Chapter One

Once upon a time there was a big and powerful dragon and this dragon had a loyal kobold soldier. The kobold soldier wanted to prove herself to her dragon and was sent on an important mission. The mission, though clearly important, was merely the delivery of a message to a neighboring dragon.

The loyal kobold was only a courier, while her kin were bravely fighting a war in their dragon's name. This made her feel as though she was unworthy for battle, that her dragon did not trust in her capabilities. Still, she followed through on her task to deliver the message. Once she arrived, there was a message to be sent back. Back and forth, back and forth, she went again and again as the war raged on.

With no end in sight, she became weary of her droning task. She longed for the glory of battle, to prove herself to her dragon. Though loyal as she was, her mind began to wander, and she began to question just what exactly these messages were. On another trip to the neighboring dragon, the scroll containing her dragon's latest message had slipped from her pack. As she reached out to gather it, it became unfurled. At first she quickly began to roll it back up, but whether it was the boredom brought on by her seemingly meaningless task, or the curiosity welling up in her idle mind, she slowly began to peel it back down.

The words she read carefully, words forbidden to be seen by her and her kin, for a dragon's eyes only. A moment passes as her eyes draw down across the parchment, before it is suddenly and unceremoniously dropped to the ground. A loud thunder roars through the skies as the dark clouds above open up to pour down upon her. She turns back down the path to her dragon's kingdom, abandoning the scroll as it sinks into the mud.

Chapter Two

Once upon a time there was small but fierce kobold and she proudly served a big and powerful dragon. This big and powerful dragon had all he could ever ask for and then more. There was no challenge in his life, nothing to bring him more than the most simple joy, just days passing into days... But one day he decided that he truly desired even more than everything he could ask for.

He sent his strongest warrior, a small but fierce kobold, proud to serve, to deliver a message to a fellow dragon. She knew not what the message was, for she was forbidden from reading it. The kobold excitedly became a courier in the hopes of one day proving herself to her dragon. In the following days, a grand war broke out between her dragon and the neighboring dragon. Though the two did not meet directly in combat, their kobold armies met time and time again as their draconic masters watched from above.

The kobold continued her important mission until she could no longer. As she read the message, she could not contain her disappointment, and then her anger. All this time, all she ever wanted was to prove herself in combat, to fight for her dragon, to serve alongside her kin for something that truly mattered. Her eyes followed every sentence with regret that she had been fooled for so long.

Chapter Three

The dragon had sent her friends and family to war, in the name of honor and glory, but there was no honor or glory to be had, for the kobold had learned the truth. The dragon had sent his army to be slaughtered for his own entertainment. Merely a blood sport to be viewed only by himself and his fellow dragon.

As she finished reading the message she was tasked to deliver, she decided she had to return to her dragon's kingdom. She may be his strongest warrior, but she was still just a small kobold. How could she stand up to the might of a dragon? One with so much power and sway over her own kin? How could she alone put an end to this pointless bloodshed? Simply put, she could not do it alone. Not even an army of kobold could stand against a dragon.

No, so on the path back home, she steps into the shadow of a tree to block out the rain. She reaches into her pack for a blank parchment and begins to write a new message. One to deliver to her master's fellow dragon. If her dragon wants challenge and entertainment, then as his loyal kobold, she will gladly deliver. She may not be able to prove herself in combat, but he will...

Once upon a time there was a big and powerful dragon. That time has passed, but the kobold, loyal to her kin, has remained.
