#23 of Gifts
Here's how things go for LeiLani when she goes to see her husband uninvited and how people get their just reward.
It was only three weeks until the annihilation of her people and LeiLani had come out of her three-day fasting. She turned to her maids and told them to prepare her for her meeting with the king, even though she wasn't invited to see the king at this time. Her maids tried to persuade her not to go see him without being summoned for they knew that anyone who appeared before the king without being summoned was to be condemned to the Blood Lagoon. The otter knew this, but the lives of those she loved were at stake.
Once she was ready, she made her way to the king's throne room. She hoped that her husband would at least see her for he loved her dearly just as much as she loved him. But appearing before him while performing his royal duties as king was enough to make anyone nervous. She soon arrived to the doors that led to the throne room. She heard the king speaking with Jamie. LeiLani took a deep breath and entered the room. The king and Jamie stopped and looked up to see who would dare come in without being invited and to their surprise, it was the queen herself. "Who invited the queen?" asked Jamie, "Did you invite the queen?" The brown wolf looked to the king who was both glad to see his wife but stunned that she would turn up at a time like this. "No, I didn't summon her," he said, "But I'll allow it." LeiLani sighed with relief grateful that the love she had for King David was still strong. David was the most thankful to see that his wife was all right. He would never have forgiven himself if he lost her. "But your highness, she broke the law," said Jamie but the king scowled at him. "But she's my wife and can see me whenever she wants," he said and then turned to the otter, "So what is that you wanted to see me about? I'll grant it to you, even if it is half my kingdom." LeiLani gulped and noticed that Jamie had a raised eyebrow at her. "Um, if it... uh, if it pleases the king, there's something that I would like to..." her sentence trailed off as she noticed Jamie crossing his arms at her but she quickly recovered and uttered the first thing she could think of. "I'd like you and Jamie to come to my quarters for dinner tonight," she said before smiling nervously. The king smiled and even Jamie seemed pleased. "We'd be honored," said David, "What time would you like us over?" She thought for a moment and replied, "How about seven?" "Seven it is," said the king and he tenderly kissed his wife before she left.
Now don't get me wrong. Showing up before the wolf king is a very brave thing to do. But telling the king that his royal advisor was a weasel is especially difficult. What if he doesn't believe her? If the weasel stays, let's just say it wouldn't look so well for the otter. No. LeiLani was waiting for just the right moment to break the news on her husband.
That night, the king and Jamie joined LeiLani for the dinner she had prepared for them. It consisted of tuna fish, boiled lobsters, and shrimp cocktails. After awhile and all the food they had settled inside them, the king turned to LeiLani. "So, what was it you wanted to tell me?" asked David knowing that there was something else on her mind. "Well," said LeiLani nervously, "The real reason I asked you over tonight was to... was to..." Then she saw Jamie giving a suspicious look at her but she recovered quickly and replied, "To see if you both would like to join me for dinner again tomorrow night." It was rather fast and the room was silent till the king agreed and Jamie's suspicious look faded into a welcoming smile.
Later, Jamie was walking home till he saw Nathan sitting against one of the outside walls to the palace. "Well, hello there," said Jamie giving the dragon a gloating smile. But Nathan just remained silent turning away from the brown wolf. But Jamie continued, "I guess there's not much to say, eh Nathan, seeing as how in three weeks you and your village will be fish food." Nathan still said nothing. "You know, I just came from having dinner with the king and queen and they invited me over again tomorrow night," continued Jamie, "They must really like me. Why don't you like me, Nathan?" The dragon sighed as he got up and turned his back to the wolf. "You know, it wouldn't be so hard to show that you like me. Just a little bow that's all, " added Jamie, "Is that so hard? Who knows? I'm a very influential guy. I might be able to work something out for you and your village-" But Nathan turned around sharply to face the wolf. "Arrogance is not fitting for a fool, Jamie," he scolded, "Much less is lying fitting for a royal advisor! I will NEVER bow to you!" This shocked Jamie greatly but then the hackles on his neck rose as he snarled. "Oh yeah?" barked Jamie, "Well maybe this foolish royal advisor can arrange for you to swim with the piranhas TONIGHT!!!" Then he stormed off towards the docks. There he saw a long black boat with red sails. "I'll see to it that the king agrees to sign that dragon's death warrant for sure," he growled and he went over to the captain and told him to expect one dragon by the name of Nathan Dracos and once he arrived, they would take him to the Blood Lagoon to be fed to the piranhas. Once the boat was all set up, Jamie went back to the palace to ask for the king's permission.
Meanwhile, the king was listening to a dalmatian scribe read from the royal diary to help David get to sleep. While the young pup was reading, he came across something he thought would interest the king. He read, "Entry 172: A plot to assassinate the king was foiled by the ice dragon Nathan. Entry 173..." "Wait, hold it," said the wolf sitting up, "Did you say Nathan saved my life? He's the blue dragon with the red hair isn't he?" The pup nodded his head. "Yes, your majesty," he replied. "That's what I thought," said David, "Uh Wild, did we ever do anything to thank him?" "No, your majesty," replied the dalmatian. "That's a shame. Hmmm... I wish I knew of some way to thank him," he said when he heard a knock on his bedroom door, "Come in." Jamie came in but before he could speak, the king interrupted him. "I'm glad you came, Jamie," said David, "A matter disturbs me. You may be of assistance." Jamie nodded glad to have the opportunity to show himself off. "I am most pleased, my lord, for I, too, desire your counsel on a matter," replied Jamie. "A certain man has been of great service to me," said David, "He has received many honors amongst his people, but he once saved my life." Jamie went wide-eyed. For a moment, he thought the king was talking about his own royal advisor and this pleased Jamie greatly. "I feel, despite everything, full recognition has not yet been given him," said King David, "What do you think shall be done for this man in whom the king delights to honor?" Jamie beamed at himself as he said, "If the king wishes to honor this person, I'd say they deserve a parade," said Jamie, "Let a royal robe be sent for, one his majesty has donned in public. And a horse, on whose head a royal crest is set. Deliver them to one of the most trustful nobleman so he can array the man in whom the king delights. And then parade this man through the streets proclaiming, 'Thus shall it be to the man in whom the king delights to honor'." The king smiled, "You see, Jamie? You're the creative one around here. What would I do without you?" said David and Jamie just blushed and reveled in the reward he would enjoy himself. "Now, I want you do all those things you mentioned for Nathan Dracos, the blue dragon who's sitting near the front gate. Jamie's jaw dropped when he heard this. "N-N-Nathan?" he spluttered. "And you'll be the one to go with him on that parade, all right?" said David to a slack jawed Jamie, whose' lower left eyelid was twitching while he was trying to process what just happened as he left.
The next day, Jamie reluctantly placed a royal robe upon the dragon's shoulders and had him mount one of the kings' horses. All the while Jamie walked in front proclaiming to make way for Nathan, the one the king delights to honor. They say pride comes before a fall. Looks like nobody told that to Jamie for he had never felt so humiliated in his entire life. But if Nathan, LeiLani and the village are going to be saved, LeiLani had to come through and she only had one last chance.
