This is my first story, so I have a feeling that there is going to be room for improvements. If enough of you like it and I get enough positive feedback, I just might make a series out of it. So hope you enjoy. Oh one more thing, I am dyslexic, so if I use one word instead of another please forgive me.

The Case

It had almost been two weeks since the accident; he had been working late on a case that he was trying to break. It was about one in the morning when he was driving home. Brian was just thinking about how happy he'd be when he finally would be able to spend some time with his mate.

Brian was a little larger than your average timber wolf, but not by much he was six feet, five inches. Good build, very well defined muscles. His fur light brown with a few thin black streaks running across the base of his neck. He always wear jeans and t-shirts the catch phrases. To top it off he always wore some sort of boots. So by no means was his dress office exceplibale, but he got away with it because he was a good detective.

He was t-boned by a drunk that ran a red light. The doctors thought that he wouldn't make it do to his injuries. Justin spent almost a week at the hospital after it first happened.

Now Justin was your average fox. Bright orange fur, white under belly and a black ring down towards the end of his tail. And the very end of his tail white. But he loved his mate to no end. One of the reasons that they fell in love. Brian was the tough guy of the two and Justin was the quiet and cuddly one of the two. They almost dressed alike, jeans and shirts. But Justin wear skater shoes, not wanting to look to cute.

"How honey, how you doing today?"

"Well, I'm still here, and it doesn't look like their ready to let me go home yet. But at least I seem to be making some head way on this case." Brian said as he closed one of the files he had been reading and looked up at his mate. "Did you get chinies?" he asked as he looked at John, then quickly at the bag that he was carrying.

"How'd you..." Justin started to say, but was quickly cut off but the wolf lying in the bed.

"I may not be down at the station working, but that doesn't mean that I'm not a detective anymore." He said smiling, and then pointed at the bag. "Plus it has the logo of that chine's chain that I love, along with most everyone else"

"I hate it when you do that." Justin said with a smile. Then pulling up a chair and started to pull the two food containers out. "Hum, let's see, this is yours." He says as he puts it in the spot the Brian cleared of paper work.

They started to eat their lunch and enjoy each other's company when Frank came in. "Hey Frankie, what do you have for me."

"You know Brian, the guys at the station won't think any less of you if you don't work on this case while you're in here." Frank said as he walked in. "Plus you need to take a break from it."

"Frank, just because I'm laid up, doesn't mean that crimes aren't taking place. Plus we need to get these assholes off the street. They'll tear this city apart with their stupid little gang wars of who can bring in the most illegal guns and drugs. So what do you have for me?"

Justin gave Brian a look of announce for yet again not taking advice form about the twelfth person to try and tell him to relax while he was recouping.

"Well you should be happy to know that we found someone willing to talk about it, the next big shipment that's going to be coming in. Who's buying, who's going to be there, time, place. All the things you want to know Brian." Frank said sensing that Justin didn't agree with Brian working on the case as well when he was still in the hospital.

"Thanks Frank. Do we have his name?"

"Uh no, that was part of his coming to us. He wouldn't have to give us his name. But he did say that we could call him Bobby."

"Well I guess you can't get everything you want. But I want the interview done here. I don't want the chance of you guys trying to keep any of the info from me." Brian said.

Frank had already started to walk out and yelled back, "You're one hell of a hard working bastard."

Brian just smiled and started to eat his lunch again, then look over at Justin. "What? Oh is it because I'm still working on the case?"

"Bri, this case is going to kill you. I mean, every day you look like you only have had maybe an hour sleep, maybe even less. And that was before the accident. Now that you're in the hospital you seem to think that means that you can work through the night, and not have to sleep. And yes I've talked to the nurses and they've all seen you up all night working on the case, and then when I come in to see you. You're still awake; you have a whole team of guys working this case with you, and why not let them do it while you recover."

"Justin, these guys are uncaring assholes who don't care who their merchandise kills." Brian pulls a file out of the huge stake of files that he had brought down so he could still work on the case. "Casey, 10 years old, gunned down outside her home by a gun in a drive by that this group is putting out on the streets." He said as he tossed it at John, "Now what if that was your cousin, or something? Then what, would you still tell me let the guys deal with it, or would you tell me to find the people that did this and do something about it?"

Justin didn't bother opening the file, because he already knew what it was going to be. The crime scene photos, the autopsy report, and all the things he knew would ruin his lunch. That was one thing he never under stood about Brian could always eat while watching an autopsy, working a horrific crime scene, and that one time they went on a cruise and the ship was all over the place.

"I know why you're doing it, but it's not your job right now. Your job right now is to get to better."

Brian sighed and started to eat his lunch again. The two of them eat in silence for a few minutes. "Ok, what if I take some time off after completing this case? And actually spend some time with you, no work." But he knew even taking time off he would never stop thinking about the next case. He never would unless he left the force; he was doomed to always be thinking about work as long as he was working on the force. He almost thought it a curse.

Justin looked at him, "I know that look, you'll never stop thinking and breathing that job so long as you live. Will ever stop thinking about it?"

"I'm sorry honey, I just..." He couldn't formulate the words. "It's gotten into my blood, once I get started on a case I just want another and then another. I guess it's because of the way that I was brought up. My dad was a cop and all, so I feel the need to do it and try and out do him. Sure he can pull a few strings and probably get me a job working something less stressful and all that but I don't want that. You know how I am, I love challenges." Brian said smiling softly.

"Yes I knew that after we first met, and that's why I like you. Once you get your mind set on something, it's very hard to get you away from it. I also knew that you'd be working long hours and end up leaving in the middle of the night. But did that stop me from wanting to be your mate. No, I wanted to be with you and stay with you. But I can't do that when you keep pushing me away." Justin said as he looked lovingly at his mate.

Just then a nurse came walking in. "Ok Brian, looks like you get to go home. But unfortunately it looks like you're always going to be with a limp in the left leg. You sustained so much damage from the crash that you'll never make a full recovery from it." She said filling out the last of the discharge papers.

"Damn, I made it to using a cane before my dad, looks like he loses that bet." He says with a smile.

Justin smiled, "Well it could be worse, you could be stuck in a chair, and never be able to walk again."

A few minutes the two were on their way home. Brain sat looking out the window, thinking about the past events. He sighed, "Can we stop by the store? I want to pick some things up."

"Are you sure you don't want to go home first and let me come back and get the stuff that you need?" Justin asked, looking over at his mate, not wanting him to overdo it his first day out of the hospital.

"Yeah, I'll be fine. Don't worry about it I'm a big boy." He said smiling at his mate. Looking out the window again, he took a deep breath and closed his eyes before speaking again. "How would you feel about me leaving the force?"

Justin was quite for almost a minute, not sure whether or not he heard his mate right.

"Well, yes or no? It's pretty simple yes or no answer." Brain said, needing answer form his mate.

"Well is it something that you really want, or are you doing it for me?" Justin asked, hoping that he was doing it for a mix of both, he wanted more time with his mate. But he also wanted his mate to be happy, and no one is happy doing something that they don't like. "If you're doing it because of me then don't do it. But if you're doing it because to want to then by all means do hone."

"Well in short, yes I have been thinking about it for some time now. I've spent almost my whole life on the force and I don't know if I can keep doing it. The nights that I do come and sleep you know that I don't sleep the whole night though. Simply because of things that I have seen and done, one could argue that under the secrimstance I did the right thing. But I still feel horrible about what I did. Plus it would be unfair to you if I stayed on the force. I'll give them my notice that once I'm done with the case I'm retiring." They pulled into the parking lot of the store and found a parking spot. "Oh and I won't work on it to night, sound good hone?"

"That sounds great hone, but if I could only remember how many times you've said that and then started working on it only an hour or so after you said you wouldn't." Justin said, looking at Brain with a look of slight announce.

"But I really mean it this time." He said, and gave the fox a kiss on the cheek. Opening the door he slowly got out, "I'll be right back."

"No you won't." Justin said with a smile, knowing that it would take the big wolf a while with his injured leg. "You only one good leg and you're still getting used to using the cane. So don't give me this I'll be right back."

"Ok, maybe a couple minutes, but I'll be back." He said over his shoulder as he hobbled into the store.

About ten minutes later he came back out with two bags in his right paw and the cane in the other. Putting the bags in the back seat he got in the front. "Ok love, let's go home." He said smiling at his mate. He wanted to make up for the time lost while he worked long hours on the force.

"So what you get?" Justin asked, wanting to know what his mate had on his mind and had gotten.

"Well if I tell you it won't be a surprise." He said smiling.

"Fine be mystery, see if I care." The fox said as he pulled out of the parking lot with a smile on his face.

A few minutes later they where home. They got out of the car and Justin went to get the bags, but Brian quickly took them from his paws. "No cheating, you're just going to have to wait for it."

"Fine, can I at least get the door for the old man." He said smiling taking a cheap shot at his mate.

"Yes, younger wiper snappers like you should always show respect to their elders." Brian said and then gave the fox a kiss on the check.

The two of them walked to the door and went inside. Once inside Brian made his way to the kitchen and put the bags into the fridge. Then went up stairs to take a shower. It had been a while since he had a real bath. Sponge baths just wore not that good. It almost took his thirty minutes to take the shower. It was hard getting in and out of the shower with the injured leg. But a hat shower helped relax it a little. Once he was done he wrapped a towel around his waist, and went to their bed room and got into some sweats and t-shirt, then went back down stairs. And this was going to take some getting used to with his bad leg. Once he got down stairs he found Justin in the living room looking at their movie collection.

"Hey honey, thought we could watch a movie before dinner." Justin said as he looked back at his mate.

"I don't know..." Then he stopped, he knew what he was going to say next. But he knew his mate was going to be upset with him if he would say it. So he decided to bit the bullet and agree to do it. "Sure honey, what did you have in mind?"

Justin was relieved that Brian didn't try and get out of it and try and work on the case even though he tried he started to. "I was thinking maybe a comedy. How about Caddyshack?"

Brian smiled, he hadn't seen that movie in years, and "Sure, go ahead get everything started up and I'll get the popcorn." With that Brian went to the kitchen and put a bag in the microwave. Before too long everything was ready and they sat down next to each other and started the movie.

Before he knew it, Brian was actually enjoying not having to think about work and spending time with his mate. Then he felt Justin's head lay on his shoulder. He had only heard about it and seen it in movies when he was a pup, but to have it actually happen to him. Well it was something new, and he liked it.

As for Justin, he was so relieved that Brain decided to not work and actually spend time with the one he loved. But even then Justin had questions about what Brian really loved. Did he love the force that left him hating society, the ones the he took an oath to protect? Or did he just hate being on the force and felt that it was the only thing that he'd be good at?

Once the movie was over they were ready to have dinner. Justin got up and headed to the kitchen. "What do we want for dinner tonight? I'm sure that anything will do seeing as hospitals aren't known for their outstanding food." Justin said with a smile.

"Oh no you don't, I've got something planed for us to night." Brian said as he got up slowly, and went as fast as he could go. Catching up to the fox as he opened the fridge and looked inside as to see what they could have.

Coming up behind him, he grabbed Justin's rump, giving it a little squeeze as he gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. "Go on get, I got this. Go set the table or something." He said jokingly not wanting the fox to see what he was going to make for dinner.

With a soft playful yelp as he felt Brian squeeze his behind, he turned and nuzzled him softly. "Ok Chef Brian. But remember, don't burn anything, and essptially don't burn the house down."

"I may have spent every waking hour in the office, but that doesn't mean I have forgotten how to cook. Now get so I can get to work." Brian said as he reached paced his mate and took the bag that he had put in the fridge and went the counter.

With that Justin closed the refrigerator door with a smile and went into the other room and started to set the table and then start reading the book that he was reading when he was at the hospital with Brian out from all the pain killers that he had been give after he had be stabilized after being brought into the hospital.

It wasn't long before the sweet smell of well seasoned meant cooking was coming from the kitchen. Justin quickly finished the chapter that he was reading. And headed to the kitchen. Once he came in he saw Brian bustling around as best he could with his one good leg. Leaning against the doorway he said, "Are you sure you don't need any help gimpy?"

"Well maybe you can open a bottle of wine and put it on the table with two glasses. That is if you don't want to drink from the bottle of course."

"Well for some reason, I don't think it'd make for a good seen in a movie if we were both drinking from the same bottle." Justin said smiling as he went to get a some win form the cabinet that they normally kept it in. When he opened it he saw a bottle of a nice Shiraz that he had heard only good things about, and to top it off, it had a bow on it.

Walking over to Brian and that stove, "You couldn't possible mean this wine could you love?" He asked holding the bottle up.

"Oh how'd that get in there?" He remarked smiling at Justin and leaned in and kissed his nose. "Yes love, that one." He said smiling and then turning off the burners and took two plates out and put the stakes on them. Mean while Justin opened the bottle and set it on the table with two glasses.

Scooping some rice on to the plates Brian then took one plate out and placed it on the table and got the other. Once both plates where on the table he smiled at Justin, "You ready to have the best stake of your life?"

Justin just smiled, "I'll be the judge of that." He said and then sat down followed by Brian. They started to eat, with Justin's first bite he murred with pleasure at the taste of the meat. "Mmmm, this is good. What's your secret?"

"Old family recipe, and if I told you I'd have to kill you." He said smiling. They continued to eat the meal for the most part catching up on things that they had missed while Brian had been busy play cops and robbers.

The two of them where really enjoying this time together. And Brian started to think that it wouldn't be that bad to leave the force after all. Maybe even start his own home security advising company and work from home so he could always be with his mate.
