My take on last week's writing prompt for the writing corner. This time the prompt "Are business deals supposed to be this life-or-death?" and I could think of a better way to do so than to explore the depths of violence that is Shadowrun, in this case I decided to use one of my settings, Caracas 2080. I hope you enjoy this tale, remember to leave your thoughts below. Recoil looked around the empty room, the gray cement walls littered in bullet holes and a thick smell of death clung to every surface, but she would have to bear it, her task couldn’t wait any longer. She set the black case she was carrying on the ground, the heavy plastic case almost as tall as she was and twice as heavy. With a flick of her fingers she released the safeties, a click echoing through the desolate room; the case parted without issues, revealing an assortment of dark metallic parts , each carefully held in their own plush compartment. To the untrained eye, there was no sense or purpose behind the pieces, it was just some fancy collection of junk but that wasn’t the case for Recoil; with almost religious reverence the brown skinned elf hands got to work, picking up and combining the parts with effortless grace; her brows furrowed in concentration until, with one last click, her precious rifle rested in her lap. Her critical eye gave her work a once over, her hands explored the familiar smooth surfaces for any imperfection but she found none.

A smile came to her face as she took the rifle to the farthest window, a soft tune in her lips; she knelt before the window and with a single flick of a button, a thin wire escaped from the rifle. Recoil grabbed the cable with tender care and connected the end to the back of her neck, the terminal accepting the link with a low beep. A current of electricity ran down her back, her head shook twice, a common after effect of her connection, but soon she felt the low hum at the back of the head that came from her rifle. With steel like discipline, she ran through the diagnostics: first, she checked the rifle’s connection, the live data transference graphics appeared in front of her eyes like a ghost, the blue and green figures floating in front of her before she dismissed them with a nod. Then she checked the ammunition, shifting through the different types until she was certain there was nothing wrong with the mechanism. The trigger came next, a swift diagnostics and some test runs assured her that it was all green. Last, but not least, came the scope. Recoil placed the end of the rifle over her shoulder while the muzzle came to rest on the window sill, one blink was enough for four legs to come out of the rifle, the mechanical limbs soon adjusted to the rough surface and stabilized the rifle. Recoil closed her eyes next and with a thought overlaid her own sight with that of the rifle.

A crystal clear image appeared in front of her, a small triangular plaza in the middle of three buildings, a few worn down marble statues stood proud all over the place, good covers against ground fire, but useless against her rifle. She blinked twice and the scene changed, the rifle zooming in on her target. Now, she could see a few dozens persons power walked around the plaza, their bodies clad in expensive suits and designer dresses. Recoil scanned the area three times before she was satisfied, she had found six guards on the perimeter and was sure another nine were waiting for trouble to arise before they came out. It was all as they had expected.

Recoil lifted a hand to her ear, pressing the hidden button on her earring. A new screen appeared in her vision, besides the image of the plaza. A few seconds passed with the screen blank, before white letters ran across the screen.

“Are you in position?” asked Dandelion, her leader.

“Yes. No signs of Mr. Perez, are you sure this is the right place?” she said, her words appearing on the screen moments after.

“Yes, this is it, the Terrazas Trifecta, 2:00pm. Keep an eye out.”

With those last words, the chat closed and Recoil turned her attention at the plaza, where a dark skinned human wearing blue and black suit had just appeared. The man walked with firm steps towards the center of the plaza, a metal suitcase clutched in one hand while the other held something to his ear. She looked around the man, noticing two burly orcs clad in identical black suit following close behind; Recoil shifted the panned the camera around the plaza, her nerves had started to burn a hole in her stomach, something wasn’t right. She looked around once more and pinpointed a strange pair sitting together on a bench close to the meeting point. One was a human, his gray hair, night black suit and pale skin made him seem old, but his posture was firm, too firm, at his side a blue haired dwarf patted her dark blue dress with nervous energy. Recoil bit her lips, her stomach burned something fierce; She would have to scold Dandelion later but for the time being she focused on her job. It was a matter of seconds to find her target once more, the human had just arrived to the center of the plaza and stood alone and motionless in the sea of people. Bright red hair, dark skin and a metallic suitcase, it fit the description to a T and for some reason, that sent shivers down her spine

She opened the chat once more and mentally flicked through the tabs until she reached the proper channel.

“Mr. Perez has arrived, he’s at the delivery point.” She send the message, followed seconds later by a picture of the human. “He has brought company, I see four of them, maybe more. Expect heavy resistance if Corp Sec joins in. I got a bad feeling about it.”

“Copy that, moving in.” replied Dandelion, the bronze skinned human popped up on her sights moments later, clad in a stylish if practical dark blue suit, a black suitcase hanging from one of his hands. On her chat, a new image appeared on her screen, one of a big eyeball with a fedora on top.

“Got eyes on them all, standing by.” was the message beholder sent her before dozens of images popped up in her mind, each one showcased a single person, the edges of their weapons showing in their tight suits.

“Copy that.” was all she typed before she minimized the chat into a small globe.

Recoil focused on the plaza once more, her rifle following Dandelion as he made his way to their target. Her finger inches away from the trigger, just in case it all went down in flames. Dandelion and Mr. Perez met seconds later, Recoil couldn’t hear what they were saying but based on their expressions, things were moving along smoothly. Dandelion had just deposited his suitcase on the ground when the nerves upped their game, her stomach burned. Red flashed on the top of her sights, the chat’s orb blinked twice before single message appeared on my screen.

“Incoming hostiles, south west.” I didn’t have time to act though, a burst of red painted Dandelion’s face as Mr. Perez crumpled to the ground. Dandelion hit the ground in the next second, part of the statue behind him exploding moments later. The plaza became a flurry of activity then, people ran all over the place and crashed against each other, some were trampled, others fell as pools of red painted the floor. Recoil bit her lip and let her finger touch the trigger while she searched for the assailants.

Her search was rewarded, when she found two humans taking cover behind one of the small walls; each barrage pointed out by flash of whites that painted the muzzles of their semiautomatics. Recoil needed no more information to act, she lined her shot, took a deep breath and pulled the trigger. Her rifle hit her shoulder in confirmation, most of the recoil consumed by the artificial limbs. The first Corp Sec fell just like that, red seeping from his destroyed throat. Their partner turned in surprise, huddling behind the walk as she crawled towards her first target. They were joined with another pull of the trigger.

More alerts came from the orb, the new messages giving her the positions of their opposition, just for a pull of her trigger to end their lives. She was safe in her lookout, enough traps set out just in case but still she worried, not about her, about her leader. She hadn’t head of Dandalion since it all went to hell, the cheeky human had been swallowed by the chaotic mass of people shortly after this all started. his dark suit nowhere to be seen, and yet she trusted that Dandalion to make it out alive, that Beholder getting him out of there. So she just focused on aiming and shooting.

Recoil couldn’t tell how long had passed before the orb blink once more, a new message unfolding before her.

“Corner of Damian’s Pizza and Codelocked. 30 mins” read Beholder’s message, not a word about Dandalion. Recoil swallowed her worries and disconnected herself from the rifle, she would have to hurry to make it in time. A few minutes later and one frantic run, had gotten Recoil to the agreed place with only seconds to spare. The elf was breathing heavily and cursing her cyborg friend. A dark gray van stopped in from of her, the passenger door opened with a hiss seconds later to reveal a tall wiry troll, with grayish bits of rock covering his arms up, a thin wire connected to his neck, just like the one she often use with her rifle. His artificial blue eyes stared at her, the black pupil widening and narrowing until a forced smile came to his scarred face.

“Business is never easy with you guys.” he said with a grating voice as I climbed up, the alcohol and oil reaching my nose. “At least this time we won’t be visiting Doc or the bar.”
