I paced my cage, occasionally glancing at my captor to see if he was still watching. The guard barely looked like he could hold the sword on his waist, let alone take me on, but that blasted whistle on his side. One blow from that and this whole room would be swarmed once again.

“You know I got to hand it to ya, little guy. Captain said you put 2 of our guys in the infirmary. Guess even they could handle a kobold," the man praised me but always kept his hand on his sword. “It sucks that you're here and all, but I'ma gonna be frank with ya. Your luck has run out. Once the captain gets back, you're finished. So please be good and stay. I really don't feel like fighting you."

What kind of warrior is this? His sheer goal to admit that he doesn't wish to do his job is baffling. Banging my head on the cage, I heard the faintest creak. Looking over, I saw the cage's door slightly agard. I used my tail to poke it, and… ya, it's open. He forgot to lock the cage. I stared blankly at the door and then back at the guard, who was clueless about his mistake. Quickly but slowly, I used my tail to close the cage.

An eternity passed as I watched him. The man hummed a tune till someone came knocking on the door. A few words were exchanged when he approached me a few feet away from the cage.

“Hey, I'll be right back, so stay put for me, okay?" Chuckling to himself as he exited the room.

Once I was sure he was gone, I opened the cage door and slowly made my way to the exit. Cracking it open, I looked around, but no one was there. These people are a joke. I slowly exited, looking both ways once more before quietly closing the door. I moved through the halls quietly like a mouse.

As I made my way down the hall, I heard a group of guards making their way down the hall. I dived under the table, covering my maw, praying to the gods that they wouldn't notice me. Even after they passed, I waited until I no longer heard them before making my way down. When I finally made it to the exit, all my hope drained as I saw two men guarding it.

As I watched them from the safety of the corner, I was alerted to the sound of a loud crash. Looking behind me, I saw my captor looking right at me. A myriad of emotions flooded his face before settling on horror.

“You're not supposed to be here," and before I reacted, he had blown his whistle. “THE KOBOLD HAS ESCAPE! HE'S RIGHT BY THE SOUTH EXIT!"

The hall was soon flooded by the sound of guards shouting and rushing towards my location. My captor took a swing at me, but I quickly parried it with my claws, pushing him back. Before he regained his balance, I rushed him down. He readied himself for my charge that, sadly, would never happen as I just ran right past him. I could hear his comrades yelling at him as I got further down. Turning the corner, I could see a sea of guards coming down the hall.

Looking around, I entered a nearby room and began barricading myself in it. The sounds of the guards pounding on the door started to worry me. I can't let it end like this. I want to live. Panicking, I inched my way closer to the window. Looking out, I could see it was pretty far below the raving.

“Look, if you come out right now, I promise you won't meet a terrible end." My captor yelled through the door. But I have come this far and refuse to get caught now.

Taking a breath, I used my claws to scale down the side of the kept. As I slowly made my way closer to the ravine, I could hear the sound of the door busting open, and the room began to get flooded with guards.

Looking below, I figured it was now or never, so I gave them a great, big, toothy smile before letting go. I loved the feeling of the warm breeze of freedom. Sadly, it was interrupted by the sharp, freezing embrace of the ravine as it carried me to freedom.
