the first chapter of a book I started but never came back to. Susan is a dragon from another world. In fact she is a princess. A future brood queen for future generations of dragons. This fact she does not deny to even herself but she wants to do more for her people than being a birthing machine. So she learned of a secret mission from the high queen and sneaked in to be part of it. This lead her to be transported to modern North America where she meets Steve. A computer hacker/ son of vetenarian who failed to follow in his fathers footsteps. That is till now!

fav/like if you like/enjoyed this. I will be posting what I have written up in chapter pieces every now and then.

To know my story you should know how it really started. First I was not twenty three when I first met my friend Susan. I was not some muscle bound hansom hunk many see me as. It is true I have put on near a hundred pounds of muscle in the last few decades; most of it is due to rigorous training in life or death situations. Then getting into par for anything else that was thrown at me. Susan was a huge help. She knew me better than any of the others and knew I pushed myself far more than I ever should have many times to do what was expected of me. By myself and others. No, I spent years getting myself to what I am today. But when this story starts I was twenty eight, one eighty three pounds, five foot ten wimp. A geek by society standards. I have a masters in computer design and that is a start of four other educational masterings I no longer use much of anymore. I was an average web designer dash hacker that was employed keeping a few small business systems secure from other hackers. It was a solid thousand a month. Seventy five from each of seven businesses.

The worst I ever had to deal with was high school kids trying to rip off their grandparents credit cards. In fact I was just getting done writing a new firewall for 'The Gun Emporium Pawn and Loan Shop' when I was about to take a break. In break I mean what any other guy my age would do with ten minutes on his hands and no love life to think of. Now I'm not saying anymore about that but that is what kind of led me to meeting Susan for the first time. I was about to bring out my favorite movie and start watching it when some message appeared on my computer. Normally I would have ignored it but it was showing a news report of a dragon flying and I thought it was some amusing prank. I barely got connected to it in time to see a dragon disappear around a building. Naturally at the time I would have thought it an amusing waste of time and was about to get back to what I was doing but something busted threw my front door.

Somethings I immediately understood. First whatever it was was strong. My front door was solid oak. Sturdy as such at least. Second it was careful. I heard it close back in hopes nothing saw it come in. By that time I had my pants up and a club. Not one many of you would understand but one made for a game called golf. I never played the game myself. They were my fathers. Whoever it was that charged into my house was also fast and swift. Except for the frame of the front door, where the lock was, being obliterated, nothing was disturbed. Nothing seemed out of place except a stream of blood that seemed to start at the door and run toward the kitchen. That is where I met Susan for the first time.

Steve came and asked me to help him with his written works. At first I asked why but he kept on saying I was as much part of it as he was. Eventually I gave up refusing and agreed. The first time I met him. Well he was much less impressing than many humans are. At least physically. But the moment I met him I immediately understood why we needed them back. Who would have thought back then they would have such weapons. It was widely believed they were still as ignorant as they were when we left them. The task was go in, avoid the town guard, snatch up as many we could and collect them in a single spot before returning.

It takes time to do the transport by yourself but as a group it takes only an hour or even minutes if you got enough. I knew I was not going to be able to join the others so I hoped I could remain hidden and return without being too shamed. Who would have guessed what happened the next morning when I got back. Just my luck the house that seemed abandoned was actually occupied. Steve spoke of it once the reason why was he paid a boy to maintain his landscape but he moved to another town recently and had yet to find another. Back to the time. I was trying to nurse the wombs I received.

We are trained to remove shafts from our bodies as all know but their weapons uses small ball sized objects. Nothing to grab onto and dig out. So I nursed the bleeding. Bless Steve being knowledgeable in healing arts. At least some. He was unlike the others who were threatened or admired me when they saw me. No, he dropped the metal rod he had and went over to his healer kit and started nursing me by first taking some of the pain away before returning it to get the metal the others put into me. I saw seven balls on the floor by the time he started sewing my side back up. I did not complain. At least not to him. I cursed and screamed under my breath. I was keeping myself quiet to keep my presence hidden to any others that may still be hunting me.

Chapter one

Steve awoke in his lounge chair. Remembering immediately why he was there. He no longer saw the dragon on his kitchen floor and in fact the whole place seemed scrubbed clean. Only the first aid kit and bullets in the bowl remained. Steve sighed and decided to clean up himself. Hoping that would clear his head of what happened. He went into his bedroom, not seeing the dragon on his bed, and went into the adjoined bathroom and took a shower. He had just opened the door again after drying off to find a fully awake dragon looking at him. Instinctively he used the towel he was about to put in the washing machine to cover up. For a full minute the two just looked at each other wondering. “ Well if your not going to say anything I am."

Steve immediately went back into his bathroom and closed the door. Holding it shut with his back and breathing hard. After a minute to comprehend the situation and believing it was some trick of his mind telling him he needs more sleep. He opened the door again and peeked out. Hoping to just see an empty bed but was disappointed when he saw the same orange and yellowish dragon yet again. This time laying it's head on his sheets and looking his way. He immediately closed it again and took a deep breath. “ Okay there is a dragon on your bed. Why there is a dragon in your bed you don't know. Is it some waking fantasy you have dreamed of?"

Steve slapped himself before tying the towel around his waste and opening the door again. This time the dragon seemed less interested of him and was looking at a news report on the tv. “ Good the others got away. I'm very glad."

The dragon touches the remote under it's claw and the tv goes off. “ Ingenious device. I wondered up here after you dosed off. I heard healing magiks take it out of you. I accidentally laid on it and took me only minutes to figure it out. That is how I learned your tongue."

Steve just stood their dumbfounded a moment. “ Wait, you're a dragon? How? Why are you here? Who are you?"

The dragon rose up and sat on it's hind as it's ears nearly touched the ceiling. “ Dragon, close enough. My name is Susandec Stroctasjfbhsakdjfb. Susan for short. The how is how I intend to go home if you are willing to come with me. That is why I came here." Steve became puzzled a moment and caught himself from asking something stupid. Instead he said something even more so. “ Well Susan could you leave my room so I can get dressed. I'll meet you again downstairs."

Susan nodded and left the room. She saw a strange chair she quickly found amusing as she rocked in it by pushing her tail against the ground. She thought of the magik she was working in preparation of going back home. She did not have much longer till the gathering of energies was done and she had to cast it. It startled her some how much faster than thought it was taking. She was doing by herself what four would. She was rocking the chair hard ten minutes later when it was caught from the back. “ I would appreciate it if you did not break my grandmothers rocking chair."

Susan immediately gets off. Making sure not to leave any marks on it. “ Oh, sure sure. I was just amusing myself some before we leave." T

he human squinted his eyes. “ We leave. You presume I wish to leave. Tell me why I should."

Susan was a little caught off guard. “ I don't know why. I!"

Susan stopped and the human backed away into another chair. “ You are hiding something."

Susan looked away. “ I was not suppose to come. They said I was too young. Too small. That I was in the class of queens. I did not want to stay behind. I wanted to come see this place of humans."

Susan saw the human's anger melt away. “ A child that does not belong?"

Susan only nodded. “ If I go what should I expect?"

Susan raised up a bit. “ An adventure."

Susan realized he was not talking to a warrior but the mention of adventure was not something she thought would ignite something in him. Yet instead of immediately jumping to the chance he just sat there and thought. Susan just laid down herself on the floor. Thought if she had the proper training she could undoubtedly convince the human to come. She thought of telling him of all the troubles and challenges that would be presented to him but did not wish to scare him off. Especially sense he seemed open to the idea. In truth she did not know many of them herself. She raised her head as she had a thought. “ I can only tell you this. If I am able I will bring you back if you change your mind."

Steve thought it over as he heard the dragon's words. Even that promise was hollow. Yet it was every fantasy fan boys dream to meet an actual dragon. The prospect of meeting more was appealing to him. “ If I go I want your promise on something."

The dragon only raised up. “ If I'm able to."

Steve gripped the chair. “ Don't let anyone else take responsibility for me. It will only be me and you who will take credit for the good and the bad."

The dragon laid down and put it's head on the back of it's claws. After a minute of not getting a response Steve spoke again. “ Hungry? I'll cook something if you like."

Susan raised up slightly. “ That would be nice."

Steve rose from his chair and went into the kitchen. He got out a three packages of bacon and a few dozen eggs. “ I'm sorry if there is not enough now. I've been needing to go to the store for some time to get more."

Steve opened the bacon and put the slices on a skillet as he heard. “ That is fine. I'll eat whatever you give me."

Steve sighed and looked at the bacon starting to cook. “ Have I gone completely crazy? I'm fixing breakfast for a dragon. A dragon! Dragons do not exist. What I should do is call my employers and tell them I'm taking a vacation and take one."

Susan laid down still as she heard the human try to convince himself yet again she was not real. She did not mean to hear the words but she heard them none the less. As the sweet smell of the food reached her nostrils she was checking on her side to see how harmed it still was. The bandages held stout and her side was not bleeding anymore. She was about to remove them when the smell of food took her from it. It was an alluring smell. Complete with the sight of a healthy portion of food on three plates on a table. Susan walked up to it and looked at the food. She figured it good manners to wait for the human to sit before eating so she moved the chair to elevate herself to over the table. Instead of sitting the human came to her side and checked the bandages. “ I think I have convinced myself you are real. Either that or I have gone crazy. I would hate to believe that I've gone mad so please tell me more of where we are going."

Susan laps up half a plate of eggs and swallows them before turning her head. “ There is a valley overlooked by mountains on three sides. To the south west there is a stretch of open land after a cliff. Then the sea. The sun sets are beautiful there."

As she spoke the human pulled the bandage off. Some of the blood had dried and crusted to her tender flesh where injured. She nearly bit her tongue off to keep from screaming in pain. He then went and started examining the holes in her side before stroking her back and going to the counter, where he left the healer kit, and put on fresh bandages. The bloody bandage was put into a black bag. “ We will have to watch it together then some time."

The human said as he cleaned his hands and arms once again of the blood. Susan watched as she ate the remaining food in front of her. It was when she finished that she noticed she had ate it all and left the human none. Susan felt a little sorry for that when he stroke her back again before gathering the plates and putting them aside. “ I'll have to watch those over the next few days but you should be fine."

Susan nodded in return. “ So exactly how are we going to get to where we are going to go. It does not seem a place I can walk to."

Susan raised her head forgetting the magik. It had been ready for some time and still gathering energy. Much more than needed and it all had to be used. Quickly she concentrated on what she desired from the casting and the whole place shook.

After Steve stood again he noticed the generators in his basement were running and the main lights were out. He quickly got up and went downstairs to turn them off. Something told him he may have a need for their power later. When he got back upstairs he heard a thunderous noise come from his front door and the dragon Susan already moving to the broken and open barrier. She made a similar one as he came up behind her.

Suddenly Marshal General Galatem stopped his cursing as Susan heard the human come up behind her. “ By the three gods, is that a human?"

Susan moved forward slightly. “ It is a human. Now tell me the situation."

Galatem paused in looking at the human before becoming more civil. “ Princess after your disappearance and after all searching for you failed your double had been scheduled to be executed for treason."

Susan immediately responds. “ Send word immediately I am back and it was under my word she take my place. If punishment is to be brought then it is to be on me."

Galatem hesitated only a moment before turning to his side to one of his subordinates and doing as ordered. He then turned back to her. “ Now for this human. Even thou you were the only one to bring one back you did not get a big or strong one. I doubt he will last five days. Unless he locks himself in this weak structure then perhaps a week or two if he has the supplies."

Susan looked at the confused and scared human. He may not be able to understand what they were saying but the tone could be heard. “ And even my accomplishment lead to injury. This human may not be impressive physically but he has training in healing arts as well as other ways we can not fathom. This one is my responsibility and no others. I'm the one who brought him and that is it."

Galatem bent down a way to the smaller dragon. “ I can not refuse you Princess or it will be my head but I will say that it is not my decision. You used my staging area to do this so I am somewhat responsible. Your actions have consequences. If I am lucky I will not be stripped of my position and if very so my listing place I have spent much of my life to obtain. You at worst will have to reap what you have sown."

Steve looked in terror and some aw to the dragons discussing something. After realizing this was not about him mainly he relaxed to only watching and looking around. His house and much of his yard had been moved into the middle of a barren field near a mile long and wide in each direction. There were near a hundred dragons around he noticed. He quickly noticed the power lines around his house severed cleanly and sense there was no power to them safe to move around. He quickly moved behind his house to find it as equally roomy and the shed back there untouched.

Then he saw the sea and the town beside it. None of it's inhabitants were human but that did not change the fact that they were waking up and doing mundane things as well. It was a rare beauty to behold and he watched it for a minute before several pairs of wings rose right in front of him. In surprise he fell backwards and continued to move the direction as several more dragons landed. Each one the color of Susan. One of them seemed to growl at him and he stopped. They could easily kill him if they decide to so he decided to try to at least be civil. He put his hand to his chest. “ Steve."

The seemingly threatening approach of dragons were stopped by confusion. He raises his hand from his chest and puts it back. “ I'm Steve."

Steve then looks over his shoulder and finds Susan already coming around the house as well as the red dragon. The other ones stayed behind.

Susan used a few curses she heard from the Marshal General earlier to herself. She heard the human try to introduce himself and at that moment likely the best thing he could have done. Susan moved to his side and bowed politely as she learned to do and saw others do to her. You never be discourteous to the queen. “ What is this?"

Susan kept her head down as she responded. “ My Lady this is a human."

The queen keeps here eyes on the human. “ What was it doing?"

Susan dared to look at Steve and he had not moved a muscle. “ Introducing himself to you, My Lady."

The queen looks at Susan and truly notices her. “ You should not be here young one. You there return her to her place."

Susan moved upward slightly. “ My Lady I'm the one that brought this human from their realm. While there I learned their tongue and there would not be an easy or fast way of learning it."

She looked at Susan more closely. Figuring out what her game was. “ You young one should be getting ready to receive the blessings of being queen. This is no way for you to act."

Susan raised up fully. “ If I act like this now would I truly be a good queen then?"

Susan saw something she did not expect. Anger. It was just for a moment and barely happened. If she was not use to seeing it in others she gave disagreeing commands to she would not have recognized it. “ We need your body young one not your mind. You should remember that in future dealings. Now I will pass this insolence this once as you are in the better position and out of all of my personally chosen wing you were the only one that brought a human. If you say this human was trying to introduce itself and you speak their tongue then introduce me as the high queen of this kingdom."

Steve pondered a moment of the meaning of high queen but only looked at Susan in curiosity. He had so many questions. But the dragons were looking at him expecting a response. “ I'm Steve Johnstone. It is a pleasure to meet you."

Instinctively he was about to raise his hand for it to be shook but one thought of who and what he was talking to made him stop. After Susan gave his response and she getting one back he had a feeling his translator was not telling the whole story of what the high queen said. “ She is pleased to see you as well. It is her hope you are as useful as many hope you to be."

After the response the queen says something else. “ She wishes to know what skills you posses."

Steve was about to blurt out he was good with computers but that would mean nothing to the dragons if Susan did not even know what a television was. “ I have some knowledge of sciences. And as you can witness I have medical training."

Susan relayed the message even Steve could tell the queen gave a humored laugh. As expected from that she wished another demonstration. Steve looked around and thought about it. After a minute he told Susan that he needed something from his house and after she relayed the message and the queen gave permission Steve was inside. Just long enough to grab a light project he made in school over a decade ago. To be sure he grabbed a fresh D battery and a light bulb out of the package. He set it in front of the dragons who grew curious of the contraption. Even the queen leaned forward more than she would have been comfortable by guess. As soon as Steve flipped the switch all the dragons but Susan, who had seen it in his house when it had power, backed away surprised. Even startled by a good guess.

“ What sort of magik is this? Light without fire."

Susan moved a little closer to Steve and spoke before he did. “ These devices are common in his realm. If shown to some of the wing expedition they too might say they saw such a thing as they waited for their magik to bring them back."

Steve then said and she relayed not knowing how he understood her, “ My ability is not in the device that gives the light but another that uses the same power as the light. I have some know how in the light and the battery that powers it, even the other stuff that makes it work. Yet I do not know everything. Just 'simple' knowledge."

Susan changed the word basic to simple as it would sound better that way but the rest she left unchanged except a few fords she did not fully understand to those the queen would. The queen returned to her self-glorified pose knowing full well if any saw her out of it it would be their heads if ever spoken about. The others were not as lucky in the ranking but nothing was said to them either. “ If this human has such knowledge then it must be shared with the engineers. This knowledge will challenge the dwarfs way of thinking but they are progressive enough to understand change. Everything of his dwelling will have to be examined. He shall tell his secrets."

Susan looked at Steve and felt sorry but had a thought. “ Such a way will be timely and inefficient. If such things were shared willingly then returned in same condition after examination in an organized manor more could be learned in a shorter time. If you agree My Lady to this plan whatever you desire may be achieved much sooner." The queen and her escort looked angered at Susan again. She instantly realized she overstep her bounds one time too many.

Steve notices Susan cower under the gaze and picked up his device hoping to turn attention back to him. “ I trust you and none other you know. After all your the only one that understands me."

Susan did not turn her head to look at Steve as she spoke. “ That is all the leverage I have. I know the building your home and she wished it destroyed to find out whatever knowledge it holds for herself. I tried to save it but I dared too much. Right now she is figuring my worth and if I am worth keeping around."

Steve stands. “ I'll burn it if harm comes to you."

Susan broke her gaze and quickly grabbed his ankle to not move further. “ Do not do that. That will anger her further and you will be seen more as a liability than an asset. She wishes your mind not your body at this moment."

The queen growls something and Susan growls something back and releases Steve. “ She wishes to know how you would do this. She would kill you before you could take three steps." Steve has an idea and flicks the switch on the circuit again. “ It takes ten times the energy to produce this light as fire would. It holds enough energy to power it for a thousand hours continuous. What if all that energy was released all at once?"

Three of the queens escort immediately backed away. Another one spread her wings to take off but was knocked back on the ground when her wings caught one that was fleeing. The queen leaned forward. “ Prove it human."

Steve was a little startled by her talking to him but got the battery out of it's housing and held it like a rock. “ When the casing breaks it will detonate." Steve got ready to throw it and looked back at the queen. Susan caught his arm. “ You have made your point Steve."

Steve relaxed and put the battery in it's casing. “ This is my home and no one is going to tell me what is going to happen to it if I can help it. I listen to Susan because she I trust. At least she owes me her life and has that debt to pay back."

The queen moved right to Steve and he did not flinch. She growled something before backing away again and taking to her wings. The others soon followed. The red dragon that had been silent and watching the whole time finally growled something and Susan translated it. “ I do not believe the day has come when she submits defeat to something. She would look the fool to killing the human she ordered to be gotten."
