Twenty four hours: a furry horror story
#1 of The Furry shop of horrors
Twenty four hours...
"Cooper why are you dragging me out here on a Saturday morning in the rain and cold to buy a video game?" I asked him. "These aren't just video games Aiden" He told me as I rolled my eyes and sat back in the passenger seat with a sigh. Cooper was one of my best friends in the whole world but his obsessions with underground video games could drive me up the wall. Cooper was a cougar with those two distinct black marks under his eyes the rest of his fur a bright beige color. I on the other hand was an arctic fox white all over except for the tip of my tail and my ears; both of which were black. We stopped the car outside of a shabby little store in between many other shabby little stores... most of which were closed down. We walked inside the store that smelled of Chinese take-out and I was immediately ready to leave when I saw the only person working in the store was a Wolf who looked like he had done quite a bit of drugs in his better days. "What have you got for me today Carter?" Cooper asked the wolf who was apparently his friend. "Carter" pulled open a drawer full of games and showed them all one by one to cooper; who after examining them for a moment rolled his eyes and looked at the stores employee, "is this seriously all you've got?" he asked. Carter squinted, "well I did get this one game..." he started "It's called twenty four hours because supposedly you die if you don't beat it by that time" he said "but I only have one copy." He finished coughing. "LET ME SEE IT!" cooper nearly had a stroke over the counter. "Uhm" I started "Maybe we should not buy it and say we did" I said. "Aiden come on we both know you can't be scared over a video game." I just blushed and face pawed, "fine go ahead." I sighed, "I swear to god your like a little kid." Cooper flashed his usual goofy grin before flipping me the bird. Carter seemed to think it was hilarious... I seemed to think carter was disgusting. We walked back into the vulgar repulsive back room and Carter pulled down a box taking out a black video game case labeled "24H" on duct tape. "Classy..." I muttered under my breath. Cooper shot me a smirk and shook his head taking the game from carters hand and replacing it with a twenty dollar bill.
"Aiden please stay over tonight and you can play." Cooper said as I lay on his couch contemplating the idea. "I'm inviting all of my gaming buddies and Elliot is coming..." he started smiling "he is bringing hazel." It was my turn to flip him the bird while blushing. "Fine" I said "I'll stay and play the stupid game." I smiled.
"COOPER" Elliot the eldest of the husky triplets including Hazel and Ryder walked in with his siblings. Also joining the party was a wolf couple Gage and Gabrielle, and a snow leopard named Sienna. Okay so eight of us can play at one time so I set up my gaming system to take all of us at once he said as we all sat down, Hazel right beside me, much to my pleasure. Cooper slid the disk into his game system and the name twenty four hours flashed upon the screen. The set up for the first person shooter game was incredibly easy and as they started the game out it was surprising how good the graphics were. Maybe I was only in a good mood because Hazel was so close to me that I could hear her heart beat and she laid her head on my shoulder sending a shiver through my spine and the fur from my head to the end of my long tail stood on end. The game led us through cobblestone streets to fight all kinds of zombie like creatures, the kind of thing I usually didn't like but given the circumstances... all was more than alright. After about five hours I noticed that the game really did count down from 24 hours and that we had only that long to beat the game that now got harder and harder or we would die. I almost hoped we wouldn't win so I could prove the game wrong, on the other hand I hoped we would win so I wouldn't have to take that chance. After a while the husky laying her head on my shoulder yawned when we decided if the game was going to go on for twenty four hours than we should take turns. We split into two teams of four. Hazel and I stood up from the couch scrithing our claws on the floor before yawning more and turning to lie down. To my pleasant surprise she chose to lay down right on top of my nuzzling my neck as I rubbed her back and smiled.
We woke up this way much later to Gabrielle and Gage laughing at us. "You guys slept through the game." Gage teased "we didn't beat it but we are all alive." He smiled. Hazel rolled around hiding her face in my blanket. "Really Gage?" she started "you woke us up for that?" she grumbled as even I laughed. "Your team got the top achievement though." Said Cooper as gage finished the sentence for him. "Not dying at any point in the game." He said. Hazel still trying to sleep at this point waved her finer in a circle above her head "Whoop Dee freaking Doo." She mocked. We had only gotten the achievement because Our team never did play.
"Let's go!" said Gabrielle getting into her van. We were all going to get pizza and hang out at the mall, how any of them could move around much less go anywhere on no sleep was beyond me. It was upon getting into the car that it all started to go bad. "Babe we have a small freaking problem." Gage told Gabrielle, "Your Van wont start." Hazel rolled her eyes and hugged me while I kissed her head looking around at the sky that seemed a weird color today, different but somehow familiar, the air was also very still, too still I couldn't find comfort even while holding onto Hazel. It was around that time that we saw him, a lion walking in an odd way limping to the side as he came straight from across the street. "What the hell is going on?" Ryder screamed. "That thing is from the game!" he said as the lion moved closer not really walking but somehow making his way closer in some static motion. Ryder picked up a shovel propped against the fence in Cooper's yard and slammed it across the head of the lion as he fell onto the ground and Ryder continued to slam the shovel down on his head blood dripping from the lions face. "Oh god oh god oh god!" shouted cooper looking down. "Aiden!" hazel said clinging tightly to me "what's happening?" she asked. All I could do was answer the obvious answer; it would seem that the game isn't quite over... I said scared as she was. "We should get inside NOW!" exclaimed sienna moving in as quickly as possible all of us following. Cooper and Sienna had played enough video games that they knew exactly what would work best as a weapon, as we went around the house collecting weapons to carry around. "Look at the clocks!" shouted Ryder pointing all over... "They are counting down from twenty four hours!!!" the time currently read 23:05 "so you're saying we have to stay alive... for 24 hours?" hazel whimpered squeezing my paw with her own. "I think that's exactly what it means" I said. It was at this time that we heard a shattering noise as the window in the kitchen shattered into pieces. "The house isn't safe! Sienna said grabbing her baseball bat and leading us to the back door. "Now in the video game," she started things will be almost predictable yet unavoidable." She said as cooper nodded in agreement. "We have to get somewhere high up." He started "They will still be able to get to us but we will be able to see them coming." He said as they unlatched the back door and we made our way down the street. "How about the water tower?" Sienna asked and cooper nodded. "Let's go now it's already getting dark." He said. We started running toward the water tower that was a few hundred feet away when we heard Ryder scream "They're following us!" he said "They're EVERYWHERE!" he cried. We suddenly started moving a lot faster but it was in vein for they were coming from in front to. Gage took the hatchet he had with him and started running forth cutting into anything that moved. "NO!" Gabrielle screamed, "Gage you're going to get yourself killed!" He cut into the necks and shoulders of many dead lions and tigers as even more zombie like species started coming out of everywhere. "This is the stupidest freaking game ever cooper!" I screamed at him and he looked at me with shocked eyes, "Okay you were right!" he admitted. Gage went to cut into the throat of another one of his attackers when another jumped on him from behind. Gabrielle screamed aloud. The one from in front closed his paw around gage's throat the long uncut claws cutting into his flesh. "GAGE!" Gabrielle started crying as hazel and held her back to keep her from dying to. The tiger in front of him who was missing half his face dug his claws in as blood sputtered from gage's wound and he closed his paw before ripping out a hunk of gage's throat as they watched him sink to his knees the life fading from his eyes they attacked him and began ripping apart his dead body to shreds. Gabrielle sobbed into hazels are unable to look as we took advantage of their distractions to run as far from the scene as possible. Cooper and Ryder made it to the bottom of the water tower but we were cut off by a group of the horrid beast and ran into the nearest house. "This is insane!" Sienna said "worse than any video game!" She finished groaning. We made it down to the basement where we hid locking the top. "Remember though," she started "locks mean nothing." On one paw we were in a horrible situation, on the other at least I had Hazel in my sight otherwise I wouldn't be able to take it not knowing what was going on with her. Gabrielle continued sobbing into hazel's arm as she held her tightly crying herself "I'm so scared." Gabrielle cried. Hazel looked at me with the same look in her eyes as when she saw gage killed, "Me too." She muttered holding even tighter onto Gabrielle and crying. The roof of the basement started shaking violently. "HOW DO THEY KNOW WE ARE IN HERE?" Elliot screamed. "Remember," I said "it's a video game." I finished sadly. The roof continued to shake when an entire canine fist busted through the overhead door. I ran up the small set of stairs and turning on one of the charged power saws in the basement proceeded to sever the entire fist from its arm watching it fall down the stairs and to the floor. Hazel pulled me down from the stairs. "No," she started "you're going to get hurt." We sat over in the corner grabbing whatever weapons we could. Finally the door burst open and several of them fell into it and ran over toward us, Elliot took a chainsaw to them watching as bodies parts fell to the ground their blood still spurting from the severed veins and arteries. The whole scene was so grotesque and macabre as I held on tightly to Hazel who screamed as a lion erupted forth and instead of ripping the chainsaw out of Elliot's arm he ripped his entire arm off as Elliot screamed in agony freaking out and going into an almost immediate shock. At this point I felt a paw on my shoulder and I turned around with the power saw cutting the throat of a wolf watching him fall to the ground feeling Hazel pulled away from me I almost freaked out and cut the person there only it wasn't a zombie it was Sienna pulling us through a basement window. We climbed out as Hazel screamed for Elliot... "Come on Hazel," I screamed "we have to go now." She only stood screaming and I had to pick her up and run with her; run to the water tower. We made it up the ladder where we found a large number of dead bodies only three attackers left fighting against Ryder and Cooper, I ran up and pushed one of them straight off the edge of the tower. Ryder stabbed one in the chest and one pushed me up against the edge ready to push me off. "NO WAY!" Shouted Hazel as she grabbed the kitchen knife from Ryder and shoved it into the lizard attacking me. She shoved it into his throat and pulled it back watching him die before hugging me and planting a kiss on the side of my muzzle. "How long do we have?" I said knowing it had been hours. "We have around seven hours." Cooper said. "No," started hazel "I'm so tired." She said nuzzling my shoulder. "Where is Elliot?" asked Cooper and Ryder in unison. I just looked down at my foot paws and sighed scratching my claws along the ground realizing for the first time hazel and I still had on no shoes. "He died?" asked Ryder starting to cry. At this I looked up and nodded sadly. There was a rumbling as the water tower started to groan beneath us and began to sink into the ground. "The game," started Cooper, "It knows we found a way to survive and it's going to take that away. We only watched in terror as the entire water tower sunk into the ground, with us hopping off and trying to find a new place to hide. "The store across the street." Said Cooper, "It looks safe."
After prying open the doors to the grocery store Cooper, Ryder and I secured it the best we knew how to keep it from being broken into by the fierce monsters, besides in around six hours now this would all just go away. We all sat together in the store, Hazel right beside me clenching onto my paw tightly with hers and whispering into my ear. "Aiden," she asked, "Are you scared." I nodded before leaning down to kiss her. "I'm terrified," I started "But I promise that I wont let anything happen to you." I said when she made everything we were going through a little less horrible by nuzzling my neck and for the first time saying what I always wanted to hear from this amazing husky girl. "I Love You Aiden" she said, "I love you too." I replied squeezing her paw and kissing her head again. Ryder opened up a bag of chips and threw them at us, "I know you guys have got to be hungry" he said opening up a bag for himself. Hazel ate more then I did before falling asleep on my shoulder.
"Only two hours to go" said Cooper and as if on cue another banging was heard from the back of the store, for the past few hours one of them would find a way in the back every now and then. Ryder picked up the shotgun we had found and loaded in the store. "I'll kill it." He said making his way to the back. "We heard shot gun sounds followed by a roar and a sigh of relief when we heard the pad of foot paws making their way back to us. Only when the beast stepped from the aisle did we realize it wasn't Ryder holding the shotgun. He fired one shot and we screamed as Gabrielle fell to the ground. The gun was now empty but the beast lizard threw it my way flinging Hazel and I to the far wall. Sienna ran over to us making sure we were okay. "Everything is fine." I said, "We have to save cooper." The beast stood over cooper and put a paw to either side of cooper's head clenching tight with both paws and pulling all at once roaring as Coopers scream was cut short his head ripped violently from his shoulders as we watched screaming in agony. My best friend was dead. I picked the shot gun up from the ground and ran behind the lizard hitting him in the head. I then climbed on top of the large beast and pounded the metal part of the gun into his face and then into his mouth. I shoved it down his throat as far as it would go listening to him slowly choke to death on his own blood. We ran to close the back door of the store making sure nothing could get in. "I can't take this anymore" Hazel cried into my arm. Sienna looked at me sadly. "I know how to keep you guys alive" she said, "Because I've figured out the pattern of this game." She said. Everyone who died in the game is going to die here. I gasped, but Hazel and I didn't die in the game." I said. She nodded sadly closing her eyes as a tear dropped down her light furry cheek onto the ground. "I'm pretty sure." She started "that when you guys make it back this game wont even work or turn on." She said "It will be useless." I only stared at her a while before hazel asked. "Why?" Sienna smiled sadly, "I'm pretty sure the only way to bring us back into the real world is to play the game again, that's why there is only one copy." She cried and fell down onto the ground.
Only Thirty minutes left and sienna still wasn't dead. We sat around eating whatever we could find to pass the time. Suddenly the whole front glass of the store shattered. Sienna was jumped by a large wolf that came out of nowhere as he literally began to eat her. He ripped apart her chest and throat with his maw eating away at her flesh. Hazel and I couldn't fight back as we were attacked by identical wolves. As they started to tear into our flesh the pain was so agonizing that I could only scream and cry. Maybe Hazel and I could die after all. "Hazel!" I managed to scream "I LOVE YOU!" just as my throat was ripped away from me and the whole world faded in an instant. I awoke on the couch with Hazel in my clutches. We both woke up and screamed at the same time "Was that a dream!" which only confirmed that it wasn't. Our friends were missing and the game... just as sienna said, it was worthless. I decided immediately we were going to go see carter, the guy who sold the game to cooper.
When we pulled outside what used to be the game shop all that was left were a few bricks surrounded by trucks from the fire department. "What happened!" I asked the nearest volunteer firefighter. "The place burnt down last night" she said "Found a bunch of dead bodies, Two husky's, A cougar, A snow leopard, And some wolves." She finished as I looked at hazel our eye's growing wide. Turns out Twenty four hours wasn't much of a game after all.
