Heartsy Wolf was a brand new character quite a while ago and also my first and one of the main characters of my furry Fallout 4 AU! This features his backstory, other additional info as well as info about this AU itself as well! I'm very proud of myself for how I came up with this and for writing it all out!!

Much of the Commonwealth was destroyed due to nuclear annihilation as most living things wouldn't be able to survive such heavy amounts of radiation. However, there were also plenty of survivors, both among humans and animals. One such animal was Heartsy the Wolf. Before Heartsy became, well...Heartsy, he was just your standard, typical no name wolf who arrived at the wolf sanctuary a few hours ago and the workers at the sanctuary hadn't thought of a name for him yet. The wolf was roaming around his enclosure looking for a bite to eat when the bombs dropped. Heartsy miraculously survived the nuclear blasts and when he woke up, he found himself surrounded by dust, rubble, smoke clouds, and you name it. There was almost nothing left of the wolf sanctuary but thankfully, it seemed that none of the wolves were present. Did they get out as well? Too bad about the human workers, though...They didn't survive. Heartsy was hurt, but not badly. Once he got up, he noticed that he was able to stand on his hind legs like a human could, and found himself holding his head with one of his front paws, also just like a human. "Ugh...What the hell happened to m- Wait, what? I...Can talk...?" The wolf was super confused. What had happened besides obvious nuclear warfare? He went from being a wild wolf to a wolf that's almost humanlike with the way he can now walk and talk as one, but something else had also changed...As Heartsy looked down at himself, trying to see what else had changed about him, he noticed that his colors had changed as well! He went from gray and white to...Mostly purple and pink?! The poor wolf could barely make sense of it all and now he has no choice but to figure out a way on how to start living this new chapter of his life, which will be taking place in a complete and total wasteland. Heartsy had noticed that his fur had hearts on it as well, which he wasn't very satisfied with as he doesn't consider himself a warm and friendly wolf. He is reserved and not a fan of the majority of humans and animals, other wolves included. Instead, this wolf prefers to be alone and when he was still a wild wolf, the same thing applied. However, perhaps these hearts on his fur could easily deceive others into thinking he is a friendly one which he could definitely use to his advantage! Just scare away any unsuspecting victims once they get close enough with a loud, scary snarl! So perhaps those hearts weren't such a bad thing after all. He had decided on the name Heartsy for himself to add to the deceit as he isn't very friendly at all! For the most part, anyway...

During the few days that Heartsy was out exploring the wastelands, he found out that there were other creatures just like him that looked like other wolves, felines, and canines that were also walking on their hind legs and using humanlike body language and speech to communicate with one another. He also discovered mutant crustaceans and scorpions, amongst other creatures which didn't behave humanlike at all. Whether or not any of these were friendly, Heartsy didn't know and he didn't want to find out as he's the reserved type and hadn't quite gotten fully used to his new body and looks yet so he didn't want to end up in any possible confrontations. He also found a couple of humans that were very much alive, but were heavily damaged or injured but not in any fatal ways. He didn't understand this at all but they were apparently called ghouls? Sadly for Heartsy, staying hidden for as long as you can and avoiding basically everyone around you ended up not playing out very well for our wolf as he suddenly found himself knocked out and kidnapped when he had entered an abandoned restaurant looking for something to eat. It seems like a couple of Synths from The Institute were roaming this restaurant. One could definitely say "wrong place, wrong time" here as that is indeed what it was for the poor purple wolf.

Simply put, the Institute is a scientific society based in the Commonwealth and basically the majority, if not all in the Commonwealth that aren't a part of the Institute themselves, hate their guts due to how hostile and secretive this society is. One of their specialties is creating synthetic humans, also known as Synths. The Institute certainly loves their robotics and now that they've discovered that several animals, including humans, have not only survived the blasts but have also mutated due to the radiation. Being the geniuses that they think they are, they of course had to experiment with these mutated subjects and unfortunately for Heartsy, he was going to be one of those test subjects. The Institute wanted to see if they could add robotic parts to these mutants and if successful, try to turn them into hybrid robotic brainwashed workers for the Institute.

Heartsy was experimented on and given robotic parts, basically turning him into a robot and wolf hybrid. The scientists had figured that since the kidnapped subjects were able to survive something deemed basically impossible like that out in the open, they would most likely survive these experiments as well. After Heartsy's transformation was completed, he was put into a room by himself to heal and rest up. However, little did the Institute know that project Heartsy wasn't gonna go according to plan. Sure, the purple wolf may be reserved and prefers to avoid social contact but what he hadn't yet discovered was his strength, and him now being half a robot, he was about to discover that his strength was even stronger than it was ever before. Because of Heartsy being a robot as well now, it meant that he could take a lot more damage than any normal wolf could and taking him down would be proven difficult due to his new robotic skeleton hidden under his fur. After taking down several Synths and Institute workers, Heartsy managed to escape using his newly found strength and abilities. When he was being experimented on, they had performed surgery on the poor wolf to install robotic parts into him and give him a full metal skeleton with a skin colored plastic covering over the metal and they managed to fully find a way to sew him back up and make his pink and purple fur serve as a disguise so others might get easily fooled at thinking he was just one of those mutant, talking animals. He also received something that kind of looked like a metal chest piece, but in the shape of tools. This was to indicate to other fellow Synths and animal-robot hybrids that he is able perform repairs on them since they had programmed him to be very good at robot repairs. The chest piece also serves as additional armored protection for his chest area. The Institute's goal with Heartsy and the other captured mutant animals was to make robotic animal soldiers out of them who'd be working for the Institute and infiltrating areas and communities of the Commonwealth to abduct and replace residents for espionage purposes, much like their Synths. They made a complete dedicated project out of Heartsy as he would be the first animal to be the test subject for "animal and robot hybrid" experimentation. They would inject him with fluids that would make his fur grow back in case of hair loss and function as normal despite being half a robot now, and the fluids would also make sure that Heartsy's existing original organs and body parts such as his teeth and tongue would function properly with his robotic parts and skeleton. The purple wolf was the only one to have successfully escaped from the Institute as the brainwashing attempt had failed. He had broken out of his room and due to the combat with the Institute and overall running, hiding, and additional combat in the Commonwealth after escaping, Heartsy did suffer some damage on his head and facial area. It seemed like those fluids that got injected into Heartsy did help regrow any damaged fur from combat but it looks like that may not always be the case since the damaged fur on his nose wasn't able to regrow for some reason so he used a light blue adhesive bandage to cover up his snoot scar eventually. He's also got himself a cool looking eye scar on the left that looks just like a lightning bolt!

With having escaped from the Institute, Heartsy feels as strong as ever and is afraid of almost nothing. He fears no humans and creatures but there are some robots such as the Sentry bot that can definitely make him a bit scared. He can also be quite scared of Super Mutants. Most of the time though, he won't hesitate to fight anything or anyone who tries to mess with him as fighting against the Synths and hostile humans present at the Institute has given him a massive confidence boost after finding out how much damage he could take after becoming a robot and animal hybrid. He discovered that he is able to shoot a laser out of his robotic left eye after a Synth had damaged his original pink left eye which then exposed the robotic eye. He can also shoot electricity bolts out of his metallic hand paw pads or zap things repeatedly with them while standing close to someone or something.

So what is Heartsy's personality like? Well, as stated before, he's quite reserved and isn't very social. He dislikes humans and most other animals and tends to avoid them whenever he can. However, he can warm up to someone eventually if they prove time and time again that they're a decent being but his dislikes for humans only grew stronger after what the Institute did to him. While roaming around and exploring more of the Commonwealth as some time passed by after his escape, he became very interested in General Atomics International and their line of Mister Handy robots. The more he spent time around them, the fonder he grew of them and developed a love for these robots. Heartsy enjoyed talking to them and it seemed they liked him as well, which led him to eventually develop a passion for the Mister Handy line as well as the female equivalent, the Miss Nanny. His love for these kind of robots eventually led him to Graygarden, where Heartsy made his home as he was more than welcome to stay due to being a non-hostile and offering to help out with any repairs that the robots there may need, as he was quite good at this from his quickly developed passion for them and because of his repair programming. Besides repairs, he is also willing to protect Graygarden from any hostiles looking to attack. The robots at Graygarden get along very well with Heartsy and he's thankful they've given him a home here. Occasionally, Heartsy will visit the General Atomics Galleria and the General Atomics factory to check out how the robots are doing there. Due to the purple wolf being so friendly and lovable towards the Mister Handy robots, he was able to peacefully communicate with most hostile ones and prevent them from attacking him, even if Heartsy was trespassing somewhere, such as the factory. While he is also quite interested in the Mister Gutsy line, he has had almost no luck in having friendly conversations with the combat equivalent of the Mister Handy. If a Gutsy spots Hearsty while he's roaming around the Commonwealth, it will attack him regardless of if he tries to let the robot know he's friendly. The only Gutsies that don't attack Heartsy are the ones at the General Atomics Galleria who patrol the Galleria. Then again, they're basically a broken record and can't really be conversed with. The Director at the Galleria is also a Mister Gutsy. Heartsy was able to convince it to initiate the grand reopening after showing a General Atomics ID card the wolf found at the factory. Most robots at the Galleria refer to Heartsy as "Mr. Kincaid", due to that being the name on the presented ID card that he showed the Director and some of the other robots there just in case they had any suspicions about him being there before the grand reopening so every time Heartsy visits the Galleria for fun, he's often called Mr. Kincaid and he happily plays along with this for the fear of them attacking him if he told them who he really was since he kinda had a feeling that his passion for Mister Handies wasn't really gonna work here with the specific programming of the robots present at the Galleria.

As time went on, people in the Commonwealth started calling these mutant animals that could walk and talk like humans "Furries". There are many furries roaming around the Commonwealth and because they are basically the same as humans but with an animal body, furries can also be found being members of different factions such as the Raiders, Gunners, or the Brotherhood of Steel. Just like humans, furries can also either be hostile or friendly towards the Sole Survivor aka the player character, depending on the situation. Not all animals became furries after being exposed to radiation. Some simply just didn't make it or instead of becoming a furry, they'd turn into a completely feral animal that had quite the visible damage from the nuclear blasts but had survived nonetheless. Ferals can't be reasoned with and will aimlessly attack anything that comes into their sight, much like a feral ghoul would.

Heartsy Wolf is a furry and a possible companion for the player character. To find Heartsy, the player must travel to Graygarden where they will find the purple wolf. If the player were to approach close to Heartsy, he will begin dialogue with the player. However, if the player decides to attack Heartsy or any of the Mister Handies at Graygarden while he's not a companion and allied up with the player, the wolf and all the robots there will become hostile and attack the player. The only way to stop them from attacking the player is to kill all of them or disarm yourself by putting away your weapon to show that you made a mistake due to a misunderstanding. This will make Heartsy think you had mistaken him and his robots for hostile enemies and will allow you another chance to engage in conversation with Heartsy. His first conversation with the player will be quite unfriendly and reserved but he will be open to joining the player's team and become a companion. However, if everyone at Graygarden is killed, this area will become unavailable as a settlement for the player, Minutemen and anyone else who is non-hostile looking for a safe place to stay and it may get taken over by Raiders or Gunners.

If the player already has a companion, furries can become a secondary companion, kinda like the companion system in Fallout: New Vegas. Furries who've joined forces with you can also provide help around settlements much like any other regular companion. Every one of your companions/allies has an opinion about one another and this can best be seen when swapping around companions. Everyone will have an opinion about Heartsy and any other furry companions the player may have as well as vice versa! Heartsy won't really like most of your companions and will be reserved around them but there are exceptions such as Codsworth, Dogmeat, and Nick Valentine. The wolf will especially quickly become friends with Codsworth if introduced to one another, due to him being a Mister Handy. Heartsy will also eventually develop a soft spot for Nick and become friends with him as well. Just like with all regular companions, Heartsy will eventually warm up to the player and may even earn his admiration as well if the player's actions match with Heartsy's likes. Performing actions that he dislikes will earn his disappointment instead and he may leave the team if enough disappointment is earned. Luckily for the player, Heartsy is pretty much neutral towards most actions such as stealing or lockpicking. The things he will hate the most is choosing to fight or kill non-hostile Mister Handies as well as innocent people roaming around the Commonwealth. He may be reserved and have a dislike for people but that doesn't mean he'll tolerate harming innocent bystanders if they didn't attack the player first. Some dialogue Heartsy may say when choosing to attack a non-hostile Mister Handy or person is "What the hell was that for?" or "I may not like people, but that was completely uncalled for." When a companion, the wolf is quite good for both long and short distance combat since he can use all sorts of weaponry just like the player as well as his own unique robot abilities for close combat such as electrocuting enemies with his hand paw pads. If both Codsworth and Heartsy are companions at the same time and Codsworth goes down in combat, Heartsy will automatically rush to him to try to give him any needed repairs if not occupied by anyone attacking him. This will lower Codsworth's downtime and make him able to get up a lot quicker! If there are any hostile Mister Handies nearby and Heartsy is a current companion, the player can attempt to try and peacefully get the robots to not attack them but this will not always work depending on the situation and the Mister Handy. For example, if a Handy's combat inhibitor is damaged beyond repair, the attempt will be useless. Attempting to show that you're friendly and mean no harm via Heartsy will not work under any circumstances with rogue or hostile Mister Gutsies. It will also not work with Protectrons, Sentry bots, or Assaultrons as Heartsy has no expertise with these kind of robots. However, he may be able to perform repairs on them in certain cases. He would also like to become more knowledgeable and passionate about Assaultrons but he hasn't had much luck in meeting a friendly one, or just one that responds positively to him overall. One type of robot that Heartsy absolutely despises and sheds no tears over are Synths due to his history with the Institute. Heartsy will like it if you destroy a Synth and respond positively. However, all Synths will automatically attack Heartsy upon sight since they're all aware about him escaping from the Institute and see him as a betrayer due to the Synths receiving a software update providing this information to them.

People in the Commonwealth have an overall neutral opinion on furries. Some are totally okay with them and some don't really like them but most don't really care as they are mostly viewed as just another human but as an animal due to how scarily similar they behave as humans. As for Diamond City, only domestic cat and domestic dog furries are more than welcome there as the people already consider themselves quite vulnerable and aren't sure if any wild type of animals can be trusted such as wolves and bears. Heartsy was never able to enter Diamond City alone especially since the people there were highly suspicious of him being part robot. They hate Synths and the Institute here but if he's a current companion of the player character and they both travel there together, the wolf will be allowed to enter as he will be under constant supervision by the player character. However, due to him becoming friends with Nick Valentine eventually if both are existing allies or companions of the player, Nick will put in a good word about Heartsy and he'll be able to freely enter and roam around Diamond City.

Overall, Heartsy Wolf is a reserved and mostly unfriendly wolf when you first meet him but there's a possibility of him warming up to you if you're a good being. But if you're not a good being, the chances of you becoming friends with Heartsy is slim to none! Except if you're a Mister Handy or Miss Nanny! Then Heartsy will instantly soften up and show his much more friendly side and adores having conversations with ya! He's also a great companion to have in combat and if you're dealing with a Mister Handy. Perhaps all those hearts isn't a complete and total lie after all!

Small fun fact:

If Strong the Super Mutant is allied with or a companion of the player character, then Strong and Heartsy Wolf can't stand each other as Strong dislikes furries and robots. He often refers to Heartsy as "stupid furman"!
