The People Like Us Ch. 4
#4 of The People Like Us
I am back! First off, I would like to say sorry to the people who may have been waiting on the newest update to this story. Second, I am sorry for the inevitable wait that will happen for the next. I am a horrible procrastinator, especially when it comes to writing. Anyway, we once again join our favorite teacher in this mew installment as he deals with his coworkers. Enjoy!
>From MY LOVE:-* <3 <3: Sorry babe but I'll be home late tonight and won't be able to eat that fantastic food you're probably going to prepare.
"Awww how sweet," The fluffy white cat giggled as she read the message on the small screen.
"Audrey give me my phone," I gave a low growl to show my irratance at the cat who had decided to steal my phone from me. I reached my paw over her shoulder but she once again turned around and sidestepped the device out of my reach.
"Too bad I don't know the code. I'd tell this mistress that her sweet and apparently cook of a boyfriend Alan has a new girl in his life," She gave a smirk as she once again tried to put in a code that failed just as the others had.
"Fiance actually," I corrected without thinking it through.
"Oh so it's pretty serious," Audrey looked up from the screen with a curious look on her face. "How long have you two been together?"
"Since college so 'bout 7 years," I smiled warmly for no particular reason other than knowing I had someone who loved me that dearly.
"Oh wow. Why haven't you tied the knot yet?" She verbally poked.
"I'm Canine so we have. Many times." I gave a devious smile as her eyes widened.
"OH My GOD, Alan! Not like that. Sick dog..." I chuckled at her reaction, which was the one I had hoped for. As she was distracted, and still cringing at what I had said, I stealthily reached in front of her and grabbed my phone.
"But actually just... some stuff is holdin' us back," I gave the one who we were talking about a quick text back then put the device back into my pocket.
"Oh. So what is her..."
"Good afternoon you two." The Doberman known as Mr. Jaggers interrupted our conversation. "Here are some maps and emergency procedures from the school that you are required to hang in your rooms." The tall dog thrust the papers at us before he made his leave with a simple "Good day." We waited until we could no longer hear the clack of his immaculately clean shoes on the tile floor before we started to talk again.
"Is he ever in a good mood?" I lightheartedly asked.
"There is a legend that he actually smiled once." The cat giggled and snatched my papers from me and headed over to the pinboard next to the door. There she started to attach the sheets with pins.
"Very funny, cat. Two more weeks and school starts right?" I knew, of course, that I was right. I had been watching the calendar for months now but I wanted confirmation that it was indeed approaching as fast as it had been.
I saw the cat just happily nod as she placed the last of the papers. I still wasn't sure about being a teacher. All of the responsibility had been weighing on me.
"All of those kids remembering me for the rest of their lives, looking up to me for guidance..." I thought to myself as I watched Audrey reapproach the spot I was standing.
"Yeah, but next week we have to start coming in every day for meetings and a bunch of blah," the feline sat on top of my desk as she spoke. Her colorful spring dress shuffled as she adjusted her position.
"Oh, and look at that. It's time to go! It's been nice getting to sit here with you in a quiet room but the high-speed internet that my apartment has calls for me," she ruined her hard work at finding a comfortable position by sliding off of the glossy wood. "See you later, doggy!"
That was that. Audrey was out the door and well on her way to her car before I even decided to move. It was Friday and I had two days of free time until I had to get back to being a "no life teacher". I laughed at that for some odd reason.
I said goodbye to the office lady as I walked out of the reinforced glass doors that led to the teacher's parking lot. It was shady next to the building because of the clouds that littered the sky. I took in a deep breath of the fresh air and let it all out in a blast from my stretched jaw as I looked up.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket to see a new message from the love of my life and a notification for a missed call. I gave a quizzical look as I read "Call me now" on the screen.
"No use in ignoring that demand," I typed in the number I had memorized years ago. Ring one, ring two, and the phone was picked up.
"Hey, Babycakes!" I heard come from the other side of the line.
I gave a goofy little smile as I answered back, "Hello, Bailey. What did you need?"
"To hear your voice of course!" I laughed a bit as my paw shuffled around in my pocket to find the keys to my car. "But really I was thinking of going out to eat tonight. How does Italian sound? It will be late but we can find a place"
The door to my vehicle opened and I climbed into the driver's seat. I looked down to my belly as I answered, "Sounds damn amazin' honey. Any reason you want to eat out? Are yer parents comin' to visit?" I chuckled at my own joke as did Bailey.
"No, no. Just wanted to treat my big man to a meal."
After that, it was a simple goodbye and "meet you at home." I turned the key and heard the starter turn. Cool air came in from the AC and simple jazz music from the speakers.
"Not what I want right now," I said aloud as I browsed the radio stations. I gazed out the window just in time to see another teacher drive out of the parking lot. I was in a new area with so many people I didn't know. Back in my hometown, I knew everyone. Looking at me now in my surprisingly roomy but small car, suit, and tie, and very well kept fur, no one would know I was from a town with less than five-hundred people -- even if the twang in my voice still came up now and then.
"Screw it." I changed it from the radio to the CD player.
After a small intro of guitar and music, the words flowed out, "Am I more than you bargained for yet?"
I drummed on the steering wheel and hummed along as I pulled out of the parking spot and headed on my way home. My thoughts continued on the open road.
"These city kids are going to be a pain in the ass," I decided in my mind. "Of course some of them will be amazing and prove me wrong."
I waved to a fur as he walked along the street without a thought just as the song changed. I had wanted to be a zookeeper; I had no idea how that led to me being a science teacher. It sure had surprised my mom. It didn't surprise anyone though when I moved to the mountains. It seemed like it was just yesterday that I was telling my classmates that I was going to move up there and "study Canidae at a local zoo."
"Heh, I should call Mom and ask her how everythin' is goin' soon. It's been awhile since I talked to her." I stopped at the red light as I finished my sentence. I looked out to the right and saw a cute little cheetah girl look back at me from the car next to mine. She couldn't have been older than ten but she gave me a smile and a wave so I waved back. It was that type of little interaction that you usually didn't get from people around here. I missed knowing people.
