Ektus (Commissioned)
This is my first piece here, and my first commissioned piece! I wrote this short story for a friend of mine, in trade of some artwork. The character Ektus belongs to her, and the story is of his origins :3
Ektus
Another round of toxins. Another round of agony. Another round of nods and clipboards. This was all there was to Ektus' life, and despite the gruelling pains and various illnesses he had to endure, the rabbit's life was simple, and he lived with it as best he could. That would all change drastically however, after one final toxin...
"This one, subject G-105, mass series." Said one of the many men in bright white lab coats, holding up a small needle which contained a black liquid, resembling crushed charcoal. Various buttons were pressed and some data was logged on a computer as Ektus' cage door was opened. The usual patch of shaved fur was used as the needle was pushed into his skin, causing the slight wince he was so used to. The rabbit watched the thick substance slide into his side with an odd heat he hadn't felt before, but brushed it off as just another toxin. The needle was removed shortly after, and with a rub, the autonomous voice of the scientist said,
"Good job, boy. Come on, it'll take a while before any effects show, if any, and we can observe via video recording." And with that the crowd of people shuffled out of the room, chatting quietly. At first, nothing happened to Ektus besides the unusual heat; he simply prepared for whatever sickness and pain was coming. What came next however was a suckerpunch of pure agony.
Ektus squealed in surprise, and much more so in pain he had never experienced. His side flared up dramatically like hot coals and was quickly spreading, as his scared and panicked breaths stuttered and gasped. He curled up and began writhing as it felt like his fur was singed and burning off: a few scratches showed it was rapidly falling out in big patches, and he whimpered in fear. A second burst of pain enveloped him as it spread to his heart, brain and eyes - he grew stiff and stopped breathing as it felt like he was melting from the inside out; he couldn't tell if his heart had stopped beating at this point. It was all he could do to dart his wide eyes towards his paw, only to silently scream when he confirmed he was right: his skin seemed to be sinking slowly, deflating around the showing mould of his skeletal frame, which was also quickly deteriorating into nothing. His eyes had gone blind as they slowly drooped and melted out of their sockets, and the roaring in the rabbit's ears was deafening, but through the white noise he heard the door swing and the click-clacking of shoes. The last noise he made was a spluttering mess as his body became an indistinguishable agglomeration of black goo, sticking slightly to the ribs and skull which had somehow remained intact, a slight sizzle sounding as it dripped out of the bars of the cage.
"...I should be dead... what's going on..." The last bit of Ektus asked himself. He could, somehow, see himself - a pile of bones and goop. "What am I doing...?" He watched with as much surprise as he felt it: the black substance had begun to move, slowly and sloppily, clinging to the bones tightly. As the oblivious scientist worked away checking things on the computer, the gooey legs of Ektus had formed, messily holding the ribcage up, morphing into and around the cracked bones protectively. Silent in awe, he was no longer surprised when everything went dark again, and he felt a suffocating grip on his sides - the goo had solidified somewhat after a few sloppy tries, forming his torso and currently unworkable arms. It wasn't long before he felt agony once again, this time in his head as the goo slid into his skull and latched tightly, like a mother's grip on her child. Suddenly, and in a pained fashion, he gained control of everything, feeling and function once again, and with a bright flicker he felt, and saw his eye-sight return through green fire. He took a deep breath through lungs he didn't own, looking down at his new, dripping body. It was moving softly, sinking and picking itself back up, struggling at first to stay intact. His ribcage was visible and open, revealing his still heart, but Ektus didn't care anymore. The dull realisation hit him that he was the size of a human, if not a bit taller, as he stared into the wide eyes of the scientist, who had turned to leave, running into the shifting shape of goo instead.
"E-Ektus? This is... interesting... I must..." His voice trailed off as he fumbled with a syringe, clearing his throat. "G-Get a sample..."
The scientist approached slowly, and as he lifted the needle to the open heart which lay dormant and exposed, he cried out in shock as the amorphous body jolted into action with its first heartbeat, grabbing his wrist and almost crushing it, forcing him to drop the syringe.
"Wh... y..." Garbled words fell from the skull's mouth, a sad and confused look mixed with anger as he struggled to form the first words. "Wh... what am I!? Y... you did this! What did you do to me!?" Ektus spat out in rage. When he received no answer, he growled through a goo bridged muzzle, seemingly crushing the wrist without applying any pressure. The scientist screamed in shock and pain as the rabbit realised he had melted through the man's wrist, his hand falling to the floor already cauterised. Throwing the now unconscious man to the floor, he turned around and began to shamble clumsily towards the exit, quickly learning and adjusting to his new body. Pushing the door open heavily, he noticed he left a corroded pawprint, and kept his hands away form his own body just in case. Ektus began walking quicker, almost running, to the second door, when it opened before him, revealing several other scientists: they saw Ektus and stopped in their tracks, as did he. The black goo dripped with a soft splattering sound as, still scared and confused, the rabbit began unexpectantly drooling. He tasted a slight sting as the drool almost bore through his own jawbone. A spark going off in his head, he waited a short second before spitting a large amount at the leading scientist; the saliva hit and clung to his cheek and neck, quickly taking effect as it hissed and burned through his flesh, and deep through his muscle and vein in the neck, killing him slowly. He approached the two other screaming scientists, almost bubbling with rage. Ektus placed a paw in the first's face, the goop quickly wrapping around the head, muffling her cries as his paw acted corrosively by command this time, melting her features and killing her shortly after. As he advanced to kill the final one, his raised arm shifted suddenly; scaring himself, it detached and fell to the floor heavily, with a soft squelch as it connected to the ground. Speechless, Ektus stared at his own arm, noticing the small tendrils of goo that connected it to its currently empty socket. Quickly grabbing and crushing the last scientist's throat, the rabbit focused, almost straining, on his loose arm, when to his surprise it started moving again, being lifted by the tendrils and pushed back into place, forcing a soft grimace from the goo rabbit. Making sure it still worked properly, which it did, Ektus focused his sights once more on the hallway, and more importantly the exit ahead of him. He didn't even feel his tail detach shortly after, feeling instead the bridging tentacles of goo pulsing softly as they dragged the tail back into its rightful place. He wore an expression of anger mixed with conflicting anxiety as he made his way to the door, melting the puny lock easily and stepping out into freedom, and a whole new world for a whole new body...
