The Delta Devil
In the shadows of a technical city, called Navineo, a game of heroes and villains take place for the sake of the city. One of the vigilantes eagerly watched over from above, waiting for a repeating reunion under the heavy rain.
In the night of the bustling streets of Navineo, lights from the electronic billboards shine down on them while the citizens and tourists continue their life. Standing on top of the tallest skyscraper in one of the plazas was a helmed grey cat, looking down on the crowded night streets. Rain poured on the cat’s blue oceanic happi draped over his black leather armor, his robotic helmet’s digital face scanning for targets, and his red, torn scarf flowing in the wind. His blue digital eyes soon turned red as a pair of blue, glowing sabers digitized into existence. He leapt off the tower, diving towards one of the alleys hidden away from the blinding lights.
He silently lands on his feet, in front of a group of thugs surrounding a dark blue grey cougar with a headband decorated with three blue gemstones and a white tiger with green, glowing stitches sewn on his neck. Both were fully armed, the tiger with an electrifying stun baton and the cougar wielding an orichalum knife. The cougar’s orange eyes widened as soon as he saw his savior before calmly taking a deep breath before taking a stance. “Nice to see you again Delta Devil,” the cougar loudly cheered, “thought you’d never show.”
“Y’know you should’ve texted me when you arrived,” DD exasperated with a digitized voice of annoyance. He puts on a stance as half the thugs split off to fight him, as DD’s sabers transformed into a staff. DD immediately used his weapon to sweep his enemies off their feet as he leapt his way over to the duo’s sides. “But it's nice to see you again Dwight. Let’s take care of these goons so I can escort you and your friend to safety.”
“Just like the old days, right partner,” Dwight reminisced, getting just a nod in response followed by the staff turning back into sabers again. As soon as the three were getting closer in, they took action, with both the cougar and cat taking the charge whilst the tiger supported them with their magic. The cat attacked first, taking out the weaker thugs with a large sweep of digitized energy as the cougar quickly followed up by carving runes on the stronger looking ones with his knife. The tiger brings the cougar and cat back with a gust of wind, bringing them close again.
“Dwight,” DD called out, motioning towards one of his sabers. The cougar eyes sparkled immediately, nodding before the cat handed him his right digital blade. The vigilante quietly started counting down, marking and sharing the order of targets to his companion. “Go,” he commanded, he and Dwight immediately started charging in together, slashing and protecting each other from harm. The tiger quickly followed Dwight, with both felines making their way towards the alley’s exit and away from their assailants. Once DD got close to them, the cougar pressed a hidden switch on the digital blade, a long, thin thread revealed itself, following the path that DD and Dwight took, immediately tying up each of the assailants. “Thugs have been apprehended,” the cat stated with a single glance, “Dwight, meet me at the usual spot, I’ll go file a report so someone can take these guys in.”
“Will do DD,” the cougar happily agreed, “want me to order the usual?” He watched his friend simply nod before dragging the curious tiger away. Sirens blared as the authorities made their way to the scene, finding only the tied up thugs. The vigilante stands on the corner of the building, accessing the police work with a hologram screen and cashing in the reward before taking his leave.
He made his way to a cozy, illuminated cafe, finding his two allies sitting in a booth beside the jukebox, rushing over to them. The two were having a little chat, with the tiger holding onto some square buzzer, blinking every 10 seconds. “Are you two ok,” the cat queried, performing a quick scan on the two. The cougar lightly patted the side of the helm, jolting, yet soothing DD.
“We’re fine, partner,” Dwight assured with a calming voice, “I patched the both of us up already, just little scrapes and bruises on me. Only needed a salve.” The cougar’s brow raised a bit more before notifying, “by the way, your helmet is running out of charge.”
“I knnooww,” DD moaned with his head tilting down in a bit of shame. He takes out a cord from his sleeve, hands it over to Dwight to hold it, then takes off his helmet, revealing his true face.
He was a grey cat, ashen red patterns painted his face, a line beneath his green Eyes. From the forehead were three striped lines that go down, stopping right above his eyebrows. His left ear was notched, as if it was roughly clipped off, yet they were still soft to the touch as it flicked from the kitchen noises. He takes the cord from Dwight, plugging it into the helmet before plunging the other end to a wall socket. “...May I,” the cat curtly pleaded, staring directly at Dwight, who simply nodded in response and made space for him, “thank you.” He sat down, helmet in his lap as he focused his vision directly on his partner.
“So…who is your friend,” the white tiger awkwardly inquired, “is he the guy we’re supposed to meet?”
“Yes he is,” the cougar happily answered, hugging the cat close, “Mungo, meet Jasper! Jasper, meet Mungo! Mungo and I met at this place where I started residing temporarily.” Jasper simply waved, awkwardly smiling at his friend’s friend, who waved back with a calming smile.
“It’s nice to meet you Jasper,” Mungo continued, “Dwight has been a very good traveling companion and writing buddy. We’ve been exchanging our works and going over some mistakes we needed to fix.” The cat beamed from hearing it before opening his mouth.
“I-I…W-W…” the cat stammered, his eyes quickly filled with panic before quickly quieting himself. Sensing the cat’s shyness, Dwight continued for him, holding onto his hand as the two shared a glance of each other.
“What he wants to say is, thank you,” Dwight finished, lightly petting the embarrassed cat. “He gets really shy without his helmet on and he’s sorry if it causes any problems.” The cat nods his head violently as he desperately watches his helm charging up. “Though once he gets used to you and Mango, he’ll open up a bit more. For now, he’ll listen and I’ll let you know if he wants to say something. Is that alright?”
“Oh that’s fine,” Mungo agreed before the buzzer in his hand started vibrating violently. He looked over towards the staff before getting out of the booth. “I’ll go get us our order,” Mungo bubbled, “you two stay there and catch up with each other.” He swiftly walked away, leaving the two felines close to each other, side-by-side.
“...I miss this,” Jasper cooed, snuggling the cougar close.
“Same here,” Dwight purred, stroking the cat’s delicately clean fur. “Your fur is very soft, just like how I remembered it.”
“Yours too,” he breathed, “very soft…so mind sending me those writings to me? I…I kinda been rereading your old stuff since I’ve caught up. I do have some notes for you to look over too, just like before.”
The cougar beamed at his partner before lovingly nuzzling the cat. “Of course!”
“…Why’d you bring your friend here anyway? I thought it’d be just the two of us.”
“Oh yeah, I was wondering if you could check on his robot,” the cougar responded, looking over at his friend. “He’s shut down at the moment, but we’ll turn him on when we come to your place.”
“Is there anything wrong with it?”
“No, not at all. I want to see if you can learn anything about him. Mungo got him suddenly by showing up in front of his door one day fully operational and stuff. It acts on its own and has its own personality from what I’ve seen from him.” The cat furrowed his brow, not really believing what he just heard.
“So a rune bot,” the cat wondered before shaking his head, “I’ll take a look when we head back.” He examined his robotic mask once again, then looked back at the tiger coming back with a tray tray of food and drinks. “Y-Your friend is back.”
Both felines focused their attention back on Mungo, quickly putting down the tray on the table before sitting back to where he was. The white tiger grabbed the sandwich with ham and pineapple between the slices while the cougar took his toast covered in sliced apple slices, bacon, and maple butter. The ashen cat was left with a wrapped toasted tortilla, snatching it off the tray before quickly eating it down and sipping down his drink til it was empty. He puts on the robot helm, ignoring the concern painted on the white tiger’s face, and turns it back on, displaying the blue digital smiling face.
“There we go,” he gurgled with a bit of a burp, “excuse me for that. I saw my helm charged, so I ate quickly. Makes it easier for us to talk after all.”
“Oh you don’t need to do that,” Mungo assured the cat, “though I guess you knew I’d have some questions, right?” DD nodded, leaning back on his seat. “So Dwight told me that you’re a freelance vigilante, is that any different than a mercenary?”
“Yeah, it’s more of a formal title, it’s my way of getting official gigs here in order to get paid,” DD answered. “The city offered me to become a Hero, but I turned them down because of personal reasons.” He noticed the tiger’s confusion, then stared at the cougar, who looked away immediately. “I see Dwight didn’t explain much about this city. In short, this whole city is an arena, one established to cut down the rising crime rates. A big territorial game of superheroes and supervillains with a mix of heroes trying to be number 1.”
“Isn’t that kinda dangerous for the fighters,” Mungo asked, thinking more of the safer arenas in Ezriul’s cities and towns. “Most arenas I’ve seen usually prevent fighters from harming each other.
“It is, but the city covers the damages,” DD casually replied, “they also heavily penalize heroes who harm any civilians in the process. Even more so if the civilian was the one who asked for help.” He looked over at Dwight who was lovingly staring back. “Heroes will get any notifications for calls of help, we go do it, provide evidence, and then we get paid for it with money and points. The more points I rack up, the better titles I get as a hero and eventually I’ll be on the leaderboards.”
“Oh so how you found Dwight and I was because-“
“I sent the request,” Dwight slyly boasted with a smile. “More specifically, I requested only DD to come. Us citizens are allowed the option to call for specific heroes for help, except the higher ranked ones, they’re saved for more drastic situations.” He hugged the helmed cat, the digital face soon turning pink. “Probably why my great hero hasn’t ranked up, despite the high pay. He wants to be available when I call him whenever I’m in the city.”
“No, well, not all of it,” DD corrected, “the higher heroes get on my nerves and if I ranked up, I wouldn’t be able to help the people that really need it. What the system should be doing instead of helping the richer folks.”
“Ah I get it,” Mungo nodded thinking of his past, “speaking of, why did you become a vigilante in the first place?”
The feline’s ears spiked up, as he hunched over a bit. “D-Dwight was the reason I wanted to be a vigilante,” DD confessed, his helmet’s face turning pink. Wanting to explain more, the cat hid his face away from his best friend. “He rescued me from a kidnapping some years ago. I was going to be trafficked and sold off somewhere far away, but Dwight came to save me, all battered and bruised. That whole experience and seeing Dwight heavily injured, it made me want to be stronger to protect both him and the city.” Mungo looked over to the cougar, who was reminiscing along.
“Yeah, I still remember those days,” the cougar let out with a mix of fear and joy, “I spent all day looking for you, even abandoned my office job, hoping to find you again. I’d eventually found a clue that led straight to the gang holding you. I probably should’ve thought of a plan, but all I cared about was making sure you were safe again.”
“I know, it was the first time I saw you go so feral,” the cat added, causing the cougar to blush as the cat scooted closer to his side. “I missed you, y’know, it's been a bit lonely at home ever since you left, but I made sure your studio was the way it was, just like before.” The cat leaned his head against the other feline, both purring from each other’s touch.
“Oh, you two are that close,” Mungo curiously inquired some more.
“Yeah…we’re dating actually, he’s my spark and I’m his muse,” Dwight revealed as he hugged his partner close. “Though since I’ve been traveling around the world, we’re in a long-distance, open relationship. I try to visit him at least once a month if I can.”
“Yeah, speaking of, where were you last month,” the cat interrogated, his digital face turning red immediately, “you disappeared on me over comms when you said you were checking out some ruins and went silent on me until last week.”
“Oh shit, yeah, sorry about that,” Dwight quickly apologized, “there were some runic automatons that scrambled my HUD Item. I was going to text you when I got back to port, but a lot of things happened and I kinda forgot... I'm sorry.”
After taking a deep breath, Jasper sighed, “it’s fine, I’ll check your HUD for any damages. I’m just happy you’re ok. Even more now that you’re here with me.” The digital face turned into a beating pink heart before going to a white question mark. “By the way, you’re here because you want me to check on your bot, right? Dwight told me about it, but I want to make sure.”
“Yeah, Dwight told me you’re into machines, so I thought you might find something out about him.” A beeping sound soon came from the cat’s robotic helmet, a checkmark soon replacing the screen.
“Alright, just clocked out,” he nonchalantly stated, no worries in his voice, “once we’re done eating, we’ll head to my base in the city.”
“Awww we’re not going to our apartment,” the cougar teasingly whined with a pout, “it’s been ages since I laid in our comfy bed.”
“Well you just have to wait longer dear,” the cat lovingly soothed, “buses back to port won't come til later. Besides, it’s been ages since you saw the old hideout. Aren’t you curious how it looks now?”
“A bit, you still have that down there right,” Dwight inquired, followed by a nod from the cat as the tiger questioned what the two were referring to. “Good, we’ll head straight there then.”
The three felines soon departed from the cafe, walking through the dim alleyways led by the vigilante. Stumbling upon the back of a club, the cat pulled out a holographic menu, inputting in a scrambled 12-digit code. The floor in front of them quickly breaks down into a set of stairs, the cougar’s eyes sparkled with awe as the three descended into a spacious, dark warehouse, lights automatically turning on to revel in the hero’s base.
The monitors connected to a computer flickered on, displaying the map of the city marked various points of interests, system diagnostics of the various tech scattered, and security footage of the building. The table beneath them flips over, revealing a workstation and a bowl, soon filled with snacks as a little drone hovered over to deposit its load. Machines whirred to life, setting itself to maintenance mode before becoming operational. The most prominent thing in the room was laid on the couch, a giant, fluffy, stuffed, orange tiger plush, one usually seen in arcades as a grand prize. The cougar squealed seeing it, immediately dashing over to it and burying his head into the fuzzy stomach, purring happily and carelessly.
“Stripes,” the feline cheered, “you’re as fluffy as I remembered!” The white tiger looked over to the cat, who was smiling at his partner’s affectionate snuggles.
“ We went to the arcade for our first date. He’s the stuff animal I won for him,” DD revealed. “He asked for it when he immediately laid eyes on it, so I tried getting it. Took a bit, but got that one pretty skillfully.”
“You hacked it with your personal scrambler,” Dwight loudly corrected, embarrassing the cat, “all for me! Had to keep watch, but it was totally worth getting the snuggly kitty!”
“…Yeah, take your bot out and make yourself home,” the cat diverted, making his way to his workshop. The white tiger strolled around, curious looking at the whirring machines. He stops at the couch, pulling out red robotic parts from his bag, putting them close to each other on the floor. He reached around his own neck, pressed on his glowing green surgical scars with one hand, and tapped the top of the bot's head with another, causing the red robot to boot itself up before building up its body.
“Checking systems,” the red, robotic tiger announced, his digital eyes spiraling before returning to its default state. “Mango is back and ready for action,” he declared, startling the cat at the computer. “Oooo where are we today Mungo?”
“At…We’re in Dwight’s friend’s base,” Mungo politely answered, gesturing to DD. “His name is Jasper, but he goes by DD or Delta Devil when he has his helmet on. He’s going to perform a check up on your systems real quick. DD, meet Mango, my bot that I sometimes wear in battle.”
The red robot turned, his head popping right off as it flew towards DD, scaring the vigilante as they stared each other in the face. “Nice helmet,” Mango complimented, bouncing around in a nodding way, “nice to meet you DD!” He stuck out his long metallic tongue, waiting for the feline to shake on it.
“T-Thanks? It’s…nice meeting you too,” Delta responded, hesitantly shaking the tongue. He turned directly to Dwight, who was lounging snuggly between the plush’s arms. “I see why you two went to me for this, this sure is a unique bot. I’ll make this quick. This won’t hurt, I promise you that.” He took out a tablet from the desk and started fiddling with it as blue light briefly surrounded the bot’s head and body, freezing them as holograms soon quickly surrounded the cat. “…Hey Mungo, are you linked to him by any chance?”
“Only when I turn him on and off. Once he’s on, I just let him do his thing. Why do you ask?”
“Cause almost every necessary component that keeps Mango running hasn’t been connected since last year.” He looked over at the white tiger with a bit of concern for his partner. “Yet the bot lied about his system diagnosis, has he been saying stuff like that for a while.
“Y-Yeah, Mango never complained about his parts, so I always assumed he knew what he was doing.” The tiger soon followed with another question, one made with concern for his friend. “Mango must’ve been straining himself just to protect me. So could you help him and reconnect all his parts?”
“Of course, I’ll even upgrade them,” the cat obliged, turning off the pad, freeing the robot. “Ok Mango, would it be alright if you shut down again? I’ll need to perform proper maintenance on you.”
“Boooo again,” a robotic whine came out, “I don’t want to sleep, I want to explore! This city has people like me!”
“We understand, but if you go to sleep again, I’ll give you an upgrade,” the cat bargained, “your parts looked pretty old and I have some spare parts I’m willing to give you. You’ll be stronger and faster than you when I fix you up.” The robotic tiger was confused as the cat pulled out a crate and showed off some robotic parts.
“Suuurree, I’ll go to bed,” he obliged, screwing his head back, “but I better be smarter too when I wake up!” With his declaration, the bot shut down, crumbling into the couch as Mungo stared at DD.
“…Those parts are expensive nowadays, so sadly he won’t be smarter.” The cat started setting up a machine shaped as a tube, letting it open itself up while fiddling with its interfaces. “Mungo, Dwight, please carry Mango into the chamber while I set up the configurations.”
“So how long is this going to take,” the white tiger inquired, carrying the head over.
“Probably a day or two” Dwight answered, lugging the mechanical suit. “If my partner is setting that machine up, it means it’ll be a lot of work.”
“Yeah, it’ll probably take a night at least,” the cat added, closing the chamber on the robot, “Mango’s schematics look a bit too complicated for me to do in a short time. This machine should be able to automatically perform it in my stead with the parameters I set.” He turned off the holographic screens as he headed straight to the exit. “For now, I’m heading home, the buses to port should be coming soon and I’d rather not wait another hour if I miss it. Let’s go.”
“Wait, we’re just going to leave him here,” the tiger stressed, “I can’t leave Mango behind here, he’s like a part of me.”
“You won’t need to, you’re allowed to sleep in my base for night,” the cat offered, “you’ll be safe, people have crashed here before multiple times. But if any intruder comes, security will ring and an associate of mine will come to your aid. If you do go out, just go to the club above and order a Blue Shirley Temple with the Waning Moon Special and they’ll let you back in here. Is that alright with you Mungo?”
“I-I guess, that’s a lot to take in, but-“
“Trust Jasper, Mungo,” Dwight calmly interrupted, “he’s the best engineer I’ve met. You and Mango will be safe here, I guarantee it!” The cougar then swiftly presented the giant plushy before exclaiming, “you have Stripes to protect you too! The best fluffy guardian you’ll have in your life!” The tiger eased and chuckled as he watched Dwight’s adorable smile.
“Alright; alright. If anything happens, I’ll call you Dwight. See you two tomorrow!” With the tiger calmed, the other two felines take their leave, DD locking the doors. Navigating through the maze of alleyways, they reached a bus stop, waiting for it together before getting picked up and sitting at the end of the bus. A cougar in a blue tank top and a cat with a robotic helmet sitting very close to each other, their hands holding together in a crowded bus of civilians. They would soon come back to their apartment, located in one of the buildings at the port.
Entering, the two are greeted with the same familiar, comfy site. The lights of the room turned on, a radio tuning into the local station, and the air diffuser switched on automatically. A rune bot whirred to life flew around the space, watering the plants scattered about as the pet room headed back to its station from its day of cleaning. Dwight happily jumps into the familiar green couch, turning on the tv, while Jasper stripped off his armor and helmet, only wearing a stringer top and shorts before crawling into his lover’s arms.
“You’ve grown stronger,” Dwight cooed, caressing the cat’s muscular physique, “you must’ve been really busy being a Hero.” He carefully examined the scars that riddled his partner’s bodies before hugging him tightly.
“You don’t need to say that every time you visit,” Jasper calmly purred, growing louder as Dwight lightly massages the long recovered wounds. “Could you massage me later, my body’s been feeling a bit achey lately.”
The cougar lovingly smiled before asking, “you sure you don’t want it now?”
“…Maybe tomorrow. I want to cuddle you some more,” the feline professed. “I missed this feeling so much.”
“Me too Jasper, me too. Have you been eating well while I was gone?”
“With the money you kept sending me, of course, but I have a lot saved up so we can eat out together later this week. I found this really good conveyor belt sushi place we could go to, they let us play with a gachapon machine if we eat enough plates.” The cougar’s eyes sparkled and his ears perked up upon hearing the potential gamble.
“Oh? What sort of stuff can we win?”
“Some keychains, little figurines, and some sticker mods for Rune Bots. Last I visited, some of the stickers in stock were characters from an anime you watched. That one slice of life about a small school club where they search for cosmic stuff while the club prez doesn’t know most of their members are either aliens, espers, or time travelers.”
“Ah that one! It’d be neat to get one of them, always down to decorate our little guy with some more stickers. Any cool buffs they give?”
“Not really, just some cute cosmetic stuff. One of them is turning the night light into a projector to turn ceilings into a starry field. And before you ask, yes, our bot’s model can do that.”
“Wait, when did you replace our bot?”
“Two weeks ago, I transferred all the sticker mods over. I still have it in storage, so if you want it for your travels, I could transfer them back to it.
“I’d love that, it’ll help remind me of you when I use it.” The cougar hugged his cat tighter, enjoying the banter between them before letting out a sigh. “…I’m going to miss this a lot when I leave this weekend.”
“…Yeah, but that’s why we make the most of these visits,” the cat comforted, stroking the cougar’s arm. “One day though, we’ll live together, like the old days.”
“I can’t wait for that day to come,” the cougar chimed in with confliction in his eyes.
“Same here…” The cat leapt off of his partner’s arms, soon pulling him up. “Let’s stop thinking about that for now. Let’s head to bed, you’ve been dying to lay in it now.” The cougar got up immediately, scooped up the bed, and carried him to their room, with Jasper mewling adorably.
It was a spacious room with a window wall, one that displayed the seas, a sight that Dwight loved seeing. To avoid the city lights, the two pulled the curtains over, Jasper soon flicking a switch to lit up a calming blue floral pattern that was etched in it. The two climbed into a blue, king-sized bed, Jasper pushing aside the huggable pillow before wrapping himself back into the cougar’s arms.
“So comfy~”, the bigger feline purred, recalling something soon enough. “By the way, you forgot to check my HUD earlier.”
“Don’t ruin the moment, I’ll do it tomorrow,” the cat promised, hugging the cougar, “I’ll give it an upgrade too.”
“Thanks, I love you Jasper.”
“I love you too Dwight.”
“Goodnight.”
With a kiss, they both held each other close, falling asleep in each other’s embrace. One they both longed for every month.
