Third chapter of The Search! Enjoy :3
The next morning, the dragon was brutally woken up by a scream. He got up in panic. «What's wrong?!», he asked. «An other griffin!» Tannihn shouted. The dragon looked up, and saw it. As magnificent and scary as the other one. The two friends quickly went to hide under trees and hope that the creature will not notice them. They could see it fly above them. «If it sees us...», Tannihn whispered, «wait for it to get on the ground, and try to bury your claws in its eyes.» The dragon nodded nervously, the griffin was not flying so high and it seemed to be circling the zone where they were hiding. «Kristof should have fucking warned us there were going to be griffins here.», said Firrothe. It kept flying around for a short while and finally went away. They stayed hidden until he was far enough. «You think it's safe now?...» whispered the dragon. «I think it is... but let's walk slowly and carefully». They walked away from the trees and checked the sky, it looked clear. Firrothe was trying to contain his emotions, he was so afraid. He lived because Tannihn had his pack with him, but now it was only the two of them. If a griffin attacked them, they would certainly be killed easily. They carried on walking in the direction of the mountain. According to Kirstof, it would take them about up to two days overall, so they still had a long way to go. Fortunately, they didn't meet any dangerous animal during that day, and when night came they were both tired.
??Kristof was wrong about the walking time. Firrothe and and Tannihn had walked two days and they were still far from the mountain. They didn't encounter a griffin again, but they were always afraid to see one. At night, it was always quiet and peaceful. And every night, Firrothe was tempted by the body of his friend. When he couldn't sleep, he stayed by his side, watching over him and listening to his calm breath. He approached his snout closed to his fur and enjoyed his scent. Somehow, it made him feel good, relaxed. He knew that it was wrong, but he couldn't help it. One night, Tannihn woke up during the night, and saw his friend by his side. He kept silent, and tried to sleep again. However, Firrothe's presence near him made him feel funny. The fact he kissed him once and the fact he stayed close to him, he made him feel like he should do something. He had never felt that way before, and he thought it was wrong, so he turned to his friend and asked him to go to sleep. Every night, that feeling grew stronger, so much so that even during the day when they just walked, they still felt weird. They both knew that something was happening, but didn't dare to do anything. It was dark, the night was silent as usual, and Tannihn decided to talk with Firrothe about whatever was happening between them. He pretended to sleep, knowing that Firrothe would stand next to him. When the latter did it, the wolf, opened his eyes and slowly stood up looking at Firrothe in the eyes. «Don't you think we should talk?...» he said. Firrothe sighed, he knew it was coming, he knew Tannihn would keep quiet about it forever. «Okay, yeah...» «I'm not stupid. I can see that you're in love with me» Tannihn said with confidence. The dragon's face went surprised, he didn't expect his friend to be that direct. «I... What do you know?» he replied, trying to deny it. «I'm not stupid, I've been in love before, I know how it is. Every night you smell me, you stare at me, your behaviour has changed since that night when you kissed me. Don't deny it.», the wolf moved closer to Firrothe, the two snouts were almost touching. The dragon laughed, and looked at his friend in the eyes. «Damn, alright you got me...» he said, finally admitting it. «You're a nice fellah, Firrothe. You're really nice and you're good looking... But you know it can't work. You're going to mate with a female dragon and you'll spend your life with her. When your quest is done I have to find my pack and go back with them... I don't belong with you.» Firrothe struggled to keep his smile, and took a disappointed tone. «Yeah... I know that» «Moreover... We don't even know who you are! You still have no memory of before, and to you it's not even an issue!» «It is an issue! But... I'll take care of it after.» «When? You're going to do what Kristof tells you without questionning it? You're going to keep thinking your amnesia is just a coincidence? Hasn't it occured to you that it might be on purpose, that they've done things to you before?» Firrothe started walking in circles, as if he was annoyed. «I don't want to think about it... I trust Kristof, I believe my memory will get back, I just have to be patient.» Tannihn stared at his friend, slowly walking up to him. «You know nothing, Firrothe.» The dragon didn't say a word, and stayed silent for a moment. Neither of the two friends knew what to say, the silence became opressive. «So...» Firrothe began, «You really don't want to try?» «It's not a matter of wanting», Tannihn replied, «we just can't.» Firrothe's face was full of disappointment, and frustration. He nodded and gave him a false smile before going to lie down. The wolf lied near him and said goodnight.
??For the rest of their journey, they didn't talk about it again. They kept moving towards the mountain, staying careful of any dangerous creature that could appear. They were getting closer to it, and started to wonder how they would climb it. After all, Kristof didn't precise where on the mountain the dragon would be. They often looked in the sky and checked if they would see a dragon flying, but saw none. After quite some walking, they finally reached the end of the forest that had been walking in for hours. Now there was just a vast plain with a long river running though it, and at its end was the mountain. They could at last see it more clearly and they were happy to be near their destination. Their only concern was the fact that no dragon was in sight. Morever, they were in a big landfield with no tree to hide them, therefore if anything bad would happen, they had nowhere to take shelter to. The sky was all blue, not a cloud could be seen and the temperature was quite nice. The scenery appeased them, allowed them to look around and enjoy nature for a while. The river had a pure and clean water, they had no such drink since they started their journey. Tannihn noticed a few rabbits running away, and felt like hunting them. Firrothe told him that he wouldn't mind some food at the moment, so the wolf ran after the wild rodents with his greatest speed. The dragon decided to join him, and aimed for an other rabbit to hunt down. They both caught one, and the few others managed to run away while they killed their preys. Firrothe could taste the meat of it a second time, with less disgust than before: he had got used to it. When the meal was over, they walked along the river that led straight to the beginning of the mountain, it ended in a lake that looks rather small from the distance. As they were walking, they started hearing a familiar sound in the distance. The sound of wings flopping in the air, and it sounded like it came from around the mountain. Firrothe and Tannihn looked at each other, and they share the same thought through their mutual smile: they found the dragon. They walked in the direction where the sounds were coming from, and as it was coming closer, it appeared at last, and it was a griffin. ?? ??Suddenly full of fear, Firrothe couldn't move and Tannihn pushed him into running away with him. The dragon tried to find somewhere to hide, but there were no cave, no tree, no rock. The lake occured to him as an idea, but the griffin would certainly see them before they reached it. It was still worth a try, Firrothe told him to follow him to the lake. Running with all their speed, they heared the griffin scream, and the flopping sound became faster. The two friends made it to the lake and jumped in the water to dive as deep as they could, but to their surprise, they hit its bottom instead of diving: the lake was not deep at all. They both stared at the griffin arriving them quickly, and saw death coming. «Ssermuk!» shouted the creature, before grabbing the dragon with its fierce claws which he shoving in his scales. Firrothe screamed while Tannihn, powerless, tried to run after the griffin. «Let him go!» the wolf shouted. A hope showed up when the griffin quickly lost endurence due to Firrothe's weight, and lost height. The dragon managed to reach his assailant's paw with his jaw and bit him as hard as he could. The pain made the creature let go of his prey and Firrothe fell violently on the ground. The griffin landed near him and tried to grab him again but Tannihn manage to reach him in time and buried his claws in the griffin's back. The latter let a roar of pain before sweeping the wolf away with his powerful paws. «You worthless piece of shit!...» He rushed at the wolf and tried to give a fatal bite, but Tannihn clawed him in the face, and almost touched his eyes. The griffin bled and said incomprehensible words with anger. Tannihn gained confidence. «The worthless piece of shit made you bleed, and he will do it again, and again! Until there's no more blood in your body!» «You made me bleed once, but I promise the next one to bleed won't be me!» The griffin turned around and hit him with his tail, and when the wolf was weakened on the ground, he shoved his claws in his flank and flayed it. Firrothe, still half-unconscious from his fall, heard his friend's screams and managed to get back on his feet. He was weak and had to think quickly, so he reached for the griffin's tail and bit it, before being tossed away by it. «Oh what is it?» the griffin said, «you're hurt, little wolf? You're in pain?» «Fuck you!...», Tannihn growled, trying to defend himself in vain. Firrothe was back to his senses, and remembered what Tannihn told him the last time they saw a griffin. «If it sees us, try wait for it to get on the ground, and try to bury your claws in its eyes.» That was what he had to do. He filled himself with courage, and ran to the creature, climbed on his back and to his head. The griffin turned his head around, and the dragon roared as he shoved his claws right in the eyes. He screamed and hit Tannihn madly, flaying his flank with frenesy. He fell on his side, throwing Firrothe away, and moved his paws in the air, hoping to hit the dragon, and he did. Firrothe took hit after hit, and managed to escape, but he bled a lot. The griffin was now blind but he was not giving up yet, and by listening to Firrothe's pantings he got track of where he was. He rushed to him like an angry taurus and hit Firrothe so hard that he almost passed out. The griffin screamed loudly and ran away. Firrothe, lying on the ground with blood flawing out of flank, struggled to lift his head and saw Tannihn covered with blood. He gathered the strenght he had left and crawled up to him. «Tannihn... are you okay?...» The wolf looked at his friend and could barely move his paws. «Th... thank you...» he said, «I don't know if I'll make it, Firrothe...» The dragon contained his tears and didn't know how to save his friend, he was too weak as well. «No... You're not done... Don't leave me!...» «Just find that dragon... I'm happy I helped you...» «No... No... Don't...» He lied down on Tannihn's belly and cried, begging him to stay alive. They were both weak, and soon the dragon passed out.
