Thomas's hunch better be right
Owen and Kyle had gone missing about 24 hours when they were last seen, and with the leader of the boxing club and the drama club being popular in the spotlight of the school naturally people being confused about their disappearances. Thomas was growing a bit suspicious, and his suspicion was that the two were magic users and did not know it and were kidnapped likely by the magic monsters the team faces or perhaps a boss from the citadel. So later on at night Thomas was preparing his mini-heist to leave the house and to the citadel.
