This week's prompt: "There is no war in Ba Sing Se: write an article for a periodical that at face value relates a certain event or advances a certain position, but can also be understood to relay the opposite of what it textually says. Include an anthropomorphic setting or characters."

Really challenging one this week. I'm not sure how well this really turned out, but I at the very least think I captured what the prompt was looking for. But that's why we do these - experiment and see how it goes!

FOR IMMEDIATE DISSEMINATION:

We regret to report that at approximately 4 a.m. this morning, Hayth Tower collapsed. Other buildings in the area may have also been affected, although at this time we do not have a full accounting of the damage. We have deployed two hundred soldiers and rescue workers to the site, who are currently clearing debris and recovering any survivors. The number of casualties is currently unknown. Nearby residents are advised to stay away from the area until further notice.

Seismic data indicate that a low-magnitude earthquake preceded the collapse of Hayth Tower by approximately five minutes. Although recent inspections revealed no issues with the building's structural integrity, initial analysis suggests that the tremors may have been of sufficient strength to cause a catastrophic fault in its foundation given its age. We stress that, while aftershocks may occur, they are not expected to be powerful enough to cause further damage.

Originally constructed in 2068, Hayth Tower was one of the oldest buildings in Cohordale and was a place of deep historical significance. While it has been a government administration building for nearly thirty years, it was originally built as an army barracks for Porcean soldiers and served as the seat of the Grand Council for over a century before the capitol was moved to New Villam. Most famously, it was the site where the Treaty of Suidacto was ratified, marking the formal end of the Porceo-Lupo War. As a long-standing symbol of strength, peace, and unity for all Cohordaleans, we express deep sadness over its loss. We hereby designate the site for cultural preservation, as a monument both to those who tragically perished this morning and to the continued endurance of our great nation.

Prior acts of vandalism to Hayth Tower in recent weeks have led to speculation on social media that this may have been an intentional act. These rumors are incendiary, have no basis in fact, and we condemn those who would spread such misinformation in the strongest possible terms. Note that statements made with the intent to undermine national security are subject to Code 13.40-7A and perpetrators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

We will continue to investigate the circumstances of this event and provide updates as new information comes to light. Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of the victims.

Yours in the Cloven Hoof,

Regent Ellis Worcester, III
