The Watchers Lurking In The Stalactites
Originally wrote this for the final day of Weretober last year which is both Halloween and we’rebat themed. As such here’s this poem about the werebats which lurk and stalk from the stalactites. Originally I posted this a week late but this time around it’s about two and a half weeks early. Originally posted in November 2023.
The Watchers Lurking In The Stalactites
By: A.X. Bueno
Over here is their self made home
They come from all over to join this colony
Nestling into whatever place they can find among the ceiling of stone
They are bats who might have once been men
Or perhaps even other more bizarre things
To them it’s matters very little
What they were back then
Caring more about adding new colony members and flying on their mighty wings
At night that is when they go on the prowl
For in the day they sleep and unlike wolves
Were or otherwise they don’t warn or signal with something like a howl
They don’t hunt humans though
Preferring other foods so from that concern you’re free
But be aware that they’re very protective of their territory
If you’re aware you’ll recognize them by their squeaks and oddly shaped noses
If you miss those signs however you’re at the mercy at whatever they and fate proposes
Still I wouldn’t worry too much
They prefer to remain creatures of mystery that just want to be left alone
That said there’s plenty about these werebats that’s still unpredictable and unknown
They’ll know plenty about you though if your paths become crossed
So be wary around them for it’s easy for them to consider you lost
And when that happens your fate and the colony’s will certainly become intercrossed
