. “God… Ken…” she huffed.

He opened his eyes. Her nipples bled through her bra and dress. The heat of her flower poured across his crotch, demanding union with his flesh. “Shun.” She opened her eyes. “Do you… wanna…”

It was a stupid question. “Yes. I do.”

“OK,” he huffed. “OK. Here?”

She looked around. “No. Your bed.”

“Alright.” He pulled her back into his chest and held onto her. When he stood up she instinctively locked her legs around his midriff. He walked her to his bedroom. She felt like a feather on the wind. He was so strong. The house flowed past her until they made it to his bedroom. He gingerly sat her on his bed. He stepped back and started taking his clothes off. She followed suit.

She was nude on the bed with him standing nearby. They gazed at their natures, drinking in every bit with insatiable greed. He loved the fair glow of her skin, her dainty legs, the ample swell of her buttocks, the feline grace with which her tail swept behind her. Her rosy pink nipples remained stiff in the breeze of the ceiling fan. Her flower bled forth a glimmering sheen of arousal between her thighs.

Equal attention was spared on his body. His trunk was a landscape of rigid muscle and black hair. A neat row of abs blossomed into a solid chest and expansive shoulders. A V shaped notch pointed down into his wiry black thatch, beneath which swayed his pompous breeding tool. It was already at half-mast, inching its way towards a sumptuous length and wholesomeness.

She invited him to the bed. He accepted. He mounted between her legs, laying that hot pillar of meat upon her trembling slit. They kissed before joining eyes once again. Wordlessly she took hold of his member and teased it into her cunt. Her thighs shuddered. His hips pulled back. Without a word he asked her, do you want it?

Yes, yes she did.

He went forward. Flesh collided in full. She swooned as her chalice was laid claim to, every inch of it. She clung to him to the hilt. So much, so tight. A doleful sigh escaped them both. His body was like a leaden blanket of warm flesh and itchy hairs. She clung to it for all it was worth. His hips came up, then back down, completing the first thrust. Her toes touched each other on his lower back. She laid her chin on his beefy shoulder and said his name past his ear. It enticed more thrusting, each one delivered by a decisive clench of his glutes.

They spoke their bodily feelings, free of any anxiety or regret. Kisses were shared, blindly landing around their faces and mouths. He buried his face into the soft of her neck and nibbled her, drawing out a very sincere cry of delight. They locked hands together and laced fingers. With every plunge of his cock came a mutual squeeze. She chanted his name. He grunted hers. With building pleasures their coherence coagulated into something more dramatic. They came together, slamming their ecstasies head long and blessing the sheets with their fluids.

They lay entwined, panting hard. He gave her a few clumsy kisses before retreating from her quim. He rolled over onto his back next to her, panting hard. She squirmed within a blanket of bliss. His molten warmth bled from her slit, down her flesh and onto the sheet below. A tiny whiff revealed how badly she smelled of him. That was good. Very good. She rolled onto her side to face him. Her limbs clung to his heaving torso so that she could plant a tiny smooch on his jaw. She brought her lips to his ear and whispered. “I love you.”

With the last pant he smiled. “I love you too.”

It was like they fell asleep together, unwilling to have it any other way.
