#16 of Short Stories

The sounds of a gryphon attempting to prepare food.

~ The crisp sound of a freezer opened, the soft whump of the door closing. Subdued rustling of cardboard tearing, then shift of plastic slid across cardboard. Softly mumbled aloud reading of directions.

~

~ Whuck-click, microwave door opens. Click-whuck. The door is closed, tones are heard. A hum pours out into the room.

~

~ Several minutes pass.

~

~ Sharp tones pierce. Whuck-click, click-whuck. Soft profanity to accompany burnt fingertips. Tearing of plastic, a still moment of silence.

~

~ A sigh of frustration and dissapointment. The wet landing of a TV dinner in the bottom of a trash bag, clanking of a pot being removed from a cabinet. Rattling of a drawer of utensils, heavy thunk of a can onto the countertop. Crishk, can opener finds purchase. Barely audible keen as steel yields to blade.

~ Shlorp, the pan is occupied. Clwunk, pan atop stove. Sharp clicks of electric arcs, then fwoosh of flame.

~

~ A minute passes. A whine of impatience.

~

~ Several minutes pass.

~

~ The faintest start of the burble of a boil. Muted click, the sounds of fire evaporate. Impatient click of a beak.

~ Clanking of bowl and spoon, soft shlurip as contents poured. Huffing of breath directed over the top. The soft footfalls that only come from the most cautious of steps taken when carrying a bowl of hot soup.

~ Soft whunk, spoon rattles and slides against glass. Scuff of a chair dragged, wooden creak of a chair occupied. Another silence falls, judgementally.

~ Exasperated sigh, with a chuckle at its heels.

~ "We r'lly need to buy groceries.", the gryphon informs Chuck.
