Undertaker of Valen

Story by Kingkazon on SoFurry

A piece I wrote for a book series that I'm working on.

The room was dimly lit by moonlight. The gloomy paint on the wall chipped and the floorboards dusty with signs of decay. A man sits alone in a rocking chair facing a window, silently rocking back and forth as though he was expecting someone. No one knows how long he was there, but his wait would soon end as he heard light footsteps coming up the stairs that led directly to the room he was in. The footsteps grew louder and heavier with each moment passed, until they stopped.. Whoever the man was waiting for was now waiting behind the old wooden door. The door creaked, and the man in his chair saw through a reflection in the dirty window the door opening. He watched the door reveal a silhouette of a man who, for what seemed like an eternity just stood there. The head of the silhouette reached slightly above the top of door frame which was about seven feet high. The width about five feet, the frame of the silhouette was near this size of this. After moments passed, the silhouette walked into the room where the moonlight began to reveal glimpses of the mysterious figure.

His body was grotesque. His clothing was torn, dirty and bloodied. Through the tears of his shirt, you could see scars from healed wounds. Lacerations both fresh and ancient, some also infected in various degrees to which would normally cause death to any normal person. His face could not be seen through the mask he wore. It was made of a mysteriously preserved ancient wood. It held permanently to his head due to it being nailed into his skull. It had holes where the eyes were, but from the distance they could not be seen until he came closer. The closer he got, the larger it seemed he became. There in the reflection you could see, scratches of various depths engraved in the wooden mask. The eyes were cold, lifeless. His mask, coloured by many shades of crimson hinted why his mask had the scars it possessed.

In his hand, the man could see the monster behind him held an old, rusty, bloodied, dirt stained shovel. He could feel his heart slightly racing, pulsating through his body making him tremble. He took a long quiet breath for he knew that whatever came next was inevitable. Rising from his chair, he turned to the monster that stood before him; the top of his head reaching only chest high. As the man looked up, the fear that was consuming him began to fade away until it died when he locked eyes with the grotesque evil.

"I knew you would find me here.. I've been waiting for you for awhile now. I know what you are, but not like the others who tell stories about you. They call you Grave Digger, The Decayed, The One with The Bloodied Mask. Some even think your death itself, but I know who you are, well what you're called. Undertaker.."

As the man said that, he knew by the look of the creature's eyes, he had it's attention.

"I got your attention didn't I? Yes, I know who you are. He made you out of his image. His deranged, sadistic image. Created you to be the monster that everyone would fear. To be another killer in his army of horrific creations... For years I've kept my eyes on you and so did he during those first few years. As the two of you travelled the streets of Valen and the woodlands that surrounded it looking for survivors and other "guests"; I hid in the shadows watching. He trained you to kill, and retrieve the corpses for his experiments and creations. But for the longest time you had no name remember? It wasn't until your first kill..."

Undertaker's eyes looked away for a brief moment as it seemed he remembered like it happened not so long ago. That brief moment ended when his eyes quickly locked back onto the eyes of the man confronting him, his grasp upon the handle of his shovel tightened and his guttural snarl out of anger.

"You couldn't save your master's creation. You and your master arrived too late. She stabbed that jawless creature in the head, nearly instantly killing it. But what she didn't know was that you both saw it all and you rushed up behind her grabbing her by the back of her head. She struggled to escape from your grasp but there was no chance she would get away. The hunter caught his prey.. However, if I remember correctly though, you didn't kill her right away. No, you let her struggle while you watched your injured friend. Its pale sickly body covered in splatters of its own blood. The pipe sticking out of its eyeless face. It wasn't long until you saw it die right in front of you. Your master took the pipe out of its head, all bloodied. That's when it hit you. Your very nature came to surface. The monster was indeed a monster.

You were engulfed by rage and you used it as your master would have wanted you to. You threw the girl down, making her hit her head on the ground. She laid there, her back to you in a daze. Before she could even attempt to collect herself, you took your shovel and dug into her back like you would the ground. It instantly killed her. Seeing your response to the death of one of your own, you master told you to bury the corpse of his fallen creation. As you dragged its body to the woods and buried it, that's when he came up with your name. But that was many years ago...

I kept my eye on you but mainly your master. I was waiting for the moment to kill him or wait for him to die some other way but through his many experiments; he found a way to keep himself alive in a immortal like state. I don't know how he did it but he did. It's been almost thirty years ago since then and I've been no closer to finding a way to kill him. Instead, I've been watching him become more insane over the years, and I've seen too much death and horrific things. This is the reason why I waited for you to hunt me down."

The look in Undertaker's eyes went from anger to curiosity. He lessened the grasp on his shovel and listened.

"I want you to kill me. I'm getting too old to be on the run and hiding in the shadows. Your master knows who I am and he's sent his creatures including you to kill me."

Undertaker tilts his head slightly in response to the man's request.

"I've seen many things as I said before. I've seen new nightmares after new nightmares. From dumb beasts to highly intelligent and skillful guardians. But all of them are horrific. I've watched you though longer than all of them, and I feel that it's only right to have you be the one to kill me. I only ask you though to make it quick and painless."

Undertaker lets out a slight growl as though he is telling the man he accepts his final request. He began to lift his hand until he was interrupted by the man for the last time.

"Before you do this, I have one more request."

The man hands his executioner a old photograph of a cemetery, specifically a headstone that stood alone, away from the others between an old tree and a large stone. Undertaker looks at the photograph then at the man.

"That's the old Valen cemetery. The headstone you see there is my wife's grave. She passed right before your master started releasing his creations. Back when everything was peaceful. I haven't been able to visit her, just wasn't safe anymore ever since that. So instead I found an old camera and took a photo before Valen became infested with your friends. But, after this I want you to take me there. Bury me next to her."

Undertaker gave a slight nod, and from that the man stood ready for his end. The clouds covered the moon that dimly lit the room leaving it not only in silence but also darkness. The silence was broken for a moment when a thud echoed through the room. Then heavy footsteps could be heard going down the creaky stairs and lighter footsteps as the The Decayed left the building they were in. Through the darkness of the night, he could be faintly seen carrying something over his shoulder. As time passed from the journey through the quiet, bloodied, and monster ridden streets of the once small peaceful town of Valen, The One with the Bloodied Mask arrived at a gate and at its peak a sign that was too faded to read. However, he knew this was where he had to go because beyond the gate were graves from a time before him. He walked through cemetery until he reached a familiar sight. It was that the sight from the photo the man gave him. It was as though the horrors that roamed beyond the gates left this place untouched. He walked up to the grave with the headstone that read "Victoria Dunsworth". He looked over seeing a empty space next to her grave, and beside the stone seen in the picture. Grave Digger gently set down what once rested over his shoulder onto the grassy earth and began digging. Some time passed but it was done. An empty grave. He gently placed the body that once was the man in that decrepit and dimly lit room into it and filled it with the cold earth.

The deed was done and the final request had been fulfilled. However, he stood by the two graves looking at the time-worn photograph. After a short moment he put the photo into a pocket in his ancient dirt stained pants and began his journey out of the graveyard. Undertaker arrived back at the entrance, standing there slightly looking over his shoulder; taking one last glance of the old world before returning to his place as a monster in a world of beasts, fear, chaos, and silence.
