Memories: A Poem
Short poem for my best friend that passed away recently.
I just needed to do something. She meant alot to me. Grew up with me you know, had her since she was a puppy. Now she's gone, and I wasn't even there to say goodbye.
She deserved better from me.
The least I can do, the very simplest I can do is to try to communicate to you all what a wonderful girl she was to the very end. If I can tell you how happy she made me, and by some trick of empathy make you happy too, then I think that's the best way to honor her.
I'm sorry to any of you who might be expecting a different type of story from me, but I just needed to do this.
White fur as crisp as winter's snow, black paws the night's darkest.
Same too your maw, a visage unfeeling.
But a heart of gold you didn't show, neither did your eyes.
They told me a sad tale, one of longing I surmise.
Of young passions lost to time's encroachment.
A girl in a cage. All but forgotten.
Sequestered away, time passed you by.
I remember, that with a heavy heart...so too, did I.
Yet, we still found time for each other.
What fun we had in those days!
Your dirty paws traipsing after me, our battles lasted long.
In that cage, we made it ours. Our shelter from days gone.
I still remember, how you'd run and play.
My best friend, of course I'd follow you so.
You'd jump about, your tail wagging.
Ah, but that was ages ago.
And how they'd end! With your head against mine.
Your soft fur braced against cloth, I still remember.
The way I held your paws, the way we watched the sunset.
How you'd plead with me to stay, how I didn't want to leave, I still remember.
But I take heart.
For no matter how far away the ages get.
No matter how time or space would pull us apart.
You, I swear...I'll never forget.

For my girl, who passed away recently.
Thanks for making my childhood so much better, and my teenage years so much more bearable. I love you.
I'm so sorry I wasn't there to say goodbye. If I could go back and do it differently, give my life for yours I'd do it. Even just one last day to say how much I cared, one last chance to wrestle and play like we used to i'd give so much for just that.
I'm so sorry.
