Sonic sat on the hill, staring into the sunset. Despite his seemingly peaceful expression, he was edgy. Amy was bound to come looking for him, demanding to know why he had missed their date. Sonic scooted a little lower on the hill, hoping to hide his quills. Too late. Within moments, he heard a familiar voice calling him.

"Oh, Sonikku!" the voice called. Sonic sighed. "Yes, Amy?" he said quietly.

Amy ran over the crest of the hill and slid down to sit beside Sonic. She hugged him, saying, "Oh, Sonic! I missed you SOOOOOO much!" She pulled away. "Did you know we had a date today, Sonic? Or did you forget?" She narrowed her eyes, adding, "And don't use a lame excuse, like you were sucked into a book or something!"

Sonic sighed again. "I guess I forgot again, Amy. We'll go on one tomorrow, okay?"

Amy beamed. "Okay!" she chirped. She got up to go, saying, "Meet me at the cafe in Station Square, okay, Sonikku?"

"Alright, Amy." Sonic said wearily.

Amy skipped away, humming a tune from a love song. Sonic slumped onto the ground. Why do I feel like this? he asked himself. It's like some part of me is missing, like I've lost someone.... He had felt this way ever since Shadow had disappeared. Normally, he wouldn't care, but today, the weight of it hit him like Amy's hammer. He had felt a wave of sadness wash through him, leaving him feeling depressed.

Could it be? Could I possibly.... No. I'm just tired, that's all. I'll feel a lot better after I take a nap. As he closed his eyes, he couldn't help but think, But why am I so sad? It can't be because Shadow's gone, can it? Sonic couldn't help but imagine Shadow's black fur, how it shimmered slightly in the light, how his red, no, ruby eyes seemed to look straight through you, into your soul....

Sonic shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts. No more thinking about Shadow! We're rivals, remember? He dislikes me, I mess with him. Case closed.

Sonic stood up and stretched, feeling his spine crack a little. He took a deep breath, then ran in the general direction of the Green Hill Zone. He needed some time to think. Within minutes, he was at the coast. He slowed down a little, waving at Angel Island. He could barely make out Knuckles' form in the twilight. Putting on a burst of speed, he ran quickly away. He knew that the Green Hill Zone was still far away. That suited him just fine. Dodging obstacles and jumping over gaps took up most of his concentration, keeping his mind off of Shadow.

When the Green Hill Zone was finally in sight, he skidded to a stop and stared. Such a long time since I've been here, Sonic thought. Wonder if anything has changed. He ran across the bridge separating the Zone from the mainland and charged up the first loop. He jumped across some spikes, ground on the rails a little, wound through some twists and turns, and....

He was done. Sonic stopped and turned around, taking in the sights behind him. It seemed so hard before, Sonic marveled. Chuckling a little to himself, he turned around to run across the bridge leading east, but before he could move, he happened to look up and saw a dark figure moving towards him.

"What the...." Sonic began. He couldn't say anything more, because a fist slammed into his cheek. "YAAAAAH!!" he yelled, flying back and hitting a tree. He sat up, rubbing his head. Looking up, he saw the figure walking slowly towards him. He recognized it immediately. "Sh... Shadow?" Sonic asked.

The clouds moved, revealing Shadow's grinning face. Sonic gasped. Instead of his eyes being their familiar red color, they were a dark violet. "What the...." Sonic asked. "What happened to you? And why are you smiling like that? Did something fall on me?" He rubbed his head, trying to wipe away whatever may be on him.

Shadow's grin grew wider. "You won't have to worry, Sonikku." Hearing Amy's nickname for him come out of Shadow's mouth made his heart beat faster. Shadow knelt down next to him.

"I'll make your death quick, though I can't guarantee that it will be painless.... It may be." Shadow grabbed the sides of Sonic's head. Sonic's breath came out ragged. Despite the fact that Shadow, or whatever demented form of Shadow this was, wanted to kill him, Sonic couldn't help but not want to hurt him.

Get a grip on yourself! Sonic shouted to himself. The guy is about to kill you! Do something! He willed his arm to move, and it did. In fact, it came down hard onto Shadow's head. "Unh," Shadow grunted, caught by surprise. He leaped up and raised an arm. "CHAOS SPEAR!" he yelled, and a dozen scarlet arrows rained onto Sonic. Sonic leaped out of the way, landing a couple of yards across from Shadow. Shadow bared his teeth and growled, slashing his arm through the air, sending more Chaos Spears at Sonic. Sonic jumped again, this time landing farther away. Shadow grinned. "What is this? Are you running away, Sonikku?"

Don't let his words affect you.... Sonic thought to himself, but it was useless. He couldn't help but feel affected by his nickname coming out of Shadow. Especially in the mocking tone he used. Blinking back the tears that threatened to spill out, Sonic replied, "No, I'm not running away, Shadow!" It didn't come out the way he intended, however. Instead of being strong and fearless, his voice cracked when he said Shadow's name. This didn't escape Shadow, who laughed quietly and sprang at Sonic. Sonic didn't move fast enough and let Shadow tackle him. Actually, Sonic didn't move. He wanted Shadow to tackle him, to feel his body pressed against Shadow's. Shadow's grin was still in place as he peered at Sonic, pushing himself into a sitting position. "What is it, hedgehog? Do you want me to kill you? I suppose you do, since you're not moving or anything."

Sonic didn't hear Shadow's words, too captivated by the face in front of him. He was so absorbed in looking at Shadow that he didn't see Shadow's fist slam into his face again. Still pinned underneath Shadow, he couldn't do anything but whimper in pain. Shadow's maniacal grin grew wider as he pounded Sonic's face again and again. "BWAHAHAH!" he laughed. "This is more fun than I realized!" He crouched down low, placing his hands on either side of Sonic's head. "Why aren't you doing anything? I would love a challenge, Sonic the Hedgehog."

Sonic was jolted back into reality, away from his fantasies, all of them involving Shadow for some reason. Now he felt the pain and cried out. Shadow smiled, dark purple eyes narrowing. "There we go...."

He placed his face closer to Sonic's. The azure hedgehog's heart nearly exploded as Shadow's eyes looked into Sonic's. It was too much for Sonic to resist. Lifting his head up, he pressed his lips against Shadow's. Shadow froze in shock. He hadn't expected this. As Sonic's kiss went on, something strange happened happened to Shadow. He squeezed his eyes shut and pulled away. He jumped off of Sonic and glared at him. Sonic, confused, met his stare, wondering what was happening to Shadow. The onyx hedgehog fell onto his knees and grabbed his head, crying out in pain. "No... not... now!" Shadow shook his head, then let his hands drop and lifted his head to the sky, letting a yell rip through his throat. When he was finished, he started to slump onto the ground, but Sonic jumped up and caught him before he could. Shadow appeared to be unconscious. "Come on...." Sonic pleaded quietly. "Wake up. Please wake up, Shadow. Please."

Shadow's eyes opened wearily, looking into Sonic's emerald eyes. "What... the hell... happened?" he asked.

Sonic sighed in relief. "Nothing really. You just got possessed, that's all."

Shadow's ruby eyes widened. "WHAT?!" he asked. He shook his head, as if he was trying to rid himself of whatever was left of the thing that had possessed him. "Damn it...." he muttered to himself.

"What?" Sonic asked.

Shadow looked at Sonic. "Did I have purple eyes, Sonic?"

"Yeah... why?"

Shadow looked away. "So it's true...." He looked back at Sonic and grinned. "You must like me, since I was brought back."

Sonic froze. "How did you...." he wondered.

Shadow laughed. "The only way for someone to be freed from that particular curse is for them to be kissed!" He looked at Sonic's wide eyes. "But don't worry, I share those feelings."

Shadow lifted his head and Sonic moved closer, their lips meeting halfway. Sonic fell over to the side, bringing Shadow with him. The two hedgehogs never broke the kiss, either. When the sun finally rose, the two former rivals slept soundly, Sonic hugging Shadow close to him, giving the impression that he will never let go.
