Chapter 1 ~A Sorrowful Beginning ~
A long time ago, before animals began to take on the shapes of humans, a small tribe of wolfs lived. These wolves were a very rare species you see, their fur was silvery almost glowing. The lived deep in the Forests of the Sable Mountains. There in the shaded canopies of the tall and ancient trees my people lived in peace. The pack always looked out for each other and raised their young pups together. It was this clan in which a young female wolf, whose gentleness attracted the eye of every young male wolf there. It was not long until she met her mate, a newcomer who the pack took in. He was looked upon differently from the rest of pack, being an outsider and not born of their lineage. His fur, black as night and his eyes yellow as golden. But regardless of his blood or appearance the young female wolf soon found her self mated with this young outsider. Months passed and unto them a child was born, and that child was me.
As time went by I grew older, I still remember the days as if they weren't so far in the past. Those were times of peace and tranquility, the pride of our pack was strong and we were unchallenged. My father became one of the alpha males, he soon became the guardian of our clan. He assisted the leaders with protecting us and providing food. Everything was at peace and the time seemed perfect, that is until one night.
It was dark and my mother was getting worried because my father and the other hunters hadn't come back yet. What seemed like forever passed when they finally returned, but it wasn't a happy welcome. They came back bloodied and injured badly, my father carrying one of the other hunters on his back, he wasn't moving at all. They had warned us that the Humans attacked them and were on their way now to the clans den. My mother, as well as the lifeless wolf's mate came and carried him deep into the cave and laid him to rest. Looking around I was confused as what was going on, news about the attack spread through the pack. The leader finally spoke up telling us it was no longer safe here and that we must move on immediately. The mother took their pups in their mouth and began heading out while the males stayed behind making sure that everyone got out safely. As the clan began to leave the hunters came yelling to each other like savages, they came with fire and guns. The alpha males did what they good, attacking the humans as much as they could, but still they were no match for the human's weapons. It wasn't long until they couldn't fight any more.
They retreated to protect the females and the young pups that didn't get caught my humans. But sadly they didn't make it to them. Only a few females survived with there pups myself included, our clan was at its end. The few survivors had found a safe place, a pond deep into the forests that wasn't easy to access by humans. That night there was no happiness only sorry and tears, their howls filled the night sky as they cried out in pain and loss for their fallen. Soon silence fell upon the moonlit lake, the night had overcome us all and the escape had worn out the survivors. They curled up with their pups and young and holding them close wanting to protect the only loved ones they had left.
The silence that had embraced the night soon was broke with the sound of something coming through the brush, It was my father badly injured and staggering as he moved toward my mother and I,. My mother hurried to him as he fall to the ground,, his breathing growing fainter and fainter. He looked deep in to my mothers eyes, as if to say "I love you" before they closed one last time, my father was dead. The young wolf laid next to him, her whimpers filled with a sadness as she lay there next to my father. The others, silently hung their heads in respect for the fallen guardian. The moment was halted when the sounds of foot steps, the humans had found us.
My mother angry with them, stood in front of my fathers lifeless body as if to tell the humans that they were to not ever try to get passed her. The other survivors soon began to gather around her preparing to fight for their lives and the lives of their young. The young female wolf, who's gentleness once shone as bright as her fur was swept up into the heat of battle, he teeth biting and tearing at human flesh, doing everything she could to defend the clan. The other joined in but still they were no match for the humans and their weapons. My mother badly injured for a gun shot to the chest carried me away to safety, the other survivors had be killed their young included. She could hardly walk but still she pressed on, she soon finally collapsed, she didn't have much left in her "Run" she told, and I did. I looked back while running only to catch a fading glimpse of the hunters finishing off my mother. I ran as fast as could and took shelter in a hole that had been dug under a tree. I waited their until morning, the only thing I could feel was sadness and pain, my family had been wiped out and I was the only on left. That night was not easy for me but I slept and was tormented by what I had seen.
Dawn had broken over the valley, and the smell of blood still lingered in the air, I awoke and headed back to find my mother, hoping that she was still alive. When I arrived at the pond their bodies were gone, all that was left were the stains of blood in the now dew laden grass. It was if we had never existed, the only traces of my family were what would soon be washed away with coming rain. I howled like I never howled before, my cries filled with such pain and sorrow. Scared and alone I cautiously looked around for anything, looking for an absolution that would never be found. I soon came across my fathers body, apparently the humans had left him for some reason. I laid there against him wanting so much for him to wrap his paw around me once more and hold me close. What was I to do, I was just a young pup, barely knowing how to hunt and to small to kill my own food.
The day went on, and I stayed there next to my fathers side not wanting to leave. My silent sorrow was soon disturbed, emerging from the bushes was a young woman, clad in brown leather pants, a sleeves tunic top and cloak draped over her back, resting under a quiver of arrows. Her hair black like my fathers fur. Angry at what she had done I charged at her biting at her ankle, doing what ever I could with my weak fangs to kill her. Just then I had felt a hand pick me up by the nap of my neck, she had picked me up and I was staring at her face to face. Furious I began to swipe at her but to no avail, I was to far away to do anything. "Calm down little one, I'm not gonna harm you" she said in a soft gentle voice before she set me back on the ground. She began to move toward my father's lifeless body, I quickly ran and stood between the two, they had taken my family and friends remains, and they weren't getting my fathers. "She kneeled down to me and looked with a look of grief in her face. "Is this your father little one?" she asked softly. I sat there growling at her not wanting her to touch him, she reached out and gently began to rub her hand over my head.
I looked at her with a look of confusion in my face , why wasn't she trying to take away his body, why wasn't she attacking me? She lifted me up off the ground and held me close, her hand running down my back slowly over and over again, for some reason I felt safe there in her arms as she held me close. Being tired from the nights restless slumber I slowly drifted off to sleep, curling against her as she carried in her arms as she continued on her way. I had not felt this safe since I last laid against my mother.
I awoke later that night the glow of a fire burning in the stone hearth of what looked like a cabin. Shocked I looked around, not knowing where I was, I backed into a corner whimpering in terror. It was then when I heard a voice "So your awake little one, you looked liked you were having a wonderful dream, you where running". It was her, the human how picked me up why had she brought me here? My thought was interrupted by the smell of fresh meat, I began to sniff the air trying to find out where it was coming from. "Oh you smell your dinner don't you?" she said with a smile. She began to walk into another room so I followed her, wondering where that smell was. On a small handmade dish was a piece of red meat, still fresh, she leaned down and laid it in front of me saying "Here little one eat up, you must be starving" as I sat there gnawing and nibbling away at the elk meat as fast as my little teeth could go, she sat next to me, her voice soft, she said to me, "You know you need a name little one, how about Bicora?" . She continued "You're a very beautiful little pup Bicora, its rare to see a wolf with such silver hair and eyes as blue as ice. My Name is Raven Almasey.
From that moment we were never apart, out of all the pain and sorrow I had suffered because of the humans, one actually showed me compassion and kindness. In a way she saved me, saved me from a death that was only waiting to happen, a death that befalls all pups when they are to young to hunt themselves. Regardless of all the kindness she showed me and all the love I got while she raised me, I could never forget what happened that fateful night so long ago. She raised me to be a hunter and together we hunted, be it food, or anything else. This was a sorrowful beginning, but a beginning regardless, to what my life was going to be.
