Detective Clip, Jackalope of the law, embarks on a surprise inspection.
~ The front office's ceiling was a flickering symphony of several different temperatures of white light, the lamps consisting of whatever was cheapest when their predecessors had burned out. No one in the facility paid too much heed to the appearances of the mining operation's front office, most of the budget for infrastructure held for such matters as maintaining atmosphere and crew luxuries like bunks for sleeping and air for breathing.
~ Whichever working hand had been sent to greet the arrival of Detective Clip was less than well prepared for her inquiries, though the binder of flowcharts was guiding him through the process well enough.
~ The Detective explained, "This is a surprise inspection; that's why I didn't call ahead. And that's why I can't come back tomorrow.", flipping through several pages of her own binder, "Now, I need see the maintenance schematics for levels seven through fifteen."
~ After a bit of rummaging through a drawer full of datacarts and old pens, the mine worker located a clipboard of papers with the previous week's date scribbled across the top page, "Here you go..", tossing it over onto the terminal-desk where Clip stood.
~ While the squirrel shuffled in place anxiously, Detective Clip flipped through the pages of the inspection reports across the levels and junctures, paying particular attention to the signatures.
~ After a couple moments of back and forth between two of the pages, the jackalope inquired, "So.. Frenk isn't a very tall fellow, eh? It's like he's the only one who can fit into the lower induct cabin."
~ This placed the worker at ease a bit, "Yeah... yeah, he's the smaller of the fatigue experts. Jerald's far too tall to get into that lower one."
~ The jackalope's ears perked as she delicately placed a finger down on one of the distribution nodes on the ninth level, "Here. This induct cabin was inspected at the same time as the eastern one; but Frenk signed for the other one..", her gaze rising to the squirrel with a wry smile, "..and there's no signature from a fatigue expert. I take it that Jerald forgot to sign for the inspection he completed properly?"
~ The squirrel's ears pinned back, "Uh.. uh... yeah... he's sometimes forgetting to sign..", a bit of panic slowly rising as his fur began to fluff.
~ The jackalope stood a bit more upright, "Well, I need to see his signature there...", checking her watch, "...before the end of this week. So no rush, but I can't leave until until I do."
~ The squirrel nodded slowly, slinking over to punch up a comms link out to the mines, "Hey, Jerald, could you come up to the welcome room?"
~ As she tolerated the delay, Detective Clip leaned back in a stretch and yawn, quietly tucking her hand underneath the piece of flexplate armor on her back as she did so.
~ In short order, a moutain of a polar bear staggered up from the mines and into the office, "Eh? I need to sign something, Frenk said?"
~ With a sweet smile and nod, Clip clarifed, "Yes, please.", stepping back from the table and side stepping around the approach of the exhausted bear.
~ "Right there, where you did the inspection of...", the jackalope giving up the ruse once she had the mine's entrance to her back and no clear line of escape for mass of white fur, exhaustion, and grime.
~ Pulling out the stun pistol from behind her back, she brought it to bear upon her quarry, "You're under arrest, Jerald of the Swarm.", the squirrel backing up to a wall with a yelp.
