The Pregnancy
Chris stood dumbfounded as what Jordan had just told him, over the phone, took hold. His best friend had called him ranting and raving that Chris’ little brother Kyle had gotten Jordan’s sister pregnant. Chris was not even sure his brother knew how to have sex, let alone with a girl, to get one pregnant.
“Yeah, ha, ha, very funny.” Chris replied.
“You think I’m joking?!” Jordan asked incredulously.
“I know you are.” Chris Countered.
“Look man, my sister is all upset because she missed her period. She was ill in the morning and after taking a pregnancy test she came back positive.” Jordan angrily yelled at Chris.
“Bro funs fun, but there’s also taking things too far.” Chris responded with his voice carrying a bit of an edge.
“You are unbelievable! This may be a reality check, but Kyle knows how to knock someone up because he did so himself. If you don’t believe me then come look at the pregnancy test.”
“Weren’t you the one always defending him for being gay? Do you now believe me that he never was?” Chris asked.
“I’ll agree with you there. He can’t be gay if he knocked up my sister.”
“What makes you think it was Kyle that got her preggers?” Chris asked incredulously.
“He’s the only one that’s been dating her.” Chris turned as Kyle entered the house. He froze as he saw Chris glare at him and he wondered why he was so upset.
“Hold on a sec,” Chris told Jordan. “You got something to say for yourself?” Chris asked his brother.
“What?!” Kyle asked, confused, having no idea what was going on.
“Jordan’s calling. Apparently you got his sister pregnant.” Chris said bitterly.
“WHAT?!” Kyle screamed out in shock and horror. Chris eyed him closely.
“There’s been a mistake.” Kyle stammered.
“Oh really,” Both Chris and Jordan said at the same time.
“We haven’t even gone out once. It must be her boyfriend that did it.” Kyle said nervously.
“What does he mean? They haven’t gone out once. They’ve gone on numerous dates.” Jordan yelled and both Chris and Kyle heard him over the phone. Chris stared at Kyle, making his brother want to crawl into a hole and hide.
“She’s been paying me to be a cover for her. She sneaks off with her actual boyfriend…”
“But I think she’s seeing a nice guy like you.” Jordan interupted bitterly. Chris continued to glare at his younger brother silently.
“And all those other guys you’ve been going out with. You running cover for them too?!”
“It was just a side job to build up my cred…” Kyle tried to explain.
“Yeah, well your cred is about to get your ass kicked.” Jordan shouted. Chris returned the phone to his ear.
“Listen, you don’t talk to my brother like that! He’s my little brother and I’ll deal with him.” Chris shouted back. Chris then glared at Kyle and the look told Kyle to go to his room. Kyle was closing his door when he heard the shouting match between Chris and his best friend.
Charlie walked down the street dressed in his preppy clothing. He was acting like a zombie seeing if he could attract Mike’s attention. After around fifteen minutes Mike and a couple of his cronies saw Charlie and decided to approach him.
“Look what the cat threw up,” Mike jeered as he and his cronies laughed while they approached him. Charlie had to force himself to not smirk as they were playing into his hands.
“Wow, I’ve known people that would pay top dollar to get as stoned as he is.” A light haired boy said and Charlie did not recognize him from school. He was the smallest out of the three of them. This made Charlie wonder if he was someone's younger brother or a kid trying to fit in with bigger kids.
“If the drugs cures all the homos like him then I’m all for it. This way normal people can be rid of this nonsense.” Mike said and Charlie just stared blankly at them as he waited for Mike to step closer to him. He was waiting for Mike to push him again before he started acting like his old self and he would get revenge for what had done to him.
He remembered the beasting Mike had given him while the drugs his mother put him on had left him helpless. Now that his father had gotten him off of them, he was ready to right the wrongs done to him.
“So they turn him into that? That is the cure! To drug him until there is nothing in there anymore?” The boy asked and he stepped close to examine Charlie. He waved his hand in front of his face to see if there was any reaction. Charlie continued to act like a zombie but he tensed slightly because his plan had been to beat up Mike and any of the others that tried to step in.
This kid could ruin his plans and realize Charlie’s secret too early if he started in before Mike did. Luckily the boy seemed more curious than threatening. However, Charlie had to be ready either way. A punk like him was too unpredictable in this situation.
“Who cares one less faggot to worry about.” Mike said as he reached out to shove Charlie. Charlie immediately grabbed his arm and twisted it then pulled so that Mike fell on the ground.
“This faggot isn’t playing around anymore.” Charlie said and they stared at him in surprise.
“What the faggot?” Mike shouted.
“That’s right baby, I’m back! and you boys are gonna pay your tabs that you owe.” Charlie watched as the other two ran off and Mike struggled to get his arm out of Charlie’s grip.
“Now that we’re alone I think it’s time we had a talk about how you treat others.” Charlie said as he leaned in then he began to tear at the preppy clothing he wore. For the first time Mike noticed they had been doctored to be tear away. Charlie now stood in front of Mike still holding his arm dressed in one of his most flamboyant outfits. Mikle screamed as Charlie laughed.
Jordan’s sister sat on the sofa crying as her brother paced. He was angrily talking to himself as he went over the argument he and Chris had over the phone. Off in the kitchen their parents were busy arguing about the pregnancy.
“I can’t believe he talked to me like that.” Jordan said to himself.
“What other option is there?” Their father said to their mother. She mumbled to him to keep his voice down but they knew it would not last long. Their father had a temper that kept building the angrier he got and it had just been kindled.
“You fucked up big time.” Jordan told her. She paused from her crying just long enough to hear him before she started up again. Their parents entered the living room still arguing about the pregnancy to each other. They had reached a point that they were ready to involve the kids.
“She’s only fifteen, that’s too young to have a baby. How is she gonna take care of it? Child support, from a fourteen year old?! What kind of job can he get? Mcdonalds. we’d get fifty dollars a week, if that. That isn’t enough to cover the diapers.
We can’t afford another kid and can we expect from the other kid’s parents? Nothing! Look how they raised their son and we should expect them to help raise his kid.” Their father shouted, his voice getting louder.
“And, look how she was raised!” Jordan shouted. Both his parents turned glare at him. “You can’t put all the blame on him, it’s not like he was about to make a baby all by himself.”
“Stop it! Stop it! Stop it!!” She screamed suddenly and they all turned to look at her. “That kid, what’s his name? Kyle? He’s not the father. I’ve been seeing someone else while I’ve been pretending I was with him.” She explained and she heard her mother making a ‘Tsk’ sound as her father shook his head.
“Another guy? Do you even know who the father is?” Their father asked, causing her to become very indignant.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” She yelled.
“It means how big a whore have you been? How many guys are you sleeping with?” Jordan asked as he was becoming disgruntled.
“Jordan!” Their mother shouted at him.
“What?! Let’s be honest here. I mean how long has she been modeling her life off of the Jerry Springer Show?”
“This is unbelievable,” Their father remarked.
“Jason is the only man that I’ve been seeing. You guys keep trying to break us up so we used Kyle to hide our love.” She explained.
“Cute but how many other girls are his babies mommas?” Their father asked sternly. She waited to see if her mother would back her up and take her side. When her mother remained silent and watched her as sternly as the others were.
“This is unbelievable! I don’t know why you are trying to break us up!”
“What we’ve been doing is trying to protect you so that something like this doesn't happen.” Their mother replied.
“Well it did happen and guess who has to pay for it.” Their father said.
“Jason and I love each other.” She said and Jordan snorted and she glared at him.
“Which means nothing when you’re pregnant.” Jordan replied.
“He’ll take care of me like he always does.” She insisted.
“Oh we know how he takes care of you. Let’s just see if he sticks around once he learns he’s a daddy.” Jordan mocked.
“So now what?” Their father asked.
“I’ll make an appointment to discuss our options. The abortion pill should be easier than an actual abortion, one would think. Having never taken it, I don’t know.” Their mother said.
“No! This is our love child!” She protested.
“You can’t be serious,” Jordan replied. She saw her parents looking nervously away from her as if they were agreeing with her brother.
“How do you plan to take care of it? You can’t be thinking of raising a child at your age! If your father and I could afford another child we would have had one long ago. Having a child is not like owning a doll!
It’s very expensive having to buy diapers and formula. It has to be watched all the time because they are delicate and can hurt themselves easily unless there is someone to make sure it doesn’t need help. Your father and I can bearly pay the bills with both of us working two full time jobs. We can’t give up a job to watch your child while you’re at school.
Right now it’s too young for child care but do you even have a clue how expensive that is? It’s not free! The average cost is over $300 dollars a week. That is like a full paycheck for an average adult. The best you can do is get a part time job at a fast food restaurant and you’ll be lucky if you can get paid a couple hundred a week.
Your father and I have always been Pro Life because the church always said so. Now that we’re the ones in this situation there is a lot to think about. Number one being the welfare of the child. I can see that it is not just some punishment because my daughter got pregnant. Any and all consequences will be inflicted on that child. And that’s not fair!!!!
If a child is brought into this world and the parents can’t take care of it, who suffers? The baby does. It’s the baby that starves or sits in piles of its own filth because the parents can’t buy diapers. That’s not even considering people that don’t have what we have. My god, how could we ever have been so blind?!
Snarky comments like if you can’t take care of a baby then you should not have one, prove that’s why we have abortions. To prevent a child from suffering because it cannot be cared for properly.” Their mother explained.
“Jason and I will find a way!!!” She cried out.
“Good luck with that,” Jordan remarked.
“I told you; you should have had the talk with him.” Amanda Oliver said. She and her husband Brad were changing for bed. She had been shouting all night even after it was revealed that Kyle was not the father but the whole thing was a misunderstanding.
“I HAD the talk with him and even gave him the condoms. Plus, why are you still harping about this? Kyle did not get that girl pregnant! AND I punished him for trying to be a pimp.” Brad said as he chuckled. Amanda went over and slapped his arm.
“It’s not funny.” She said as he changed his expression to one of trying to pretend to be serious.
“You still haven’t answered my question.” Brad said. She looked at him and he repeated the question. She became more annoyed at the lackadaisical attitude he was having about all of this. Did he not realize what she did?
“The reason I’m still on this is because we dodged a bullet here. Things could have gone a lot worse. You men are laughing and joking about this, but what if it actually happened? What if he got that girl pregnant?” Amand asked. She heard him sigh and this made her more annoyed if that was even possible. His face remained placid as his demeanor remained as calm as ever.
“And what if the sky fell tomorrow? What if she keeps that child? What if she gets an abortion? What if, what if? Worrying about what ifs isn’t gonna make anything better.” Brad said.
“What it shows us is that we need to be better prepared!” She screamed.
“But it doesn’t. It’s only gonna fill you with worry. I’ve spoken to both of our boys and at some point we have to trust them to make the right decisions.”
“I know but…” Amanda said.
“But nothing, If you are so concerned then rather than worrying, think of something more creative. What more could be done that we already haven’t done?” Brad asked as he climbed into bed. Amanda stood thinking about it before she joined him.
John sat watching cartoons on the television as his grandparents watched him.
“Do you wanna go outside and play?” His grandmother asked but he remained silent then shook his head. This worried her because usually no matter how cold it is, he would be outside playing soldier with The Coach.
Lately, he had been withdrawn and spending a lot of time watching television. That was something that he rarely had done in the past. It was like he wanted to hide in a make-believe world rather than the real one.
Since the kidnapping they had gotten him a therapist to help him deal with what had been done to him. He used to enjoy visiting a family friend because they had puppies but when he saw the dog kennel began to cry uncontrollably and they had to take him out of there. He was also having a lot of nightmares.
His therapist had encouraged his parents to get him back into his regular routine so that he can get back to his normal behavior. The kidnapping had affected him more than they had originally realized. He wanted to block out everything which was why he was trying to live in a make believe world.
“Come on soldier, you are gonna get out of shape.” The Coach said.
“I’ll make your favorites! Two ice cream sundays.” His Grandmother added. Her voice filled with pride.
“NO!!!!” John Shouted and they stared at him with concern. He turned back towards the television as his grandparents gave each other knowing looks.
“Is there something else you want?” She asked nervously.
“No, I just want to watch TV.” John replied. There was an uncomfortable silence as they watched him watching the television. They wished there was a way to help him but they had no idea how.
In the school locker room the previous gym class was leaving as the next one entered and the students were changing for class. Charlie leaned against a locker while Kyle was changing as he was delaying going to his next class.
“So thanks to my dad I’m back to my old self.” Charlie said.
“It’s good to have you back.” Kyle said softly.
“Hey wanna hang out at the club this weekend?” Charlie asked.
“No, I'm grounded.” Kyle replied glumly.
“Why? Because of the whole ‘I almost got a girl pregnant’ thing?” Charlie asked and Kyle tried to shush him.
“That’s part of it, but it’s mostly because I was allowing the girls to use me to fool their parents.” Kyle explained.
“You need to just come out and get over it already.” Charlie remarked.
“Yeah, easy for you to say.” Kyle said. Tyler walked into the locker room and looked around. He saw Charlie and Kyle and he walked over to join them. He opened a locker next to them and put his stuff inside.
“Hey guys, what’s going on?” Tyler asked awkwardly and Charlie rolled his eyes while Kyle seemed to ignore him.
“I gotta go.” Charlie said and he patted Kyle on his shoulder then walked away.
“I hear you’re a daddy.” Tyler said as he tried to act as if they were still friends. Kyle finished changing and he slammed his locker closed as he walked away still ignoring Tyler. This made Tyler sigh and he lightly bumped his forehead against the locker.
“Man,” He said softly.
Jordan’s sister sat outside of the mall as she waited for Jason to pick her up. She wished he would arrive and pick her up on his dirt bike so they could go to his place where it was warmer. She was shivering even though she was bundled in because of the cold.
“Let’s go!” He shouted at her as his dirt bike skidded to a halt as he slammed on the breaks. She ran up and kissed him but he turned his face so that she kissed his cheek and not his mouth like she intended. He wanted to hurry because his brother was allowing him to use his place for a few hours.
“I have news.” She said softly but he frowned in annoyance.
“Tell me later, come on it’s fuckin’ cold.” He replied.
“Stop, this is important.” She said and he rolled his eyes in annoyance.
“What?” He asked sharply.
“Guess what? You’re gonna be a daddy.” She replied coyly.
“What?!” He asked in disbelief.
“I’m pregnant.” She said as her soft voice took on a musical tone.
“What the fuck?! You said you were on the pill!”
“Well… it turns out you can’t buy it over the counter and my mom said she won’t buy it until I’m fifteen. I figured that you can’t get pregnant until then.” She explained.
“Bitch, are you stupid? Haven’t you ever seen “Thirteen and Pregnant” on MTV? He shouted at her and a pained look crossed her face.
“What are you saying?” She asked as she tried to keep the hurt out of her voice.
“You gotta get an abortion.” He said flatly.
“But this is our child.” She protested. Jason spun his dirt bike around so that it was now facing the opposite direction. This surprised her because he had never behaved like this before. He always seemed so sweet and kind.
“Listen, it’s been fun but the only reason I was with you cuz you was a cheap screw.” Jason said laughing. Jordan’s sister’s face blushed as her anger suddenly turned on.
“But I thought you loved me?” She asked incredulously.
“I’d make you believe anything to get into your pants.”
“So you’re telling me that all this time that I’ve been pretending your little dick was something because I thought you loved me when you didn’t.” She said with a slight smile on her face. He was after all a typical white boy and they were very touchy about that kind of thing.
“You never minded before.” Jason said in annoyance.
“Just like you pretended to get into my pants, I pretended because I was afraid you’d leave if I laughed at your tiny cocktail weenie. A real man would have a full size hotdog. I was hoping you’d grow a little once you hit puberty, but here we are and you still have a baby’s dick. Well in your case a baby would be a lot bigger than that little thing.” She mocked and Jason’s face was bright red with anger.
“Fuck you cunt!!!” He yells she he speeds off with dust flying everywhere. She put her face in her hands and began to cry as she wondered what was going to happen now. Who was going to take care of her and her baby?
Inside the Oliver house the phone rang and Kyle left his room to answer it.
“Hello?” He asked meekly.
“Hey kiddo,” He recognized the voice of his grandmother and this brought a large grin to his face. His grandmother was the one member of the family that actually paid attention to him. Even though Chris and the others seemed to, it was not like the time he spent with her.
“Hi grandma.” He replied softly.
“Is that all I get? What did I do to suddenly get you to hate me?” She replied sarcastically.
“No!” He cried out hurt that she would say that.
“When are you coming to see me?” She asked.
“I’m grounded.”
“What did you do this time?” She asked.
“Well…” Kyle said as he began to explain the whole story to her.
