Farewell and Hello chapter 4
Abby finally breaks the news to Leon, and the two have a emotional moment together.
Abby was almost asleep when she heard the phone buzz against the top of the nightstand. It was just a single, short vibration that she knew signaled the arrival of a text. With a weary sigh, Abby reached over across the bed and grabbed her phone as she twisted onto her side. Though she had turned the brightness down earlier, the light of the screen still felt blinding as she turned the screen away from her face. With one eye shut, Abby tilted the device back to her face. She half-hoped that the notification was just another piece of spam that she could ignore, but as her single open eye focused, Leon’s name became clear. Abby let out a short sigh as she summoned up the courage to open the message and read its contents. She knew that her fear was irrational, that there was no way for the opossum to have clocked her intent just from the simple message. But regardless, her heart still pounded in her chest. “No problem, I’m off work tomorrow if you want to swing by.” His reply was basic and to the point, and left no indication that he suspected anything was off. Abby let out another sigh, and opened her other eye as she typed out a response. “Okay cool, I’ll try to stop by sometime before noon.” Abby hit send and watched to ensure the text went through before she rolled onto her back, and let the phone settle screen down onto her stomach. She took a few deep breaths as she waited in the dark silence to feel the buzz of another text. But as she felt herself start to drift back into the pleasant embrace of her pillow, the phone remained silent. It only began to vibrate again, hours later as her morning alarm roused the bat from her dream. Her eyes blinked open as she drew in a long inhale followed by an even longer exhale. Abby silenced the alarm, and with the phone still in her hand, performed a full-body, mouth-open stretch. As she relaxed, she forced herself to sit up so as to not immediately fall back asleep. The grogginess faded quickly from her body as she sat there on the edge of the bed, as her weekend alarm gave her a few extra hours of much-needed sleep. Abby looked down at her phone as she woke the screen up. It was only two minutes past ten, still plenty of time to shower before she had to meet with Leon. With another yawn, she stood up off the bed and lifted her arms in another stretch. Afterwards, she let them windmill for a few seconds to regain circulation before she took care of an itch on her backside. And after another yawn, Abby stepped out of her bedroom. The apartment was quiet and empty, with only the dull gray light from the window to illuminate it. Cynthia and Trevor almost always slept in on the weekends. As such, Abby felt confident enough to make the short crossing from her bedroom to the bathroom in nothing but her nightshirt. ‘I just hope he doesn’t lose his shit when I tell him… not that I think he would, but still,’ she thought to herself as she stepped into the bathroom and locked the door behind her. As the water gradually came up to temperature, Abby whisked off her shirt and stood naked in front of the mirror. It had become something of a daily routine for her ever since she found out about her pregnancy. Her belly’s progress was still hardly noticeable to anyone but her. But as she stood there perpendicular to the glass, she could make out the beginnings of a more conspicuous baby bump. ‘Starting to make yourself known there little dude, or chick… still not sure which,’ Abby mused as she rubbed her belly’s new curve. The fur there, which was normally a soft cream color, was cut thin in a large square pattern. It had only recently begun to grow back, though the lighter tone of the skin beneath was still visible through it. The doctors had told her to get used to having a bald patch there, as the regular ultrasounds would require her belly fur to be shaved. As she rubbed that bare spot on her stomach, she recalled the moment, and how it had been then that everything finally began to feel real for her. “I just hope you’re cute,” Abby joked to herself as she gave the bump a light pat. By then steam had begun to swirl in gentle wisps as the water came all the way up to temperature. Abby took an extra moment for her morning pee before she stepped into the shower and allowed the hot water to carry away her troubles and concerns as it soaked through her fur. She allowed herself a moment to just bask in the comfort before she got down to the business of washing herself. Abby let herself hum along to a song she sang in her head as she worked shampoo and then conditioner through her fur. In that little closet-sized space, with nought but a plastic curtain between her and the world, Abby felt truly free from all that worried and bothered her. But as the last of the bubbles swirled around the drain, and the water’s temperature began to taper off, she knew the brief respite had come to an end. With a sigh, Abby shut the water off. She stood in the shower for a few moments to let some of the remaining water drip out of her hair and fur before she stepped out onto the cold tile. Abby wrapped one towel around her hair, and another around her body before she left the bathroom, just as Trevor came walking down the hall. “Mornin’ Abby,” he said in a groggy voice as he rubbed the side of his head. His fur was ruffled, and he was dressed in just a pair of tight blue boxers. “Good morning Trevor, bathrooms free.” The lynx nodded his thanks as the pair stepped past one another. As they did so, Abby’s sensitive nose picked up the lynx’s scent. Both his and Cynthia’s similar but distinct smells had long since become familiar to her, almost to the point of becoming lost in the general background of their apartment. But there in the hallway, Trevor’s scent stood out to her, as it bore the unmistakable accord of sex. It seemed to radiate off of his fur, as if he and his mate had just finished only a few moments before. It was something she’d smelled on both him and Cynthia rather often, though usually with the added note of latex. Though curiously, that time it was not present in Trevor’s scent profile. ‘Ugh, you’ve got more important stuff to worry about today than what they’ve been up to, get a grip!’ Abby told herself as she entered her bedroom. With a sigh, she flopped down on her back onto the bed, and let the towel around her body fall open. Again, Abby found herself wishing for a ceiling fan as she let her fur air-dry for a few moments. She soon forced herself back to her feet, and finished drying herself off with the towel. Her fur felt much lighter, and softer to the touch after the thorough wash and treatment. Even in her bedroom’s dim lighting it shone with a lovely copper-like radiance on the brown parts of her body. It seemed almost a shame to cover it up with clothes, Abby thought to herself as she ran her fingers through it. She clicked her tongue and bounced her hands off her hips and scanned around the room as she contemplated a suitable outfit for the meeting with Leon. It had to be something casual but not low-effort and frumpy, pretty, but not ostentatious. Abby let out a sigh as she mentally flipped through her wardrobe, but failed to come up with a suitable combination. ‘You’re stressed and overthinking again. Just start with some underwear and go from there,’ she told herself as she bent down in front of her dresser. The first pair that Abby plucked from the drawer were simple black briefs with a white waistband. They were comfortable, and sexy enough she figured. But more so when paired with a baggy t-shirt while lounging on the couch. As she held them up, Abby’s mind replayed the words that Cynthia had used to describe such garments: “depression panties.” With that, they were quickly rolled back up and tossed into the drawer with the others. Abby slid it shut, as all of her other pairs in there were of a similar style. Still naked, Abby put her hands on her hips as her ears pinned back in annoyance. ‘I was planning to just burn these!’ Abby mused as she walked over to the closet. Inside, under her shirts and tops were stacked the plastic totes that contained the clothes she’d retrieved from Leon’s house the day they had hooked up. The bottom two contained normal clothes, but the top one housed her entire collection of sexy underwear and lingerie. They had all been purchased either by, or for the benefit of her unfaithful ex-boyfriend, Reece. After their break up, the items inside had only served as continuous reminders of his infidelity. Abby grumbled to herself as she picked up the blue plastic tote and set it down on her bed. She tossed the lid to the side, and began to rummage through the lacy contents. ‘Hmm. pink or blue were never really my colors… or green, at least not this green, way too bright…’ Reece’s tastes were evident as she searched through the various pieces of lingerie. She discarded each one in turn as her mind tied it back to a specific memory of the last time she’d worn it. Soon, half of the tote’s contents were scattered about on the bed as Abby’s hope began to fade. She had just begun to consider consigning herself to the depression panties when she pulled out a pair that caught her eye. They were a beautiful dark red in the front, with a thin strip of black lace around the top. But the backside was what truly piqued the bat’s interest. They were a full brief cut, but rather than solid, opaque fabric like the front, the back was made of a delicate, sheer material that was almost perfectly see-through. Embroidered into it were thin vines with small, dime-sized red roses on black vines. The pattern was minimal however, and would allow the wearer’s lover to still receive a nearly unobstructed view of their rear. ‘Damn, I forgot about these… I do seem to remember Reece not liking them though, now that I think about it,’ Abby mused as a wiry smile began to cross her face. With her mind squarely made up, she set them aside and quickly found the matching bra. It too was made of the same sheer fabric, and also came with the floral embroidery and lace border. Abby’s heart began to thump with excitement as she slipped into the bottoms and worked her tail through the loop. She was pleased to find that they still fit comfortably, as did the bra as she secured it to her chest. There was a small mirror atop her dresser that, if she stood in the right spot, allowed Abby to get a view of her whole body. “Huh, not bad looking,” she said to herself with a grin as she examined her backside. The bottoms were comfortable but still flattering, and showed off the cream-colored heart pattern on her butt quite well. The fabric on the back was wonderfully light and airy, so much so that it felt almost as if she wore nothing at all back there. Up top, her chest still fit into the soft, see-through cups, though she knew that would change as her pregnancy progressed. Abby promised herself to order a new pair once her body settled down afterwards. ‘Now if only I had someone to show them off too,’ she thought with annoyance as she pulled her eyes away from the reflection. Abby found that the rest of her outfit came easy after that decision. Her look was completed with a dark green, thigh-length pleated skirt, a cream colored top, and black shoes. It was a cute and fairly innocent look on the outside, while underneath the fancy underwear gave the bat a much-needed boost in self confidence. Though the sheer back of her panties, coupled with the skirt did cause her to feel something of a breeze up her backside. “Hey Abbs! Bathroom is open if you still need it!” Cynthia’s voice caught Abby’s attention as the bat turned her attention back to the small mirror. “Okay, thanks!” The outfit was simple but elegant, and showed just enough effort, Abby thought. And after she slipped into some sneakers and spritzed on some pleasantly sweet, floral perfume, she exited her bedroom, this time with an honest smile on her face. After a quick stop in the bathroom to brush her hair, Abby grabbed her purse and keys off the counter. “Alright, I’m heading out!” She called back into the apartment. “Okay babes, good luck!” Cynthia replied from her bedroom. “Heh, yeah I’m gonna need it,” Abby said under her breath as she closed the front door behind her. She took a deep breath in front of the apartment as her brief moment of confidence came to an end. Each step down the stairs seemed to resonate louder in her ears as she descended. Once in her car, Abby sat behind the wheel and stared out over the hood as she worked up the courage to put the key into the ignition. And as the engine warmed up, and the AC cooled the cabin down, she slid her phone out of her pocket. “On my way over now,” she typed out to Leon. Abby didn’t wait for a response as she set the phone down in one of the cupholders and buckled her seatbelt. The traffic she encountered as she drove out of town was rather dense, though the upbeat pop music on the radio eased the tension, and allowed Abby to sing along as she worked through the jams. But as civilization gradually morphed into green country, the heavy traffic faded until she effortlessly zoomed down the nearly empty backroads. She was relieved as she slowed for Leon’s driveway, to see that only his truck sat parked in the lane. She didn’t bother to consider what Reece was up to, as long as he was somewhere else. Abby eased the car to a stop and put it in park as her heart began to thump. ‘Alright, let's go,’ she told herself mentally as she grabbed her purse out of the passenger seat and her phone out of the cupholder. Grass clippings lay scattered across the concrete path up to the front door, and the scent of a freshly mowed lawn still hung in the air. Abby took deep breaths to steady herself as she made her way up to the home’s entrance. It was all so familiar, and at the same time, so alien. Abby knew where each paving slab had shifted out of place, and so knew where to step to avoid a trip. It was a strange feeling, to be so familiar with a place that at the same time, felt so distant and foreign. The front door had just as many old spider webs and bugs stuck to it as she remembered. In the past she had simply walked right in through it without a care, though Abby was unsure if Leon would still allow such a thing. The matter was quickly resolved however, as when she approached the front door it opened for her. “Hey Abby! C’mon in!” Leon said as he stood in the doorway with a polite and welcoming smile on his snout. Abby smiled somewhat awkwardly and looked down at her shoes, her hands clutching her purse as she stepped up onto the porch. Leon stood to the side as Abby walked past him, her nose immediately filled with the scent of glass clippings and sweat. It was a rather comforting masculine smell that was strangely intoxicating. It was the scent of hard work and stability, of the things men ought to be, Abby thought. “So uh… how’ve you been recently?” He asked as Abby set her purse down on the counter in the kitchen. “I’ve been okay I suppose.” Abby let more of her southern accent come out as she spoke to the rural opossum, who had a proper drawl of his own. She’d kept it bottled up for so long at school and then later at work, that what had once been so normal in her childhood, then felt strange and foreign to her ears. “Just okay?” “I made a big sale yesterday at the store, which has helped a lot, but…” “I get it, life’s still tough. I get up at four thirty every morning for work,” Leon said with a chuckle. “I guess I can’t complain too much, it's just…” Abby let her sentence trail off as the correct words escaped her. She wracked her brain for the best way to broach the topic, but none of the approaches her mind came up with felt quite right. “Yeah… and I’d like to tell you that Reece feels awful about what he did, and what happened, but…” Leon shrugged his shoulders and let out a sigh as he also let his words fall away. Abby mirrored his sigh as a heavy silence fell over the pair. She contemplated simply reaching into her purse and just slapping the envelope with the ultrasound pictures down on the counter. It would have been quick, like ripping off a bandage, but Abby hesitated, and Leon began to speak. “So, you said something about still having some things here? I looked around last night and couldn’t find anything that stood out.” Abby took a deep breath as she realized that it had become time to reveal her deception. “I’m sorry Leon, I um… I just needed to talk to you about something important, and I didn’t want to do it over the phone.” Abby folded her ears back and spoke as softly and apologetically as she could. Leon’s expression shifted to one of curiosity mixed with a perceptible degree of dread. “So this ain’t about something you left here, is it?” he asked in a more stern voice. ‘It's more about something I took away with me,’ Abby thought, though kept the comment to herself. “No… It's not.” Leon moved to speak, but before the opossum could get any words out, Abby reached into her purse and gently laid the envelope down on the counter in front of him. “What’s that?” “Just open in,” Abby replied nervously as she shifted her weight from one foot to the other. The sound of the paper sliding against itself grated on Abby’s nerves as she waited anxiously for Leon’s reaction. Leon lifted the first slide up, his eyes narrowed, and then went wide as he realized what he was looking at. “Oh fuck,” he cursed, almost under his breath. “Yeah…” “Not to sound like a dick, but are you sure it's…” Leon looked up from the picture and right into Abby’s eyes. He didn’t need to finish the question for her to know what he meant. “Yes, it's yours. I haven’t had it unprotected with anyone else since Reece.” Abby spoke in a tone that was still soft, but bore a firm conviction that couldn’t be challenged. “Shit… God, I’m sorry Abby. I didn’t mean for…” “No it’s okay, it’s not your fault. I instigated it and didn’t ask for a condom or anything.” “Yeah but I should have been more responsible, I mean… fuck.” A part of Abby wanted to agree with the self-deprecating statement and to admonish the older man for not being more careful with her, and for prioritizing his own pleasure over her safety. But Abby knew deep down that she shouldered just as much of the burden as he did, and that shifting the blame away from herself wouldn’t fix any of her problems. “It’s too late to worry about any of that now,” Abby said as she slid the picture back into the envelope and put the whole thing back into her purse. Leon gave another long exhale as he rubbed the bridge of his snout. “It’s still my fault. I should have just said no, but I was still mad at Reece… it was just so stupid of me and I’m sorry, for whatever that's worth to you right now.” “Leon it’s okay, I’m not mad at you,” Abby said in a gentle, conciliatory tone as she reached out and gently held his forearm. “You ought to be.” “Maybe you’re right and I should be, but I’m not, and that’s the truth.” Abby put a bit more emphasis behind her voice that time. It seemed to do that trick as Leon picked his head up out of his hands. “Alright then, if you say so.” Abby opened her mouth to reply, but that time it was Leon who spoke first. “So what are you thinking you might do? I know you’re staying with your friend in town, have you spoken to her about this?” “Cynthia? Yeah she knows, she’s been helping me out a lot actually. But to answer your question, I guess that's part of why I wanted to see you today.” “Well that doesn’t really answer my question, but I get what you mean.” Abby said nothing for a moment, as she once again struggled with what to say. “I just don’t want to do this alone.” “I understand.” Abby dipped her nose as she broke away from Leon’s gaze. Her whole body felt as if it were shrinking there in front of him. Her throat felt constricted as she struggled with her unbalanced emotions. Leon said nothing as he waited for the girl to find her words again. “And I had just met a really nice new guy when I found out. It just all seems so cruel at times, but then I look at those pictures and… I don’t know.” “Its a lot of new emotions for you I’m sure. I remember feeling strange too, the first time I saw Reece like that.” “Yeah… it was a lot for me when I saw it on the screen at the office,” Abby said with a nervous chuckle. Silence again descended on the pair, as both of them looked down at their shoes. Abby twisted her shoe a little against the tile as a single tiny ant crawled around in front of it. “So uh, this new guy you mentioned, is he uh…” “Gone? I don’t know, maybe… probably. He said he wanted some time to think about it, but…” “Yeah… I wouldn’t hold my breath there,” Leon said with a considerate, but firm conviction. “I’m not, and I don’t blame him. I know I can’t ask that of someone so soon into a relationship, but it still hurts.” Abby sniffed back a tear at the thought of her relationship with Jason, and how it all seemingly was upended before it had a chance to flourish. “Oh I’m sure it does kiddo, but listen, things have a way of working themselves out.” Abby took a deep breath and tried her best to steady herself, though she couldn’t hold back the single tear that broke free and streaked down her cheek. “Thats what everyone says, but if I’m honest it doesn’t help much.” She tilted her head back and looked up at the ceiling in a doomed attempt to restrain her tears. The feeling of each one as it slid down and wetted her fur only made Abby even more frustrated as she slowly lost control of herself. “Hey, it’s alright, I’m sorry,” Leon said as he stepped around the counter towards her. His voice was barely a whisper as he wrapped the bat up in a hug. He rubbed Abby’s back as she tucked her nose into his shoulder, and finally let herself cry. “You know I’ll do whatever I can for you,” Leon consoled as he rocked gently from side to side. “I need… I need somewhere to raise this baby that isn’t a tiny apartment,” Abby said over the sobs. She felt a long exhale from Leon as he took the time to choose his words carefully. Though the long pause alone was enough to give Abby her answer. “Honey, you know that ain’t gonna work, I’m still close with my son. You moving back in here wouldn’t help either of us, you know that.” Leon’s scent filled her nose as she breathed it in through his shirt. His aura, which at once was so comforting and alluring, was then frustrating and painful, like a nasty and sarcastic joke at her expense. “I just… I can’t do this by myself!” Abby wailed into Leon’s shoulder as he patted her on the back. “Shhhh, you’re not going to be by yourself, you have Cynthia and hopefully this other guy will-” “Yes I will be! Everyone says that it's going to be okay, that I just have to do this or do that or whatever, but it's all bullshit! Y’all just say that to make yourselves feel better!” Abby’s voice once again raised to a yell and spat venom, just as she had done with Cynthia, but instead directed out towards Leon. “It doesn’t matter anyway… If Jason was smart he’d have skipped town by now rather than waste his time on some dumb whore who got herself-” “Hey!” The man’s sharp exclamation caught Abby off guard as she felt their bodies suddenly separate. His hands were clamped firmly on her shoulders as he held her out in front of him at arm’s length. Leon wore a stern, fatherly expression as he looked Abby directly in the eye. “Do NOT talk like that, Abby! You are not a whore, you hear me? You're an intelligent, beautiful young lady with a bright future. I said you can’t move in here, but I didn’t say that I wasn’t going to help you. I share in the responsibility for making this child, and I’ll share in the responsibility of raising it too.” Abby’s lip quivered as Leon brought her back into a hug. That time, he held the back of her head as she tucked herself under his snout. “I’m sorry Leon, I shouldn’t have yelled at you like that,” Abby said through her tears as they restarted in earnest. “It's okay, you’re just hurt, that's all.” “No, it's not okay… I yelled at Cynthia like that too! I just… I feel awful.” “Shhh, I know you didn’t mean it, just hush for a minute and take some deep breaths, you’ll start to feel better.” “Mhm… I’ll try,” Abby said, her voice barely a squeak. The pair stood like that for several minutes as Abby gradually calmed down, and her sobs became gentle sniffles. When Leon released his grip and the two parted, there was a large wet spot on his shirt left there by her tears. “So since I’d really like to avoid you suing me for child support, I’ll just make it easy for you,” Leon said calmly as he leaned his elbows against the counter. “What do you mean?” Abby asked as she wiped away the last of her tears. “Well, I started this college fund for Reece back when he was born, but the dumbass never went. I was going to use the money to build you two a little house when you got married but… you know.” “Yeah, I know,” Abby replied with a slight chuckle. “And since he’s fucked it up twice now, I think that money might serve you better than him. Now I don’t remember exactly how much is in there, but it should help you out.” “Leon, I-I… I can’t take your savings, that wouldn’t be right.” “It's not my savings, I have retirement through my job and all that. If I used this money for myself I’d probably just spend it on booze, trucks and women, and if I gave it to Reece, well… that's probably also what he’d use it for.” Both of them shared a much-needed laugh at the comment, as the mood in the kitchen began to lighten. “That’s more than I have even the right to ask for Leon, really,” Abby said as her ears flicked back to their usual position. “Well, it's the least I can do for you Abby.” “Heh, the least you could do is nothing,” she replied with a chuckle. “Okay, the least I can do while still feeling somewhat good about myself, how’s that?” Leon said with a laugh of his own. Abby snorted and playfully rolled her eyes. “So uh, I guess I’ll send you the first check when you have all the baby stuff you want picked out. And then when after it's born I’ll send one a month until the money runs out, does that sound fair?” Abby took a moment to answer as she felt an enormous weight lift off her soul. “I really really appreciate it, Leon. That's going to help a lot, more than I can put into words.” Leon put his right hand on Abby’s shoulder and gave it a reassuring squeeze. “It's peace of mind,” he said gently. “Exactly.” Once more the two stood silently, without any tension between them. Abby was just about to grab her purse and make to leave, when she noticed Leon suddenly perk up. “Oh! I almost forgot! You did actually leave something here, let me go get it!” Leon said, somewhat energetically as his eyes suddenly widened. Abby watched with curiosity as he disappeared down the hallway to his bedroom. Leon reappeared a few moments later with his right hand behind him. It was only as he approached that he brought it around to his front and held it out. “Ah, my um… old underwear,” Abby said as she took the red and black striped panties from him. “I found ‘em behind the dryer the other week and gave ‘em a wash for ya’ I uh… didn’t know if you’d come back again,” Leon replied as he rubbed the back of his head like a nervous teenager. His awkwardness in that moment briefly reminded Abby of what Reece had been like when they’d first met, how he’d been nervous to the point of shaking. ‘Well at least I know where he got it from now,’ she thought to herself as she tucked the underwear into the remaining space in her purse. “You could have just thrown them out, but thank you,” Abby said as she allowed herself a smile. “Ah well, ya know…” Abby gave another playful roll of the eyes while Leon tried his best to not appear embarrassed. “Alright then, I guess I’d better get outta here, huh?” Abby asked rhetorically with a long exhale. “Thanks for giving me the news in person Abby, and uh… I’m not sure what your plan is as far as involving me, and that's totally up to you to decide, I just want you to know that I wouldn’t be opposed to it.” Abby smiled, and took Leon’s hand in hers. “I think that would be lovely.” The pair shared a warm look of mutual understanding before Abby stood up on her toes and planted a soft kiss on Leon’s cheek. “See ya’ around,” she said with a slight smirk. “Heh, yeah… see ya.” The walk to the car was far easier for Abby that time. Leon stood on the front porch as she walked down the path towards her vehicle. The pair shared a wave as Abby sat down in the driver's seat, he only left and went back inside as she began to reverse out. As she pulled onto the road, and Leon’s house began to shrink in the rear view, Abby let out a long sigh of relief. For the first time in a painfully long while, a natural smile shone on her face as she reached down and turned the radio up.
