Finding Ones Place, pt 3
As we stepped out we found ourselves sweating instantly from the searing heat that attempted to fry us on the pavement.
"So how did it go?" Shadow asked with an impatient grin as we climbed into my car.
"You know the usual. He thought I looked like trash and is completely discusted with dragon and says he'll never hire one as long as he lives." I say as I put the key in the ignition in an attempt to get the AC on.
"So your sayin you got the job, sweet. I told you you had it in the bag." Shadow said from the passenger seat with a smug grin on his face showing of his sharp white teeth.
"Yes well its just a job."
"To you maybe. Gosh don't you ever get excited about anything?" with a hint of disappointment in his glance.
"Sure I do."
"Like what might I ask...AND don't say its when I get out of the car!"
I try to stiffle a smile as we pull out and head down the road.
The drive home was uneventful while I focused on the road and Shadow intently studied his rentals in an attempt to distinguish which movie we would begin with.
Upon pulling into the spot for my apartment Shadow practically jumped out and made a break for the stairs like his rear was on fire.
With a slight look of bewilderment I get out and head for the stairs in my usually slow casual way just in time to see him close the door to my apartment.
Being practically brothers we each have a key to the others place though at times like these I tend to regret it.
I stroll up the stairs and approach the door with a slight apprehenstion. Opening it slowly half expecting a bucket of water to come flying at my head, I ease my way into the apartment.
Its dark aside from what little light that worms its way through my thick curtains leading to the balcony and the light spilling into the apartment from the open door. I slip inside and silently close the door behind me and carfully make my way out of the entryway, past the hall to my room, and past the kitchen towards the living room.
Having an unfair advantage of having such dark scales its practically impossible to tell where Shadow might be lurking. Though my scales being a much lighter color reflect what little light there is my black close still give me an air of invisibility.
Glancing around the living room there still appears to be no sound or rush of movement so I proceed forward attaching myself to the wall and slowly make my way to the conner leading to the bathroom and the spair bedroom.
I carefully glance down the conner and stare down the hall but still no trace of Shadow. After giving the area a quick look that only leaves me with a few options.
"A : He went into my room which I'm sure even he is far from that foolish since I allow no one into my room.
B : He is in the bathroom.
C : He is in the spare bedroom. Or
D: He went out onto the balcony."
As I gance around me I try to form a plan of action. I could either pretend like its nothing flip on all the lights and try to flush him out, I can lie and wait for him to make his move and hope I don't regret it, or I can keep going and walk straight into whatever ghastly plan he has concocked for me.
None of these plans sound all that appealing so I go with choice number for. I ensure that his plan backfires.
With only the slight possibility that he can see me from wherever he has stationed myself I move quick and as silently as I can. I'll have to first find a place to hide near the door....broom closet. Next I have to draw him out....open and slam the door. Finally figure out what shall await him upon revealing himself in an attempt to 'follow me out the door'....water gun to the face which I always keep filled and just inside my door for such emergencies.
I silently make my way back along the wall toward the small hall that holds my bed room door by the entrace and carefully open the door so as not to make any noise.
I find the water gun in its usual place and silently close the door back and then open the broom closet that shares the small hall with my room. Ensuring that it is ready for a hasty entrance I step over to the front door and ready myself.
Suddenly the room is filled with light from the hastily opened door and after I hold it open for a minute I slam it closed and silently but swiftly dart into the closet leaving just the smallest of cracks for me to see through.
As I wait for what feels like an eternity with my muslces stiff and poised to strike I have just long enough to feel stupid when I hear a door open from somewhere towards the living room and suddenly the light goes on in there.
I hold my breath not wanting to make even the slightest sound that could give away my position and then I hear his footsteps coming towards the me and I can make out the faintest mumbles about how I have absolutly no sense of humor.
I catch a glance of his scales as he is just upon the entrace to the small hall on his way to the front door and then it happens.
I burst forth from my hiding place in a blazing flash and in one swift motion I find myself standing between Shadow and the door as I pull the trigger and hear him shout as an explostion of water errupts from the barrell of my water gun.
My eyes are watering from laughing so hard as I continue firing and through open the front door in an attempt to escape before I run out of water. Just as the spay ends I drop the gun and leap over the railing extending my wings to lightly and gracefully land on my feet and imediatly take off at a dead run as fast as I can as I hear him shouting from behind me in a slur of threats that I am most assured that he will carry out should he get his claws on me so I simply run and run laughing all the way with the sound of rushing footsteps behind me.
