The History of Talon Lightbringer

Story by Talon Lightbringer on SoFurry

,

War.

A simple word, that I have known all to intimately well.

They say that the fate of all high dragons is to die in combat; Sworn to duty and honor. And although all my kind live for glory, fate had be cruel.

But... All shall be told in time.

I, am a dragon. A thing of legend, filled with a certain admiration of our power, and out cold unyeailding dedication to our tasks. Listen now my friends,to my tale. A tale filled with pain, and loss...and also hope. A tale that spans over 18,000 years. The tale, of the one thay call "Lightbringer".

My tale begins in a place of great evil. A place, where the screams of the dieing echo unanswered in the shadows of night, and the destruction of countless battles scar the land. A place, where gods cannot see...and death is a way of life.

I was born under the sign of the "Student", deep in forsaken land. I was born in the Cleft of the Fallen, A doomed region of my realm, surrounded by fire to the north and ice to the south. Nothing but rock and the lichens are in that place. Under the protection of a cave, my egg sat, watched over and kept in a mighty blaze, waiting. Then, I came free... Upon hatching, I had fully formed talons and wings, So my father named me for this odd trait. Hence, Talon was born. But, my father had not long to celebrate. Only one reason do my kind dare to enter the Cleft... War.

The mountain I was born in was called Mount Silver, named for the odd metal that fell from the sky into it, a shard of metallic rock jutting from its side, like an extension to its already supernatureal beauty. The mountain's gift, though, was also a great tool. A tool that could be used to destroy and create. In the past, we had sent out greatest dragons to bring us the metal. It was indeed a gift from the gods.

We named it "Starsilver", for the fact it came to us from the stars themselves. It was a remarkable thing, harder than all but a diamond, nearly un-warpable, un-meltable, and resistant to all but the most devastating acids. Our race made many great things from it, though only the most powerfull high dragons of earth could mine it, and the most volitile fire dragons could heat the forges that held it. This metal seemed to be the answer to our needs...

This metal was our salvation...but, also, it was our doom. The dragonarmies were in the cleft for war...War for dominance for the mountain. The elements seperated, my father being of light. War raged between our kind, untill one day, the high dragon elders came to an agreement: We would keep the silver safe, but never use it....for our greed was mighty, but our honor, stronger. We sealed off the cleft using the powers we held over the elements, Leaving only one entrance guarded by one of each element. The Prismatics.

My father died in the war before I ever got to truly meet him. Alone, and stranded, I was rescued by a Prismatic, one that I've never even been able to thank. My first memory not blackened by a thick fog is my waking in the elder's hall. It smelt like nothing...oddly. No scent, not even dust...

As a child, I was a fast learner. My dreams were of joining the militia, just as my father did before me. I trained from a very young age, using my natural ability to learn to great use. Combat became nothing but a calculated movement one after another. My mind grasped such things with ease, and after my 1000th passing of the sun, or "hatch day", I was known for my ability with most weapons. I joined many competitions and won most, only failing when I doubted myself. All high dragons earn a name for their abilities. My own, was "The resourceful".

An aspect of a high dragon is the ability to control the elements. Some dragons control fire, others wind, or earth, and yet others water. This was the way, until many years before my birth. We used to only mate inside our own elements, remaining pure. But, many did not, in secrecy. This led to multiple elements forming in our souls. This is a very...intricate form of magic, for two elements do not always make the same outcome. Fire and earth can be magma, lava, or obsidian. All matters are almost random, dragons sometimes not even recieving any magical traits from a parent. Depending on the quantities of certain elements, some dragons can produce very odd things.

I was born a very rare thing indeed. My own power is that of all elements. I feel fire, water, earth and air, as well as light and darkness. But even more astounding is my ability to control not just one at a time, as most like my kind do. I can focus on multiple elements, making me a very "resourceful" dragon. Though, what I gain in ability, I lack in power. My fire is feeble when compaired to a fire dragon, as are all my powers. My element is named after the 6 that defend mount silver, "Prismatic".

After honing my gift and my skills, I set out for each element's sacred grounds. Training in each until I mastered control of my powers, I traveled. War always raged, though between many others than dragons. I travelled for a long, long time, until I returned a warrior, scarred by many battles, and my mind clear, shown the truths in my world.

I had trained in many weapons, But I found one to be a great and powerful tool. I enjoyed the use of the War glaive, a twin-sided bladed weapon, much like a bo staff of razor sharp metal. I asked the great smith, Torak Ironclaw, if he would make one for me, and he did.

Named the "Dragonblade", it is a war glave made of one solid piece of starsilver, 3.5 meters long. the center, wraped in enchanted dire bear skin, is 30 centimeters, the rest being a slightly curved blade on both ends. Prime for an offense and a strong defense, the blade can block and strike in but one movement. It is also weighted quite well, making a great throwing weapon.

Joining the high dragon army, I rose to become a general quickly. My powers were useful in war, And my spirit was unbreakable. Soon enough, I had at my disposal, a great squadran, and my fellow dragons and I won many battles. After the war of the skys (a battle of air demons and dragons), I was pulled aside by a great meeting of lords; dragon and otherwise. They knew that the peace we had only days ago earned could end in but a word, or even silence. They wanted to safeguard the realm. They asked the gods for help, and they replied... They gave us the word to create the "artifacts."

An artifact is a symbol, most often a weapon. We dragons crafted the metal for them, making them out of our most prized possession: Starsilver.

With the Artifacts, we needed someone worthy of using them. Thus, the Gaurdians were born.

All of the races of our realm had great warriors. The greatest of them were gifted with an artifact. With it came a responsibility: To drop all ties with one's own wants. It was a sign of being greater, being responsible for the realm's safety. No longer could we fight ourselves. United, we would all prosper and survive.

After the creation of the gaurdians, I found a brother, Named bloodbane. He was black as night; his Ax a cruel wepon that he used agains our foes with glee. But, after reterning from a raid on a deamon camp...he was never the same. His soul was as black as his hide....his corruption sorrowing to my heart. Although I will not tell his tale, If one askes, I may. In the end, he killed my mate; And, I killed him is single combat. There is not one day I do not mourn for him...But he took from me the only thing I had in this life.

For a long time I wandered...lost to all but mysef. I worked as a mercenary to pass the time; a job that taught me much of the hardships of life. I killed, I had brothers die at my side. I traveled much, from great seas to dence forest. I fought as great wars raged around me...

...Truly, I mourn for my world. My heart is heavy with the simple truth...that war is a way of life for all.

So here stands before you, A dragon who has seen life and death. One devoid of fear, for I have nothing to lose. I walk alone, hunted by many. One would think being known for your prowess with a blade would make you feared. But, alas, feared or not I am hunted by many who wish to prove their worth. Such is fate... Although I wish it could end.

Some think that I am....Full of myself. Let them think as they will. I am not here for them. I am here for you, the ones that are here for me. The ones that are outcast, and broken, come to me. I know the feeling well. I have shared more then enough of my own folly. I have been scorned, only due to my own actions. I understand how my fate will turn out, and if you want to know the truth, come to me. I do not pull punches, nor do I have suger to coat the truth. I am Talon Lightbringer, and I know pain. I know fear, and I live with darkness.

...And I will show you peace, If you show peace to me.
