All Us Workers Hold It Together
A poem I wrote for International Women’s Day last year. It’s about the worker ants of an ant colony. Originally posted in March 2023.
*All Us Workers Hold It Together *

Scurrying legs abound
Moving quickly with our tasks both above and underground
Expanding the colony and doing all the work we can
Mostly down below but sometimes we’ll go above into the world of man
Whatever benefits the colony will be done
Everything from gathering food to caring for the young
Of course there are some things we can’t do such as fly
That’s better left for the males who have wings
And the queen who does as well and who must be protected above all things
She keeps the colony alive by giving birth to new ants
Which we then take care of so they can grow to help with and appreciate all the colony grants
It’s a tireless job but that’s just things are run
We work to sustain ourselves and make sure all our vital tasks are done
The queen will continue to provide young to become more workers and drones
And those drones will go off to seek other colonies to help other queens with their thrones
Which is fine cause we’ve all got our purposes and zones
We workers will continue to work tirelessly and in our own duties prevail
We work relentlessly in sync to ensure the colony is functioning and doesn’t fail
