Merrik’s Tale
By
Furry Sith Lord
Once upon a time there was born a wolf cub. Not the typical average wolf cub but one that enjoyed acting like a puppy. His name was Leggo. Around the same time, more or less, another cub was born that would see himself as a rival of Leggo. His name was Merrik and his life was not as pleasant as Leggo’s was.
“Merrik, you are worthless and you are stupid!!!” His mother screamed at him. She was reclining on her hospital bed and removed her oxygen mask to yell at him. He flinched from the remark as if she had swiped at his face.
His mother had been dying from liver problems and needed a transplant. Unfortunately they had been unable to find one. Her lungs and other organs had been filling with fluid and she was sent to the hospital. She was not allowed to drink anything and she was incredibly thirsty. When his father had been called away to talk to her vet, she had handed him the cut and asked him to fill it with water from the sink.
He knew in his heart that he couldn’t say no so as he walked toward the sink to fill it up his beans had made a squeaking noise on the tile floor that made him stop and look down. When he looked up a second later, he saw that a nurse had looked in to see what the noise was. She figured it was nothing and she moved on.
Merrik filled the cup and handed it to his mother. She removed her oxygen mask to yell at him thinking that he had ruined her chance to get a drink. Those were the last words that he had ever heard from her. She was placed on life support machines and kept in a coma.
About a month later, Merrik learned of her passing. He had managed to convince his father that he no longer wanted to visit the hospital. He reluctantly agreed, figuring it must be boring for a young cub to just be sitting there while his mother was in a coma and unaware of his presents.
His father came home one night and his aunt and uncle were with him. This was highly unusual. He was in his underwear because he was supposed to be in bed but his grandparents had let him stay up for some reason. He was to learn why when his father came home.
He learned that his mother’s organs had been failing and it reached a point that the machines could no longer keep her alive. Left with no other options she was taken off of them and allowed to wake up so they could say their goodbyes.
His father said that his mothers last words to him were her asking him where Merrik was. She then closed her eyes and passed away. Merrik cried himself to sleep that night but not because she had died but because it was her last words to him that cut him like a knife. The bitch would never be able to take them back. He would never get the chance to prove her wrong.
Life was boring after that. He cried again at the funeral but all he was feeling was that he needed to in order to keep everyone happy. He thought they might send him to a shrink if he didn’t. He became silent and quiet and most pitied him thinking it was grief over the loss of his mother. He was sad in a way but not in the way everyone thought.
He was not sad she had died, but more relieved. He did not care if he never saw her again because the thought of her sickened him. He only regretted he could never hurt her the same way that she had hurt him that night.
His father fell apart and the once strong wolf he saw his father as was now a pale imitation. He ran around trying to find a new mate and Merrik swore that he would never be that weak! He lost all interest in finding a mate and became oblivious to advances by females towards him. He just saw them as friends but romance was never a thought on his mind.
He was walking home one day after being fired from another job. He usually lost interest in jobs and never found one that would push him to want to improve for a higher position. A Doberman turned a corner and held out his paw blocking him.
“Excuse me.” Merrik said as he tried to hide his annoyance. He was in no mood to start a fight as he thought about any job openings.
“Merrik Lupus-W I presume.” The Doberman said and hearing his name caught his attention. He skeptically looked at him wondering what he wanted.
“Yeah,” He said. The Doberman smiled at him and held out a business card. This made Merrik very skeptical. Usually the type that held out cards like this were into sales jobs. He really was not good at those kinds of jobs. He took the card and read it.
Agent Doberman
White Fur Division
Central Intelligence Zoological Association (C.I.Z.A.)
“C.I.Z.A? Never heard of You.” Merrik replied as he handed the card back.
“We run under the radar for certain reasons. My department handles rare white fur species. As I’m sure you are aware they are a major threat to the safety of the populous. My department handles them to ensure they don’t disrupt the peace.” The Doberman explained.
“So why are you bothering me?”
“We’ve been watching you and feel you are an ideal candidate for our organization.” The Doberman answered. Merrik was torn between fear and curiosity because why was he being watched by this organization that tracks rare white fur species when he was not one of them?
The Doberman brought him to one of their secret bases but until they were actually inside he was forced to wear a blindfold. He thought he smelled food cooking before he was led into an elevator.
He wondered why they were standing still then the elevator lurched and the motion made him briefly wobbly as he stood. It was then that he realized that they were in an elevator.
“I think we’re safe now.” The Doberman said as he pulled the blindfold off. The inside of the elevator was like being in a shiny silver box. The metal panels reflected the light and he could vaguely see reflections of himself and the Doberman. There was another fur standing behind him and he guessed it was a guard though he did not regard Merrik in any way.
“What happens now?” Merrik asked.
“A briefing. I want you to know what we are dealing with and why it’s so important that you help us.” The Doberman explained. Merrik scratched his chin then nodded. The elevator landed and the whole thing shook again. Merrik felt tossed around like a bag of leaves but the others seemed to pay little mind to it. He guessed they were used to it by now.
The doors slid open and an attractive female skunk was waiting as he held folders pressed against her chest. Merrik smelled her perfume and found it intoxicating.
“Good morning sir,” She said and quickly launched into items that needed his attention. He briefly glanced at him but seemed uninterested as The Doberman introduced him to her.
“Charmed,” was her reply then she turned her attention back to The Doberman. He waved her off as Merrik was led into a conference room.
“This is a file on a former agent for our department. His codename is Bear.” The Doberman said as he pushed a folder towards Merrik. Merrik carefully opened it and there was a mugshot of a large white polar bear. He casually read it, not really interested in the polar bear. He was more curious why there was a file on him.
“He was our best agent. Because of his white fur he was able to get close to targets and eliminate them swiftly without any fuss. Not sure why but the job was getting to him. He snapped.” The Doberman explained then he snapped a pencil in half using his thumb as he held it in his paw.
“If that wasn’t bad enough he started to collect rare white fur species to build an army. This army is so he can use them to overthrow the government.”
“To what? Fulfill prophecy?” Merrik asked as his thoughts went back to the cub’s book that prophesied that one day rare white fur species would try and destroy the world by starting another Great War.
“Possibly. We have more immediate problems before we can take down The White Citadel. That’s what he calls his army. We received a report that a wealthy lion had his wife give birth to a white lion. He sold it as a slave but then after getting paid sent us a message telling us where the slavers with the white lion were.
Seems he wanted to both get paid then have us kill the cub so he could be rid of it. Bloody father of the year. Before we could, it seems a very rich deer and wolf bought the cub and a white tiger that befriended the white lion.
We’re not sure what they are planning but we can’t let rare white fur abominations go running around free. Fate has a sense of humor because when I was in college trying to get my degree. The wolf that married the deer was trying to join our fraternity.
The hazing we gave him was to shave off all his fur. He was so cute like a little white fox as we were to later learn.” The Doberman explained.
“Wait a minute, you don’t mean THE White Fox do you?” Merrik asked as his heart was beating rapidly. When he was younger the tales of a superhero white fox were spread by the news. He seemed to be helping the police capture the bad furs that broke the law. He had mysteriously vanished and no one knew why. Some thought he had died during a foiled robbery attempt.
“The very same! Had it been known who he was then our department would have neutralized him like any other rare white fur species. Since I knew he was not real themonce I told C.I.Z.A. They let him go and he was declared dead.
We need a way to lure him away so we can use him to draw out the white cubs. This is where you come in Merrik. You are the same species as the wolf that we shaved. We want to shave you and make you into a fake White Fox. We hope to lure the real one out so we can send in a team to capture the cubs.” The Doberman said.
“It will take time to get myself ready.” Merrik protested.
“That’s OK I have plans to send in a mole to keep an eye on them. He will pretend to be their school teacher and keep tabs on what they and the family are doing. This will give you time to pose as The White Fox. We have you commit a few robberies and we believe this will draw out the real White Fox. Once in our paws the deer will have no choice but to surrender the cubs to us.
If you do well on this mission you’ll be assigned to help us capture Bear, the leader of the White Citadel. Are you in?” The Doberman asked as he extended his paw.
“You bet I’m in!” Merrik said and they shook. This was the moment that Merrik’s life would change forever… He would never again let anyone call him worthless and stupid…
