Kevin Chapter 4
#15 of Kevin
Once again I need to give thanks to my friend named Marcus who help me to proofread both chapter 3 & 4, he was the one who advised me to split 1 whole chapter into 2 due to how long the story was.
I'll like to point out that Kevin's speeches would be flip flopping from being lisped at time and sometime not at all. This is due to his remaining adult knowledge.
Any feedback and comments about the story is very much appreciated! :3
I hope you enjoy it.

A light soft breeze blew in through the window, causing some rays of afternoon sunlight to seep through the gap between the curtains. As the rays gently swept across a sleepy cub's face, Kevin slowly stirred from his slumber and quickly realized he is hugging something. Something that feels soft, cuddly and fluffy. Something that stretches from his legs to just under his maw. Something that has been keeping his body warms around his belly so he can sleep so comfortably.
Kevin slowly opened his eyes to see a blue fluffy tuft and two large beetle black eyes that each sat upon a patch of cerulean fluff, its eyebrows suggesting that it is staring at him curiously with a very familiar look. Growing curious of what he was hugging, he gradually sat himself up and rubbed his eyes with a wide yawn, letting his pacifier to fall from his maw to be caught by the clip. He then held out the plushie in front of him for a better look, and before he knew, he was looking at the smile of his childhood hero. The plush was humongous from the small Red Panda's perspective; it was almost as large as him despite being in a seated pose. It had its arms and paws stretched outwards and towards him, like an invitation to anyone who looked at it for a hug.
"Steeeeeeche!" Kevin screamed in delight and excitement, pulling the plushie in for a big hug it was pleading for. He savored every moment to examine his newfound cuddle buddy and best friend, nuzzling and sniffing its fluff. Little did he know, that Rose had poked her head into the room, after having overheard Kevin's enthusiasm from the baby monitor, notifying her that her charge had awoken from his nap.
Instead of announcing her presence, Rose decided to take a brief moment to observe Kevin. It was so heartwarming and adorable for her to watch him in such a curious trance. After a short while of observation, she noticed that Kevin's diaper is all puffy with a slight droop, "Hmmm, looks like I better get that diaper change or he's going to get a rash..." Rose worrying about Kevin's well-being. Deciding not to get distracted any longer from the cuteness, she announced herself in the room. "Hello there sleepy head, did you have a good nap?" Rose greeted as she lightly tapped on the door before entering the nursery.
"Mmhmm!" Kevin replied with a nod, still engrossed with his new plushie.
"I see you're already enjoying your new little surprise," Rose commented as she unlocked and lowered down the crib's side. Kevin blushed immediately upon hearing the comment and hid his face in the plushie.
"Dawwww~ It's okay if you want to hug and play with your plushie friend, you know?" Rose encouraged, giving Kevin a good ruffle on his head fluff.
"Reawee?" Kevin asked as he peeked his eyes from behind the plushie, to see Rose's motherly approving smile and nod. Feeling assured, he smiled back in return, knowing that it was okay.
"Now that you're all awake, how about we go to that park that I promised to take you to this morning?" Rose suggested as she lifted Kevin out of the crib with the huge plushie in his possession.
"That sounds awesome! Can Stitch come along too?" Kevin lifted his plushie in question in front of Rose's face.
"Of course Kevin," Rose chuckled at Kevin's silly cub-like antics. "You may bring Stitch along if you want." She carried him over to the changing table tucked in the corner of the nursery.
"Yeaa! Fankies Rose!" Kevin cheered, giving his plushie another hug.
"Hmm, Kevin dear? Your plushie is getting in the way, can you let go of him for a minute?" Rose asked as she laid Kevin on the changing table's soft padded top.
"But I wanna hug him!" Kevin fussed and pouted, squeezing his big fuzzy friend even tighter.
"Huh... Guess you really love your new friend that much hmm?" Rose lightly chuckled at Kevin's cubby stubbornness. Looking at the plushie once again, it reminded her of a technique that she used before, to perhaps get Kevin to be more cooperative. She cleared her throat and reached for the plushie head. "Hello, Kevin!" Rose began to animate the plushie in a high-string silly voice, using its nose to nuzzle Kevin's little nose.
Initially, this surprised Kevin, then he realized that Rose was going to play pretend with him by being his plushie. With rising curiosity and excitement, he slowly released the plushie and let Rose took control of the plushie to interact with him. "I've heard that you're going to take me to the park! Rawr! I can't wait to play with you on the slides!" Rose continued to voice the plushie, using one paw to wiggle the toy around, and the other paw to secure the safety buckle around Kevin's waist to the changing table.
With Kevin happily distracted, Rose expertly changed Kevin's diaper quickly, despite only having one free paw to work with, as Kevin was not wearing any pants for his nap made it much more convenient. When she was done, Rose used both her paws to animate the plushie like a marionette, using the plushie's claws on its paws to boop Kevin's nose and tickle his belly, causing him to giggle and laugh. She continued to play with Kevin for a few more minutes before deciding that it was time to leave.
"Okay, time to get going, or else there won't be enough sun left to play in, right?" Rose joked, returning the plushie back into Kevin's arms before scooping him off the changing table. Holding Kevin in her arms, Rose was ready to leave the nursery with all her essentials in a packed diaper bag, when it dawned on her that she forgot to dress Kevin in some pants. She quickly halted before the door and made a quick detour to the dresser beside it.
"Uhh... Rose?" Kevin mumbled shyly while Rose was deciding if she will dress Kevin in a blue denim short or the orange one instead.
"Yes, dear?" Rose replied as she made her choice, setting Kevin down onto the carpet to help him into the shorts she chose.
"Fanks.. for plushie... " Kevin blushed as he hid his face behind the plushie's head, while his legs were being carefully guided by Rose into his shorts.
"Oh~ You're welcome sweetie, but it wasn't me who got you the plushie." Rose ruffled Kevin's hair once she closed off all the snaps of his shorts. "Daniel was the one who got it for you as he was coming back for lunch. He mentioned that it was from a garage sale and it looked brand-new." Rose explained as she lifted Kevin up and left for downstairs towards the front door.
"Oh... Okay..." Kevin took the moment to ponder, as Rose helped Kevin into a pair of naval blue sneakers. "Uhh... mo... Rose?"
"Yes, my little fuzzy wuzzy?" Rose queried as she picked up Kevin again, bringing him to her SUV. A capsule-like chair had already been prepared in the back seats, but this time it's facing forward.
Flustered by the nickname, Kevin hid his blushy face behind his plushie again. "I.. I just wanna say fanks to Dawiel... Can you call him for me?" Kevin asked as he was being seated into the car seat.
"Oh? That's very polite of you." Rose praised Kevin proudly as she started to strap the padded safety belt on the car seat around Kevin. "Why don't you tell him in person later? We will meet him later, as we'll be eating out tonight." Rose suggested as the last of the bucklers clicked satisfyingly into the center dial. Kevin nodded as Rose sat Kevin's Stitch plushie onto his lap. She then picked up Kevin's dangling pacifier, popped it to his maw, ruffled his tiny head and closed the back door of the S.U.V.
Kevin hesitated for a moment, his internal conflict began to surface again. His wounded adult pride wanted to spit out the infantile object from his maw but the pacifier felt so natural and soothing to suck on, it convinced him otherwise. It did not help either that he is now trapped in a car seat meant for babies, the one that he hastily picked in order to avoid Rose picking a girly princess pink model if he didn't want to pick his car seat. "Come to think about it... I've been tricked into picking a car seat!" Kevin grumbled as he recalled the events earlier that morning. "But then again... Rose was just really concerned about my safety since she lost her own cub due to an unfortunate accident... I guess it's not surprising if she's being so insistent about it." Kevin realized a sense of gratitude and smiled to himself that he was lucky to have such a caring mother.
Kevin then turned his attention back to his plushie friend, who was left grinning on his lap. He grabbed for its outstretched paws and pulled it in for a hug, nuzzling his cheeks on its soft fluffy forehead. "Oooh... I had always wanted you back when I was just a cub... But I never had the chance... And then I grew up, and it was too late..." He reminisced more, as his thoughts slowly drifted into deep dark territories.
As Rose drove her S.U.V towards a town park around the area, she occasionally glanced into the rear-viewing mirror to check on her little tyke, making sure he was comfy and well entertained. Noticing him being uncharacteristically quiet and just staring into empty space for some time, she started to get concerned. "Maybe he's still trying to come to terms with this situation..." Rose thought to herself. "This must all happened so suddenly for him..." She then decided to turn on the radio for some cheerful tunes. "Hey, Kevin? Are you okay?" Rose called out as she stopped the S.U.V just before a traffic light.
"Huh?" Kevin broke out from his trance-like state upon hearing Rose's voice. "Oh... Eh... Yeah..."
"Are you sure? You looked like you're a million miles away." Rose turned her head toward Kevin, noticing how he had subconsciously coiled his tail into a defensive curl around his legs and was clutching his new friend tightly and closely to himself.
"It's notfink... I'm just... thinking about my past... and now...." Kevin whimpered softly behind his pacifier, still clutching onto his companion tightly for comfort.
"Would you like to share with me?" Rose suggested, offering some form of emotional support and hoping he will trust her enough to share about his troubled mind.
Kevin let out a sigh and his pacifier fell out of his mouth. "It's just that... everything that's going on feels like a dream... And it's all very strange... and scary at the same time..." Kevin shook his head in denial, with sourness and bitterness in his tone.
"What do you mean, my dear?" Rose asked. "Are you afraid of being abandoned?"
"Y-yes... W-will I... reawee have start over again?..." Kevin trembled with fear and burst into tears. "What happens if those two found me?! Finding out I'm not dead?! You can be killed!... How can I drag you and Daa... Daniel with me wike this!..." Kevin bellowed, crying his heart out. Just as the traffic light turned green, Rose immediately pulled her S.U.V over to the side of the road. She went to Kevin's side in the rear passenger seats, unbuckled him from the car seat and pulls him into a hug, patting his back reassuringly.
"Oh you poor baby, I'll never abandon you." Rose consoled the sobbing cub. "I'm very touched about your concern about our safety, we'll be fine. Don't you worry about them, Daniel and I will keep you safe, even if these two bad guys would to find us." She reassured, giving him a boop on his stuffy nose. "Why don't you also tell me what's so bad about growing up again, hmm?" Rose queried as she adjusted Kevin into a much more comfortable position on her lap and continued to pat his back trying to calm him down.
"*Hic!*... When... *hic!* I was growing up... I had to fa... face *Hic!* a lot of bullies... It wasn't fun gowing up... I was *Hicc!* alone..." Kevin tried to calm himself down, his voice hoarse by sadness.
"That sounds horrible. Is that why you're afraid of growing up again?" Rose squeezed the little cub in her arms.
Kevin nodded slowly, "They... my parents... told me to ignore the buwwies... but it never worked... and the teachers never caught them... there's never any evidence to..." He hissed indignantly, rubbing his eyes to get rid of his tears.
"How long did this go on?" Rose asked, slowly stroking Kevin's back.
"A... about six to seven years?" Kevin replied, turning to face Rose with his droopy face.
"I'm sorry Kevin... I had no idea that your whole childhood was so bleak..." Rose nuzzled Kevin's forehead. "But I promise you, this time it'll be different, Daniel and I will be with you each step of the way." She then gave him a peck to his forehead as she made her promise. She then reached for Kevin's diaper bag and took out a sheet of wet wipes. She held it on Kevin's nose and instructed him to blow through his nose. While cleaning Kevin's Face, Rose contemplated about how her husband will feel about this situation and wondered if it is the same as hers two years ago, when a car accident robbed her of her own son and her fertility. Now, having some insights about the worries and needs of her little tyke, she felt even more determined to take this poor child under her care and protection. This is another chance for her, to be a mother once again.
After making sure Kevin is completely calmed down and buckled in again, Rose returned to the driver seat and started up the car again. "Let's not worry about all that past stuff now, ok?" Rose advised. "If there's anything you shall be worried about is all the fun you will be having at the playground later, with all the tall slides and swings you can ride on!" Rose's enthusiasm quickly subsided the moody atmosphere, enticing Kevin's cubby side and causing him to bounce with excitement in his seat.
"Are we there yet!?" Kevin chanted.
"Yes, we are!" Rose giggled as she just steered her car into the carpark. "Just give me a minute to find a parking lot, okay?"
"Oowkay!" Kevin lisped in his haste to reply, still bouncing in his seat.
The park in the middle of the city is a beauty at this time of the year; Autumn had brought out its charm with the grounds filled with fallen leaves, turning it into a vibrant sea of orange and yellow. The scent of maple leaves and the sight of them fluttering to join the golden sea put a smile on Rose as she stepped out of the S.U.V. She gave herself a quick stretch before turning her attention to an impatient passenger still bouncing in the back seat. "Calm down now Kevin, we are already here," Rose chided as she unbuckled Kevin from his car seat. "The playground isn't going anywhere." After making sure Kevin has his plushie friend with him, and his diaper bag slung over her shoulder, Rose locked her S.U.V with a push of her car remote. Lifting Kevin up to her chest and carrying him with her arm, both of them made their way towards the park's playground.
While walking from the carpark to the playground, the two enjoyed the beautiful autumn scenery in the park. Rose took the opportunity to check on Kevin's diaper, stealthy slipping her paw into the leg opening of his diaper to feel its wetness. Finding it not too damp, she estimated it can hold a lot more before the little wah needs a change. As they got closer to the park's playground, Kevin began to wiggle in excitement, eager to leave Rose's arm. "Woe there now Kevin, I know you wanna run off to play already," Rose looked at the enthusiastic wah in the eyes. "But I want you to stay on the smaller set of the playground, just to be safe. Understand?" Rose instructed as she pointed towards the colorful plastic play-set designed for smaller and younger children to play on.
With Kevin nodding in agreement, Rose then set him down on the ground and sent him off with a pat on his bum, where he immediately dashed off towards the nearest steps with his brand new plushie friend. Kevin was envigored with excitement the moment he stepped into the playground. He noticed the tallest slide in the smaller playground in the shape of a quarter spiral corkscrew. With a quick glance on the playground's layout, he knew which set of stairs he needs to climb to maneuver towards the start of the slide. With his Stitch tucked under his arm, he dashed forth to begin his ascent.
Meanwhile, Rose picked out the closest vacant bench she could find so that she can keep a good eye on Kevin while he played. Just as she sat herself down, she heard a familiar voice calling her, "Auntie Rose!" Turning her attention towards the source of the voice, Rose noticed a teenage reddish-orange fox dressed in a pink and white jersey, accompanied with dark grey shorts, waving in her direction. The dark markings on the fur of both of the ears, paws, and tip of the tail quickly jolted her memory.
"Ronan!" Rose greeted her niece. "What a coincidence!" She exclaimed, swifting her tail aside and beckoned the fox to join her at the bench.
"Hello, Auntie Rose! I was about to leave for home when I saw you!" Ronan gave her aunt a hug before sitting down beside her at the bench.
"Oh? Soccer practice?" Rose guessed, looking at Ronan's attire.
"Yup! We've got a match against the Badgers next week, so Coach got us drilling with his tactics." Ronan spoke with confidence. "We've never played against them before, but I'm sure we'll win!" She clenched her fist with bravado.
"That sounds exciting! I wish you all the best in your upcoming match." Rose cheered for her niece.
"Thanks, Auntie Rose. So what are you doing here?" Ronan asked, noticing the diaper bag beside her aunt. "Are you babysitting for Mrs. Janet again?"
"It's not Janet's little boy I'm babysitting this time," Rose replied, as she pointed at the red panda cub climbing up the different platforms of the playground. "Kevin over there is a lost cub your uncle Daniel found two days ago while he was on duty, I'm currently taking care of him right now."
"Awww~! He so adorable!" Ronan squeed. "How old is he?"
"I know right?" Rose nodded in agreement. "He's... nearly 3 years old, but undersized due to a lack of nutrition." She explained, maintaining a close watch on the active cub climbing the playground facility.
"Oh... So what's going to happen to him?" Ronan asked. "You said he's a lost cub right?"
"He's staying with us for the time being, until Daniel and I can make proper arrangement for him..." Rose replied when an idea crossed her mind. "Say... Are you free tomorrow?"
"Hmmm I don't really have any plans," Ronan thought aloud. "Why?"
"Well I was thinking, since tomorrow Daniel and I are going to be busy making proper arrangements and settling a lot of paperwork for Kevin," Rose recounted. "I was thinking we could use a sitter to watch over him at home since it's going to be really boring for him if we bring him along." Rose then turned to her niece. "What do you think? Wanna earn some extra cash?"
"Hmm... Okay! Other than a few assignments I've to complete during the weekend, I'm kinda free. I'll do it!" Ronan accepted with a nod. "So how much will I get for the job?" She asked with a grin.
"How about... $50 for the whole day?" Rose offered.
"I will like $60... please?" Ronan pleaded. "There's this shirt I saw online and..."
"Alright alright, I'll give $60 to you, since it's a last minute request anyway." Rose chuckled. "I'll need you at my house by 9am tomorrow, is that okay?"
"Sure thing Auntie Rose, I'll be there," Ronan promised. "Oh! I best get going now, got a bus to catch. Bye Auntie Rose! I'll see ya tomorrow!" Ronan exclaimed as she hopped onto her feet, swiftly waving goodbye as she left in a rush.
"Bye Ronan!" Rose called out, as her niece quickly disappeared from her sight.
It was Kevin's 3rd time down the spiral slide when he noticed Rose talking to another stranger figure, and by the looks of it, Rose had also just ended her conversation with the other fox figure as they both bidded each other goodbyes. Curious to find out who Rose was talking to, Kevin got off the quad spiral slide and toddled towards her, clutching his soft friend safely in his arms.
Rose turned her attention back at Kevin after seeing Ronan off, only to spot him toddling toward her. "Oh? What's the matter, Kevin? Are you thirsty from all that playing?" She then reached into her diaper bag and pulled out a bottle of apple juice for him.
"Eh.. yeah..." Kevin accepted the bottle of juice and began suckling on it. "Who was that?" Kevin asked in curiosity after finishing the bottle to its last drop.
"By 'that', you mean that teenage fox I was talking to just now?" Rose verified Kevin's question, to which he nodded back. "That was my niece, Ronan Sionach. She just happened to be in the area and decided to come to say hello."
"Ooh... Okay." Kevin nodded in comprehension. His attention quickly shifted towards the swings at the playground. "Can mo... uh I mean, Rose..." He paused, suddenly feeling unsure of what he just said.
Sensing Kevin's uncertainty, Rose got off the bench and kneeled down to his eye level, pulling him closer towards her. "Yes, Kevin? Is there something wrong?" Rose asked, caressing the white fluffy cheeks of her tyke while retrieving the empty bottle from him.
"Can you... help me with the swings?" Kevin asked nervously.
"Oh... Yes, of course, Kevin." Rose extended her paw towards Kevin. "Let's have some fun before dinner time, shall we?"
"Okay!" Kevin smiled as he accepted her paw, and both of them trekked back into the playground again.
