Discovery
She walked into the darkness, laughing. The beautiful black cat walked away. Her every step seemed to taunt me, to haunt me, to thrill me, and entice me to follow. I wanted to. I felt myself trying to lift my leg, only to find I couldn't. In a second, she was gone. I growled, and then heard a roaring snarl as it forced its way out of my throat.
"Hahahaha.... Yo! Kuma... KUMA! Dude, wake up!!"
The scene went black, and then light returned. My eyelids slid open only to reveal the amused looking husky in front of me. He was wearing dark jeans and a bulky navy jacket. He had always been a bit on the small side, but I knew he had some muscle under that hoodie. When I stood up, I towered over him. He had never been tall, and I dwarfed him with my natural ursine height.
I growled, still half asleep, "Hugo... you're annoying."
He laughed his high pitched annoying laugh again, shrugging. "Dude... chill." I was just trying to wake you up; you scared the crap out of Benji with that roar!"
I blinked and looked around at the cluttered and yet sparsely furnished space I called my room. Benjamin, Benji, my bat roommate looked down at me from his perch of a bed, his oversized ears perked up. "He didn't scare me Hugo! Just surprised me, that's all." The bat climbed down quickly, brushing off his logoed black hoodie insecurely. "I'm going on ahead." The bat moved out of the room quickly, tucking his ears under the hood.
"So... what were you dreaming about, huh huh? HUH?" The overexcited husky was in my bubble again, his nose poking up into my face. I just growled and pushed him away. "None of your business." I gruffly said as I grabbed a blue flowered Hawaiian shirt to throw over my undershirt and jeans. I left it open as I exited the dorm building. Hugo was hot on my tail and talking up a storm, like usual.
I breathed a sigh of relief as I pushed the front doors of my ratty dorm building open. Cold air swept around me, putting everything else out of my mind for a second. I loved the wind, I could always feel it swirling in my fur and spiraling around everything in its dance. I loved it when it got cold. Benji was leaning up against a tree in front of the paved walkway, waiting for me and the now complaining dog beside me. "Damn, why does it have to be so cold? I mean, your lucky man, that you're so big! Shiiiiit! I bet you don't even feel the freaking cold, do you? Lucky bastard!"
We all took a short walk through campus to the student parking lot; the fallen leaves crunched under my feet. I was at peace for a bit until my eyes caught a glance of black fur. My head instinctively turned to see what it was. I hate my instincts sometimes. Standing there was the black cat from my dreams. It was my ex-girlfriend, Crystal. She was in a group of her friends. I noticed her hanging on a big Doberman. I guess she had already found someone new. They were walking away towards a big car that I recognized as Crystal's. The moment lasted a second before I was in my own vehicle, Benji in the backseat and Hugo beside me. "OK! To Slap Daddy's, mothafucka!" The excitable canine slapped my shoulder.
The day passed in a blur. None of it interested me all that much, even when Hugo jumped in front of traffic and nearly got run over. It passed with a few laughs, some damn good burgers from Slap Daddy's, and a mall run to check out our town's game store. I walked out of the crowded game store beside a very excited puppy. He was clutching a copy of Swordetta like the game box was filled with hundred dollar bills. He ran off to some other store as fast as lightning. Benji, coming up beside me just sighed and shook his head, still under the hood. "Always excited, that one... I'd better go watch after him..." Benji strode off; his lanky body seemed to glide over the malls tiled floor. I followed after a bit slower, looking around for the first time today. Sun shone down through the mall's glass roof. It illuminated the single story mall way better then the building's track lighting did. The place was almost empty, only a few roving bands of high school kids lurked about. The few older people I saw out of the shops were sitting on benches that surrounded built in planters that lined the mall. I guess they were to keep the place from looking too artificial. It didn't help much. I kept my slow pace towards the direction I saw my friends go off in. As I turned a corner to head towards their direction, I stopped in my tracks. Standing at a smoothie stand, there was a girl. A white feline was dressed in an almost gothic black dress that was cut just right for her petite body. She was small, but slightly curvy and had black hair that was cut short in a pixie style. Her tail had a black bow tied to it. It swayed as she happily waited on an almost comically big smoothie. The feline talked with the big tiger working the stand for a second, paid him, and walked off, obviously happy about her purchase. I stood there for a second, stunned. The girl was amazing. She had to be the cutest thing I had ever seen. I blinked for a second, trying to clear my head as the feline walked away. I moved away from the area, going about the trip with my friends, the white cat constantly in the back of my head.
